Villas in Bali, Indonesia

Bali is Indonesia’s most popular tourist location and is considered one of Asia's premier tropical island destinations. Steeped in history and renowned for its artistic way of life, Bali is a peaceful contrast to some of the more frantic destinations Asia has to offer.

The inner peace and creative talents of the Balinese has attracted artists the world over fascinated by local dancers, silversmiths, wood carvers, potters and painters that seem to pervade throughout the island. The abundant verdant fields and surrounding sea have long supplied Bali with an easy surplus of food leaving time for life’s more artistic past times. As a result everything in Bali has a creative and religious element centred around the local Banjar (residents association) – little, adorned temples are everywhere, doors are covered in intricate carvings, huge kites ward off evil spirits and colourful roadside ceremonies bring traffic to a standstill.

Bali is a popular destination principally from Australia and Asia but also from all over Europe. The island welcomes thousands of visitors each year to a relaxing lifestyle, stunning beaches, world class surf, vibrant villages, and spectacular scenery all with an exquisite tropical climate. Located approximately two hours’ flying time from Singapore the island is serviced by an international airport at Denpasar with direct flights to and from many major cities in Asia, Europe and Australia and many more via Jakarta, Indonesia’s capital.

The island offers an impressive range of leisure and lifestyle amenities including world-class golf courses, wonderful seascapes for surfing, diving and snorkelling as well as luxurious spas, chic boutiques, tropical forests, towering volcanoes and international cuisine.

Villa Phinisi

Villa Phinisi

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

Phinisi is a great villa in a great spot! We loved the use of the recycled boat timber, which added a unique dimension to this modern villa. It was obvious that the owner had chosen each piece very carefully.

Given its central location, the villa really is a hidden oasis. The lagoon-style pool is one of the most inviting we have seen, and lounging on the sunbeds under the traditional Balinese umbrellas or getting pampered in the massage room was the ultimate in relaxation.

With the beach, shops, bars and restaurants right at our fingertips there was no shortage of entertainment options, but having meals prepared in the privacy of the villa when we wanted and getting together to watch a movie on the projector screen in the sunken living area took a lot of beating!

Pure Villa

Pure Villa

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

We felt like royalty staying at Pure Villa. The staff were exceptional, not only in taking care of our every whim but also in creating moods to suit the moment. The sheer white elegance of the villa became a canvas for mood lighting at night; tall silver candle holders placed by the staff along the length of the veranda added a warm glow to the evening and lights in the pool turned the water fluorescent with a rainbow of colors. A Bose speaker system installed at every corner of the property meant yoga on the lawn (mats provided), walks around the estate, massages and swimming were all enjoyed with a soundtrack to suit, and the villa iPod was loaded with all the genres we could ask for. With little light pollution, the night sky was amazing, and from the master bedroom we could watch the stars and the sunrise from the comfort of our bed; hello luxury!

With the in-house chef having exceptional skills in the preparation of Indonesian and Western food, we didn’t look much further than the villa for our meals; and all at only the cost of the shopping plus a 20% service charge. When we did venture out to discover the local sights, having two cars and two drivers on hand (8 hours per day inclusive of cost, petrol extra), and who knew the area so well, made things very easy.

Puri Naga Toya

Puri Naga Toya

Indonesia » Bali » Ubud

Breathtaking! Bewitching! Beyond compare! We were captivated by Villa Puri Naga Toya’s extraordinary views, and found the place so intoxicating we were reluctant to explore beyond the (beautiful) villa gardens! We loved its colonial plantation-style, hill station feel, and considered ourselves quite privileged to be staying in this much loved family home surrounded by such a wealth of antiques and art. The master bedroom is a tour de force, and its terrace-with-a-view was a favourite spot (though the decadence of the antique opium bed in the living room was a close contender). With such stupendous views beyond the windows and valuable antiques within, it’s hard to concentrate on anything else; but just wait ‘til you see the library with its fascinating collection of books on Southeast Asia!

It was Bali’s cooler season when we stayed, so we took a light wrap to take the edge off the evening chill, and used it as an excuse to enjoy the comfort of the coal-effect fire. The housekeepers cooked up a creditable pasta dish for dinner, and served a delicious breakfast in a dining area with the most stylish chairs.

This truly is a place to retreat to when you want a break from the hurley burley of corporate life. Though we were only two people, we didn’t feel out of place; it still works as a couple’s retreat, which is unusual in a four-bedroom villa. So we can imagine this working well as an artist’s or writer’s getaway, suiting couples kindling sparks of romance, and also proving popular with families. The steep steps to the octagonal bedroom (and the lack of an ensuite bathroom) may put off older family members, but will provide a sense of adventure to teens, as will the Bamboo House in a separate part of the garden. Because of the dramatic and unguarded drop-off to the Ayung river valley, we would counsel caution in bringing young children unless you’re prepared to watch them carefully (and many of the artefacts are within easy reach of toddlers’ hands). Having said that, the guests before us brought two kids under the age of four and they all loved the place.

The Purist - River Residence

The Purist - River Residence

Indonesia » Bali » Ubud

Although River Residence is part of a complex of villas, complete with a spa, it felt very private and surprisingly spacious - especially when you consider that it hasn’t got its own pool or garden. The balconies not only overhang the river valley but also seem to draw the outdoors inside. This is a close-to-nature experience; you will awake to the dawn chorus, be serenaded during the day by cicadas and fall asleep to the sound of the frogs. The shared 12m infinity swimming pool is situated beside the river valley and bordered by a large timber deck, furnished with sunbeds. There’s plenty of room here and it’s a nice place for breakfast and lunch. The food is excellent, with an international à la carte menu and lots of healthy choices. The on-site spa is a delight, complete with a double treatment room, romantic bathtub for two, a manicure and pedicure room, and an open-sided upstairs yoga platform. Treatments in the spa are at extra cost. Upon our return, three years after our original review, we were delighted to see that the property has been immaculately maintained. The Purist was very new on our first visit but is now well established as a boutique villa-hotel and spa, with plans to increase its number of villas in the near future.

