Villas in Indonesia

Indonesia’s dizzying array of cultures, cuisines, landscapes and seascapes is quite possibly unmatched by anywhere else in the world. The myriad islands – more than 17,000 in fact – that make up this heady, steamy, vibrant archipelago speckle across the equator for nearly 5,000km. A third of these ocean-ringed islands are completely uninhabited, which must surely be a trailblazers dream.

Travellers have been drawn to this mystical region for centuries. More than a thousand years ago traders from as far away as China were sailing to the aromatic Spice Islands of Indonesia, and this precious commodity drew the Europeans in the sixteenth century too. Fast forward a few centuries and this corner of the globe is still a hotspot for foreigners who visit today for its raw beauty and rich culture rather than the spices that pepper its delicious cuisine.

Two of the loveliest islands within Indonesia’s stunning archipelago are Bali and Lombok, each of which comes with its own special charms. Whilst Bali’s cosmopolitan vibe is far removed from Lombok’s quiet, barely developed tourist trade, each island boasts dreamy beaches, volcanic landscapes, fabulous diving, charming culture and gentle, welcoming people.

Straddling the equator, Indonesia has two main seasons – wet between October and April and dry for the rest of the year – with slight geographical variations. The wet season is by no means intolerable, as storms tend to come in sudden bursts in between long spells of sunshine. The Christmas holiday period traditionally attracts a horde of visitors. And, given what awaits them on these unique and exotic islands, this is surely of no surprise.

Villa Kayajiwa

Villa Kayajiwa

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

I knew we’d be in for a treat the moment we arrived at the entrance of Villa Kayajiwa. The contemporary dark façade suggested something pretty unique and stylish would be hiding behind those walls.

As a great fan of modern architecture and clever design, I could tell this villa was designed as a place to relax, entertain and impress. As far as we were concerned, it more than delivered on all three accounts.

From the antique Balinese doors in the living room with door handles in the shape of a hand (door hand-le, get it?) to the original art work in every room, the owner has clearly put a lot of thought into choosing ornaments that each tell their own story.

The villa is shaped around a large lawn and a beautiful 25-metre pool which flows into a spacious Jacuzzi, all providing the perfect backdrop for endless sunbathing, evening cocktails and morning laps.
The moat around the garden was one of my favourite design features. The gentle sound of running water created a sense of being in an oasis, far away from the stresses of daily life.

We loved the big furnished roof terrace too. Not only is it a perfect sun trap during the day, but it also doubled up as a great spot for catching the sunset, as well as for some late-night handholding and stargazing.

In fairness, the karaoke room was a little wasted on us. After about ten minutes of torture, my partner and I realised the singing was putting our relationship in jeopardy. Having said that, if karaoke is your thing or indeed if you’re a masochist, then this purpose-built room will give you an extra reason for choosing this villa.

Not that you’ll need any more reasons. From the impressive modern design, the super helpful staff, the excellent location, this villa has incredible character and gets top marks from us.

Villa Kedidi

Villa Kedidi

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

Villa Kedidi is a little Balinese gem, a classic Bali residence in an area where contemporary villas are popping up quicker than we can visit them. Without being absolute beachfront, Kedidi’s location is as good as it gets in Canggu (due to inflated land prices there are very few beachfront villas in this area). The small, private garden is an oasis in which you can spend your days on the sun loungers and your nights under the floodlit palm and frangipani trees. This, coupled with the candles around the garden lit by the staff each evening, makes for a very romantic backdrop whilst dining or lounging in the main building. Kedidi is more compact than Villa Kakatua, it’s four-bedroomed sister next door, but hiring both villas (they share staff and a management office) would give you enough room to comfortably sleep 14 people (probably a few more if you are holidaying with young children). We found the staff very attentive and professional, and it’s very convenient having a car and driver available with reasonable extra rate as driving in Bali takes some getting used to!

