The Experience
A narrow dirt road leads through the rice fields, providing a very real sensation of getting away from it all. Golfers will be thrilled by a glimpse of the rolling greens of the Nirwana Bali Golf Club, which neighbours the villa. At cliff’s edge the verdant fields give way to coastal scrub and the gloriously isolated Villa Tantangan that occupies its own headland fifteen meters above the black sands of Nyani beach.
An infinity pool takes pride of place in the centre of the lawn, flanked by funky black deck chairs. A collection of low, flat roofed pavilions are spread across the gentle slopes, connected by a series of bamboo-covered walkways and wooden paths. Natural landscaping favours hardy coastal plants and trees such as cactus, bamboo, pandanus and ornamental palms, while courtyards reveal magnificent travellers palms with fan-like fronds.
The villa provides a modern take on coastal living, a luxurious setting for magnificent sunrises and sunsets, with direct access to an often deserted beach. The surrounding hills, river banks, rice fields and cliffs are ideal for walking, while private sleeping quarters make it a good choice for small groups. A sharp drop off from the edge of the property makes it unsuitable for young children.
The villa has been designed to minimise energy consumption, with solar panels providing much of the power. Natural building materials include timber, bamboo and stone, while the flat roofs of the single-storey pavilions are planted with shrubs which provide effective insulation, and integration with the surroundings. There is also a back-up generator (located in a soundproof room at the back of the property.)
Staff are friendly and accommodating, and although everything is taken care of, this feels more like a luxury beach house rather than a fully serviced villa. A substantial continental breakfast is included and the chef is also available to prepare lunch and dinner on request, with provisions on guest account. For those who can bear to drag themselves away from the raw and natural beauty, a complimentary driver is available eight hours a day.

Luxurious, eco friendly beach escape fantasy.
We really liked the eco design features which were attractive as well as being smart! The gardens on top of the flat roofs helped the buildings blend with their surroundings, and you can forget any notion of ‘eco friendly’ equalling rustic; it was more a case of an undercurrent of luxury enhancing an outdoor experience. We enjoyed panoramic sea views from the bed and from our sunken bath tub, and we loved the aptly named infinity pool which truly had infinite views stretching across the ocean to the horizon The well-equipped kitchen also deserves a mention, because, as an avid cook, it was another dream come true: in fact it was so appealing that we sent the chef home so we could enjoy the experience of ocean-view cooking – it was an absolute pleasure.
Note: The approach road can be a little bumpy in places, but passes through beautiful rural scenery which, to our minds, just added to the enchantment. Guests wishing to make use of the complimentary car and driver during their stay can also walk a few minutes down the beach and get picked up on the main road to Nyanyi, should they prefer. . </p>

Highlights
The sound of waves crashing on the beach, the breeze rippling through the palm trees, the salty sea air, the stunning views, Villa Tantangan provided everything we could have wished for in a beach escape, as if that wasn’t enough, it was also eco friendly.
Surprises
Glass doors made nice design features but were heavy to open and had sharp edges that were potentially hazardous to toes. The internet was quite slow at times, however, we were happy to switch off and lose ourselves in the beautiful views.
PROs
- Stunning ocean views
- Eco friendly
- Peaceful
- Beautiful coastal walks
- Splendid isolation
CONs
- Dangerously clean glass doors

Location
The villa has a remote location bordered by rice fields, the Tantangan river and the Indian ocean. The surrounding countryside is pleasant for walking or cycling and gives visitors a glimpse into rural Bali. A coastal walk along the cliffs provides a shortcut to the renowned Nirwana Bali Golf Club, and the restaurants and facilities of the Pan Pacific Nirwana Bali Resort (4.5 km by road), but there are no other shops, cafes or restaurants nearby. Guests can also walk 200m along Nyani beach to a car park area where a small wooden stall sells noodles and coffee. The beautiful sea temple, Pura Gede Luhur Batungaus is just a couple of hundred metres further on. The larger and more famous sea temple at Tanah Lot (5km) is dedicated to the gods of the ocean and rises dramatically from a small rocky island. Sunsets are a popular time to visit the temple, but can be crowded, so take advantage of Tantangan’s proximity and visit early in the morning when you might find you have the site to yourself.

