Villas in Indonesia

Indonesia’s dizzying array of cultures, cuisines, landscapes and seascapes is quite possibly unmatched by anywhere else in the world. The myriad islands – more than 17,000 in fact – that make up this heady, steamy, vibrant archipelago speckle across the equator for nearly 5,000km. A third of these ocean-ringed islands are completely uninhabited, which must surely be a trailblazers dream.

Travellers have been drawn to this mystical region for centuries. More than a thousand years ago traders from as far away as China were sailing to the aromatic Spice Islands of Indonesia, and this precious commodity drew the Europeans in the sixteenth century too. Fast forward a few centuries and this corner of the globe is still a hotspot for foreigners who visit today for its raw beauty and rich culture rather than the spices that pepper its delicious cuisine.

Two of the loveliest islands within Indonesia’s stunning archipelago are Bali and Lombok, each of which comes with its own special charms. Whilst Bali’s cosmopolitan vibe is far removed from Lombok’s quiet, barely developed tourist trade, each island boasts dreamy beaches, volcanic landscapes, fabulous diving, charming culture and gentle, welcoming people.

Straddling the equator, Indonesia has two main seasons – wet between October and April and dry for the rest of the year – with slight geographical variations. The wet season is by no means intolerable, as storms tend to come in sudden bursts in between long spells of sunshine. The Christmas holiday period traditionally attracts a horde of visitors. And, given what awaits them on these unique and exotic islands, this is surely of no surprise.

Rumah Puro Blanco

Rumah Puro Blanco

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

With four bedrooms and comfy living spaces, Rumah Puro Blanco is a great party pad for a group, or base for a family who will enjoy being pampered by the attentive Balinese staff. There’s a hidden kitchen off the guest kitchen, enabling the staff to prepare for dinner parties and functions out of sight. The minimalist structure is well designed; we particularly liked the kitchen, living area and ensuite bathrooms – although there are a number of edges and ledges that could be hazardous for young children.

The pure white colour theme is rather heavenly. Lush rows of palms along the boundary wall, beside stepping stones that run the length of the pool, provide some colour and remind you that you are in fact still on planet earth. As if by magic, tall palm trees spring out of the Palimanan stone floor and greenery cascades from the first floor. Glass containers in the living area sprout green reeds – indeed it’s quite remarkable how lush this villa is considering it has absolutely no designated garden area.

We enjoyed doing a few laps in the large pool, hanging out on the daybed in the balé and sunbathing on the comfy rattan lounges. The pool is interestingly designed with sculpted shallow areas perfect for sunbathing whilst keeping cool in the water.

Villa Pursang

Villa Pursang

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

Villa Pursang offers the quintessential Bali holiday experience: it is a safe, comfortable, peaceful environment, yet not too far from the island’s popular beaches and towns. The large grassed garden and infinity-edge swimming pool with its adjacent thatched bale relaxation pavilion provide a beautiful focal point to the property and make the villa a great place for functions and parties, or a fabulous residence for a family holiday – with the practical advantage of having a kids’ room connected to the master bedroom. It’s suitable for most age groups, although some seniors may struggle with the stone steps that lead down to the guest bedrooms and garden (there’s no hand rail).

We found the cook and maid to be very pleasant and professional – both speak good English. Although they live out, the cook’s hours are flexible; if you want her to stay late simply pay her overtime at her reasonable hourly rate. There is no suggestion menu but the chef is pretty capable of cooking anything from Indonesian cuisine to sandwiches, burgers and pasta and will buy the ingredients required (shopping done at no extra charge apart from a minimal amount to cover petrol ) and bring you receipts. .

The villa has a great atmosphere at night, with its romantically floodlit garden and swimming pool. During the day the double lounger in the shade of the bale at the end of the pool was a favourite spot to relax and be served drinks in between time spent on the sun loungers around the pool working on our tans.

Villa Putih Semer

Villa Putih Semer

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Umalas-Kerobokan

What we loved about Villa Putih Semer were the gorgeously chic interiors, which are of the ilk that you would expect to find featured in a classy interior design magazine. The owners are passionate about food, wine, music and books, and have made this the concept of their home. The cook showcased her skills by preparing her specialty, seafood curry, which proved to be fantastic. This sophisticated villa is a rural oasis on the edge of town, where we were able to totally relax and unwind within a beautiful, natural setting with a sneaky rice field view fringed by a small river, jungle vegetation and a bamboo thicket. The villa is so peaceful, so quiet, and so private. The car and driver (included in villa rate) is a great bonus, but we found it very hard to leave the premises. There are also some simple spas in the neighbourhood but, again, for those not wanting to venture out, staff can easily arrange for massages and spa treatments administered by professional therapists (on guest account) – to be carried out on the villa’s own massage bed.

Villa Reina

Villa Reina

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Umalas-Kerobokan

We enjoyed our time at Villa Reina just chilling beside the pool and absorbing the lush garden surroundings, and we loved the incredibly private atmosphere and the convivial design of the huge living room. Despite the villa’s dusky black and purple decor, its open layout allowed the light to pour in, and in the bedrooms, these contemporary shades were softened by woollen crochet bedspreads, matching cushions and long white curtains. The ensuite bathrooms, even with their glamorous silver sinks, felt beautifully natural and Balinese.

