Beach In Ten Villas

If being near the sea is a holiday ‘must have’, but walking into your bedroom with sand between your toes isn’t, these villas are less than 10 minutes drive from the beach - many within the soothing sound of the surf. (If you have to be right on the sand then try our Beachfront villas.)

Maan Tawan - Orchid Apartment

Maan Tawan - Orchid Apartment

Thailand » Phuket » Bang Tao Beach » Bang Tao

Though it may not have quite as much space as a private stand-alone villa, Maan Tawan Orchid is a great alternative for families or couples seeking a luxurious tropical holiday home. Modern and bright, Orchid is simply an all-round comfortable, inviting and fun place for all ages. Though we place it in the ‘mid-range’ category because it’s an apartment rather than a standalone villa, Maan Tawan’s service, facilities and design are all top-quality. It’s a well managed and cared for property, and we found the staff here to be attentive and helpful. Though services such as a chef and driver are not included, these are easily arranged for an extra charge.

Its location also has a wide appeal. Found at the quieter northern end of Bang Tao, it’s within easy walking distance of a quiet patch of sand for a blissful day of solitude away from the crowds. And with all the facilities of Laguna resort so close by, it’s also a perfect location for those who wish to indulge in some fine food and wine or have an adventure-filled holiday with sports and leisure choices including water sports, golf and ATV riding.

Maan Tawan - Penthouse

Maan Tawan - Penthouse

Thailand » Phuket » Bang Tao Beach » Bang Tao

Sunrise, sunsets, sunrise, sunsets. There aren’t too many holiday homes in Phuket that can lay claim to providing unfettered views of both sunrises and sunsets, but Maan Tawan Penthouse offers just that if you can muster up the energy to climb up to the gorgeous rooftop pool terrace at the designated times of day. Beyond these great views, the penthouse is simply an all-around comfortable, inviting and fun place to stay for all ages. Getting to the penthouse requires climbing three flights of stairs, however, so it could be a challenge for those with limited mobility or babies in tow. Though we place it in the ‘mid-range’ category because it’s an apartment rather than a standalone villa, Maan Tawan’s service, facilities and design are all top-quality. Maan Tawan - Thee Sahm Raan

Maan Tawan - Thee Sahm Raan

Thailand » Phuket » Bang Tao Beach » Bang Tao

Villa Thee Sahm Raan is one of the most balanced, well thought out and best presented villas we have seen in Phuket – it is probably why the owners use it a lot. It is the perfect holiday retreat for families or groups. The villa is clean, safe and enclosed, although the swimming pool is not fenced so non-swimmers would need to be watched. During our inspection we found the kitchen to be fully equipped – although the maid will do the cooking and grocery shopping if you want to escape those chores (provisions are on guest account).

The villa’s location is awesome – great beaches nearby, and convenient for restaurants, services, food and other shopping.

We revisited the villa three years after our first stay and were impressed to find that more facilities (including a computer and printer) and services have been added, thus we’re raising the review score a notch to reflect this. As well, Thee Sahm Raan is showing no signs of age – it is kept in pristine condition throughout.

Malgedara

Malgedara

Sri Lanka » South Coast » Habaraduwa-Koggala

We adored the tranquillity of this villa and its wonderfully rural village location. It is a little isolated, but this might be just what many people are after. We feel that nature lovers will especially like this villa since the garden is brimming with wildlife and Koggala Lake is just a short walk away; bird sightings are best in the early morning and before dusk – just don’t forget to bring your binoculars with you!

Families, too, will find this to be a great property, as the children will love the large garden, the pool with its generous shallow end and the attractions of the lake. Discounts are available for bookings exceeding a month and this might be attractive to long-stayers.

We thought that the bedrooms in the main house were comfortable though quite narrow; their numerous shuttered windows and doors onto the veranda and garden are very characteristic of the villa’s colonial heritage. Bathrooms offer a hint of modernity in a house where the old and the new have been merged, more successfully in some places than others; while the large 15-foot veranda is practical and more than compensates for the limited living space inside the house, we felt that it does flaw the property’s facade a little.

Although their English is limited, the staff looked after us well during our stay, and meals were agreed with the cook according to a menu priced at cost: expect home cooking rather than flamboyant cuisine. While the villa does have a mini stereo and a satellite TV with DVD player, the selection of DVDs and CDs is very limited so we’d recommend you bring your own with you, along with books and games for the kids.

The villa is now being looked after by an efficient management company who are on call should there be anything that the villa staff are unable to help you with.

