7-bedroom Villas in Bali, Indonesia

Bali is Indonesia’s most popular tourist location and is considered one of Asia's premier tropical island destinations. Steeped in history and renowned for its artistic way of life, Bali is a peaceful contrast to some of the more frantic destinations Asia has to offer.

The inner peace and creative talents of the Balinese has attracted artists the world over fascinated by local dancers, silversmiths, wood carvers, potters and painters that seem to pervade throughout the island. The abundant verdant fields and surrounding sea have long supplied Bali with an easy surplus of food leaving time for life’s more artistic past times. As a result everything in Bali has a creative and religious element centred around the local Banjar (residents association) – little, adorned temples are everywhere, doors are covered in intricate carvings, huge kites ward off evil spirits and colourful roadside ceremonies bring traffic to a standstill.

Bali is a popular destination principally from Australia and Asia but also from all over Europe. The island welcomes thousands of visitors each year to a relaxing lifestyle, stunning beaches, world class surf, vibrant villages, and spectacular scenery all with an exquisite tropical climate. Located approximately two hours’ flying time from Singapore the island is serviced by an international airport at Denpasar with direct flights to and from many major cities in Asia, Europe and Australia and many more via Jakarta, Indonesia’s capital.

The island offers an impressive range of leisure and lifestyle amenities including world-class golf courses, wonderful seascapes for surfing, diving and snorkelling as well as luxurious spas, chic boutiques, tropical forests, towering volcanoes and international cuisine.

Villa Kailasha

Villa Kailasha

Indonesia » Bali » Tabanan

Guests booking Villa Kailasha will hopefully have spotted that it’s in a remote location so there should be no surprise on arrival: we certainly thought the villa’s setting was sublime. Long stretches of black sand and marauding surf with hardly another tourist in sight. We spent most of our time stretched out by the pool enjoying the ministrations of the staff and soaking up the ocean views, but while we were there we were privileged to witness a village ceremony when the procession passed right by the villa’s front gate. We followed the merriment and colour down to the beach and experienced a Balinese event that, for us, was priceless.

For a change of scenery, take a stroll along the small roads and into the local villages for a slice of rural life. And for something a little more sophisticated, stop by the Alila Villas Soori Resort for dinner, or at least a sunset drink. The classy surroundings are pretty special and being so remote not many people drop in, so don’t miss the opportunity while you’re in the neighbourhood. We went for the said sunset drink but ended up staying for dinner – and really rated their kitchen. While their spa would probably welcome visitors as well, it’s perhaps more tempting to ask the villa staff to organise a therapist to come and give you a treatment at ‘home’.

Villa Mana

Villa Mana

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

We absolutely loved Villa Mana. Not only were the views amazing, its openness liberating and the design super-chic – an architectural dream – but it was also very comfortable, with so many places to lie back and relax, even when the villa is full. Sofas and loungers seemed supersized, and were the perfect accompaniments to sleeping and reading or languidly watching the farmers hard at work in their paddy fields.

We enjoyed bathing in the master bathroom with its glass roof, river-stone walls and smooth circular tub that’s big enough for two. We felt the villa was excellently set up for the extended family, large groups or even a couple of families (but do note that using the showers in the ground floor ensuites involves climbing into the tubs, which might not be ideal for some elderly guests).

The twin bedroom and bunk bedroom are both conveniently located opposite the entertainment room, which is a big self-contained space with comfortable sofas that could be used as much as a playroom (there’s a box full of toys plus a pool table) as a home cinema room (plenty of DVDs supplied). Sliding doors open from here and lead onto the enclosed rear garden, where there’s a meandering 2-feet deep pool that can be enjoyed by little paddlers.

The lawn at the bottom of the garden is encircled by paddy fields and felt like the stage of a Shakespearean theatre. The garden is enclosed (parents sigh of relief), and kids will just love it here. Villa Mana's staff aim to please, and they succeed. The chef is excellent and the manager is efficient and knowledgeable. With the kitchen being at the centre of the villa, we were always aware of the staff and felt that total privacy was slightly compromised (at least on the ground floor).

