Villas in Indonesia

Indonesia’s dizzying array of cultures, cuisines, landscapes and seascapes is quite possibly unmatched by anywhere else in the world. The myriad islands – more than 17,000 in fact – that make up this heady, steamy, vibrant archipelago speckle across the equator for nearly 5,000km. A third of these ocean-ringed islands are completely uninhabited, which must surely be a trailblazers dream.

Travellers have been drawn to this mystical region for centuries. More than a thousand years ago traders from as far away as China were sailing to the aromatic Spice Islands of Indonesia, and this precious commodity drew the Europeans in the sixteenth century too. Fast forward a few centuries and this corner of the globe is still a hotspot for foreigners who visit today for its raw beauty and rich culture rather than the spices that pepper its delicious cuisine.

Two of the loveliest islands within Indonesia’s stunning archipelago are Bali and Lombok, each of which comes with its own special charms. Whilst Bali’s cosmopolitan vibe is far removed from Lombok’s quiet, barely developed tourist trade, each island boasts dreamy beaches, volcanic landscapes, fabulous diving, charming culture and gentle, welcoming people.

Straddling the equator, Indonesia has two main seasons – wet between October and April and dry for the rest of the year – with slight geographical variations. The wet season is by no means intolerable, as storms tend to come in sudden bursts in between long spells of sunshine. The Christmas holiday period traditionally attracts a horde of visitors. And, given what awaits them on these unique and exotic islands, this is surely of no surprise.

The Shaba

The Shaba

Indonesia » Bali » Jimbaran - Bukit » Jimbaran

As soon as I walked into the Sandat Suite I felt like a princess. Thanks to owner, Zohra Boukhari, a renowned interior designer whose projects grace villas and hotels from France to Malaysia, every nook and cranny of The Shaba is dressed to the hilt. With matching crystal chandeliers, a formal dressing room and freestanding claw-foot bathtub filled with rose petals upon arrival, my room felt like something out of an Arabian Nights fairytale.

Normally in a rush to take a dip in the pool and save unpacking for later, I found myself dawdling in the opulent, air-conditioned suite. With more than enough closet space for a small army, a charming set of velvet upholstered chairs, hand-knotted area rug and silk tassels for cabinet pulls, unpacking turned into a full sensory experience. The rest of the day unfolded slowly, from the sparkling freshly squeezed orange juice to the complimentary espresso, much time was spent just poking around taking in the nuances that make The Shaba feel like a slice of exotic Marrakech in the heart of tropical Bali.

Although the villa shares a large estate compound with its sister villa, The Balquisse, as well as the main office, restaurant and spa, The Shaba is tucked away in its own private oasis. Mornings were a bit busy with the numerous staff it takes to keep all of the glass windows and lanterns crystal clear (next time I’ll ask them to take care of all that after I’ve set off for the beach), but by mid-morning, I had the place mostly to myself. With the upbeat Ku De Ta–style tunes playing on the villa’s iPod sound system, and numerous lounge areas to choose from, it didn’t take long to sink into my book for the afternoon. The mangrove next to the saltwater pool creates a lush, private ambiance that is not easy to find in this condensed resort area – a lovely neighbour to have, although a little odorous depending on the direction of the breeze. Of course, nothing a chilled glass of white wine from the kitchen’s wine fridge couldn’t cure.

Shalimar Villas - Villa Cantik

Shalimar Villas - Villa Cantik

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Seseh-Tanah Lot

Villa Cantik could not be more different from its neighbouring big sisters. When we visited, a couple with young baby had just stayed there and had clearly enjoyed the secluded privacy of the villa. Lounging in the sun or taking meals poolside at the simple table make this villa so casual and relaxing. The living room is less impressive but I suspect is little used, other than for watching a DVD of an evening or knocking up a quick drink. The whole focus of this villa is the stretch from bedrooms to pool. Shalimar is well set up for large groups, a special function or extended family – 12 bedrooms in total. Villa Cantik would be a perfect hideaway for, say, the grandparents or those needing a little space away from the main crowd. It also works perfectly well in its own right as a villa for a small family or a couple of friends. As with all the villas in Shalimar, the staff are excellent although you do have to search them out a bit at Cantik as they may assume you would rather have your privacy.

