Villas in Indonesia

Indonesia’s dizzying array of cultures, cuisines, landscapes and seascapes is quite possibly unmatched by anywhere else in the world. The myriad islands – more than 17,000 in fact – that make up this heady, steamy, vibrant archipelago speckle across the equator for nearly 5,000km. A third of these ocean-ringed islands are completely uninhabited, which must surely be a trailblazers dream.

Travellers have been drawn to this mystical region for centuries. More than a thousand years ago traders from as far away as China were sailing to the aromatic Spice Islands of Indonesia, and this precious commodity drew the Europeans in the sixteenth century too. Fast forward a few centuries and this corner of the globe is still a hotspot for foreigners who visit today for its raw beauty and rich culture rather than the spices that pepper its delicious cuisine.

Two of the loveliest islands within Indonesia’s stunning archipelago are Bali and Lombok, each of which comes with its own special charms. Whilst Bali’s cosmopolitan vibe is far removed from Lombok’s quiet, barely developed tourist trade, each island boasts dreamy beaches, volcanic landscapes, fabulous diving, charming culture and gentle, welcoming people.

Straddling the equator, Indonesia has two main seasons – wet between October and April and dry for the rest of the year – with slight geographical variations. The wet season is by no means intolerable, as storms tend to come in sudden bursts in between long spells of sunshine. The Christmas holiday period traditionally attracts a horde of visitors. And, given what awaits them on these unique and exotic islands, this is surely of no surprise.

Kalimaya I

Kalimaya I

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

Wow! Villa Kalimaya I was a surprise from the moment we opened the gilded Balinese doors and stepped into its garden. Yes, garden!  Not a handkerchief-sized patch eaten up by a pool, as is the case in so many villas in densely built Seminyak, but a huge expanse of lawn edged with travellers palms, hibiscus and frangipani trees – big enough to lose three guest bedroom pavilions which were completely camouflaged from view!

While there are two huge living rooms and an indoor dining room within the main house, we spent most of our time idling on over-sized cushions in the large poolside pavilion, and chose to take our meals alfresco. Speaking of meals, the cook whipped up a delicious Singapore laksa for us – apparently a doddle for him as he regularly prepares gourmet dinner parties for 20; no wonder most guests forego the pleasures of the many fine restaurants within an easy walk of the villa in favour of his home cooking.

The cook, butlers and housekeepers – all charming and helpful – divide their time between all four Kalimaya villas set along the same quiet lane. We considered this a bonus as it means guests benefit from a professional team, but privacy is not compromised by their continued presence.

We appreciated that Kalimaya has been designed as a home – originally for entertaining her royal friends, the owner told us. Comfortable, well equipped and full of personal art and furniture collections, the place feels larger-than-life. This is the perfect villa for an extended family or groups of friends who want to be sociable and yet still be able to get away from each other; the bedrooms are large and designed for privacy, there are lots of different seating and dining areas, and we were still discovering discreet get-away-from-the-crowd hideaways right up to our departure.

Kalimaya II

Kalimaya II

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

When we first opened the gilded Balinese doors onto Kalimaya II’s garden, we thought we’d come to the wrong place – surely it was too big to be only a two-bedroom villa? The element of surprise was maintained throughout our visit, as we discovered not one but two living rooms as well as a separate dining room and a second dining area on the upstairs terrace – an extraordinary amount of space, especially in such a hip Seminyak hotspot.

This is a really well-designed, well-furnished villa with a lot of extra details to ensure a comfortable, cossetted stay. With the large pool, jacuzzi and infra-red sauna to frolic in (plus four TVs and DVD players), there was plenty to keep us occupied without making use of the complimentary Canggu Club membership. And when we did step beyond the villa walls, we were on the beach or in Seminyak’s best restaurants and boutiques within minutes.

This is the perfect place for a couple, two couples or a family of four who want to be sociable and yet still be able to get away from each other. The cook, butlers and housekeepers – all charming and helpful – divide their time between this and the other three Kalimaya villas along the same quiet lane. We considered this a bonus as it means guests benefit from a professional team, but privacy is not compromised by their continued presence – and it means that self-catering is a personal choice, not a prerequisite.

Kalimaya IV

When we first opened the gilded Balinese doors into Villa Kalimaya IV, we were immediately taken with the large pool that runs the length of the garden, with its huge jacuzzi, infra-red sauna, sunbathing deck and imposing raised balé. The element of surprise was maintained throughout our visit, as we discovered not one but two living rooms as well as a second dining area on the upstairs terrace – an extraordinary amount of space, especially in such a hip Seminyak hotspot.

This is the perfect place for a family or group of friends who want to be sociable and yet still be able to get away from each other. The room configuration is good for families as one of the two upstairs bedrooms has twin beds – perfect for the kids – while the downstairs bedroom will suit the grandparents (or older kids returning from a night on the town).

Villa Kalyani

Villa Kalyani

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

Relaxing comes almost too easy at Villa Kalyani and you never get bored of doing it. From swing bed to bar stool, from poolside to pool table; if one space becomes tedious you can just decamp to the next inviting chill-out zone. The home theatre is one of the best that we have seen. With movies running through a digital projector onto a 130-inch screen, the room has surround-sound and two sofa beds wide enough to lie perpendicularly horizontal.  We chose Jurassic Park to do our surroundings justice: nothing quite like a life-sized, saliva-filled set of T-Rex jaws coming at you to make you appreciate the wonders of modern technology. And there’s an even bigger screen out in the garden for special occasions!

The staff are smart and have been trained to anticipate your every need; the timing of the bite-size fried bananas and ice cream brought to us poolside at sunset was impeccable.  The main 22 x 6m pool has a shallow area for children at the top end and a gas fire bowl providing dramatic night-time reflections. Guest comfort has been carefully thought through, with lots of underwater pool seating so you can enjoy your G&T without having to tread water at the same time. The Pioneer Pro DJ equipment can be rented for parties at the villa.

On returning to Kalyani for the first time in three years, we were very happy to note that the villa has been impeccably maintained, it has even been featured in a coffee table book called ‘The New Indonesian House’.

Villa Kayajiwa

Villa Kayajiwa

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

I knew we’d be in for a treat the moment we arrived at the entrance of Villa Kayajiwa. The contemporary dark façade suggested something pretty unique and stylish would be hiding behind those walls.

As a great fan of modern architecture and clever design, I could tell this villa was designed as a place to relax, entertain and impress. As far as we were concerned, it more than delivered on all three accounts.

From the antique Balinese doors in the living room with door handles in the shape of a hand (door hand-le, get it?) to the original art work in every room, the owner has clearly put a lot of thought into choosing ornaments that each tell their own story.

The villa is shaped around a large lawn and a beautiful 25-metre pool which flows into a spacious Jacuzzi, all providing the perfect backdrop for endless sunbathing, evening cocktails and morning laps.
The moat around the garden was one of my favourite design features. The gentle sound of running water created a sense of being in an oasis, far away from the stresses of daily life.

We loved the big furnished roof terrace too. Not only is it a perfect sun trap during the day, but it also doubled up as a great spot for catching the sunset, as well as for some late-night handholding and stargazing.

In fairness, the karaoke room was a little wasted on us. After about ten minutes of torture, my partner and I realised the singing was putting our relationship in jeopardy. Having said that, if karaoke is your thing or indeed if you’re a masochist, then this purpose-built room will give you an extra reason for choosing this villa.

Not that you’ll need any more reasons. From the impressive modern design, the super helpful staff, the excellent location, this villa has incredible character and gets top marks from us.