Villa Mandalay

Villa Mandalay

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Seseh-Tanah Lot

We’ve never seen a villa with its own pitch and putt golf range before and thought it was a tremendous addition for family fun or for allowing golfers to iron out glitches before parting with the huge green fees for the 18-hole course New Kuta Golf Club (34km).

We loved the fact that nearly all the rooms in the villa are on one level, making it very social, accessible and appropriate for all ages. And all of the bedrooms (with the exception of the lower studio room - which is slightly smaller - but very private) are very similar and won't be the cause of any group envy.

We lazed away the latter part of the day on comfy couches shaded by the funky bamboo roof of the elevated open-air living and dining deck by the pool. From here we observed the farmers ploughing and flooding the rice terraces in preparation for planting. The staff were diligently on hand with offers of snacks and drink refills to refresh us throughout these exhausting people-watching activities. At sunset we retired for a splendid Indonesian dinner in the main hall.

Taman Ahimsa

Taman Ahimsa

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Seseh-Tanah Lot

If you’re looking for nightlife and shopping, Taman Ahimsa is probably not the villa for you, but if you want to retreat from the world, awaken your soul, practice yoga and meditation, eat healthy food and experience therapeutic massages, this transformative place will inspire you more than you ever imagined possible. Even if you’re not really into the spiritual concept, and you don’t understand much about chakras, mandala thankas, crystals and healing circles, you will still appreciate the beautiful close-to-nature setting, the sight and sound of the sea, the romantic architecture and the peaceful ambiance.

Although the villa promotes the holistic concept, you don’t have to be on a spiritual retreat to come here; but who knows, you might just be inspired to experience something new. The gardens and interiors are fun to explore too, in every room we found a traditional Balinese instrument, an extraordinary crystal or an antique, or a funky lamp or table. Floors and doors are made from old teak, ironwood and two-toned tamarind wood, which has been recycled from boats and old buildings. Please note the villa has a no smoking policy.

Taman Ahimsa is managed by Fivelements, a company that specialises in holistic healing retreats, centred at Puri Ahimsa, 20km away. For a truly amazing experience arrange for the villa’s driver to take you to Fivelements Puri Ahimsa for a holistic treatment performed by an authentic Balinese healer.

Villa Atas Awan

Villa Atas Awan

Indonesia » Bali » Ubud

The calm and peaceful surroundings at Villa Atas Awan immediately put us at ease. Due to its remote location, the only sounds constantly present come from nature. It gave us the feeling of no-frills rural living, but with the benefit of modern comforts such as soft beds and private swimming pool. Creative types who draw inspiration from nature will love it here. It’s also ideal for a holistic or yoga retreat as the air is crisp, fresh and unpolluted.

As the property has not been childproofed and presents quite a few hazards for youngsters, it is more suited for families with older kids. That said, those who are not interested in nature or cultural exchanges with the locals may become bored quickly due to the absence of video game consoles or televisions in the living areas and guest bedrooms. Those who have difficulty with stairs may have difficulty as there are no sleeping quarters on the ground floor.

The villa opened for rental only in early 2010 but some maintenance issues were already apparent when we visited (such as a faulty telephone line). However, we were assured that everything was being repaired and looked in to.

Villa Bukit Naga

Villa Bukit Naga

Indonesia » Bali » Ubud

Villa Bukit Naga is one of the most delightful villas we have seen in Bali. The architect and owners have created a real gem in total sympathy with the surroundings. Tucked away overlooking a quiet river valley some 20-minutes’ drive from Ubud, the location is nothing short of spectacular. Spread over three buildings the rooms are all superb – we particularly liked the annex room with its cute garden bathroom and private little terrace. The plunge pool attched to the visitors lodge is also very special. Every room has been beautifully thought out with nice touches but it is not a delicate museum, so families with kids need not feel on edge. The staff are also outstanding, many having worked at the villa since it opened in 2002. We found Parta, the Villa Manager, a genuine delight who could not have been more helpful. Highly recommended as much for those looking for a dignified place for a pampered celebration, as for a yoga or health retreat or an extended family holiday in a fabulous location.

Bulan Putih

Bulan Putih

Indonesia » Bali » Jimbaran - Bukit » The Bukit

Villa Bulan Putih is a great place to get hitched! The grounds are the perfect size and the ocean backdrop will live on in photos forever.