Shalimar Villas - Villa Kalima

Shalimar Villas - Villa Kalima

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Seseh-Tanah Lot

When you walk into Villa Kalima you just know you're going to have a good holiday. The living room will be the central hub of action (or inaction) and has a wonderful feel to it – so relaxing. In fact with so many beds around – sun loungers in and out of the water, sofas fit for a football team or two, a huge sprawling daybed in front of the TV – two of the master suites even have daybeds in the bathrooms – lazy afternoons with books and magazines (bring your own) will drift by all too quickly. We kicked off our shoes and were in the right mood within minutes of arrival, helped by some lovely staff who would not let us lift a finger and were only too keen to make our stay a pleasurable one. The food was delicious (you pay for the ingredients, the staff buy and cook. Prices are a bargain). Breakfast is prepared in the villa kitchen, which can be a bit intrusive, but most meals are cooked in the main kitchens for the whole Shalimar complex around the back. The pool is a delight and seems a natural extension to the main living room, and the master bedrooms are lovely although some might be a tad nervous about the semi-open bathrooms of the two ground floor ones. The basement bedrooms are fine – best suited to kids though.

The Shanti Residence

The Shanti Residence

Indonesia » Bali » Nusa Dua

We’d heard some pretty tasty things about The Shanti Residence, so we arrived with great expectations. And this is what we found: the beds were soft, the sky was blue, the sun warm and the hospitality generous. After a delicious night’s sleep in a regal bed, followed by a sumptuous breakfast, the pool and its sun loungers were about as far as we managed to get for the lion’s share of the day. The staff were professional and, more importantly, readily on hand to bring us cold drinks, lunch and complimentary afternoon tea as we lay there soaking up the sounds of birdlife and views of the distant horizon. That night the kitchen produced a particularly tasty meal for us, which left us fit to bursting. Yes, cloaked in privacy and surrounded by greenery, this stunning villa nigh on forces total relaxation from its guests. Overlooking the sea, far, far away from the crowds, with three pools, a home cinema, superb staff and a tantalising menu of foods and wines, The Shanti Residence requires no leaving. So, bring your favourite books, toys, sunscreen and lover, and get ready for the stay of stays.

Villa Sipo

Villa Sipo

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

If, like us, you enjoy being close to the action but also being able to withdraw to a peaceful haven when the mood strikes, then Villa Sipo is the place for you. Quietly and securely situated within the Sentosa Villa estate, and yet only minutes away from Bali’s most fashionable playground, we definitely enjoyed the best of both worlds here. This is a sociable, easy-to-live-in villa. We found ourselves comfortably spread out, with the teenagers lazing on loungers by the main pool, dads reading the newspaper over a coffee at the breakfast bar or catching up on the news in the study/TV room, mum’s reading up on shopping options under the garden balé but all still very much together and enjoying the villa equally.

The well-equipped kitchen is incredibly enticing so, despite the talents of the villa chef (who sensibly suggested we order our meals a day-ahead and leave him to go out and buy the groceries with a cash float from us to cover the cost), you may find yourself tempted to go shopping at one of a handful of nearby deli’s (Bali deli, Grocer & Grind or The Bali Catering Co deli) and do it yourself (with someone else to wash the dishes of course) – at least for one or two nights during your stay.

The staff are ever smiling and ready to serve whilst also being discreetly unobtrusive which was also a big plus for us. We imagine that with everything Sipo has to offer, both within the villa and on its doorstep, it will get many repeat guests.

Sira Beach House

Sira Beach House

Indonesia » Lombok » Northwest Lombok » Tanjung

This is a great villa for families or groups of friends, with loads of space, private places to escape and plenty of entertainment for all ages. The pairing of the six bedrooms means that three families can easily escape from each other in their own separate areas. During our visit to the villa the staff surprised us by setting up a sunset table for two on the sand, within a circle of candles and flaming torches, to create a most romantic feast of local dishes. Only after the sun went down did we realise that the ‘circle’ was actually a heart shape! The chef has created a great menu and can turn his hand to anything but loves to indulge his guests with Lombok specialties. Due to the remoteness of the area, you’ll be asked to order your first meal and any special requests in advance of your arrival. The kitchen will operate on a menu or grocery system according to your preferences.

