Bali is Indonesia’s most popular tourist location and is considered one of Asia's premier tropical island destinations. Steeped in history and renowned for its artistic way of life, Bali is a peaceful contrast to some of the more frantic destinations Asia has to offer.
The inner peace and creative talents of the Balinese has attracted artists the world over fascinated by local dancers, silversmiths, wood carvers, potters and painters that seem to pervade throughout the island. The abundant verdant fields and surrounding sea have long supplied Bali with an easy surplus of food leaving time for life’s more artistic past times. As a result everything in Bali has a creative and religious element centred around the local Banjar (residents association) – little, adorned temples are everywhere, doors are covered in intricate carvings, huge kites ward off evil spirits and colourful roadside ceremonies bring traffic to a standstill.
Bali is a popular destination principally from Australia and Asia but also from all over Europe. The island welcomes thousands of visitors each year to a relaxing lifestyle, stunning beaches, world class surf, vibrant villages, and spectacular scenery all with an exquisite tropical climate. Located approximately two hours’ flying time from Singapore the island is serviced by an international airport at Denpasar with direct flights to and from many major cities in Asia, Europe and Australia and many more via Jakarta, Indonesia’s capital.
The island offers an impressive range of leisure and lifestyle amenities including world-class golf courses, wonderful seascapes for surfing, diving and snorkelling as well as luxurious spas, chic boutiques, tropical forests, towering volcanoes and international cuisine.

The atmosphere is one of pure tropical languor, easily indulged while sinking into a sea of cushions, sprawling on a sofa or lounging in a poolside deck chair. Service is relaxed – more of the ‘ask for’ rather than ’anticipated’ style – which suited us, but may not be ideal for those who like to be waited on hand and foot. When we managed to tear our eyes away from the scenery, we worked our way through the plethora of books, magazines, CDs and games, lamenting the fact that we didn’t have time for everything. We were happy to switch off, but the fast internet connection, good mobile reception and fax machine are handy for those who need to stay in touch with the outside world, which – despite the rural setting – isn’t actually that far away.

After nipping out for a coffee at French-style Café Moka (great pastries – just a shame we were too full from our big in-villa breakfast) we came back to the villa and simply hung out by the pool. The semi-outdoor massage studio will get a lot of use so make sure you work out your roster beforehand to keep squabbling to a minimum. The local masseur, Budhi, could give any shaman out of ‘Eat, Pray, Love’ a run for his money so take advantage when you can. Female therapists are also available for a more gentle massage if required.
Although the villa sleeps eight, we thought that might put a bit of a strain on resources and space so would recommend it more for a family or smaller group of singles.

Despite the remoteness of the area (or is that because of it?) there are many adventure activities to be had and experienced: snorkelling for the laid back, scuba diving for the more intense, mountain climbing, mountain biking, nature trekking, kayaking, bird watching and all round general rural exploration, which always turns up a few unexpected goodies such as stumbling across a Hindu village ceremony or witnessing fishermen bringing in their catch at dusk. Alternatively, like us, you can just do nothing and lie beside the pool and read books, drink beer and watch the gardeners cutting the grass.
The staff are all from the local village and haven’t wasted time in tourism school learning how to unfold starched white linen napkins in your lap - that’s not what this part of Bali is about. But even so, expect great tasting Western and Indonesian dishes, honest service, smiles and a glorious welcome.
