Villas in Indonesia

Indonesia’s dizzying array of cultures, cuisines, landscapes and seascapes is quite possibly unmatched by anywhere else in the world. The myriad islands – more than 17,000 in fact – that make up this heady, steamy, vibrant archipelago speckle across the equator for nearly 5,000km. A third of these ocean-ringed islands are completely uninhabited, which must surely be a trailblazers dream.

Travellers have been drawn to this mystical region for centuries. More than a thousand years ago traders from as far away as China were sailing to the aromatic Spice Islands of Indonesia, and this precious commodity drew the Europeans in the sixteenth century too. Fast forward a few centuries and this corner of the globe is still a hotspot for foreigners who visit today for its raw beauty and rich culture rather than the spices that pepper its delicious cuisine.

Two of the loveliest islands within Indonesia’s stunning archipelago are Bali and Lombok, each of which comes with its own special charms. Whilst Bali’s cosmopolitan vibe is far removed from Lombok’s quiet, barely developed tourist trade, each island boasts dreamy beaches, volcanic landscapes, fabulous diving, charming culture and gentle, welcoming people.

Straddling the equator, Indonesia has two main seasons – wet between October and April and dry for the rest of the year – with slight geographical variations. The wet season is by no means intolerable, as storms tend to come in sudden bursts in between long spells of sunshine. The Christmas holiday period traditionally attracts a horde of visitors. And, given what awaits them on these unique and exotic islands, this is surely of no surprise.

Villa Shinta Dewi Seminyak

Villa Shinta Dewi Seminyak

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

Villa Shinta Dewi Seminyak is such a pretty villa; it brought grins to our faces as soon as we walked in. And we were given such a warm greeting by the staff, with a frangipani garland each, a welcome drink and cool refreshing towel. The villa is built around an inner courtyard dominated by the pool, and although there’s not much garden the plants and flowering trees are gorgeous. The interiors are also lovely, with very comfortable sofas, chairs, beds and sunbeds, and sophisticated soft furnishings. It’s a tasteful, grown up villa, and this is also reflected in the service, which is very discreet. The staff have big smiles and the chef’s forte is a great homemade pizza and a hearty breakfast (breakfast is included in the villa rate; all other provisions are on guest account).

We certainly had no complaints on our return visit to Villa Shinta Dewi Seminyak. This charming villa has been beautifully maintained and refreshed with new soft furnishings, wall coverings and generous licks of paint. There are now two 47-inch flat screen TVs, one in the open-air lounge and one in the media room which converts into a fifth bedroom when required. The villa manager told us that all the guests love this room. In fact, reviewing the great choice of guest relaxation areas at Villa Shinta Dewi Seminyak, and after having spent a bit of time in the delightful sunset lounge, we decided to up the score a bit. We also increased the score for the staff, they’re a great team.

Villa Shinta Dewi Ubud

Villa Shinta Dewi Ubud

Indonesia » Bali » Ubud

Villa Shinta Dewi is a gem.  With Ubud’s high-season influx of day-trippers and consequent increase in traffic chaos, we were happy to head northwards through the rice fields a couple of kilometres out of town to discover a delightfully private villa tucked away behind a small village.  Birdsong, the mature trees rustling in the breeze and the river rushing deep in the ravine were the only sounds to vie with Shinta Dewi’s multi-zone Sonos sound system…..topped only by our appreciative ‘Oooohs’ and ‘Ahhhhs’ as we tucked into Pak Putu’s fabulously presented dinner.  We were delighted to find such an accomplished chef here; Ubud is awash with great restaurants and cafes but, with his talent, we think many guests will be reluctant to eat out (despite the complimentary shuttle service).

We appreciated the choice of living areas – too many for us to enjoy in our short 24-hour trip.  After a divinely comfortable night’s sleep (top range mattresses dressed in crisp cotton linen), it was glorious listening to the dawn chorus from the comfort of the upper level lounge before heading down to the poolside balé for breakfast.

The charming staff managed to pull off a fine balancing act by being on hand when needed, but otherwise discreetly in the background.  Villa manager Nong and supervisor Wayan are very knowledgeable about the area and can organise all sorts of trips, from cycling through the rice fields to a sunrise hike up a volcano.

Villa Simona Oasis

Villa Simona Oasis

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

Villa Simona Oasis is a delightful villa in a lovely peaceful location.  Clearly the original owner was as passionate about his villa as he was about his wife to whom the villa was a gift.  The level of detail and finish throughout the property is excellent.  Equally passionate is the villa manager, who is always keen to make sure his guests have a good stay.  He speaks excellent English which makes up for the lack of English from one or two of the other staff.

The food we were served was nicely presented in the open-sided living/dining room – a great place from which to admire the villa grounds.  The pool is a delight and the sunken garden in front is perfect for a party or barbecue.  The bedrooms are very generous and the highlight for us was the huge ensuite garden bathrooms, particularly the master room, which is outstandingly romantic.  A great villa for parties, groups, families and yoga retreats.

Sira Beach House

Sira Beach House

Indonesia » Lombok » Northwest Lombok » Tanjung

This is a great villa for families or groups of friends, with loads of space, private places to escape and plenty of entertainment for all ages. The pairing of the six bedrooms means that three families can easily escape from each other in their own separate areas. During our visit to the villa the staff surprised us by setting up a sunset table for two on the sand, within a circle of candles and flaming torches, to create a most romantic feast of local dishes. Only after the sun went down did we realise that the ‘circle’ was actually a heart shape! The chef has created a great menu and can turn his hand to anything but loves to indulge his guests with Lombok specialties. Due to the remoteness of the area, you’ll be asked to order your first meal and any special requests in advance of your arrival. The kitchen will operate on a menu or grocery system according to your preferences.

Fully self-contained, we didn’t leave the confines of the villa grounds except to swim in the ocean. The electronic beeper that we were given to summon the staff at anytime was a great idea (and necessary due to the size of the place). No one claims that this villa is 100% environmentally sustainable but great care has been taken in the design to be as eco-friendly as possible. We were very aware that, although were indulging in six-star luxury, we were having a low impact – the pool is chemical free, our long showers and baths were solar heated and the water we were using was being recycled to nurture the organic gardens.

Villa A-Mar

Villa A-Mar

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

The moment we walked into Rumah Sirocco the place reached into our throats and pulled out the word “Wow!” Black, black, a bit of green vegetation, some charcoal grey, and more black. This place is cool. We opened all the windows, making the most of the villa’s design, to enjoy the feel of the breeze coming in off the rice fields and the ocean.

The views are incredible; looking out of the windows there is an expanse of rice fields, wide open skies, and space. The dining table was bathed in sun in the late afternoon and its soft couches were very amenable to a glass of wine and idle chatter. The charming beach is literally a three-minute walk away, and as sunset approached we walked down to the water’s edge to watch the sun sink into the ocean. There is a fun swing bridge leading to the sand that kids will love. We especially enjoyed, as you should, a beautiful Balinese meal prepared by Sirocco’s resident chef, and served ably and sweetly by the waiting staff (dressed in black).
