Villas in Thailand

Without doubt, Thailand is one of the world’s most enchanting holiday destinations, marked by the fact that the same visitors grace it over and over again. The reason? Soft white palm-scattered beaches lapped by a warm turquoise sea; a clear blue ocean home to colourful coral reefs and a vivacity of mesmerising marine life; lush northern hills and mountains ripe for exploring outdoors; fabulous temples both old and new; some of Asia’s most exuberant festivals; and of course, the country’s fresh-as-you-like feisty cuisine. Boasting something for everyone, Thailand offers bags of appeal.

It’s of little surprise that most of Thailand’s villas are concentrated in the sunny wave-lapped isles of Phuket and Koh Samui. Phuket rose meteorically to fame some years back and now has an international airport, restaurants run by celebrity chefs, world-class golf courses and a cosmopolitan grandeur that have made it a synonym for The Tropical Good Life around the planet. Samui is subtler in its endeavours but its natural topography and raw beauty make it an unforgettable holiday isle. Cultural Chiang Mai, in the north, is completely different yet again; rugged hills carpeted in lush jungle beg you to seek out its treasures on foot, or better still, atop an elephant’s back.

Thailand's variable geography is mirrored by its climate, which is very much affected by the monsoons. Both Phuket and Samui are generally rain-free from late December to April whilst the rainy season is June through November. The cool season (November – February) is one of the best times to visit. March to May sees the temperature reach the mid-30s.

Ban Laem Sor

Ban Laem Sor

Thailand » Koh Samui » Laem Sor

Ban Laem Sor is one of the more modest villas we've seen on Koh Samui, but what it lacks in extravagant amenities it makes up for with privacy and tropical ambiance. After all, not everyone needs a flat-screen TV in their bedroom or a private jacuzzi tub in the ensuite. In fact, removing such distractions meant we spent more time exploring and appreciating the beach and natural surroundings. Walks from this villa are very therapeutic, either along the sand or through the coastal lanes (best undertaken in the cooler parts of the day).

If you choose to self-cater it's a good idea to stock up at one of the island's larger supermarkets (Tesco Lotus or Big C) in Chaweng (20km from the villa) at the beginning of your stay. There's not much available locally in terms of provisioning, but having a handful of local restaurants nearby does mean you can take the easy dining option if you feel like a night off.

Adventurous types can plan their stay around some interesting trips: it's a short drive to waterfalls, elephant rides or a little local village culture. You can even rent a long-tail boat from Tong Krut (3km) to explore the offshore islands. This is not really a base for night owls though: Lamai is a little too far away for late-night driving and once you leave the main ring road there's not much in the way of street lighting. Relaxed, home-based entertainment was our preference, with some soothing music on the stereo (bring your favourite CDs) and a nice bottle of wine selected from the in-villa wine list with dinner.

Laem Sor was being spruced up when we returned for a follow-up visit in June 2013. The villa was looking good, with a new lick of paint and varnish, and more garden lighting being installed.

Villa Belle

Villa Belle

Thailand » Koh Samui » Plai Laem

Villa Belle catches the breeze perfectly from its hilltop position. And the views! We loved the couches on the deck – with their white cushions and low coffee table they made the perfect spot for an afternoon read over a cup of tea. The WiFi signal is good out here too, so you can catch up on emails while soaking up the sun – just watch out for ‘laptop tan’ on the thighs.

As evening arrived we were reluctant to leave the view, so chose to dine outside (pleasantly surprised that the elevation and breeze meant we weren’t pestered by mosquitos). Samui’s resorts let off fireworks most evenings, and it was as though we were being treated to our own private show. Then there are the luminous fluorescent green lights that appear on the horizon as it gets dark. At first glance it looks like alien spacecraft is coming in to land but, in fact, the lights belong to night fishing boats and are to attract squid to the surface. The villa’s attractive lighting shines at night – in both senses of the word – and our turn-down was unique with towels arranged to form of a heart and sprinkled with flowers.

Should you decide to hire a chef, there’s a comprehensive selection menu at the villa, or you can browse the recipe book of Thai dishes for even more choice. The chef prepared some pasta and a Greek salad for us, both of which were well made and tasty. Comfortable beds dressed with white linen and with a choice of foam and feather pillows, meant a peaceful sleep before our pre-breakfast swim. Khun Noom sets out an impressive Continental breakfast, and thanks to the villa’s state-of-the-art coffee machine we could enjoy cappuccinos too.

