Villas in Bali, Indonesia

Bali is Indonesia’s most popular tourist location and is considered one of Asia's premier tropical island destinations. Steeped in history and renowned for its artistic way of life, Bali is a peaceful contrast to some of the more frantic destinations Asia has to offer.

The inner peace and creative talents of the Balinese has attracted artists the world over fascinated by local dancers, silversmiths, wood carvers, potters and painters that seem to pervade throughout the island. The abundant verdant fields and surrounding sea have long supplied Bali with an easy surplus of food leaving time for life’s more artistic past times. As a result everything in Bali has a creative and religious element centred around the local Banjar (residents association) – little, adorned temples are everywhere, doors are covered in intricate carvings, huge kites ward off evil spirits and colourful roadside ceremonies bring traffic to a standstill.

Bali is a popular destination principally from Australia and Asia but also from all over Europe. The island welcomes thousands of visitors each year to a relaxing lifestyle, stunning beaches, world class surf, vibrant villages, and spectacular scenery all with an exquisite tropical climate. Located approximately two hours’ flying time from Singapore the island is serviced by an international airport at Denpasar with direct flights to and from many major cities in Asia, Europe and Australia and many more via Jakarta, Indonesia’s capital.

The island offers an impressive range of leisure and lifestyle amenities including world-class golf courses, wonderful seascapes for surfing, diving and snorkelling as well as luxurious spas, chic boutiques, tropical forests, towering volcanoes and international cuisine.

Villa Tukad Pangi

Villa Tukad Pangi

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

This villa is chic and contemporary in style, whilst also oozing Balinese charm in its design and landscaping – the best of both worlds. The owner has obviously brought in top architects, landscape and interior designers to help realise his dream. The riverside location is enchanting, perhaps a little out of the way for some but well worth the extra few minutes travel time.

Villa Tukad Pangi is very private and peaceful and perfect for a retreat – both romantic or for a small group. The villa is a great base for families with older children, but it’s not ideal for the very young as there are no railings separating the veranda from a drop to the riverside. It is not perfect for seniors either as the pools could be difficult to get in and out of, and there are several steps down to the lower level.

There are plenty of spots to relax, read a book or watch a movie, so groups would not get on top of each other when the villa is at full capacity. It’s a fabulous place for a cocktail or dinner party with the pools and garden lit up romantically at night. The kitchen is fit to cater for a banquet … and the chef will happily oblige. We enjoyed some excellent meals at Villa Tukad Pangi and the team of amiable staff were amongst the best we have experienced in Bali. A stay at Villa Tukad Pangi is akin to having a five-star retreat all to yourself, and comes highly recommended. It was nice to be greeted by the same familiar faces when we came back to the villa after three years. Nothing has changed in this sleepy rural riverside locale except perhaps the trees getting a little taller. Still such a beautiful retreat and one we were happy to return to. The rate now includes a car and driver for eight hours a day (excluding petrol), which makes the villa’s remote location less of an issue.

Villa Uma Nina

Villa Uma Nina

Indonesia » Bali » Jimbaran - Bukit » Jimbaran

There is something very easygoing about Villa Uma Nina, and we thought this must have been down to its serene situation and its beautiful presentation both indoors and out; we felt at home the moment we stepped inside.

Uma Nina is a great family villa; the garden is almost flat, despite the property’s hilltop location, so it’s great for children of all ages; there’s also a slide for the swimming pool, not to mention tortoises in the pond, which kids will absolutely adore. A sand petanque pitch at the bottom of the garden and games such as croquet provide further entertainment.

Rooms in the main house are equally sized and come with their own private balconies or verandas making the villa good for friends and couples sharing. The upstairs bedrooms and rooftop terrace, were the absolute best for gazing at the views of harbour and sea. Stone stools and petrified wood seats might not encourage you to stay seated up here for too long, but they look great and, along with many other natural furnishings and fittings, provide the villa with plenty of character.

Service was generally good and the manager was very attentive. We enjoyed the meals prepared for us by the villa cook, though if you wish to self-cater the kitchen is well-equipped for it. Alternatively, take advantage of the villa car and driver and go out to eat in Jimbaran.

Umah di Desa II

Umah di Desa II

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Umalas-Kerobokan

Umah di Desa II is stylish and cheerful and flooded with natural light, it also feels delightfully homely with its warm colours, pretty tiles and lovely garden. The vines that dangle from the flat roof of the lounge pavilion create wonderful softness. Privacy and discretion are paramount here, staff will ring the doorbell before coming in – so there are no awkward surprises should you decide to skinny dip. Completed in May 2012, Umah di Desa II was delightfully new and fresh at the time of our visit, a contemporary villa with the crispest linen, firmest cushions and immaculate appliances. Walking to the beach gave us a pleasant glimpse into our neighbourhood and we wandered along the sand at sunset to the funky beach club, Potato Head. We also discovered nearby Watercress, a charming healthy restaurant with lovely rice paddy views – while meat eaters will love the ribs and the vibe at Naughty Nuris. The location was perfect for us: not in the thick of Seminyak, but close enough to ride the bikes (provided) or to flag a cab.

Umah di Desa III

Umah di Desa III

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

Villa Umah di Desa III is sunny and cheerful and feels delightfully homey with its soft colours, pretty tiles and lovely garden. The design is modern yet rustic with an almost cottage-like vibe, but with all the elegance you would expect in a Bali villa. It is also utterly peaceful, and in the evening we could hear the sound of waves crashing in the distance. We loved the privacy and discretion: staff ring the doorbell before coming in, so there are no awkward surprises should you decide to take a skinny dip. Completed in December 2012, Umah di Desa III was sparkling new and fresh at the time of our visit, a contemporary villa with immaculate linen, the plumpest of cushions and shiny new appliances.