The villa would make a wonderful hideaway for sunseeking groups of friends (as long as fights don’t break out over who gets the master suite!), and it’s a particularly good set up for a family with a couple of older kids. The master suite has a particularly great bathroom, and pamperpusses will adore the oversized moulded stone tub that’s placed just beside sliding doors onto a river-view terrace. This bathroom also makes a great spot for enjoying a massage, and a quick phone call to BaliEpicure is all that’s needed for masseurs to head your way, massage table in tow. We tried it and loved every second – it was all so easy to arrange.

The villa comes with a husband and wife staff team who look after the house and garden, as well as a night security guard. The first breakfast is included in the rate, and after this all other meals are costed according to the price of the groceries. The maid can prepare western breakfasts and simple Indonesian cuisine for lunch and dinner, and she can do the shopping on your behalf if you furnish her with some cash and a list. She works until 5pm and prepared dinner for us before she left for the day. We liked this system as it gave us plenty of privacy in the house in the evening. The kitchen is also well equipped for self-caterers, and a selection of menus (including BaliEpicure) are available for home delivery.

Rumah Lotus

Rumah Lotus

Indonesia » Bali » Ubud

Arriving at Villa Rumah Lotus at night, we immediately eased into its sense of space and peacefulness. There wasn’t a single light on the horizon to suggest another living being nearby, though we were soothed by the sound of the gamelan wafting in the breeze from the village of Kelusa out of sight across the valley.

Emerging from a blissful night’s sleep in our supremely comfortable four-poster bed the next morning, we were delighted to discover the breathtaking views ... nothing but rice fields and, distant mountains! After an excellent breakfast, we enjoyed lazing by the large pool, glimpsing the occasional farmer tending his crop and trying not to feel guilty as we reclined in the balé, waited on hand and foot. Wayan the villa manager was charming and made sure we were well looked after; he speaks several languages (English, French, Japanese among them), is very knowledgeable about the area, and attentive to small details. We appreciated the Nespresso coffee machine and choice of Twinings teas offered during the day, as well as thoughtful extras like kimonos and slippers in the bedroom.

We felt we were far from the madding crowd and yet, if we wanted the bright(er) lights, we could be in Ubud within 20 minutes! And though it was tempting to try out the many restaurants in Bali’s culture capital – which include Mozaic, voted Asia’s top restaurant – Yanti’s home cooking was enough to keep us from straying far; she prepared a beautiful seafood barbecue in the evening. And it helps that the villa wine list is extensive, courtesy of another notable Ubud restaurant, Bridges.

Rumi Villas - Villa Rumi (4BR)

Rumi Villas - Villa Rumi (4BR)

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

Villa Rumi is quite a ‘find’. We were delighted by the sense of space, and couldn’t believe how quiet it was considering it was a hop-&-skip away from the noise and action on Jalan Laksmana.  We loved the open living area, and appreciated the privacy of the master suite, with its garden terrace and outdoor tub for alfresco bathing. But our favourite daytime space by far was the balé by the pool…and having ice-cold drinks delivered to us by delightful staff throughout the day.

We were lucky to meet the owner during our stay and found his enthusiasm quite contagious. He has put so much heart into designing and building Villa Rumi, and really understands what so many families are looking for in a holiday villa.

Villa Rumi is perfect for parents who want their kids to be safe and cared for without running themselves ragged, and who want their own retreat while being only steps away from the ‘sweetshop’ for grownups that is Seminyak. It’s great to have the option of keeping kids close by in the bedroom next door, or carving out some precious privacy by assigning them a bedroom across the pool. We think that this room configuration — and the fact that all bedrooms are equally generous in size — will also be appreciated by two small families vacationing together, and by groups of friends.

Rumi Villas - Villa Jepun (3BR)

Rumi Villas - Villa Jepun (3BR)

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

A lot of care has gone into creating in Villa Jepun (and its sisters in Rumi Villas) a well-designed, value-for-money family retreat. Although the garden is small, we were happy to have a (surprisingly) large pool in place of lawn and, with the quick-dry Sunbrella-covered cushions on the sofa, we didn’t have to worry about wet swimsuits in the living area when stirring from the pool loungers to get out of the sun. The dining area did get hot during the day, but the discomfort was nothing a floor-standing fan wouldn’t remedy. We loved the air-conditioned master bedroom. The bed was extremely comfortable, the bed-linen luxurious and the pillows heavenly (normally this reviewer’s first complaint!). The multi-tasking housekeeper Dewi was a delight (it was a treat witnessing her doing the daily offerings), and the villa manager Nyoman was charming and efficient. The owner, who likens his team to a family, makes a point of meeting his guests when he’s in Bali, and his ebullience helps explain the glowing testimonials and high number of families who choose to return. Villa Jepun may not suit those looking for a swanky Seminyak pad and the level of pandering only a phalanx of full-time staff can provide, but it is perfect for parents who want their kids to be safe and cared for without running themselves ragged, and who want their own retreat while being only steps away from shops and restaurants – and all this for less than the price of a modestly-starred hotel. Holiday budgets go further too when the first 19-litre water bottle and all personal laundry is free. And, unusually, there’s no mark-up on the grocery shopping the housekeeper is happy to do for guests.