About Seseh-Tanah Lot
A few kilometres north-west of Canggu, a towering banyan, sacred in many cultures, heralds the turning towards Seseh, a traditional beachside village approached via an avenue of coconut palms.
Seseh and its tiny neighbouring villages of Sogsogan and Cemagi still retain the customs and culture of old Bali. Here, you will see farmers in conical hats riding rusty old upright bicycles, as well as frequent, colourful processions leading to Seseh’s large beachside temple. You might just see a barong (a high-spirited, benevolent beast representing the power of good; danced by two men inside an ornate costume) dancing on the street. The good news, for folks who want to immerse themselves in the customs and culture of old Bali, is that the villagers encourage and welcome congenial visitors.
Although you can now find a few private rental villas in these three villages, they have seamlessly integrated without detracting from the simplicity and charm of the location. This is an ideal destination for those who want to get lost in the beauty of the countryside, and for those who want to engage with the local people and gain privileged insights into the Balinese Hindu lifestyle.
A little further up the coast is Tanah Lot, famous for its dramatic and venerated sea temple, which is perched on a craggy wave-lashed rock at the edge of the glistening black shoreline. It is probably the most photographed sight in Bali, especially in the late afternoon when its splendid profile is silhouetted against the setting sun. One of the top things to do in the Seseh-Tanah Lot area is to tee off at the 18-hole, 72-par, championship-standard Nirwana Bali Golf Club, frequently voted as the number one golf course in Asia. This, however, still remains a remote area with few facilities other than the souvenir stalls and simple eateries within the temple grounds, and three international restaurants within Pan Pacific Nirwana Bali Resort.
About Bali
Bali is Indonesia’s most popular tourist location and is considered one of Asia's premier tropical island destinations. Steeped in history and renowned for its artistic way of life, Bali is a peaceful contrast to some of the more frantic destinations Asia has to offer.
The inner peace and creative talents of the Balinese has attracted artists the world over fascinated by local dancers, silversmiths, wood carvers, potters and painters that seem to pervade throughout the island. The abundant verdant fields and surrounding sea have long supplied Bali with an easy surplus of food leaving time for life’s more artistic past times. As a result everything in Bali has a creative and religious element centred around the local Banjar (residents association) – little, adorned temples are everywhere, doors are covered in intricate carvings, huge kites ward off evil spirits and colourful roadside ceremonies bring traffic to a standstill.
Bali is a popular destination principally from Australia and Asia but also from all over Europe. The island welcomes thousands of visitors each year to a relaxing lifestyle, stunning beaches, world class surf, vibrant villages, and spectacular scenery all with an exquisite tropical climate. Located approximately two hours’ flying time from Singapore the island is serviced by an international airport at Denpasar with direct flights to and from many major cities in Asia, Europe and Australia and many more via Jakarta, Indonesia’s capital.
The island offers an impressive range of leisure and lifestyle amenities including world-class golf courses, wonderful seascapes for surfing, diving and snorkelling as well as luxurious spas, chic boutiques, tropical forests, towering volcanoes and international cuisine.
Rooms
Open on all sides to provide natural airflow and expansive views, the living room is filled with a casual assortment of beanbags, cushions and bird cage lanterns dangling over an aqua-hued lounge suite. The wooden dining table seats six and is adjacent to a glassed off TV room fitted with Satellite TV, a Bose powered iPod docking station, WiFi, a selection of magazines and DVDs, and creamy sofas topped with embroidered cushions. The bright and modern well-equipped kitchen has wooden shelves, extensive windows and a magnificent granite work bench that doubles as a breakfast counter.
The natural attributes of the villa are enhanced with heavy earthenware vases, lamps, and wood slab tables scattered throughout all the rooms. Each air-conditioned bedroom occupies its own pavilion surrounded by timber decking. White décor creates a sense of freshness and features include walk-in wardrobes, mosquito nets and generous modern bathrooms with indoor rain showers and black terrazzo finishing contrasting with colourful bathroom tiles. The Beach View bedroom overlooks the garden and beach, with a king-size bed set on a raised platform, and a sofa and writing desk occupying one corner. A mural of yellow trees adorns sliding doors that reveal a huge bathroom with hand painted floral tiles, raised bath, outdoor shower deck and lavish dressing area furnished with sofas.
The Temple View room has a secluded setting with a private deck overlooking the river, temple and hills. Twin beds convert to a king, and furniture includes a cane rocking chair and writing desk. A large bathroom offers a wall of river pebbles, raised bathtub and hilly outlook. The queen-bedded Sea View room is on the highest part of the property with breathtaking views over the ocean, pool and garden. Adornments include a large oval rice-paper lamp, coffee table and chairs. The views can also be enjoyed from the bathroom which has wooden fittings, his and hers square sinks, and attractive blue/black tiles.
The office overlooks a courtyard, with timber shelving holding a computer and photo copier, as well as cook books, and novels – including a collection of Penguin classics. Decorative masks and tribal artefacts decorate the walls, and the floor is covered in zebra print rugs. With an adjoining bathroom and two comfortable day beds, it could also be converted into a nanny or kids room.