Walking to the beach gave us a pleasant glimpse into our picturesque neighbourhood. Take care though; the currents are quite strong here so make sure to swim between the flags. The funky beach clubs W and Potato Head are an easy stroll along the sand and you can get a casual Indonesian meal at the rustic cafes strung along the beach. Or get dressed to the nines and head to Mozaic Beach Club – one of Bali’s best restaurants – for a memorable dining experience. We also discovered nearby Watercress, a charming restaurant with great salads and cakes, and lovely rice paddy views. Naughty Nuri’s, famous for its barbecue ribs and Martinis, is also very accessible. The location was perfect for us, not in the thick of Seminyak, but close enough to ride the bikes (complimentary) or to flag a cab.

Umah Duri

Umah Duri

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Umalas-Kerobokan

Don’t let the discreet entranceway to Umah Duri fool you. Once you pass through it and go down the narrow bamboo lined path, a delightful scene unfolds: a beautifully designed villa just oozing with Balinese charm and style. Just far enough out of town to be quiet and peaceful we really enjoyed this villa. A long afternoon chilling by the pool, sinking into the sofas and getting a couple of great massages followed by some tasty home cooking by Komang (who fulfils the role of both manager and cook), made for a pretty fantastic stay. The surrounding area is slowly becoming quite the place to be, and lots of new eateries are popping up almost overnight so dining choices are never going to be thin on the ground. Should you should feel the need to cook, however, you’ll be well pleased by the big and well-fitted kitchen. That said, our vote stays with Komang.

Umah Maya

Umah Maya

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

What a great find Villa Umah Maya was, quiet and romantic, yet right in the middle of buzzy Seminyak, Bali’s chicest ‘hood, with the shops, restaurants and beach all within either walking distance or a short taxi ride. So, you girls in the party can send your boys off surfing while you get busy flexing their wallets.

Fenny, the manager/housekeeper, certainly knows her way around a kitchen and has recently been swotting up on Greek cuisine so make sure you have at least a couple of lunches at home by the pool and prepare to be amazed. And if you need anything else, Fenny is more than happy to jump on her bike and find it for you.

Definitely try out the hammocks as you laze the day away in the pool. Half in the water, half out of the water, these are fun, fun, fun.

Villa Umah Shanti

Villa Umah Shanti

Indonesia » Bali » Ubud

Villa Umah Shanti enjoys some of the most glorious views we have encountered in Bali. Perhaps not surprisingly, our favourite spot was by the pool, which seemed to float suspended above the valley surrounded by majestic trees and tropical blooms. It helps that the master bedroom opens directly onto the pool deck; night-time swimming (without staff around or steps to contend with) was enchanting.

The villa staff is very sweet and Dewa the villa manager was enthusiastic and helpful…nothing was too much trouble for him. Breakfast was beautifully presented, with tomato skins shaped into roses transforming a humble plate of scrambled eggs into edible art.

Though we were only two, we weren’t rattling around; in fact we were surprised at the intimacy of the place and, thanks to the terraced setting of the pavilions, feel the villa would work well for three couples. The romantically inclined as well as nature lovers, writers and yoga practitioners will find much magic at Villa Umah Shanti. But guests had better be sure-footed and unfazed by heights.  And with completely unguarded drops from the family pavilion deck and the living room, not to mention lots of steps linking the different pavilions, we can’t imagine a less relaxing holiday for parents with little ones!

Villa Coco Groove

Villa Coco Groove

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

Villa Coco Groove boasts chic, minimalist tropical living in a spacious garden setting. We found the villa to be very peaceful considering it’s situation in a compact residential area, near to Seminyak’s restaurant and shopping districts. The grassed coconut grove and large swimming pool provided an attractive focal point for our days of relaxation and we agreed that the vast gardens (a rarity for villas in this sought-after area), make Coco Groove a great place for functions and parties, or for families with kids who need lots of space to let of steam. Really, this villa is suitable for all age groups and offers exceptional value for money.

The villa is a fabulous blend of old and new. We particularly liked the Sarawak theme in the lounge; the back wall is adorned with baby carriers, masks, parang knives, oars and blowpipes of ethnic groups from the Borneo region, such as the Dayak, Iban and Orang Ulu. You can read all about them in a number of the books found in a small, but eclectic library in the master bedroom. Whilst the TV lounge is functional, the small screen and limited seating engineers it more towards a reading room or study (there are no TVs in the bedrooms either).

We found the staff (total seven) professional, friendly and speak good English. They live out, however hours are flexible depending on your needs, and with three security guards there is always someone on hand. Babysitters and masseurs are available on request at additional charge. The chef excelled in all the meals he prepared for us. You can choose from an extensive suggestion menu and the staff will do the provisioning (a small charge is made to cover petrol). A well-thought-out information book informs you of the day-to-day operations of the villa and recommends day trips which can be arranged by the staff, whilst also giving great advice on local attractions.

Villa Jempiring

Villa Jempiring

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

Villa Jempiring must be in the running for having one of the coolest swimming pool designs on the island. Not only does it slope gradually down into the deep but the shallow bits are painted and textured the colour and feel of real sand! Surround that with big green tropical plants under a big blue tropical sky and you can be forgiven for getting lost in a world of tropical island castaways. Even the daybeds are semi-submerged upon ‘the shore’ and, best of all, the tide never goes out. The owners have used recycled hardwood throughout that draws heavily on the indigenous themes of Eastern Indonesian that adds even more to the eclectic and wild experience. We especially enjoyed the positioning of the three upstairs bedrooms, which are bathed in sunshine with massive wraparound decks making a perfect spot for sun lovers. And the guest bedroom in the garden would be a perfect spot to put the in-laws or the teenagers. You also can’t ask for a better location if the beach or party scene is your raison d’etre.
