Dea Villas - Villa Radha

Dea Villas - Villa Radha

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

There have been a few changes since we stayed at Villa Radha two and a half years ago, with the addition of two new villas to the enclave, a children’s playground, a gym and a spa. Staying at Villa Radha now means you have the choice of two spas on your doorstep. We decided, however, that we preferred the bygone era ambiance of the totally private wooden spa building within Villa Radha’s magical garden. Like the villa itself, the spa is another antique building so it is more in keeping with the overall character and charm. We noticed that with a total of five villas on the estate there is a now a little bit of hustle and bustle (and dare we say modernity) outside of Radha’s garden walls, but tucked away in our own private paradise – the gardens have grown and are even more beautiful than we remembered – we were able to completely relax and enjoy the wonderful service of the staff, and the great food. If you’re into sleek contemporary design the ethnic, rustic style of Villa Radha may not to be to your taste, but it is nevertheless immaculate and very comfortable, with all the trappings of the 21st century. There is no sitting room as such, but we enjoyed relaxing on the veranda, and were also very comfortable watching TV and movies in the air conditioned bedroom. As for the garden, well this is a landscaping triumph: forget any ideas of a modern Zen-like space, this garden will bewitch you with its tropical abundance of giant taro leaves, spiky pandanus, fan, parlour and travellers palms, bird’s nest ferns, heliconia, flowering frangipani, and rare fruit trees. It will make you wonder how it can be so full (almost to the point of being overgrown) and yet so meticulously maintained. At first we thought it was a little bit expensive for a one-bedroom villa, but when you consider the uniqueness of the property, the space, the facilities, the butler service, the pool, spa and gorgeous garden, you’ll probably agree that it’s extremely good value for money.

The Layar - Villa 2A (1BR)

The Layar - Villa 2A (1BR)

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

We’d done our research and thought we had realistic notions about where we were going, but The Layar surpassed all our expectations.  The villas’ design works on so many levels: it’s intriguingly different and totally tropical, but what we hadn’t anticipated was just how ‘at home’ we would feel as soon as we crossed the stepping stones into the gorgeous garden and saw the sweep of roof, from under which the living and dining areas beckoned.

The villas are well equipped with satellite channel TVs, sound systems and a good range of kitchen utensils (in the unlikely event that you might chose to self-cater), while bedrooms and bathrooms – all of which are generously sized – are fitted with quality furnishings and adorned with interesting Indonesian art and artefacts.

And there’s plenty to keep all ages and interests entertained.  The gardens, furnished decks and pools, coupled with TV areas, lounge and dining spaces will be enough for some, but lazy days can be punctuated with in-villa spa treatments carried out by The Layar’s professional therapists and delicious barbecue dinners cooked in the gardens of your own private oasis.  When we did finally tear ourselves away from our new ‘home’ we enjoyed venturing out to explore the shops, restaurants and cafes of Seminyak, all of which were easy to reach on foot.  Cocktails on the beach at La Lucciola, followed by an excellent dinner at ‘The Junction’ made a great end to the day.

Selong Selo - 5B-2 Villa Walet (1BR)

Selong Selo - 5B-2 Villa Walet (1BR)

Indonesia » Lombok » South Lombok » Selong Belanak

Me and my best friend wanted to head out for a weekend trip, and Lombok looked tempting with its pristine beaches. We booked a studio villa, as it was perfect for the both of us, spacious and self-contained.

The bed was large and plush, facing the glass doors which looked out towards the ocean beyond the plunge pool. Which brings me to my favourite part of the villa - our private pool. Many afternoons were spent just chatting around the pool, cocktail in hand, nature’s beauty laid out in front of us.

We woke up to gorgeous views, and a pleasant breeze that flowed in when we pulled open the glass doors. What to do for the rest of the day was a favourite topic, with so many options to choose from - surfing on the beach below, picnicking under a waterfall and cycling to villages nearby being a few of them.

This was a vacation we both will always remember. A large part of that goes to the stunning villa that we stayed in.

Selong Selo - 9B-2 Villa Manju (1BR)

Selong Selo - 9B-2 Villa Manju (1BR)

Indonesia » Lombok » South Lombok » Selong Belanak

Who would have thought that nestled into an untouched corner of Lombok, would lie such absolute luxury? Selong Selo is a little oasis in an already stunning island. Surrounded by green hills and with sea views that hold your gaze for hours, we couldn’t find a more beautiful spot, even if we tried.

