Villa The Beji

Our stay at Villa The Beji was delightful. The villa is incredibly well laid out, especially for families – it would make a smashing venue for two or three families to share. All six bedrooms are fabulously spacious and have extravagant bathrooms, and the living areas are all strategically positioned for parents to keep a watchful eye on children. There’s a huge amount to do at the villa itself – swimming pool, home theatre room, table tennis and gym, as well as a tennis and basketball court and a mini football pitch (the latter shared with the adjacent sister villa). If that’s not enough, nearby is the beach and the Finns Recreation Club, which provides first class recreational and leisure facilities. Guests of Villa The Beji enjoys complimentary access to the exclusive Finns Recreation Club Guests for up to 6 guests daily.

The Beji’s staff were a real pleasure and made our stay very easy – the chef produced great food, the waiters and waitresses were discreetly attentive and the villa manager very keen to assist. They made the villa particularly hard to leave when it was time to head home!

Villa Belong Dua

For a two-bedroom villa, Belong Dua delighted us with its generosity of space. The sitting room is huge and there’s a home theatre as well (a surprise, as this is usually reserved for at least a three-bedder). The garden and pool are also unusually large; the owners could have easily snuck one more bedroom pavilion in, but we are so happy they didn’t because it has left a wonderfully open space with wide sky views fringed by coconut palms and towering mature trees.

This is a real Bali experience, well away from the fashionable see-and-be-seen café culture of downtown Bali, but still with four-poster beds and gorgeous outdoor bathrooms to rival any of the big boys. When swimming in the pool, make sure you look up at the reflection in the big mirror that sits on the living room wall: the illusion doubles the size of the villa’s garden. And when have you ever seen yourself swimming before!? Sunsets on the beach are a short stroll away and do jump on one of the villa’s bicycles and head off out among the rice fields to explore the real Bali even further. The area is relatively flat and shady and the local people will never let you get lost.

Bendega Nui

Staying at Bendega Nui is a wonderful way to experience Bali. The neighbouring paddy fields scattered with colourful flags and tinkling bells to scare the birds away from the ripening rice; the crowing cockerels; clear blue skies and amazing sunsets were a delight in themselves, but to enjoy all of this from the luxurious surroundings of this stunning new villa (completed end 2009) was a real privilege.

The super-comfortable beds (I felt like Alice in Wonderland climbing up onto the deep mattress of the canopied four-poster in our bedroom!), bold colourful fabrics, tasteful pieces of art, impressive sound system and blissful swimming pool were just some of the features that made a very clear statement about how much care and thought Bendega Nui's owners (who regularly stay there themselves) have put into the design and finish of their tropical holiday home.

In recent years, the Canggu area has sprouted some exciting new venues for drinks and/or dinner – several of which you can walk to from the villa. That said, we felt no desire to eat out after sampling the chef's culinary creations: From roasted vegetable salads, to steak and chips, to chicken curry, cheesecakes and crème brulée – everything was beautifully presented, absolutely delicious, and served with a smile.

Bendega Nui is a peaceful retreat; breezes from the nearby coast kept things cool wherever we chose to relax – and there was no shortage of options, from the hidden deck beyond the pool, to the shady reading pavilion next to one of the pretty ponds, to the bedroom balconies with their lovely views. And what better way to round off the day than with a glass of wine and a good movie on the big-screen plasma TV, or a social game of pool over a couple of beers – listening to whatever takes your fancy from the vast selection on the Sonos sound system (or bring your own – iPod docks in every bedroom). We felt that Bendega has something to please everyone in the family and would also make a great place for a group of friends to get together for a holiday, as well as (especially if you rent the one-bedroom suite and three-bedroom Bendega Rato next door) an exceptional and truly memorable wedding venue.

And for those who’d rather retreat indoors to the media room there’s a vast choice of movies and music to be enjoyed on the 55-inch plasma screen with Apple TV and a blue-ray DVD player, or on the integrated Sonos sound system.

Although there is an ever-growing selection of restaurants and cafes within walking distance of the villa, we felt no desire to eat out after sampling Chef Dewa's culinary delights: from pizza cooked to order in the wood-burning brick oven, to roast vegetable salad, chicken curry, cheesecake and crème brulée – everything was beautifully presented, absolutely delicious, and served with a smile. While Bendega Rato comes across as quite a grown-up villa, there’s still something to please everyone in the family and, with the option of renting the adjoining one bedroom pavilion, or even sister villa, 5-bedroom Bendega Nui, it also becomes a great place for a big group of friends to get together, or a terrific wedding venue.

Villa Borimas

We couldn’t have picked a better place for our family vacation than Villa Borimas. It is cosy, peaceful and close to some fantastic beach clubs and great restaurants. But the best part was the villa staff team, who were all very friendly and warm. The views are magical, the villa overlooks the sea and the coastline, and every sunset was a spectacle to be enjoyed from a different spot each night - the poolside, the balconies, the moon deck, our bedroom, everywhere really!

Besides the amazing views, another advantage of being so high up was complete tranquillity. Traffic can get noisy in the village of Surin, but we couldn’t hear a thing from our lofty position. Our trip was all about putting our feet up. We spent a lot of time relaxing on the outdoor decks, in and around the pool, getting massages, reading or just talking with each other.

We had a delicious breakfast every day, enjoyed poolside under the shade of the pergola, and requested the chef to craft a few dinners for us when we didn’t want to go out. The food was always presented beautifully and was very tasty. On my husband’s birthday, we organised a barbecue up on the moon deck which he insists was one of his best birthday celebrations ever.

The living space is stylish and tasteful and there was plenty of room for everyone in our group. We will definitely be back!

Villa Canggu North

Our inspection revealed that Villa Canggu North would be a great choice for a small family or four friends who want to escape from the hustle and bustle of Seminyak. The pool and its deck is an extension of the large living and dining room, which can be alternatively be closed off for air-conditioned comfort. The beach is not a great swimming beach – this is a coast surfing Mecca – so do take care. It is fascinating, however, watching the local community at work. The boat sculpture in the living space is a work of art, not a toy, so if you have young children you will need to keep little fingers in check!

Villa Canggu South

Villa Canggu South is great for families or groups of friends who want to escape from the hustle and bustle of Seminyak. The pool is lovely and the pretty garden features mature trees and an immaculate 15 x 6 metre lawn, which is great for parties and even a family game of cricket. It’s also a big bonus that it’s such short walk from the beach, albeit not a great swimming beach – this is a coast surfing Mecca – so do take care. It is also fascinating to see the local community at work.

The villa interiors are filled with mesmerising modern artwork – paintings, murals and installations – by renowned local artists; whether you are an art connoisseur or a layman, there are enough art pieces here to keep you fascinated for hours. And there are plenty of spaces to relax. We really enjoyed spending time in the bright and breezy upper-floor lounge. Oh, and we were particularly impressed by the staff.
