6-bedroom Villas in Bali, Indonesia

Bali is Indonesia’s most popular tourist location and is considered one of Asia's premier tropical island destinations. Steeped in history and renowned for its artistic way of life, Bali is a peaceful contrast to some of the more frantic destinations Asia has to offer.

The inner peace and creative talents of the Balinese has attracted artists the world over fascinated by local dancers, silversmiths, wood carvers, potters and painters that seem to pervade throughout the island. The abundant verdant fields and surrounding sea have long supplied Bali with an easy surplus of food leaving time for life’s more artistic past times. As a result everything in Bali has a creative and religious element centred around the local Banjar (residents association) – little, adorned temples are everywhere, doors are covered in intricate carvings, huge kites ward off evil spirits and colourful roadside ceremonies bring traffic to a standstill.

Bali is a popular destination principally from Australia and Asia but also from all over Europe. The island welcomes thousands of visitors each year to a relaxing lifestyle, stunning beaches, world class surf, vibrant villages, and spectacular scenery all with an exquisite tropical climate. Located approximately two hours’ flying time from Singapore the island is serviced by an international airport at Denpasar with direct flights to and from many major cities in Asia, Europe and Australia and many more via Jakarta, Indonesia’s capital.

The island offers an impressive range of leisure and lifestyle amenities including world-class golf courses, wonderful seascapes for surfing, diving and snorkelling as well as luxurious spas, chic boutiques, tropical forests, towering volcanoes and international cuisine.

Bayu Gita Beach Front

Bayu Gita Beach Front

Indonesia » Bali » East Coast » Ketewel

Our stay at Villa Bayu Gita was brilliant.  It’s as simple as that.  The comfort factor, the professionalism of the staff, the excellence of the food, the fantastic facilities and the gorgeous views all combined to create an exceptional villa experience.  There are not many villas in Bali that sit so close to the ocean that you can feel it in your face, literally.  During the highest tides, the sea comes right up to the base of the sea wall at the front of the villa and can create quite a show.

Entertainment wise the villa has a marvellous home cinema with recliner chairs and an 80-inch screen, a very well appointed gym and a billiard room, all downstairs in the basement where sound is not an issue.  Upstairs it’s all about the pool, the sun and the ocean views with lots of sun loungers on the pool terrace and sofas both inside and out.

The bedrooms are all very private, generously sized and comfortable so that you can really enjoy some downtime when you need it and guests lucky enough to draw straws for either of the two master suites can luxuriate in their own private plunge pools – the front one facing straight out to sea.

We thought that the villa would make a wonderful beachfront wedding venue – it can cater for up to 80 guests.  And an added bonus is that it can be rented in conjunction with the serene 3-bedroomed Bayu Gita Residence, just a few metres away.

Villa The Beji

Villa The Beji

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

Our stay at Villa The Beji was delightful.  The villa is incredibly well laid out, especially for families – it would make a smashing venue for two or three families to share.  All six bedrooms are fabulously spacious and have extravagant bathrooms, and the living areas are all strategically positioned for parents to keep a watchful eye on children.  There’s a huge amount to do at the villa itself – swimming pool, home theatre room, table tennis and gym, as well as a tennis and basketball court and a mini football pitch (the latter shared with the adjacent sister villa).  If that’s not enough, nearby is the beach and the Finns Recreation Club, which provides first class recreational and leisure facilities. Guests of Villa The Beji enjoys complimentary access to the exclusive Finns Recreation Club Guests for up to 6 guests daily.

The Beji’s staff were a real pleasure and made our stay very easy – the chef produced great food, the waiters and waitresses were discreetly attentive and the villa manager very keen to assist.  They made the villa particularly hard to leave when it was time to head home!

Kaba Kaba Estate

Kaba Kaba Estate

Indonesia » Bali » Tabanan

We’ve been lucky enough to visit a lot of beautiful villas in our time, but Kaba Kaba Estate exceeded all expectations of comfort, luxuriousness, good taste and space.  There’s so much to do on the estate itself that its out-of-town location is not an issue.  Everything has been thought of, from tennis, foosball, air hockey and all the major electronic game consoles, through to a library, gym and even a croquet lawn.  If only we’d had more time!  As it was, the pools, the spa and the spectacular home cinema were more than enough to relax and entertain us.

The staff were just the right mix of professional and friendly, and the chef is a consummate pro, delighting us with everything he presented.  Although there is a selection menu, we highly suggest that you just ‘go blind’ (like we did) and let the chef and his team surprise you with their magic.  Our simple, three-course Balinese dinner was off-the-charts delicious.

