Villa Abiente

Villa Abiente

Thailand » Phuket » Cape Yamu

Abiente is a superb holiday villa for active, modern couples and groups of friends, with its chic styling and setting on Phuket’s east coast, on the doorstep of the region’s best sites for yachting, kayaking and other outdoor adventures.  For those of us with less ambitious holiday plans, it’s also a fine place to do absolutely nothing but relax poolside and bask in the tropical sun!  The open-plan layout invited us to gather, relax and flit between the cool white interior and the pool with ease.  Each of the three bedrooms is similarly designed and furnished with king-size beds and TVs, though only two enjoy a sea view and poolside setting – so there might have to be a coin-toss on arrival.  We were among the first to visit this newly built villa (mid-2017) and loved its bright and welcoming ambiance with a no-fuss minimalist edge and a few touches of whimsy here and there including a big mural splashed across the entry hall.  Abiente is among the newer villas in Baan Yamu, a decade-old estate with exceptional guest facilities available including a well-equipped gym, which we didn’t try out (lazy!), and the huge 75-metre pool, a good option for serious swimmers.

Infinity Blue Phuket

Infinity Blue Phuket

Thailand » Phuket » Natai Beach

On a beach that’s home to some very large villas, Infinity Blue is a more modest Natai escape, but for our family’s holiday requirements – sun, sand, sea and swims – it was the perfect choice. Khun Sao, the full-time housekeeper, greeted us warmly on arrival and we quickly settled in for an afternoon of drifting down to the beach to cool our feet in the sea before retreating for a lazy read on the shaded terrace while watching the kids splash around in the pool.

As the villa’s name suggests, the views are endlessly blue and mesmerising and we made sure to have all our meals alfresco on the terrace so we wouldn’t miss a minute of the changing colours as the sun dipped towards the horizon. There’s no in-villa chef included but this didn’t hinder us from eating very well during our stay! On our first evening, Khun Sao arranged for delivery of a selection of Thai dishes from a nearby restaurant, and we were pleasantly surprised when she also thoughtfully presented and served the meal, which was delicious. (Especially the tom yam.)

We also enjoyed the chance to get out and explore some of the dining spots in the area. We can recommend the Aleenta resort restaurant and Baba Beach Club – both are set along the beach just a short stroll away from the villa. And we also enjoyed a more rustic lunch at a beachfront place about five kilometres to north called Rabiang Lay, where we sat under thatch roofed huts gorging on tasty soft-shell crab curry. Paradise found!

Khun Sao is friendly and eager to please, although her English skills are a bit limited. We were able to communicate well enough on our visit, but were reassured to know we could call the villa manager in case we did need more assistance. Overall, Infinity Blue is a fine family escape that’s quietly elegant and comfy – with those priceless views. With its four bedrooms set in two separate pavilions it’s especially well-suited for extended families or a group of friends.

Naam Sawan

Naam Sawan

Thailand » Phuket » Cape Yamu

Staying at Villa Naam Sawan is a dream come true, and we were entranced by the spectacular views over Phang Nga Bay. Indoor spaces exude comfort beyond belief: especially attractive are the unique décor and furnishings, each with stories of their own.  The ensuite bedrooms are luxurious and spacious, and very well situated for easy access to the pool deck – where we spent many happy hours lounging on daybeds between refreshing dips in the pool, swim-up cocktails and games of billiards.  Sundowners sipped in the alfresco dining pavilion were nearly as magnificent as sunrises over the dramatic limestone karsts of Phang Nga Bay.  The warm-hearted team of staff was courteous, pleasant and kind, and prepared impressive meals worthy of top-class restaurants.  Villa Naam Sawan offered everything we were hoping for and more, and all within easy reach of many of Phuket’s best sites and attractions.

Villa Sammasan

Villa Sammasan

Thailand » Phuket » Surin

Villa Sammasan is a great family villa – stylish enough to satisfy those seeking a touch of luxury but comfortable and welcoming for kids, too.  We spent most of our time here on the pool terrace, where the kids flipped for the pool, literally, as they spent a lot of time perfecting their forward jump flips while we watched in comfort from the shady sala.  We had a short stay yet the weather conditions ran the gamut from glorious sunshine to torrential rains, and the villa was a lovely haven either way.  The ultra comfortable living room and media room were great retreats for games and movies when the sun disappeared.  The larger four-bedroom Villa Napalai  next door is under the same management so big groups or extended families needing more space might consider booking Sammasan and Napalai together.

The staff here are helpful and amazingly, considering the picky eaters among us, the chef’s meals were relished and devoured by all.  Dinner was a standout event: we thought we’d ordered far too many dishes, but they were so delicious we finished them all.  The yam nue yang (spicy beef salad) and pla nueng manao (steamed sea bass in lime and garlic) were simply spectacular, and we watched in awe as our kids ate the fish up like candy.