Mandalay Hideaway

Mandalay Hideaway

Indonesia » Bali » Tabanan

How many times have you been bamboozled to the point of screaming blue murder with the mass of remote controls presented before you in a strange new place? No problems here. The thoughtful owners of this villa have written out instructions for each and every appliance (Apple TV, DVD, Blu-Ray, Indovision satellite channels, PlayStation and the sound system) in intricate detail, laminated them and given them a leather bound folder along with a library of every movie and DVD in the house to make new-media-stress a non-starter. What a joy! The staff (concierge, personal butlers, chef) are all professionally trained and as discrete as you instruct them to be. All we had to do was push the service button in the balé (and in every room) and there they were, smiling and ready to please. Think twice about having a treatment in the spa room, however; massages here are so good that you run the risk of calling the therapist back every single day for more, threatening to put a dent in your wallet. The beauty of the rice terraces, coconut palms, river and (on clear mornings and evenings) the mountains, were what got us the most though; they seemed so close you could almost reach out and touch them.

Mandalay Lake Villa

Mandalay Lake Villa

Sri Lanka » South Coast » Habaraduwa-Koggala

Mandalay is a rare slice of heaven. Its tranquil setting instantly relaxes the mind and makes work feel like a distant memory. Despite its out-of-the-way location (it takes 25 minutes to drive to Galle), it doesn’t feel completely cut off from the outside world as you can always enjoy the endless theatre atop the lake and watch the enthusiastic play of wildlife in the garden.

Although the villa makes a lovely retreat for a group of friends (it’s a great place for entertaining) there could well be some room-envy as the master bedroom is far bigger and more decadent than the other two (although the soft furnishings in each of these downstairs bedrooms were upgraded in 2013). For families or a decadent couple, Mandalay is an excellent choice. There are beaches within easy reach and plenty to explore in the locality.

The villa has a very generous swimming pool and a flat open garden that makes keeping an eye on the kids a breeze. The lounge in the main house, with TV and DVD player, is great for keeping the kids entertained at night and can also be used to sleep two more guests since the built-in sofas are the size of a single bed whilst the room itself is air conditioned.

The friendly cook (who’s also the villa manager) prepares some great meals; his rice and curry comes highly recommended, and he can prepare western dishes too. The staff leave you to your own devices which heightens the villa’s sense of privacy and seclusion.

Villa Maria

Villa Maria

Thailand » Phuket » Nai Harn

‘Summertime, and the living is easy’ crooned Ella Fitzgerald, and at Villa Maria it’s easier still, with no less than three living rooms to spread out in plus a comfy outdoor sitting area to boot. This, along with the villa’s two-bedroom self-contained suite and its sheer size, made us think – slyly – that Maria might be the perfect holiday choice for families who don’t get along! Of course, families who do get along will have an absolute ball here with the big pool-garden-party area and loads of space both indoors and out for playing and relaxing – not to mention the TVs, movies and music for those who love their electronic delights. Thoughtful features for families include trundles under all the single beds, accommodating an extra four young children (and allowing kids to have ‘sleepovers’ in each other’s rooms) and the detachable pool safety fence. With meals mostly taken care of by the full-time cook and a wealth of dining choices to enjoy within minutes, the only pressing issue of the day here was, ‘Beach or pool?’ Being located so close to the beach we could happily do both. (Declaration of bias: Nai Harn is our favourite beach in Phuket, so we are likely to have extra fondness for any villa located in this area!)

Maria is popular, so early booking is essential. When we arrived we caught the staff busy cleaning up the ‘aftermath’ of what looked to have been an exceptionally fun-filled family holiday: overflowing boxes of toys, pool toys and inflatables piled up on the terrace, extra chairs wedged in around the large outdoor dining table... Overall, this is simply a fun and festive villa. Our only regret was not having enough people with us during our visit to take full advantage of all the party zones!

Villa Mata Air

Villa Mata Air

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

Villa Mata Air occupies an incredibly peaceful and picturesque spot, where the only sounds come from birdsong and flowing water.  There are plenty of spaces for quiet contemplation, like the riverside deck, cushion-filled bale, and hidden temple gardens. The design is attractive, contemporary and comfortable, but it’s really the enchanted setting that seals the deal at Mata Air.  I am hardly a tree buff, but found myself deeply enamoured with the lush, leafy giants wrapped in webs of ropey vines that perfectly framed the pool and created the most tropical of vistas.  The neat design of pavilions and manicured lawns contrast well with the wilder riverside aspects, where untamed foliage creates a ‘back to nature’ setting.  The riverside studio pavilion is a fabulous addition; as a bedroom it makes for a private romantic hide away, alternatively, as an additional lounge area, it’s a great place to relax and enjoy the views and the sounds of the gurgling river.  The complimentary driver was great when we were in the mood for a change of pace, even if it was just a meal down at Echo Beach.
