Villas in Indonesia

Indonesia’s dizzying array of cultures, cuisines, landscapes and seascapes is quite possibly unmatched by anywhere else in the world. The myriad islands – more than 17,000 in fact – that make up this heady, steamy, vibrant archipelago speckle across the equator for nearly 5,000km. A third of these ocean-ringed islands are completely uninhabited, which must surely be a trailblazers dream.

Travellers have been drawn to this mystical region for centuries. More than a thousand years ago traders from as far away as China were sailing to the aromatic Spice Islands of Indonesia, and this precious commodity drew the Europeans in the sixteenth century too. Fast forward a few centuries and this corner of the globe is still a hotspot for foreigners who visit today for its raw beauty and rich culture rather than the spices that pepper its delicious cuisine.

Two of the loveliest islands within Indonesia’s stunning archipelago are Bali and Lombok, each of which comes with its own special charms. Whilst Bali’s cosmopolitan vibe is far removed from Lombok’s quiet, barely developed tourist trade, each island boasts dreamy beaches, volcanic landscapes, fabulous diving, charming culture and gentle, welcoming people.

Straddling the equator, Indonesia has two main seasons – wet between October and April and dry for the rest of the year – with slight geographical variations. The wet season is by no means intolerable, as storms tend to come in sudden bursts in between long spells of sunshine. The Christmas holiday period traditionally attracts a horde of visitors. And, given what awaits them on these unique and exotic islands, this is surely of no surprise.

Oazia White

Oazia White

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Umalas-Kerobokan

One night at Villa Oazia White (such a beautifully simple moniker) just wasn’t long enough to really get to know her. That said, we still managed an afternoon on the sunbeds, some down-time in the balé, a movie session on the wonderfully soft couches, a convivial dinner party, a massage at the spa, an indulgent alfresco bath, some decent swim time, a leisurely breakfast and a full night of sleep … but it would have been nice to spread it out over a few long luxurious days.

Everywhere you look there is something to enjoy: antique statues, beckoning sofas, towering trees, flowering shrubs, fluttering butterflies and softly billowing drapes catching the breeze. And there aren’t many villas in Bali that have a river actually running through it. Perfect.

The onsite spa goes beyond the normal offerings of massage and nail treatments by delving into the holistic realms of the mystical with Shamanic Reiki, Cranio-Sacral Therapy, Aqua Flow Therapy, Balinese Shamanic Healing and much more. It has gained a reputation as one of the best in Bali.

We had a most memorable stay at Oazia Spa Villas: meals were prompt and delicious, the cushions were deep and the spa was heaven. All in all, a veritable ‘oasis’ if you will.

Pandawas Villas

Pandawas Villas

Indonesia » Bali » Ubud

When we rolled up the final steep hill and through the entrance to Pandawas Villas, the stars were overhead and ambient lighting cast elongated shadows across the tropical foliage. Had we arrived in the Garden of Eden? We were led through a pavilion with an intricately painted ceiling tracing the story of the five Pandawas brothers from the Mahabharata (after which the estate is named), and into a huge living pavilion that must be bigger than many entire villas! We later read that this dramatic arrival has been designed to mirror the brothers’ journey through the mountains, leaving worldly desires behind in search of Lord Shiva. The setting is gorgeous, with a real sense of retreat from the hurly burly and immersion in nature’s bounty. There’s space in spades here, with beautiful gardens and lots of private corners for those who want to slip away from the other villa guests. Other than the fountains and constant hum of the cicadas and chattering staff, the only noise was the odd motorbike straining up the steep hill by the villa, emphasizing the delightful quiet the rest of the time. The swimming pool is enormous and there’s plenty space to stretch out, on the deck, or have a massage in the spa balé. Our favourite spot was the Buddy’s Bar balé which commands the highest point of the resort and looks out over emerald rice terraces edged with towering palms – a very special place visited by the famed herons from nearby Petulu village. We liked the double lounger in the bedroom – perfect for languishing with a good book and a lover. The large bed was comfortable but the bedding itself was disappointing. Having said that, other details were well thought out – the universal multi-point sockets fitted throughout the villa, for example, and the home entertainment system in each bedroom.

Pantai Lima - Villa Ambra

Pantai Lima - Villa Ambra

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

Our personal favourite of the five Pantai Lima beachfront properties, Villa Ambra gave us everything we could have wanted. The views are nigh on 180 degrees from any of the balcony or poolside vantage points and privacy is guaranteed. We lazed beside the pool on our first day, waited on by a great team of staff and musing on the ebb and flow of the house design, which is both modern and traditional with lots of interesting touches ranging from antiques to funky furnishings, and a healthy dose of comfortable couches, beds and sun loungers.