We love staying in Canggu. It’s rapidly becoming one of the most popular areas in Bali, yet it retains a rural charm and there are still a few fields and rice paddies to be found in between the villas. That’s not to say it will be everyone’s preference as there is no shopping or nightlife here (nor any air conditioning in the open-air living areas) – you must travel into Seminyak for this. However Canggu does offer some quaint and varied dining spots along with a rugged surf beach. Taking into account its wonderful location and authentic Balinese ambiance, we think Villa Kedidi offers very good value for money.

Lakshmi Villas - Kawi

Lakshmi Villas - Kawi

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

Most villas of this size in Seminyak are self catering, so a personal butler on call 24/7, plus a menu of delicious food (prepared by a chef in the main service kitchen), is a treat indeed. Villa Kawi is very private, and immaculately clean, even though it was built in 2006 it still looks spanking new. The furnishings are all high quality with rattan sofas and gorgeous fabrics and artwork. If you’re into shopping, going to the beach, fine dining and nightlife, this is one of the best locations in Bali; it’s all within walking distance. Another thing we liked about Villa Kawi is that it’s at the end of a cul-de-sac so there’s no sound of passing traffic, and it’s very safe and secure.

Lakshmi Villas - Solo

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

On our recent return visit to Villa Solo, with another three years of villa reviewing experience under our belts, we decided we should have scored it a little bit higher, so we’ve adjusted the numbers to reflect this. The nothing-is-too-much trouble butlers here have all been trained by Magnums – one of the top butler training schools in the world – and it shows. We were really impressed! Most villas of this size in Seminyak are self catering, so a personal butler on call 24/7, plus a menu of delicious food (prepared by a chef in the main service kitchen), is a treat indeed. Nothing has changed at the villa itself, it is still very private, and it still looks new because it has been immaculately maintained, along with the plants that line its walls. Villa Solo is ideal for a single person, a couple, or even a family of three, looking for something bigger and better than a hotel room. An extra bed can be provided for a child. It is also very good value for money. Don’t expect anything grand: Villa Solo is simple, stylish, modern, practical, immaculate and private.

Lakshmi Villas - Ubud

Lakshmi Villas - Ubud

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

After a ridiculously early-morning four-hour flight from Thailand we were a bit exhausted when we arrived at Villa Ubud, so how nice was it to find our accommodation so cool, shady and private. Our butler informed us that he was there to cater to our every whim, and just to call him if we needed anything, so after preparing an ice bucket and a couple of champagne flutes (for the duty frees!) he discreetly slipped away leaving us to our own devices. At dinner time he was the perfect professional, adding a noble tinge to our humble but elegantly prepared and presented Balinese feast, but somehow he still kept that casual Bali air, and we loved him for that – the stuff that gratuities were made for. We commented on how perfect the location was for our needs as we ambled down to the beach at sunset for a couple of cold beers.

The Layar - Villa 2A (1BR)

The Layar - Villa 2A (1BR)

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

We’d done our research and thought we had realistic notions about where we were going, but The Layar surpassed all our expectations.  The villas’ design works on so many levels: it’s intriguingly different and totally tropical, but what we hadn’t anticipated was just how ‘at home’ we would feel as soon as we crossed the stepping stones into the gorgeous garden and saw the sweep of roof, from under which the living and dining areas beckoned.

The villas are well equipped with satellite channel TVs, sound systems and a good range of kitchen utensils (in the unlikely event that you might chose to self-cater), while bedrooms and bathrooms – all of which are generously sized – are fitted with quality furnishings and adorned with interesting Indonesian art and artefacts.

And there’s plenty to keep all ages and interests entertained.  The gardens, furnished decks and pools, coupled with TV areas, lounge and dining spaces will be enough for some, but lazy days can be punctuated with in-villa spa treatments carried out by The Layar’s professional therapists and delicious barbecue dinners cooked in the gardens of your own private oasis.  When we did finally tear ourselves away from our new ‘home’ we enjoyed venturing out to explore the shops, restaurants and cafes of Seminyak, all of which were easy to reach on foot.  Cocktails on the beach at La Lucciola, followed by an excellent dinner at ‘The Junction’ made a great end to the day.
