Perfect for small groups of friends or a couple’s getaway, 3-bedroomed Villa Mayana nestles quietly in relaxed, rural Canggu. With a car and driver included, Bali’s beaches, mountains, restaurants, shops and bars are yours to discover, while this stylish yet homely villa with pool and rice-field views awaits your return.
A comfortable home-away-from-home with rice-field views
Arriving at Villa Mayana with a small group of friends, we immediately felt both at home and spoilt in all the right ways. The design and layout is perfect for plenty of social hang-out time, while the open views of gardens, pool, rice fields and sky give a grand impression.
It was a treat to soak in the luxurious tubs in the downstairs ensuites, and while the upstairs bedroom lacks a tub, it does have its own furnished landing area overlooking the lounge, and is good spot for some private reading or surfing the net from your laptop (WiFi connection is not the strongest, so don’t expect to be doing much downloading). This upstairs bedroom would not be suitable for younger kids though, as neither the steps nor the landing area is safely railed.
Feeling so peacefully secluded and surrounded by nature, yet with such easy access to all that Bali has to offer thanks to a complimentary car and driver (guests do pay for petrol), we felt that Villa Mayana offers a well-rounded home away from home.

Highlights
When it came to getting out and about, having a car and driver on standby was a huge benefit and really topped off the holiday experience. We were able to go on day trips all over the island, while ducking out for a night on the town or a swim at the beach was easy too. The views of gardens, rice fields and the open sky from the villa are definitely a winning factor, especially when it comes to moonlit dips under the stars.
Surprises
As Villa Mayana has only recently opened its doors to guests (March 2011), some aspects are still being perfected and there were a few surprises. Access to the butler’s room is through the main lounge and dining area and it was a little disconcerting when he made unexpected appearances. If you would prefer more privacy, you can ask for the butler to sleep off-site. The television in the lounge is very high up, which makes viewing a little awkward (but does avoid blocking the lovely views). As meals (apart from breakfast) are not provided, we’d also suggest that you request to have some food and drinks pre-stocked for your arrival (or hire a chef!). The manager, Made is very helpful and will do whatever it takes to make sure you are happy and at home.
PROs
Comfortable, homely atmosphere
Car and driver included
Pre-paid mobile phone provided
Nice views across gardens and rice fields
CONs
WiFi signal not the strongest
Staff could be a little more discreet
TV in lounge positioned too high up
No safety rail to stairs or landing area
The Experience
Mayana was originally designed as a private residence, and stepping through this villa’s front door invokes a sigh of satisfaction and a pleasant feeling of being ‘at home’ while still spoiling guests with its exotic design, views and charm. A comfortable open-plan lounge and dining area looks out over a healthy green lawn, just made for relaxing under the sun or stars, while an inviting 11m pool borders the neighbouring rice fields, where tropical greenery, scarecrows and colourful farm ‘ornaments’ act as windows into local Balinese life.
A great set up for a small group of close friends, Villa Mayana’s open-plan communal areas mean lounging, cooking, sharing a meal or watching movies all become very social occasions. The three bedrooms are comfortable escapes for couples looking for intimate time alone, or for those simply wanting to crash out in air conditioned comfort on a king-size bed to watch a DVD.
Combining a Mediterranean edge with some classic Asian indoor-outdoor architecture brings both a cosy ambiance and neatness to Mayana. Polished marble floors and lime-washed teak furnishings create a crisp sense of stylish comfort, while select antique carvings from Bali and Java add an artistic touch.
When it comes to exploring Bali, having a car and driver included in the rate is a winning point. Day trips to exotic locations across the island can be made with ease, as can quick scoots to the nearby restaurants, bars, shops and beaches.
Built in 2009, Mayana has only recently opened its doors to guests and is still finding its feet in some respects, but the manager, Made, is super-friendly and happy to help organise anything that you may desire – even providing a pre-paid mobile phone for guests to use during their stay. A housekeeper attends daily and, as an optional extra, chefs are available to prepare meals other than breakfast, which is already included. Very quickly you will feel perfectly at home at Villa Mayana.
Hidden in a pocket of tranquility, Villa Mayana offers an intimate escape within the natural landscape Bali is renowned for – open rice fields, quiet roads and beautiful beaches. Don’t be surprised to see local farmers chasing birds away from their rice paddies while you lean against the pool’s edge with drink in hand … As the last villa in a complex of five, this holiday cocoon feels miles away from the strains of routine life, although the complimentary car and driver make an outing to cosmopolitan Seminyak easy too.
