Considering its heart-of-the-action location in Bali’s sophisticated Seminyak, it’s extraordinary just how serene life is at Villa Kinaree. Thoughtful design combines classic and timeless Indonesian architecture with twenty-first century luxury and convenience to create a truly delightful villa and one we felt very much at home in. It’s very hard NOT to relax here with a gorgeous courtyard garden to enjoy, refreshing pool to dive into and a wide breezy balcony to stretch out on. Then there’s the very convivial pool table and bar area and the massive sofas to curl up on come evening time.

We loved the beautifully furnished bedrooms – especially the snug bedroom four set on its own above the living area - and the indulgent jacuzzi tub in the master bathroom. All rooms have plenty of private, comfortable sitting space, and the daybed outside the master bedroom made a lovely spot for a quiet read.

Although there’s a huge choice of places to eat and drink within easy reach of the villa, a chef is on hand to prepare a wide range of Indonesian and Western favourites for breakfast, lunch and dinner; just talk through your selection with him, or Theodora, Villa Kinaree’s friendly and very capable manager, and the rest will be taken care of.

Villa Kirana Ubud

If you are into flat roofs and minimalist, modern, white-walled design, this is probably not the villa for you. But if you love a bit of bold colour and history, colonial architecture, romantic hide-and-seek gardens, antiques and art, you will love Villa Kirana. This is the realisation of a dream, a real home, designed to accommodate and fulfil the needs of a Western family who take holidays in Bali. The villa, the garden and the interiors was designed by the internationally-acclaimed garden architect, Made Wijaya (known for his flamboyant, eclectic taste) and his team. It has been furnished with love, and showcases a delightful medley of fine art collected by the owners. We found it fascinating to wander through the rooms because we kept noticing artefacts or decorations that we hadn’t seen before. This is a place to explore and get lost in; every room is different, and there is so much space in the gardens, it’s very easy to escape from your companions.

Villa Melati

How very different these Sayan Ridge villas are from those in the south of Bali. A variable sky, cooler temperatures, loads of greenery and the sounds of the river, with views to stop the heart. It is like being in the heart of the jungle, and we loved it!

Villa Melati oozes traditional style and, with only three bedrooms sharing its large amount of space and gardens, there is never a danger of treading on anybody’s toes. Spend some time sitting in the balé lookout pavilion just down from the main house: stone steps lead you to an authentic bamboo, thatch and wood structure that looks out through the coconut and frangipani down to the working rice fields 100m below alongside the banks of the swiftly flowing Ayung River. Or spread a blanket on the lawn on the edge of the cliff with a good book and someone special and let the world float by. The rushing waters, birdsong and the chirps of insects and frogs will be all that you will hear, plus occasional hoots of laughter from rafters as they ride the rapids on the river below. As well as being a private home, Villa Melati is privately managed, so don’t expect the slick professional butler service that you might get in some of the bigger villas around the island. Instead, the staff here are warm, friendly, willing and charming, and Dayu is a great cook. We also made friends with Nona, the resident golden retriever, she’s gentle and very friendly, but if you’re not into dogs, the staff will keep her well out of your way.

Villa Samaki

As we leave the buzz of downtown Ubud and wind our way up along Jalan Suweta, I feel sure that Villa Samaki will provide us with a glimpse of real Ubud life, and I am not disappointed. Small pockets open up between the silk dress shops, tailors and small boutique hotels to reveal glimpses of the rice terraces that have made Ubud famous.

After a charming tour of the villa with Made (pronounced mah-day), the villa manager, we choose the lovely stand-alone master suite as our home-away-from-home for the evening. We didn’t have the luck of good weather during our stay, and it was a shame not to be able to fully enjoy the gorgeous infinity pool or explore the hillside as much as we would have liked, but it was wet season (December) so we shouldn’t have expected too much, and the covered dining balé by to the pool provided a protected outdoor spot to experience the grandeur of the river valley before us. White cranes would glide by at eye level and iridescent butterflies pollinated the tropical flowers around us.

In a perfect world, I would have taken full advantage of Made’s offer to have a masseuse scooter up from Ubud for a soothing massage in the pool balé, but because of the damp weather, a cup of coffee and a good movie up in the media room was a greater temptation. The comfortable couch here provided the perfect spot to while away a rainy day.

Villa Tao

After the long and busy drive from Seminyak we were super-excited to arrive at Villa Tao. As we sipped our welcome drinks and gazed out at the ocean, the glistening black-sand beach and the waves of Balian surf break just a short stroll down the grassy hill, we felt we had landed in paradise. And we loved the rooftop garden with its 360-degree views of the mountains and the beach. Looking down on the cows roaming the pastures, fisherman catching their dinner and the waves rolling in, we got a very real sense of the simple lifestyle that has attracted so many visitors to Bali’s shores.

At sunset we went to check out some of the local bars and eateries at Balian beach on the other side of the river. A very laidback surfer/backpacker crowd was hanging out in the beachside bungalows. It was obvious that the word was out that this was the place to be if you want to escape the hectic Kuta scene.

The staff were pleasant, and Komang the chef is on hand to cook up a wide variety of home-style meals according to a priced a la carte menu.Just be sure to give the villa a heads-up for any special dietary requirements as there are no western style supermarkets close by.

The villa itself had heaps of space and the gladak houses were definite standout features, but we felt the downstairs concrete bedrooms lacked a bit of soul. The villa is quite new (we visited in November 2011) and there were a few things missing – mosquito nets and blinds on the bathroom windows – but overall it was very well equipped.