Do go for an early morning wander through the rice fields.  The locals are very friendly and the experience will be something the regular tour guides can’t give you.  The wide-open spaces are awe inspiring.

Villa Kailasha

Villa Kailasha

Indonesia » Bali » Tabanan

Guests booking Villa Kailasha will hopefully have spotted that it’s in a remote location so there should be no surprise on arrival: we certainly thought the villa’s setting was sublime. Long stretches of black sand and marauding surf with hardly another tourist in sight. We spent most of our time stretched out by the pool enjoying the ministrations of the staff and soaking up the ocean views, but while we were there we were privileged to witness a village ceremony when the procession passed right by the villa’s front gate. We followed the merriment and colour down to the beach and experienced a Balinese event that, for us, was priceless.

For a change of scenery, take a stroll along the small roads and into the local villages for a slice of rural life. And for something a little more sophisticated, stop by the Alila Villas Soori Resort for dinner, or at least a sunset drink. The classy surroundings are pretty special and being so remote not many people drop in, so don’t miss the opportunity while you’re in the neighbourhood. We went for the said sunset drink but ended up staying for dinner – and really rated their kitchen. While their spa would probably welcome visitors as well, it’s perhaps more tempting to ask the villa staff to organise a therapist to come and give you a treatment at ‘home’.

Villa Lilibel

Villa Lilibel

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

If you’re looking for a really central base in Seminyak, there are few villas better located than Villa Lilibel. Not only can you walk to the beach and a host of restaurants from here, but the villa is also well laid out, well staffed and brilliantly sized. Living areas are huge and very sociable, yet you can also find corners for peace and privacy if you so desire. The master bedroom was much larger than the other bedrooms and its bathroom easily the most decadent. We thought the other ensuites were perhaps a little dated and not so well lit.

And much as we might frown upon such unsocial holiday behaviour, this villa is a TV addict’s dream, with TVs in the main living room, media room (plus sets in all of the six bedrooms) - The three bedrooms off the villa’s entrance courtyard were the quietest and the ground floor rooms would be good for sleeping kids and elderly rellies. We liked the different dining options at the villa: the barbecue terrace is a very sociable venue for long balmy evenings spent dining, wining and chatting. The staff proudly told us that Villa Lilibel’s barbecued pork ribs are a bit of an institution. Unfortunately, we didn’t get the chance to try them on this visit!

There’s a reasonably priced menu at Lilibel and a choice of breakfast is included in the rate. The chances are that with so many great restaurants on your doorstep you’ll be eating out much of the time too. The staff were friendly and attentive; there was always someone around when we needed them and they were quick in preparing our meals and drinks. We were impressed with the kitchen too as it was so well-equipped. Keen cooks would be happy here, and all of the provisioning can be left to the staff.

Villa Luwih

Villa Luwih

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

With a double-pool cascade among its many splendours, Villa LuWih is one of the most welcoming and beautiful villas we’ve escaped to in a long while.  Arriving late at night in a slightly dishevelled state, we were quickly restored to a relaxed frame of mind after being met by LuWih’s fresh-faced, smiling team who had prepared our airport transfer service, rooms and snacks exactly as we’d arranged in advance.  The sights and sounds of the night also provide a restorative ambiance, with the villa’s top-floor pool trickling into the big pool below, its soothing lighting and the whooshing symphony of the sea beyond.

After a peaceful sleep in our canopied beds, we awoke and stepped out into a bedazzling scene.  The sparkling green landscape Bali is famous for was in full view all around us, and if we looked further in the distance we could see a serpent’s tail of movement in the sea – a group of surfers riding the waves.

With bedrooms spread evenly over the three levels and a mix of king- and twin-bedded rooms, a group of couples or extended families will find it easy to organise themselves.  Those wanting more seclusion may find the two main-floor bedrooms a bit lacking in privacy, with the doors opening out to the dining and living areas.  But this is a minor quibble, since with their own ensuite bathrooms complete with double bathtubs it’s easy enough to leave the world behind once the doors are slid shut and the curtains drawn.  And they’re both just a quick hop from the big pool.

Now, about these pools … Staying at a hotel with two pools is always impressive, but staying at a private villa with two pools is truly an indulgent delight.  It was a first for us, and we had no excuses for not doing our daily laps.  The shallow section for kids in the larger pool is a thoughtful touch, too.