Blue Samui

Blue Samui

Thailand » Koh Samui » Bang Por-Nathon

There's something refreshingly independent about Blue Samui. The secluded setting is quite unusual for a fast developing island because there are no other properties surrounding the villa (bar one, a little further down the hill, which barely enters the view). This means you quickly relax into your own, private world – shoes and watch off, beachwear on. Once you've stocked the fridge at one of the island's big supermarkets, the urge to venture out fades, at least during the day. The homely atmosphere, combined with abundant on-hand facilities lets you set your own schedule and this generally involves little more than eating, lounging, reading and drifting into the view. Of course, unless you're someone that sees cooking as a leisure activity, the lack of a chef means dining out becomes part of the routine, but with a hire car there are plenty of options close by. The two on-site staff are very keen to please and will happily serve snacks and drinks so you don't have to leave you sun lounger too often. A poolside barbecue is also a must at least once during your stay. The evening light makes those breathtaking views almost surreal. Although the guest bedrooms share a bathroom, the rooms themselves are nicely furnished, spacious and the wide verandah is almost an extra lounge. The views from the nicely hidden bath tub in the master suite make bathing a special pleasure that adds to the indulgence in what, for us, was a pleasingly private and relaxing island retreat.

Villa Kalyana

Villa Kalyana

Thailand » Koh Samui » Laem Sor

A villa with the ambiance and amenities of an exclusive private-island-hotel, but one where guests have the luxury of dictating their own schedule and choosing who they share precious holiday time with. This was the impression we took away with us following our recent stay at Villa Kalyana.

Whether you want a tropical holiday retreat for family and friends, an exclusive executive escape, a dream wedding venue or space for some other special celebration, Villa Kalyana fits the bill.  With nine privately positioned and thoughtfully appointed guestrooms (five with romantic garden bathrooms) plus a kids bunk room, and an abundance of cool communal areas, both outside and in – including a dining room fit for a banquet (and a kitchen to cater for one), a games room for the gents, movie room for the kids and poolside lounge for the ladies – options for fun and relaxation are seemingly endless.

The villa’s quiet beachside location on Samui’s southernmost tip may not suit the clubbing crowd whose idea of the perfect holiday is to be out on the town every night, but it’s ideal for large group gatherings who enjoy their own company. There’s little need for nightlife, restaurants, shops and other amusements at this self-contained villa where a team of willing staff are on hand to look after you; there’s an impressive selection of gizmos gadgets and games for entertainment, and friends and family provide all the company you could wish for. The huge (chemical-free) swimming pool, vast gardens and virtually private beachfront make Kalyana a great choice for families with energetic children too.

Kalyana only opened to guests mid 2012 and with a few finishing touches, including a more confident and polished dining service, we feel sure that it will soon rank easily among the best private luxury villa experiences on the island.

Kamala Hills Naka 12 (James Bond Villa)

Kamala Hills Naka 12 (James Bond Villa)

Thailand » Phuket » Kamala

With this villa's hidden hillside location and secret pool trapdoor, James Bond himself couldn't have come up with a more clever design for enjoying a tropical retreat. It made for an exhilarating start to the day to drop straight into the water from the bedside and emerge into the pool for a morning swim. Why does the master suite have a trapdoor to the pool? Well, why not? It's a fun feature that makes this villa truly one of a kind.

We really enjoyed our prime view of the jungle from all rooms, and especially from the terrace and pool where we spent most of our day. Floating on our back, looking up at the canopy overhead was truly a dream. By night, the jungle's drama continued with floodlights pointed towards it. On our first evening at the villa there was a brief rain shower, so when the lights came on we were treated to the wonderful sight of thick foliage glistening in the darkness, almost like a natural Christmas light show (we did stay here just after Christmas so it was a nice, festive touch). By day, we sat back and watched a squirrel jump out onto a papaya tree to snack on its bulbous green fruit while its avian friends flitted in and around the trees. A Chinese pond heron (we think) sometimes flew down to pose at the pool's edge – perhaps a bit of a show-off.

The bedrooms, with queen- or king-sized beds, offer a nice balance for kids and adults, though their sparse furnishings and lack of entertainment equipment make them suited for sleeping only. Which is fine, since this villa is more about enjoying time together in the pool and comfortable living-dining areas.

Having no staff in the villa meant we were left to our own devices for dining, but a list of places – some of which deliver – in a very useful villa guide led us to some good choices. The villa management company is helpful in getting you settled in and making recommendations for dining and getting around – it also provides an airport pick-up service (for an extra charge) though we had our own transport.

Villa Kya

Villa Kya

Thailand » Koh Samui » Bophut

There’s a freshness and brightness about Villa Kya that’s quite exhilarating. Despite being situated so obviously high above the ocean waves, the villa almost has the feel of a luxury yacht.  We put it down to the gleaming white surfaces, the gently curved design that follows the contours of the hillside, the sail-like roof and, perhaps most of all, the stunningly positioned ‘Moon Terrace’, which rivals the most luxurious of top decks.