And those views! Since the villa faces north east, the ocean doesn’t turn inky black come night-time but instead takes in the twinkling lights and energy of southern Bali in a broad arc. On clear mornings, the mountains that form Bali’s backbone fill the horizon, while the crashing waves of nearby Bingin Beach can be heard 24/7. The views get even better from the first- and second-floor balconies; a quick glance from here in the early mornings will ascertain whether or not the waves are worth getting out of bed for.

Having seven bedrooms provides a lot of space for family and friends, and there’s even up to four extra beds and a TV room that can be converted to a bedroom for any overflow. Kids will love the size of the villa grounds, where they can run around to their hearts’ content. The staff are a real treat and never missed a beat.

Bungadesa Villas (7BR + 3)

Bungadesa Villas (7BR + 3)

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

This little enclave across the river from Batubelig beach is as peaceful and quiet as the day is long.  All we could hear at night was the sound of the rolling surf through the open windows. And the early morning view  -  from the bed in the master suite  -  over the pink-capped waves of the Indian Ocean was inspiration… at its very best!

The gardens at Bungadesa are huge and filled with soft lawns, flowering tropical plants, fruit trees (you’ve got to taste the homegrown passion fruit) and a wonderful mix of Indonesian architecture and indigenous statues. This place catches the sun and the cooling sea breezes in equal parts making for perfect sunbathing conditions beside either of the two pools.

Make sure you take the time to nip down the local lagoon-side restaurant on your way back from the beach. It’s charming and rustic and, as well as a great menu of holiday favourites, can rustle up a half-decent pizza in a flash... and the beer is always icy cold. The villa staff were great  -  funny, sassy, chatty when needed and gone like the wind when we wanted to be alone. A sweet touch was a gift for the ladies, while Nana’s home-cooking proved to be superb, especially her seafood curry.

Villa Infinity

Villa Infinity

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

The beauty of this villa is the size, (and of course the views). Everything about it is huge and it is totally geared up for large groups of people, weddings and parties, with an extensive sound system (complete with hidden speakers that extend through the garden) and a highly professional kitchen with five-star cuisine prepared by two chefs. The U-shaped sofa in the living pavilion can accommodate 22 people, while the dormitory can accommodate 12 kids or, alternatively, the same number of adult guests who need to bunk down for the night. Note: although this room is not really suitable for adults, guests at events and weddings can sleep here for an additional fee. There were just two of us staying at Infinity, so we felt a bit lost lazing by the large pool all by ourselves. Still, it is a beautiful sprawling expanse of lawn and beautiful architecture so we got over that concern pretty quickly and got into the sheer amount of space available to us by imagining the stellar events that must take place here. An early morning swim is a must, especially as the pool is the warmest we have encountered. Mornings at Infinity are also a time of spectacular beauty with birds singing and crickets chirping; you can see the volcanic backbone of Bali on the horizon and watch the farmers out in their fields tending their crops. Just stunning!

Villa The Sanctuary

Villa The Sanctuary

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

If you imagine Bali purely as a sun, surf and sand-between-the-toes holiday destination, then The Sanctuary will give you a whole new perspective on this Island of the Gods. The Sanctuary is jungle, river, tall trees with buttressed roots: what marketing and advertising people describe as charming, heartfelt, grand, traditional, rural, and the very essence of old Bali. It really is a stunner of a villa, a real stunner. It’s so stunning we have to say it more than once.

The size of the place is beyond belief. Three hectares of river and jungle land with eight queen- and king-size beds and a bunkhouse for 20 youngsters, The Sanctuary is something that would suit very large extended families with hordes of kids. It only follows that weddings here would be stupendous with all that immaculate lawn space and the abundance of natural surroundings.

Our group of four could hardly take it all in, so after a quick look round we pretty swiftly decamped to the swimming pool terrace and billiard room where we spent the afternoon eating, drinking, pooling (wet and dry), and marvelling at the wildlife. We had one of the standard bedrooms (and by standard I mean pretty big and posh) and our friends lucked into the self-contained villa, which had its own pool and a massive bedroom with views right down onto the river gorge – a very wise choice, and one we were too slow to make. Still, with the distance between us, we were able to sing in the shower at the tops of our voices without the worry of judgement.
