Villas in Thailand

Without doubt, Thailand is one of the world’s most enchanting holiday destinations, marked by the fact that the same visitors grace it over and over again. The reason? Soft white palm-scattered beaches lapped by a warm turquoise sea; a clear blue ocean home to colourful coral reefs and a vivacity of mesmerising marine life; lush northern hills and mountains ripe for exploring outdoors; fabulous temples both old and new; some of Asia’s most exuberant festivals; and of course, the country’s fresh-as-you-like feisty cuisine. Boasting something for everyone, Thailand offers bags of appeal.

It’s of little surprise that most of Thailand’s villas are concentrated in the sunny wave-lapped isles of Phuket and Koh Samui. Phuket rose meteorically to fame some years back and now has an international airport, restaurants run by celebrity chefs, world-class golf courses and a cosmopolitan grandeur that have made it a synonym for The Tropical Good Life around the planet. Samui is subtler in its endeavours but its natural topography and raw beauty make it an unforgettable holiday isle. Cultural Chiang Mai, in the north, is completely different yet again; rugged hills carpeted in lush jungle beg you to seek out its treasures on foot, or better still, atop an elephant’s back.

Thailand's variable geography is mirrored by its climate, which is very much affected by the monsoons. Both Phuket and Samui are generally rain-free from late December to April whilst the rainy season is June through November. The cool season (November – February) is one of the best times to visit. March to May sees the temperature reach the mid-30s.

The View

The View

Thailand » Koh Samui » Taling Ngam

Although only two of us visited the View, we could appreciate just how ideal this villa would be for group holidays and special celebrations – it really is designed for entertaining. Villa manager, Khun Opal, and her assistant, Khun Nokkie, as well as several other unobtrusive staff, keep the villa immaculate and cater to guests’ every whim, including arranging parties.

We arrived late afternoon and were welcomed with refreshing homemade lemonade. We didn’t have to wait long to witness Taling Ngam’s famous sunset – with Khun Opal’s signature cocktails as the cherry on the top. We gave the chef carte blanche at dinnertime, our only requirement being that the meal was vegetarian. He served a vegetarian Thai green curry with steamed rice, sesame seeds and pumpkin, and deep-fried tofu with a tamarind sauce. Both dishes were beautifully presented and delicious, with just the right amount of spice.

As Tech-junkies, we enjoyed this Mac-happy villa. Not only is there an iMac computer for guest use, but this also controls the entertainment centre, from the music that’s piped throughout the villa and garden, to the Apple TV with over 700 movies and the iPod with over 4,000 songs to select. We could sync our own iPads, and MacBooks with the system too. It was such a tough choice whether to watch a movie on the indoor living room projector, the outside lounge projector, or even on the lawn near the beach, that we gave up and decided to take advantage of the blissful peace and quiet and catch up on some reading instead!

We woke to cheerful birdsong and, with the touch of a bedside button, remote-controlled blinds let in the morning light and the endless sea views. Energised on return from our early morning walk along the villa’s virtually private beach, the smell of freshly baked croissants and coffee lured us to the dining room where we enjoyed a breakfast accompanied by views of the Five Islands.

We only wish we’d had more time to take full advantage of the View’s amazing facilities: kayaking around the bay, a friendly game of croquet on the lawn, an invigorating muay Thai lesson with a personal trainer, or a cooking lesson with the chef. We could only imagine how much a child would enjoy exploring this villa –especially with its dedicated children’s wing – although we did discover that with the automated blinds down at night and the reading spotlight on, you’ve got the perfect backdrop for a shadow puppet show!

Villa Nava

Villa Nava

Thailand » Koh Samui » Bang Por-Nathon

We felt instantly at home at Villa Nava; partly because of the villa’s comfortable furnishings and convivial layout – it seems the most natural thing in the world to walk through the front door, drop your bag and grab a stool at the big white breakfast island to chat with whoever’s in the kitchen – and partly because Irene, the villa’s lovely manageress, radiates a motherly warmth that just makes you feel relaxed and looked after straight away.

Irene met us at the foot of the steep hill that Nava is built on and smilingly escorted us up to the villa, where, on entering through the double doors, we were greeted by the beautiful view out over the pool and palm tops to a sparkling ocean dotted with tropical island gems. Pristine forested hills and Samui’s attractive coastline disappear southwards, with Nathon town’s long jetty just visible in the mid distance.