The one-bedroom villa we stayed at was just perfect for me and my partner. A large king-size bed, plush with crisp white sheets looked out through the glass walls, giving a feeling of living in the outdoors.

The villa was luxurious and dreamy, with stylish furnishings and traditional artefacts lending it a certain charm. We woke up to gorgeous views, itching to slide back the glass doors and let the outdoors in. Hands wrapped around a hot cup of tea, brewed in our kitchenette, we could sit for hours on the patio, just staring at the scene unfurling in front of us.

The private pool was a much-loved luxury, inviting us in for a dip morning and night. And yes, also the perfect spot for a photograph to make friends jealous back home.

Though we have never surfed before, we were told a trip to Lombok is incomplete without trying out the waves and one day we did just that. We took the shuttle down to Selong Belanak Beach and enrolled into a beginners’ surfing lesson. What absolute fun, it was. To be honest, we did fall into the water more than once, but to our credit, we were riding the waves upright by the end of the day. So we treated ourselves to cocktails at the beach, watching the sun go down, lighting up the sky on its way.

Tassana Pra

Tassana Pra

Thailand » Koh Samui » Bang Rak-Big Buddha

Staying at Tassana Pra feels a little like travelling back in time. Walking barefoot on teakwood floors surrounded by antique, homely touches it is easy to imagine life in a more genteel era. Anyone with artistic or literary aspirations would certainly feel at home in this villa, but it has also been carefully designed to offer a range of material indulgences. The free-form pool is a particular delight, especially with the playful addition of a hanging dive platform from the upper terrace. All the living areas are comfortable as well as being beautifully decorated. Options for reflection and relaxation range from lying by the pool to reclining on a soft daybed on the terrace, sinking into one of the deep sofas in the living room or relaxing with a book in the garden gazebo. Meals can be taken in or outside – it’s particularly enjoyable to have dinner served on the terrace, allowing you to enjoy the softly lit garden and twinkling lights of Big Buddha bay beyond.

The master and upstairs guest bedrooms are also worthy of special mention. They are decorated with such delicate antique style you could be forgiven for thinking you'd been invited to a royal residence. The master suite’s dressing room definitely gives this part of the villa a stately ambiance, with the large wooden dresser and built-in panelled wardrobes fit for most princesses.

Whichever spot you choose, the views and surroundings at Tassana Pra inspire a sense of quiet contentment. The managers, Khun Aoy and Khun Wally, could easily be characters from a Victorian novel. Their calm dedication to duty, smiling faces and knowledge of all things relevant make them as much a feature of the house as its stunning architecture.

Villa Anjali Purple

Villa Anjali Purple

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

Villa Anjali Purple is a gem-like hideaway; a bit of a love nest. We loved the clean, contemporary architecture, the Indonesian textiles, ethnic art and the sense of privacy and independence. It was great to be so near the Petitenget scene with its beach and restaurants, and yet go back to somewhere peaceful and quiet. The villas are so well designed that despite their proximity, one is not aware of other guests.

Villa Anjali Purple’s open-air plan fills the living and dining space with the light and colour of the small garden. We thought this villa was the prettiest of the four in the Anjali complex. The purple colour scheme is surprisingly well-handled and gives the villa an opulent feel. The rich grey marble floors deepen the feeling of luxury.

We felt at home as soon as we’d unpacked. The bedroom is comfortably furnished; the hot water in the bathroom comes on instantly (unlike in many older properties) and there was plenty of storage in the dressing area. We applaud the sturdy timber desks that are big enough to work at, with room for a laptop and files next to the flat-screen TV, and intelligently placed electrical outlets alongside.

We enjoyed being able to stock the kitchen with our favourite provisions from the up-scale Bali Deli supermarket (about 6km) and slipping over to the madly wonderful Potato Head Beach Club (2km) for lunch, a swim in the pool, and a long walk along the beach. In the evening it was easy to order a taxi and fully indulge in Seminyak’s nightlife.

A swim in the villa’s pool was fresh in the morning, a perfect way to un-wind after shopping, and deliciously private at night. There was only one sun lounger, but we just spread a beach towel on the lawn.

The housekeeping staff were friendly and courteous, with big Balinese smiles. We also felt well-looked after by the gracious and competent villa manager. But guests are mainly left to their own devices.