Fully self-contained, we didn’t leave the confines of the villa grounds except to swim in the ocean. The electronic beeper that we were given to summon the staff at anytime was a great idea (and necessary due to the size of the place). No one claims that this villa is 100% environmentally sustainable but great care has been taken in the design to be as eco-friendly as possible. We were very aware that, although were indulging in six-star luxury, we were having a low impact – the pool is chemical free, our long showers and baths were solar heated and the water we were using was being recycled to nurture the organic gardens.

Siri Mendira - Villa Bakung

Siri Mendira - Villa Bakung

Indonesia » Bali » East Coast » Candidasa

The mesmerising views and tranquil setting of Villa Bakung left us in a state of tropical languor. Dreamy days gently slipped into balmy nights, with little to think about except whether to have pancakes or eggs for breakfast; swim in the ocean or the pool; take a trip to the beach, or stay at home. Nature is generous here, treating us to misty pink hued mornings, brilliant blue afternoon skies with low slung clouds bopping over the horizon, and views over the rocky hulk of neighbouring Penida Island, with the shadowy silhouette of Lombok in the distance.

Villa Bakung isn’t huge, but with the ocean stretching to the horizon there was a genuine sense of spaciousness and flow. We enjoyed glimpses into local life as fishermen headed off in their colourful jukung (fishing boats) or net fished in the shallows, while easy strolls down the shady lane revealed cows meandering through the coconut groves and kids playing soccer. There are no direct views of the sunset, but dusk is still a beautiful time, bathing the villa and the ocean in a soft glow.

Siri Mendira - Villa Angsoka

Siri Mendira - Villa Angsoka

Indonesia » Bali » East Coast » Candidasa

Our stay at Villa Angsoka was imbued with a sense of smugness, this was a villa to be proud of! The views are mesmerising, holding us captive for hours at a time. Nature is generous here, using the sky and ocean as her canvas; treating us to misty pink-hued mornings, brilliant blue afternoon skies with low slung clouds bopping over the horizon, and views over the rocky hulk of neighbouring island, Penida, and the shadowy silhouette of Lombok in the distance. Dreamy days gently slipped by, with little to think about except whether to have pancakes or eggs for breakfast; swim in the ocean or the pool; take a trip to the beach, or stay at the villa. While built on a grand scale, the owners designed Angsoka with harmony and comfort in mind, creating a highly liveable space which is luxurious without being over the top. The collection of Indonesian curios and antiques is more homely than museum-like in nature, while simple sofas and chairs in all-weather rattan, suit the tropical beach location. We enjoyed watching local life unfurl around us, with fishermen heading off in their colourful jukung (fishing boats) or net fishing in the shallows, while easy strolls down the shady lane revealed cows meandering through the coconut groves and kids playing soccer. While there was no direct view of the sunset, dusk was still a beautiful time, bathing the villa and the ocean in a soft pink glow, and we always looked forward to the staff lighting the decorative fires at either end of the pool, punctuating the night sky with flames.

Siri Mendira - Villa Cempaka

Siri Mendira - Villa Cempaka

Indonesia » Bali » East Coast » Candidasa

We were instantly won over by the mesmerising views and laid back tropical vibe at Villa Cempaka. And despite being on Bali’s quiet, rural south-east coast, we found plenty to do: after exploring the reef in front of the villa courtesy of the villa’s masks and snorkels, taking boat trips, and visiting the nearby beaches at Padang Bai (10km) we still managed plenty of down time to chill out at the villa and enjoy ‘the good life’. Nature, with its changing moods, treated us to a kaleidoscope of vistas, from misty mornings, to vivid blue afternoon skies scattered with fluffy clouds, and views over the rocky hulk of neighbouring island, Penida with the shadowy silhouette of Lombok in the distance. Villa Cempaka isn’t huge, but with the wide expanse of ocean stretching before us there was a genuine sense of spaciousness and flow.