With so many staff here, our only concern before arrival was having too many people around!  We were well taken care of, certainly, but never felt overwhelmed or over-serviced during our stay – they seem to have the balance of attention and discretion just right. Being pampered to the hilt is easy to get accustomed to.  LuWih, by the way, means “big” and “luxurious”. Leaving the villa was traumatic.

Villa Mandalay

Villa Mandalay

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Seseh-Tanah Lot

We’ve never seen a villa with its own pitch and putt golf range before and thought it was a tremendous addition for family fun or for allowing golfers to iron out glitches before parting with the huge green fees for the 18-hole course New Kuta Golf Club (34km).

We loved the fact that nearly all the rooms in the villa are on one level, making it very social, accessible and appropriate for all ages. And all of the bedrooms (with the exception of the lower studio room - which is slightly smaller - but very private) are very similar and won't be the cause of any group envy.

We lazed away the latter part of the day on comfy couches shaded by the funky bamboo roof of the elevated open-air living and dining deck by the pool. From here we observed the farmers ploughing and flooding the rice terraces in preparation for planting. The staff were diligently on hand with offers of snacks and drink refills to refresh us throughout these exhausting people-watching activities. At sunset we retired for a splendid Indonesian dinner in the main hall.

Pandawa Cliff Estate - Villa Marie

Pandawa Cliff Estate - Villa Marie

Indonesia » Bali » Jimbaran - Bukit » The Bukit

What a lovely villa for families with kids! This struck us as soon as we stepped onto Villa Marie’s ironwood sundeck framing the large swimming pool. Small kids will love the huge shallow section conveniently located alongside the living pavilion, and parents will appreciate being able to keep an eye on them from practically every room while blissing out on the ocean vistas and the privacy of two separate master bedroom pavilions on either side of the pool.

We think this would be a great villa for six couples too. In addition to the two master suites, the four equally large bedrooms in the two-storey sleeping block each enjoy privacy as well as a small deck or balcony and fabulous bathroom, and the two twin rooms can also be configured as kings; so no short straw to be drawn here! We did notice that neither of the two dining tables had enough room for 12 guests, but have a feeling the highly efficient management team will be onto that pretty speedily. The fabulous facilities of the adjoining Pandawa Cliff Estate sports centre and spa provides an alternative source of entertainment at your doorstep. Air-conditioned squash, anyone? Doubles tennis? (There’s even an umpire’s chair to keep the competitive spirit in check). And a five-minute drive in your complimentary car will take you to Pandawa Beach where you can swim, snorkel and kayak in the shallow, reef-protected waters.

Pandawa Cliff Estate - The Pala

Pandawa Cliff Estate - The Pala

Indonesia » Bali » Jimbaran - Bukit » The Bukit

The jaw-dropping ocean views and sheer amount of space make The Pala a party villa par excellence; hands down, it’s going to be am amazing wedding venue. We loved the choice of living spaces spilling out onto terraces and balconies on both levels – all with sublime sea views. And the master bedroom was quite astonishing – with what has to be one of the best views in Bali; ocean, beach, cliffs and the island of Nusa Penida looming on the horizon.

Six couples could holiday together in complete harmony (and sublime comfort) here, as there are lots of different spaces to get together as well as quiet corners to escape from the crowd. And while there might be some initial discussion over who gets the magnificent master bedroom, the five guestrooms are so spacious and comfortable that no one’s going to complain!  (Parents take note – the bursting-at-the-seams-with-toys playroom, media games room, and large shallow pool adjoining the main one make The Pala an excellent venue for multiple-family vacations too).

Pala is the Indonesian word for nutmeg – a spice once so coveted that countries crossed oceans and went to war for it. What an apposite name for a delicious villa that will surely spice up any vacation.

Villa Puri Nirwana

Villa Puri Nirwana

Indonesia » Bali » East Coast » Ketewel

Six years on from the original review, we enjoyed a delightful stay at Puri Nirwana. It was a pleasure to find such a quiet part of Bali’s coast completely untouched by the crowds, even in high season. The location is spectacular, and the views from the villa attention-grabbing throughout the day.

We had the beach to ourselves apart from a lone fisherman, and enjoyed walking along the beach-front promenade, to Pura Masceti, one of Bali’s nine sacred directional temples. The sunrises over Cucukan Beach are sensational, and we were mesmerised by the island and mountain views.

The villa is large and the staff are very friendly, full of smiles; the chef, who had worked at Ubud culinary icon Mosaic, prepared some beautifully presented meals for us. Puri Nirwana is well designed to accommodate large family groups — it is possibly the best place on Bali to bring someone with mobility issues — and the stunning spa pavilion is the perfect spot to enjoy a leisurely massage.
