Villas in Thailand

Without doubt, Thailand is one of the world’s most enchanting holiday destinations, marked by the fact that the same visitors grace it over and over again. The reason? Soft white palm-scattered beaches lapped by a warm turquoise sea; a clear blue ocean home to colourful coral reefs and a vivacity of mesmerising marine life; lush northern hills and mountains ripe for exploring outdoors; fabulous temples both old and new; some of Asia’s most exuberant festivals; and of course, the country’s fresh-as-you-like feisty cuisine. Boasting something for everyone, Thailand offers bags of appeal.

It’s of little surprise that most of Thailand’s villas are concentrated in the sunny wave-lapped isles of Phuket and Koh Samui. Phuket rose meteorically to fame some years back and now has an international airport, restaurants run by celebrity chefs, world-class golf courses and a cosmopolitan grandeur that have made it a synonym for The Tropical Good Life around the planet. Samui is subtler in its endeavours but its natural topography and raw beauty make it an unforgettable holiday isle. Cultural Chiang Mai, in the north, is completely different yet again; rugged hills carpeted in lush jungle beg you to seek out its treasures on foot, or better still, atop an elephant’s back.

Thailand's variable geography is mirrored by its climate, which is very much affected by the monsoons. Both Phuket and Samui are generally rain-free from late December to April whilst the rainy season is June through November. The cool season (November – February) is one of the best times to visit. March to May sees the temperature reach the mid-30s.

Baan Jakawan

Baan Jakawan

Thailand » Koh Samui » Choeng Mon

Ten minutes after arriving at Baan Jakawan we found ourselves planning a party with celebrity guests. After an hour, the party had started (who needs celebrities?). Surrounded by a cool combination of luxury, nature and high-end technology, we hardly missed the beach, even though we could see one from virtually every point in the villa (there are some properties under construction nearby, but as yet, none spoil the views).

The chef's extensive repertoire covered everyone's taste and from the fresh and filling breakfast, right through to post-dinner drinks, the knowledgeable English-speaking villa manager and her diligent staff made sure we never felt ignored (although the one night we did head out for dinner, there was no-one around on our return). The music and visuals in the lounge caused initial consternation, because no-one could work out which remote to use, but once we had the iPod pumping soothing tunes into the views, such minor irritations disappeared. Bedroom-wise, we preferred the upper level suite to the more luxuriously appointed master, mainly because of its dramatic location and views, which made waking up an absolute pleasure. Having said that, the bathroom in the master is definitely a cut above, with a double rain shower that could rekindle even the most jaded romantic flame.

For adventurous types, a hire car is a must. With one, you're ten minutes from the bright lights and endless dining and shopping choices along Chaweng Beach (east) or the more sedate, beachside pleasures of Choeng Mon (west). There are two or three resorts with beachside restaurants quite close to the villa but with a wide selection of dishes on the in-villa suggestion menu, eating in is a much more appealing option. The lack of a gym may concern more active guests, but the provision of a proper lap pool and the many steps at the villa more than justify your next meal.

Overall, Baan Jakawan stands out as an ideal private escape – especially for a group of friends or families with older children. What's more, the attractive rates allow you to celebrate your good fortune in memorable style!

Baan Kata Keeree

Baan Kata Keeree

Thailand » Phuket » Kata

Baan Kata Keeree is the owner's holiday home and it’s obvious that a lot of care and hard work go into keeping the property ship-shape. The owner’s wife is a regular visitor and it shows: staff are casual but very much on their toes and standards kept high. We liked the homely feel of the property and its proximity to the beach and town but were particularly impressed with how private and peaceful it is.

The décor is great, albeit eclectic, and adds a lot of character to the property (the owner’s wife is an avid collector of Asian art pieces and quite the artist herself). This is a place that gets a lot of repeat visitors and children will love it:  the playroom has a good choice of games and activities and, as it’s at the back of the villa, it leaves mum and dad free to have a quiet read by the pool.

The food prepared by the villa’s chef was outstanding. Sitting at the long terrace table, with children coming and going and a pleasant bottle of wine, created a very casual (even Mediterranean style) mealtime and of course the view is stunning.

We revisited the villa in late 2012 and are pleased to note that it has been impeccably maintained and new additions including a heated jacuzzi in the master suite, an extension on the terrace offering wider sea views, and a massage room have only increased Baan Kata Keeree’s appeal.