There is a tremendous choice of places to relax here.  Inside, our top marks went to the breakfast bar in the kitchen – what a great place to sip a coffee and start the day!  Outside, it was tougher to chose a winner:  On a lounger by the pool? On a bar stool in the pool? Enjoying a quiet read in the shade of the lazing lounge? Sipping a sundowner on the Moon Terrace?  They’re all up there, and they all have the most amazing views to boot.

Bedrooms are simply, stylishly and romantically furnished (especially the master) and beds are very comfortable.  There may not be acres of space in the guest rooms, but the views through the wide glass doors more than make up for that.  The villa only opened for business in August 2012 and everything is new and sparkling. The staff are cheerful and obliging and the owner/managers couldn’t be more helpful.  We highly recommend sampling the talented Khun Kiat’s pomelo salad and Thai chicken curry. Delicious!

L'Orchidee Residences - Villa Aranda X2

L'Orchidee Residences - Villa Aranda X2

Thailand » Phuket » Patong

We really enjoyed the beautifully presented Villa Aranda with excellent facilities. The views over Patong are stunning and the location is excellent for restaurants, shopping etc. Being close to Patong is not everyone’s choice but once in the villa you are well away from it. The huge open-plan living area is excellent, with a great terrace offering super views. The staff are good - from the security guards to the maids. This villa is excellent for large families, groups or two families travelling together. A family travelling with parents may appreciate the separate Annex.

We revisited this villa recently, three years after our initial stay, and were impressed to find the villa in immaculate condition, and it offers even better views than before with a new extension added to the first-floor terrace.

L'Orchidee Residences - Villa Cattleya C10

L'Orchidee Residences - Villa Cattleya C10

Thailand » Phuket » Patong

This graceful sea-view retreat set up in the hills overlooking Patong is one of the few villas in Phuket that can truly claim to offer the best of both worlds. Within minutes we could reach the busy beach resort town of Patong and delve into its myriad nightlife, dining and shopping choices – easily escaping back up into Villa Cattleya’s peaceful surrounds when we wanted to. Our worries disappeared as we sunk in and stretched out in style. The level of comfort is superb throughout the villa, from the plush living room furnishings to the fully shaded pool terrace with heaps of space for lounging or dining, to the private bedrooms. We could see a real sense of care throughout with high-quality craftsmanship in all the details including the wooden furnishings and the fresco-adorned wall along the pool.

Though a chef and in-villa service staff can be provided on request, we opted to be left to our own devices and ordered our food from the estate’s à la carte menu. Meals were brought quickly and were superb; mainly Thai with some innovative flourishes. Though the indoor dining table was lovely, we usually dined out on the terrace to best enjoy the sea view and the fan-cooled fresh air.

Overall, there’s something to satisfy everyone at Villa Cattleya C10: space, calm, a family-friendly environment, a terrific range of services and facilities for entertaining in style, and easy access to a wealth of attractions for those seeking more adventure – be it a challenging round of golf or a night out on the town. Kids will delight in having the choice of playing in the villa’s private pool or hanging out with other children in the estate’s communal pool and shallow children’s pool at the clubhouse, just a few minutes’ walk away.

L'Orchidee Residences - Villa Cattleya C5a

L'Orchidee Residences - Villa Cattleya C5a

Thailand » Phuket » Patong

Villa Cattleya C5a is among the few villas where the phrase, ‘having it all’, is not an overstatement. We could retreat completely into its tranquil and luxurious surrounds yet if the mood struck we could venture out to some of Phuket’s liveliest and most interesting dining and entertainment spots within minutes.

The vaulted roof and teak detailing make the villa look exceptionally majestic yet we felt very comfortable right away. We made full use of the terrace and pool areas and, although the pool was not huge, the lovely stone wall and elephant statues make it a nice oasis for soaking up the sea view while splashing around.

Though there are no live-in kitchen or cleaning staff (except by request, at extra charge), service here is very flexible and efficient. The meals we ordered in from the estate’s central kitchen were excellent, prepared in authentic Thai style with a few innovative touches, such as the laarb gai (minced chicken) patties that could be dipped in a spicy sauce. A daily maid service takes care of housekeeping and the estate manager readily dealt with our every request. The management team can also help organise larger events, and we were impressed by preparations for a team building event taking place around the shared pool area one evening during our visit.

With such a nice balance of shared space, privacy and great access to the beach and island attractions, we could find little reason why small families or couples with a wide range of interests would not have an excellent stay at Villa Cattleya C5a.
