Baan Paa Talee Estate

Baan Paa Talee Estate

Thailand » Phuket » Kamala

We've seen some villas in our time, but Baan Paa Talee Estate took our breath away.  The quality and scale of the villa; the wild beauty of its surroundings; the vast ocean panoramas from almost every room; the warm welcome from the exceptional staff and the creativity of the villa's skilled chef are all in a class of their own.  We were particularly happy to learn all about the villa and the surrounding area from the villa’s knowledgeable, guest-relations manager, who made our stay even more special.

Although Baan Paa Talee is spread across four levels of accommodation, we found ourselves drawn to two special spots: the reception lounge on the 'top deck' - so beautiful at sunset – was the obvious choice for evening cocktails before moving into the glass-enshrined dining room for another memorable dinner; and the whole pool area, which worked brilliantly with its options for lazing, swimming, soaking in the jacuzzi, enjoying a game of pool in the bar area, or cooling off in the media room with a favourite movie.

The bedrooms are really well arranged, offering total privacy if you want it (especially in the Ocean Villa), or flexibility for families in adjoining suites.  All are beautifully fitted and furnished and very comfortable.  Our stay was perfect and we can only hope we get a chance to return.

Villa Kailasha

Villa Kailasha

Indonesia » Bali » Tabanan

Guests booking Villa Kailasha will hopefully have spotted that it’s in a remote location so there should be no surprise on arrival: we certainly thought the villa’s setting was sublime. Long stretches of black sand and marauding surf with hardly another tourist in sight. We spent most of our time stretched out by the pool enjoying the ministrations of the staff and soaking up the ocean views, but while we were there we were privileged to witness a village ceremony when the procession passed right by the villa’s front gate. We followed the merriment and colour down to the beach and experienced a Balinese event that, for us, was priceless.

For a change of scenery, take a stroll along the small roads and into the local villages for a slice of rural life. And for something a little more sophisticated, stop by the Alila Villas Soori Resort for dinner, or at least a sunset drink. The classy surroundings are pretty special and being so remote not many people drop in, so don’t miss the opportunity while you’re in the neighbourhood. We went for the said sunset drink but ended up staying for dinner – and really rated their kitchen. While their spa would probably welcome visitors as well, it’s perhaps more tempting to ask the villa staff to organise a therapist to come and give you a treatment at ‘home’.

Villa Kalyana

Villa Kalyana

Thailand » Koh Samui » Laem Sor

A villa with the ambiance and amenities of an exclusive private-island-hotel, but one where guests have the luxury of dictating their own schedule and choosing who they share precious holiday time with. This was the impression we took away with us following our recent stay at Villa Kalyana.

Whether you want a tropical holiday retreat for family and friends, an exclusive executive escape, a dream wedding venue or space for some other special celebration, Villa Kalyana fits the bill.  With nine privately positioned and thoughtfully appointed guestrooms (five with romantic garden bathrooms) plus a kids bunk room, and an abundance of cool communal areas, both outside and in – including a dining room fit for a banquet (and a kitchen to cater for one), a games room for the gents, movie room for the kids and poolside lounge for the ladies – options for fun and relaxation are seemingly endless.

The villa’s quiet beachside location on Samui’s southernmost tip may not suit the clubbing crowd whose idea of the perfect holiday is to be out on the town every night, but it’s ideal for large group gatherings who enjoy their own company. There’s little need for nightlife, restaurants, shops and other amusements at this self-contained villa where a team of willing staff are on hand to look after you; there’s an impressive selection of gizmos gadgets and games for entertainment, and friends and family provide all the company you could wish for. The huge (chemical-free) swimming pool, vast gardens and virtually private beachfront make Kalyana a great choice for families with energetic children too.

Kalyana only opened to guests mid 2012 and with a few finishing touches, including a more confident and polished dining service, we feel sure that it will soon rank easily among the best private luxury villa experiences on the island.

Sri Villas

Sri Villas

Sri Lanka » West Coast » Bentota

This is definitely Sri Lanka’s best choice for large groups and for entertaining as the property has been designed so well for big parties. The genial setup means that villas are placed at just the right distance from each other to allow for conviviality whilst their individual self-containment means that family units within a group can still enjoy a degree of privacy if they need to. Sharing one big swimming pool between the three villas works out better than having three smaller pools, allowing for lengthy swims. There’s a shallow section in front of Nisala that you access directly from the villa’s terrace, making it a focus for families and therefore the busiest area of the pool. Verandas and balconies offer quiet spots for individual moments if you need to get away from the crowd. We found the staff team to be very able; the food was good (there was lots of choice), the smiles genuine and their experienced system of dealing with guests shone through. I liked that fresh juices were left in the fridge for us to help ourselves to (or brought to us in chilled glasses) and that we could order whatever we liked, when we liked. Typically guests choose to pay their food bills via a grocery system (staff doing the shopping and presenting you with receipts), which we did; however you could otherwise opt to pay $40 per person per day for full-board.

The Tamarind

The Tamarind

Thailand » Pattaya » Sattahip District

As soon as we were whisked away from Bangkok airport by the villa driver on our two-hour journey to The Tamarind, we knew we were in good hands. Turning into the flamboyant tree-lined driveway of the Buraran Estate we totally got into the privacy vibe of the place and relished the fact that this enormous empty estate was virtually all ours.

Dining was an absolute treat and we looked forward to each meal like lions at the only watering hole for miles. The staff, being Thai, certainly know how to cook this (in our opinion) most tantalising cuisine the world has ever seen. That said, they still throw together a mean pasta, and an even better English breakfast, and will serve it up anywhere you like. We breakfasted by the pool, lunched by the lake and ate nibbles and sipped champagne on the rooftop Sunset lounge.

Each bedroom is a themed adventure to another country, and together they have been designed to cater to all combinations and permutations of guests. We slept in the Africa room, surrounded by leopard prints and animal skins which made us feel like we were on safari. We were lucky enough to spend four days here and were never at a loss for things to do. We swam in the pool, went for walks around the estate, played tennis, billiards and petanque and spent many hours reading, watching the huge TV, eating or just being horizontal in the myriad places provided for just such a position.

The villa driver is on call for 10 hours a day (at a very reasonable charge) so do take advantage of the service to get out and see the local area. We had a great time sightseeing, including an outing to observe some of the infamous ‘netherworld’ tourism that Thailand is famous for.

Note: Guests at The Tamarind can also use the facilities of the adjacent Buraran Clubhouse (unless already occupied) with its two tennis courts, 16 x 9.5m swimming pool, additional 9m kids’ pool, and seminar room with drop-down screen projector and WiFi. There are six bedrooms here, which can be rented by the room to accommodate any overflow of guests at The Tamarind, up to a total of 12.