About Canggu Canggu is actually a small fishing village, but has become the collective name for a number of villages (including Berawa, Tegal Gundul, Tiyingtukul, Pererenan, Nelayan, Babakan ) which, despite lying within a developing area, can still be described as a sleepy coastal locale. Here, amongst the rice fields which extend all the way down to the beach, you will find some of the most luxurious private residences on Bali. It is also an area that most surfers will know about, with reef swells that are larger than those you will find in Kuta further south. Swimming isn't advisable however as the rips can be dangerous. Nearby sporting facilities include the Canggu Club (of which many holiday villas in the area include guest membership), offering social and leisure amenities, including a state-of-the art gym, a 25m swimming pool and a tennis and squash centre. Along the coast to the north of Canggu is the Nirwana Bali Golf Club which was designed by Greg Norman and is frequently voted the number one golf course in Asia. Next to this is Pura Tanah Lot; a sea temple perched high on a craggy wave-lashed rock and probably the most photographed sight in Bali. Sophisticated Seminyak, a few kilometres south of Canggu, lays claim to the highest concentration of independent fine-dining restaurants on the island, including Sarong, La Lucciola and Ku Dé Ta, together with a wide choice of chic cocktail bars, exciting nightclubs, lavish spas and elegant boutiques.
About Bali Bali is Indonesia's most popular tourist location and is considered one of Asia's premier tropical island destinations. Steeped in history and renowned for its artistic way of life, Bali is a peaceful contrast to some of the more frantic destinations Asia has to offer. The inner peace and creative talents of the Balinese has attracted artists the world over fascinated by local dancers, silversmiths, wood carvers, potters and painters that seem to pervade throughout the island. The abundant verdant fields and surrounding sea have long supplied Bali with an easy surplus of food leaving time for life's more artistic past times. As a result everything in Bali has a creative and religious element centred around the local Banjar (residents association) – little, adorned temples are everywhere, doors are covered in intricate carvings, huge kites ward off evil spirits and colourful roadside ceremonies bring traffic to a standstill. Bali is a popular destination principally from Australia and Asia but also from all over Europe. The island welcomes thousands of visitors each year to a relaxing lifestyle, stunning beaches, world class surf, vibrant villages, and spectacular scenery all with an exquisite tropical climate. Located approximately two hours' flying time from Singapore the island is serviced by an international airport at Denpasar with direct flights to and from many major cities in Asia, Europe and Australia and many more via Jakarta, Indonesia's capital. The island offers an impressive range of leisure and lifestyle amenities including world-class golf courses, wonderful seascapes for surfing, diving and snorkelling as well as luxurious spas, chic boutiques, tropical forests, towering volcanoes and international cuisine.
High, woven rattan ceilings, open space and pale tones welcome plenty of natural light into every corner of Villa Mayana. With an open-sided lounge, dining and kitchen area spilling out onto a fresh green lawn, the rice fields are always in view. In the lounge a surround-sound DVD/CD system with a 48-inch flat-screen satellite-channel TV is positioned at almost roof height above the arched facade. Soft silk cushions in dark maroon add a textural imprint and contrast.
Teak furnishings are lime-washed to give a European twist to the Balinese architecture, with a six-seater dining table placed for easy serving in front of a studio-style kitchen. The kitchen is well-equipped for whipping up home-cooked meals and a large twin-door fridge/freezer allows for stocking up on supplies.
The staircase is a definite ‘out of bounds’ area for young children (there’s a banister but no uprights); as is the landing area outside the upstairs bedroom which is also without a balustrade. The three air conditioned bedrooms are spacious, neat and minimal, while handmade lampshades, bed throws and carvings add personality. All are furnished with king-size beds and feature 32-inch, flat–screen TV’s with DVD players (no satellite in the bedrooms) and grand ensuite bathrooms with lots of glass and large mirrors to open up the space. Marble surfaces and walls with stone-carved inlays convey a Cleopatra-style bathing experience, especially in the two downstairs bathrooms which both benefit from huge free-standing marble bathtubs. The master bedroom, downstairs, wins the prize for best view; 200-degree floor-to-ceiling windows gazing out across the pool and into the green landscape beyond.
A butler’s room is situated behind the kitchen and dining area.