Villa Nava’s living room, dining area and kitchen are almost totally surrounded by glass (most of which folds back to create a bright open-sided space) providing easy access to the pool and the breezy sala where, come evening, we sat on black-cushioned sofas toasting the magnificent sunsets.

The bedrooms, split two in the main house and two in the guest bungalow, are well set up for a couple of families or for an extended family (as long and grandma and grandpa are not hampered by stairs – as there are quite a lot of them between the bungalow and the main living floor), and we liked that all the rooms offered pleasant outdoor terraces for a quiet read or rest.

The villa is self-catering, but Irene will help with the shopping and even organizes for meals to be delivered from some nearby restaurants. Alternatively, a local cook will come to the villa and prepare mouth-watering Thai cuisine for a very reasonable charge.

The Villas Nai Harn - Emerald Villa

The Villas Nai Harn - Emerald Villa

Thailand » Phuket » Nai Harn

‘Emerald’ is certainly an apt name for this holiday home whose terraces are perfectly positioned to drink in the lush, tropical hillside views. This is truly a family-oriented villa within easy reach of Phuket’s most family-friendly beach – kids of all ages will absolutely love it here.

We really enjoyed Emerald’s tranquillity and the feeling that you’re hidden away from the world while enjoying all the modern comforts you’d expect in a luxury holiday home. We appreciated the small touches that give the villa added comfort, like the bean-bag chairs and having ceiling fans in the bathrooms (anyone who has ever found themselves ready for another shower within five minutes of having their first one will know what we mean!). The huge pool terrace, with its sala dining area and barbecue, made us wish we’d brought along half a dozen more friends since it’s ideal for pool parties. With meals mostly taken care of by the full-time housekeeper–cook and a wealth of dining choices to enjoy within minutes, the only major decision during our stay was: Beach or Pool? This happy dilemma was usually answered with: Both! Refreshing laps in the pool by morning were followed with trips down to the beach in the late afternoon to watch the sun sink into the sea behind the silhouettes of tall-masted yachts. Total tropical bliss. (Declaration of bias: Nai Harn is our favourite beach in Phuket, so we are likely to have extra fondness for any villa located in this area!)

YL Residence No. 17

YL Residence No. 17

Thailand » Koh Samui » Laem Set

Arriving at YL Residence for a friend's birthday weekend, I initially thought I'd come to the wrong place. On first inspection, the collection of modern, white buildings seemed to be part of a resort - and indeed it could be - but instead, the owners choose to rent the entire place as a private residence, which provides a unique opportunity to share a stunning space with a close group friends or family.

The suites and communal areas are all exquisitely furnished and the entire property is incredibly well staffed. This means you can either choose your spot and stick to it, or make the most of what is essentially a millionaire's playground. Our host had plenty of people dropping in and out throughout the weekend, plus 20 of us staying over, so it was easy to drift between different scenes and social groups at will.

The poolside party included parents and kids, who tended to favour the sun deck and pool lounge, the drinkers meanwhile hung out in the club house bar with their ipods permanently plugged in to the Bose music system, the beach bums switched between the sand, the sea and the games room, while the inner circle often retreated with the birthday boy and his partner to the master YL Suite, which became affectionately known as "the lux lounge". Every space had its own dedicated staff with exquisite meals, snacks and a full range of drinks served at almost any hour. The barbecue was a particular treat and big enough for a banquet. Unequivocal extravagance!

As an extended party pad, YL Residence is hard to beat, but not everyone would choose to stay here on a wild weekend. Unofficially, it is the largest villa in Thailand so rock star connotations are virtually unavoidable, but the property also manages to hold onto its natural side thanks largely to the dramatic beachfront setting and the forest of coconut palms and casuarina trees that fill its grounds (a fellow guest suggested cutting a few of them down to build a 9-hole golf course!). Even for those on a more sedate holiday, the villa offers a one-of-a kind experience. The staff, cuisine and multitude of diversions make it a rounded luxury holiday haven. The only drawback being that without a gang of fellow guests to share its vastness, one could feel a little lonely and isolated.