Sava Beach Villas - Villa Roxo

Sava Beach Villas - Villa Roxo

Thailand » Phuket » Natai Beach

Villa Roxo’s design has a modern edge, yet its ambiance is cheerful, relaxed, and feels just right for the tropical setting.  It’s easy to settle in, slide open the heavy glass doors and let the sea breezes flow as generously as the champagne you’ll crack open to celebrate arriving at one of Thailand’s most beautiful, peaceful beaches.  The staff are equally as cheerful, and the maid always seemed to magically arrive just when a glass needed filling or a towel sourced.  Though families are welcome, the sophisticated Sava leans more towards groups of adults – more ‘hen party’ hang-out than nest for mother hens.  We didn’t party during our stay (we had work to do!) but with the chef and the divine open layout, a barbecue poolside soiree is a must-do here.  There’s very little to fault with this villa, though, if we really have to be picky, being in the second tier of the estate means it takes that extra few seconds to reach the beach, and views are partially blocked by the villas in the front row.  Although there’s plenty of privacy here, and peace and quiet abound in large doses, Roxo is part of an estate so it lacks the feel of a total hideaway.  While we loved the sunny days, our favourite time was the evening, just after sunset.  Sipping a glass of wine while soaking our feet in the pool, gazing up at the sparkling night sky to the sound of the waves – ahh, those tranquil tropical nights are heavenly!

Baan Lom Talay

Baan Lom Talay

Thailand » Phuket » Kamala

With the rich life and vivid tropical colours of Kamala Bay stretched out broadly before it, Baan Lom Talay’s location is about as good as it gets. When we could tear ourselves away from watching herons and Brahminy kites swooping over the sea from the ample terraces, the bedrooms certainly provided a fantastic retreat. Each of the five suites is a mini-villa in itself and a group of friends or an extended family will really enjoy the privacy and comfort they offer. The beautiful vaulted ceilings in three of the bedrooms give them extra grandeur and there are few better ways to toast the setting sun than while sitting in a big, bubbling outdoor jacuzzi. We enjoyed the villa’s lush, green surrounds as much as its sea views: the grounds are abloom with native trees and exotic plants, and the pink and white bougainvilleas set in boxes on all the terraces offer a striking colour contrast to the sea.

One does not appreciate Baan Lom Talay’s full size and glory until stepping inside. The stairs alone – and there are many! – are quite a wonder in the way they zigzag between the villa's four levels. The pool’s shallow section is a great feature for families, though parents will need to be watchful since there are no barriers to the deep end .

We found the villa staff to be excellent, offering us a warm welcome and being quick to assist whenever needed. We appreciated the personal touches, such as bringing fresh coffee to our bedroom terrace first thing in the morning, saving us a trip down to the kitchen. The villa manageress is especially helpful and speaks good English. Truly, the only difficulty we faced at Baan Lom Talay was leaving it!

L'Orchidee Residences - Villa La Cigale C11

L'Orchidee Residences - Villa La Cigale C11

Thailand » Phuket » Patong

With its stunning sea-view location in a luxury enclave and close access to many island attractions, we truly enjoyed the best of both worlds at Villa La Cigale. We relished the choice of spending our days in pampered elegance relaxing by the pool then going for a stroll along Patong's sands; or enjoying a night out on the town in the knowledge that it was only a short taxi ride back to our peaceful villa.

Though a chef and in-villa staff can be provided on request (extra charge), we were happy enough with the daily maid service and with the innovative Thai dishes we had delivered from the estate’s central kitchen. A virtual army of staff (45 in all) are employed to keep the estate in tip-top condition, and it really shows.

We did not bring our children along for this visit, but we think they would have had great fun swimming at the villa's pool, watching the big cable TV (with a cartoon channel) and venturing out to the shared children's pool nearby. Though there's plenty to keep everyone busy in nearby Patong, the management team can arrange yacht trips, rounds of golf and other excursions, as well as in-villa massages which, much to our dismay, we ran out of time to try.

L'Orchidee Residences - Villa Cattleya C8

L'Orchidee Residences - Villa Cattleya C8

Thailand » Phuket » Patong

This luxurious, well-managed villa set up in the hills overlooking Patong is one of the few holiday homes in Phuket that can truly claim to offer the best of both worlds. We could be at the busy beach resort town of Patong, delving into its myriad nightlife, dining and shopping choices within minutes – then escape back up into Villa Cattleya’s peaceful elegance with ease. We sunk in and stretched out in style, and our worries disappeared amid the superb level of comfort offered throughout, from the plush living room furnishings to the private bedrooms. We could see a real sense of care throughout, with high-quality craftsmanship in all the details including the wooden furnishings and the fresco-adorned wall along the pool. The shaded poolside terrace offers plenty of space to relax, though we felt it would benefit from having a larger dining table (the estate manager mentioned that new furniture was being ordered).

Though a chef and in-villa staff can be arranged for an extra charge, we opted for the à la carte menu served from the estate’s central kitchen. Meals were brought quickly and were superb, mainly Thai with some innovative flourishes.

Overall, there's something to satisfy everyone’s holiday requirements at Villa Cattleya C8, with space, calm, a family-friendly environment, a terrific range of services and facilities for entertaining in style, and easy access to a wealth of attractions for those seeking more adventure – be it a challenging round of golf or a night out on the town. Kids especially will love having the choice of playing at their own private pool or hanging out with other children at the large estate pool or the shallow children's pool at the clubhouse nearby.