Baan Kilee

Baan Kilee

Thailand » Koh Samui » Lipa Noi

It is rare to find villas like Baan Kilee. We visited as a group of families and it worked an absolute treat. The kids had a ball and fell into bed exhausted each evening giving the parents time to enjoy their vacation. The staff could not have been more welcoming and accommodating; they continually smiled despite being run ragged all hours of the day by demanding parents and children. In true Thai style the kids were taken under their wing from day 1. The food was exquisite and cold drinks, teas, coffees and snacks just kept on appearing. The villa itself is well designed - practical, functional and eminently flexible. All the bedrooms are generous and have good bathrooms. We have no problem recommending Baan Kilee - it is one of the best villas we have seen.

Baan Ling Noi

Baan Ling Noi

Thailand » Koh Samui » Bo Phut

Slouching in front of the TV at Baan Ling Noi with the French windows open onto the terrace, or standing under the rain shower gazing down at the beaches in the distance, the villa’s stunning views and surroundings have a constant and positive influence. Being this high up has its advantages, not least because you feel completely removed from the world below, and the sheer sense of space easily compensates for any lack of beachside ambience.

Although sharing with two other couples, we were surprised how easy it was to spend time alone. The 10-seater sofa in the pool pavilion quickly became the meeting point, providing the perfect excuse to stay in your swimming gear all day. From here we would drift off to swim, read, snooze, watch a film, then come back to chat and enjoy the views. The helpful staff soon caught on to this routine and kept the fridge in the pavilion well-stocked. We even had lunch served there a few times when it seemed too much of a strain to move up to the dining room.

The stairs can be a little wearing, but in the evenings the upper terrace is well worth the climb. The sunset and night views over Bo Phut to the islands are priceless and who could say no to super-fresh seafood prepared by a talented private chef (this costs extra but is still very reasonable), especially when enjoyed with a few glasses of chilled wine and good company on a balcony under the stars?

All the bedrooms are comfortable with plenty of space and storage, but the master suite by the pool is significantly more extravagant so room allocation could be an issue. The gigantic ensuite bath tub was an absolute joy and once you get used to the ‘shower with a view’ concept, daily ablutions become a whole new experience.

Baan Ling Noi is not for vertigo sufferers, those who find a lot of stairs challenging, or for families with intrepid toddlers (note that the infinity pool does have a steep drop-off). But for those who enjoy privacy and total escape, it's nothing short of a natural high.

Baan Lom Talay

Baan Lom Talay

Thailand » Phuket » Kamala

With the rich life and vivid tropical colours of Kamala Bay stretched out broadly before it, Baan Lom Talay’s location is about as good as it gets. When we could tear ourselves away from watching herons and Brahminy kites swooping over the sea from the ample terraces, the bedrooms certainly provided a fantastic retreat. Each of the five suites is a mini-villa in itself and a group of friends or an extended family will really enjoy the privacy and comfort they offer. The beautiful vaulted ceilings in three of the bedrooms give them extra grandeur and there are few better ways to toast the setting sun than while sitting in a big, bubbling outdoor jacuzzi. We enjoyed the villa’s lush, green surrounds as much as its sea views: the grounds are abloom with native trees and exotic plants, and the pink and white bougainvilleas set in boxes on all the terraces offer a striking colour contrast to the sea.

One does not appreciate Baan Lom Talay’s full size and glory until stepping inside. The stairs alone – and there are many! – are quite a wonder in the way they zigzag between the villa's four levels. The pool’s shallow section is a great feature for families, though parents will need to be watchful since there are no barriers to the deep end .

We found the villa staff to be excellent, offering us a warm welcome and being quick to assist whenever needed. We appreciated the personal touches, such as bringing fresh coffee to our bedroom terrace first thing in the morning, saving us a trip down to the kitchen. The villa manageress is especially helpful and speaks good English. Truly, the only difficulty we faced at Baan Lom Talay was leaving it!

Baan Ora Chon

Baan Ora Chon

Thailand » Koh Samui » Lipa Noi

Ora Chorn is huge with a very dignified refined feel. It is in a wonderful setting – one of the very best in Koh Samui, if not Asia. We loved the open airy feel with so much space (there is room for another two or three bedrooms). The villa has a tranquil but serious vibe which, if we were really picky, would benefit from some warm touches to make it more homely. Don’t get us wrong, it is still eminently comfortable with huge bedrooms, great bathrooms, fabulous views and an extremely private and peaceful setting. We particularly liked the poolside sala for dinner: great views and a lovely evening temperature (beware of the slippy floor though). The staff were lovely; the villa manageress in particular, who, once relaxed, proved to be a real character – confident, efficient, friendly and full of useful information. Her English is excellent (the other staff were average) and she was very determined to make our stay enjoyable – which she easily succeeded in doing.