Our stay couldn’t have been timed better: it coincided with a full moon which meant a very low tide and practically the whole of the local village coming down to have fun on the sand or swim in the lagoon. The energy was boundless and one of us – unable to resist the pleas to join in – got caught up in a game of beach football. Afterwards, the staff served us a barbeque dinner of fresh lobster, snapper and prawns, which they prepared in situ under the stars. This was followed by a quick post-prandial cocktail and a dip in the jacuzzi. A perfect evening ... but wait, there’s more! The Pantai Lima villas are renowned for their attention-to-cinema-viewing detail and Villa Ambra has a huge home theatre with a projector and a 5 x 3m screen. We finally fell asleep to the sound of the crashing waves and the falling rain.

The next morning the sky was clear, the sea was blue and the day was perfect again for an alfresco breakfast and a lazy day by the pool. You get the picture!

Pantai Lima - Villa Mary

Pantai Lima - Villa Mary

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

Villa Mary just keeps on giving, just when we thought there were enough facilities to keep guests going for a week or two, we found more. From the home cinema to the pool to the hot jacuzzi, to the tennis courts to the gym and the wide expanses of lawns for the kids to play tag, it just kept getting better. This is a villa that adults will love and kids will go mental over: there is a beach to comb and a river estuary to explore (Parental Guidance Recommended) and lots of fields to hunt for frogs and lizards.

The subterranean home ‘cinema’ is perfectly named. It is huge! There is nothing like seeing the open plains and dramatic wide angle shots of a Clint Eastwood spaghetti western to take you back in time. With a 5m screen and a couple of leather armchairs thrown in at the back for the folks who don’t do horizontal, this is a viewing experience that will really ‘make your day’. And just when you think it can’t get any better, the staff will microwave up a mean bowl of popcorn (make sure you pre-order).

The two upstairs bathrooms have large tubs set against picture windows that allow you to take in the views. After a blissful sleep, there was no better way to start the day than with an early morning soak in the claw foot bathtub. Lying there in the warm water with the dawn light reflecting through the rice fields against a backdrop of volcanoes, we decided that this was how every day should start! Checking out of Villa Mary really hurt.

Thanks to the in-house conference centre and all the other wonderful leisure activities, we feel that this is one of the very few villas in Bali that would be the perfect Executive Retreat. Rented as a whole, the five villas that make up Pantai Lima Estate have a total of 26 bedrooms.

Pantai Lima - Villa Melissa

Pantai Lima - Villa Melissa

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

The 1.7km approach to Villa Melissa from the main road, passing nothing but rice field after rice field, dotted with farmers, cows, and scarecrows, reinforces the message that this is going to be a ‘sense of place’ experience. The beach is wild and exciting: great for exploring and extraordinarily clean thanks to the Pantai Lima staff who scour it each day to keep it this way. Being a long way out of town, (besides being in such a beautiful place), we had no desire to venture out for dinner, and why would we with a genuine French chef on hand to indulge us with his exceptional talent. We had supper at the water’s edge in the open-sided dining pavilion, and discovered that the fading light and the illumination of numerous fishing boats on the horizon was the perfect accompaniment to the perfect meal. And for afters? The living room has a video projector and a massive pull-down screen for some larger-than-life escapism. It wasn’t difficult to amuse ourselves in the daytime with two pools no less, and we loved the hammock-like sun loungers, which were unlike any we had encountered. Even if you aren’t staying in the master bedroom, find a way to beg borrow or steal your way into its bathroom and enjoy a soak in the outdoor tub. It’s covered with its own little thatched roof, is surrounded by a koi pond and is the most romantic thing this side of a Pablo Neruda poem.

Pantai Lima - Villa Sound of the Sea

Pantai Lima - Villa Sound of the Sea

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

Villa Sound of the Sea is a wonderland of spaces designed for relaxing. We lounged by the pool for a large part of the day, were massaged in a ‘floating’ pavilion and watched movies on the big screen in the media room till late. The next morning we breakfasted right on the edge of the sand watching both the surfers riding the waves and the local fishermen trying to avoid them as they brought their small outriggers up onto the beach. On the occasion of our visit, the low tide fell in the late afternoon and opened up the beach. It seemed like the whole village was down on the sand taking advantage of the lull. This is normal community activity, especially on Sundays, with boys playing football, women gossiping, and fathers and children (and us) playing in the river estuary. The beach is bordered by a wide reef, which makes it popular with surfers, but at low tide the reef is exposed and creates a very interesting foraging opportunity for kids who want to go in search of crabs and shells in the rock pools. The neighbouring Villa Mary had three families staying with a large pack of under-eights who were loving the experience. Make sure you try the hot tub as well: it is truly decadent in a hot climate, but oh-so-nice for taking the chill off the water when the sun goes down. The staff delivered fresh drinks on an almost-clockwork, 20-minute schedule, earning both our praise and a nice fat tip. Also take time for a dip in the river mouth, it is calm and cool and also gives you the opportunity to see the five Pantai Lima properties in all their stunning glory from the outside. Music is piped throughout the villa and garden. The villa owners are French, so don’t be surprised to hear a chanson or two coming out of the speakers hidden in the undergrowth. Édith Piaf pour le petit déjeuner anyone?