Villa Putih Semer

Villa Putih Semer

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Umalas-Kerobokan

What we loved about Villa Putih Semer were the gorgeously chic interiors, which are of the ilk that you would expect to find featured in a classy interior design magazine. The owners are passionate about food, wine, music and books, and have made this the concept of their home. The cook showcased her skills by preparing her specialty, seafood curry, which proved to be fantastic. This sophisticated villa is a rural oasis on the edge of town, where we were able to totally relax and unwind within a beautiful, natural setting with a sneaky rice field view fringed by a small river, jungle vegetation and a bamboo thicket. The villa is so peaceful, so quiet, and so private. The car and driver (included in villa rate) is a great bonus, but we found it very hard to leave the premises. There are also some simple spas in the neighbourhood but, again, for those not wanting to venture out, staff can easily arrange for massages and spa treatments administered by professional therapists (on guest account) – to be carried out on the villa’s own massage bed.

Villa Reina

Villa Reina

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Umalas-Kerobokan

We enjoyed our time at Villa Reina just chilling beside the pool and absorbing the lush garden surroundings, and we loved the incredibly private atmosphere and the convivial design of the huge living room. Despite the villa’s dusky black and purple decor, its open layout allowed the light to pour in, and in the bedrooms, these contemporary shades were softened by woollen crochet bedspreads, matching cushions and long white curtains. The ensuite bathrooms, even with their glamorous silver sinks, felt beautifully natural and Balinese.

The villa would make a wonderful hideaway for sunseeking groups of friends (as long as fights don’t break out over who gets the master suite!), and it’s a particularly good set up for a family with a couple of older kids. The master suite has a particularly great bathroom, and pamperpusses will adore the oversized moulded stone tub that’s placed just beside sliding doors onto a river-view terrace. This bathroom also makes a great spot for enjoying a massage, and a quick phone call to BaliEpicure is all that’s needed for masseurs to head your way, massage table in tow. We tried it and loved every second – it was all so easy to arrange.

The villa comes with a husband and wife staff team who look after the house and garden, as well as a night security guard. The first breakfast is included in the rate, and after this all other meals are costed according to the price of the groceries. The maid can prepare western breakfasts and simple Indonesian cuisine for lunch and dinner, and she can do the shopping on your behalf if you furnish her with some cash and a list. She works until 5pm and prepared dinner for us before she left for the day. We liked this system as it gave us plenty of privacy in the house in the evening. The kitchen is also well equipped for self-caterers, and a selection of menus (including BaliEpicure) are available for home delivery.

Villa Ria Sayan

Villa Ria Sayan

Indonesia » Bali » Ubud

Wow…the view from Villa Ria Sayan eclipses that from the Four Seasons and Amandari! How on earth did the owner of this delightfully cosy (but by no means small) villa manage to snap up such a fantastic ravine-edge spot in Bali’s most coveted location? We were told that ‘ria’ means ‘happy’ in Indonesian…and that’s quite an understatement for our response to this hidden gem; even the unseasonal rain that accompanied our stay couldn’t dampen our enthusiasm. This is a lovely, comfortable home full of fascinating furniture and artefacts that each have a story to tell of the owner’s travels and love of Bali… such a delightful contrast to those holiday rental villas that mask an owner’s personality with an interior designer’s heavy-handed influence. Our favourite place was the upstairs ‘study’ where the best vista in Bali was welcome distraction from my computer. And even the tropical downpour couldn’t keep us from the poolside balé perched at the edge of the ridge, from where we could hear the rush of the Ayung river a hundred metres below.

We found the staff warm and friendly – Nengah’s home cooking garners enthusiastic compliments in the guest book – but also appreciated having the place to ourselves a lot of the time.

Rumah Lotus

Rumah Lotus

Indonesia » Bali » Ubud

Arriving at Villa Rumah Lotus at night, we immediately eased into its sense of space and peacefulness. There wasn’t a single light on the horizon to suggest another living being nearby, though we were soothed by the sound of the gamelan wafting in the breeze from the village of Kelusa out of sight across the valley.

Emerging from a blissful night’s sleep in our supremely comfortable four-poster bed the next morning, we were delighted to discover the breathtaking views ... nothing but rice fields and, distant mountains! After an excellent breakfast, we enjoyed lazing by the large pool, glimpsing the occasional farmer tending his crop and trying not to feel guilty as we reclined in the balé, waited on hand and foot. Wayan the villa manager was charming and made sure we were well looked after; he speaks several languages (English, French, Japanese among them), is very knowledgeable about the area, and attentive to small details. We appreciated the Nespresso coffee machine and choice of Twinings teas offered during the day, as well as thoughtful extras like kimonos and slippers in the bedroom.

We felt we were far from the madding crowd and yet, if we wanted the bright(er) lights, we could be in Ubud within 20 minutes! And though it was tempting to try out the many restaurants in Bali’s culture capital – which include Mozaic, voted Asia’s top restaurant – Yanti’s home cooking was enough to keep us from straying far; she prepared a beautiful seafood barbecue in the evening. And it helps that the villa wine list is extensive, courtesy of another notable Ubud restaurant, Bridges.
