Villa Kailasha

Villa Kailasha

Indonesia » Bali » Tabanan

Guests booking Villa Kailasha will hopefully have spotted that it’s in a remote location so there should be no surprise on arrival: we certainly thought the villa’s setting was sublime. Long stretches of black sand and marauding surf with hardly another tourist in sight. We spent most of our time stretched out by the pool enjoying the ministrations of the staff and soaking up the ocean views, but while we were there we were privileged to witness a village ceremony when the procession passed right by the villa’s front gate. We followed the merriment and colour down to the beach and experienced a Balinese event that, for us, was priceless.

For a change of scenery, take a stroll along the small roads and into the local villages for a slice of rural life. And for something a little more sophisticated, stop by the Alila Villas Soori Resort for dinner, or at least a sunset drink. The classy surroundings are pretty special and being so remote not many people drop in, so don’t miss the opportunity while you’re in the neighbourhood. We went for the said sunset drink but ended up staying for dinner – and really rated their kitchen. While their spa would probably welcome visitors as well, it’s perhaps more tempting to ask the villa staff to organise a therapist to come and give you a treatment at ‘home’.

La Lagune

La Lagune

Thailand » Koh Samui » Laem Set

Sitting in the beachside sala at La Lagune, we were struck by the secluded feel of the place. Even though it's not that far to the main tourist beaches (Lamai is 10km away), you're totally removed from the commotion of Koh Samui and that's certainly one of the of the villa's main advantages. Day and night we enjoyed the benefits of total escape, helped by sensitive staff who remained unobtrusive unless we needed them. The only contact with outsiders was the occasional greeting from a passing fisherman, and having the sunset completely to ourselves was as much of a treat as the opulent surroundings we enjoyed it from (turning off the garden lights to star gaze at night is even better). The villa's open design and cool, tiled floors mean you can pad around barefoot in your beach wear, and with so many options for outdoor repose you're only ever fully indoors while sleeping (weather permitting of course - the villa's folding doors can all be closed during wind or rain). Staying in the master suite is a pleasantly private experience as the only view from the bed is across your private terrace to the sea. The owners are definitely active types and having so many options for recreation close at hand means that even kids will rarely feel the need to venture beyond the garden and beach. Having said that, it was fun to strike off and explore the coastal paths on the villa's two bicycles and drag a kayak out to deeper water so we could paddle to the nearby offshore islands. With delicious meals prepared to order by the chef, coming back to La Lagune at the end of the day was always a pleasure, sound in the knowledge that a blissful, private and chic retreat awaited our return.

Villa LeGa

Villa LeGa

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

Returning to Villa LeGa recently, almost everything was the same as it was last time. And by that, we mean fantastic! The staff remembered us from our last visit and it felt like coming home. With Tropicola Beach Club next door, our evening plans were taken care of. And as villa guests, we got a discount at the beach club too. The villa boasts a new rooftop deck right at the front of the property, with sun loungers and umbrellas that look straight out to sea. All very Ibiza and la de dah. We loved it! LeGa is not only a stunning property, but it has an enviable location and comes with an excellent team of staff who were very good at anticipating our every need. There is a good menu on offer, with an excellent choice of western fusion cuisine. Whilst the interiors of Villa LeGa are stylish and beautifully arranged, the property still feels very homely. The ground floor living areas spill onto the swimming pool terrace and, as such, are very sociable, as is the whole villa; it feels fun, young and sophisticated. My favourite spot was the upper-floor terrace with its great views over the beach. It’s a fabulous venue for cocktails at sunsetR

Villa M

Villa M

Thailand » Koh Samui » Bophut

Built in 2009, Villa M is a lovely townhouse villa. Compared with many villas I have seen, it is full of charm and character but also loaded with modern conveniences. In addition it has the dual benefits of being right on the beach as well as being at the quiet end of Fisherman’s Village (not that there is a noisy end) with its popular street of restaurants and bars. The Freshly painted stark white walls, well maintained furniture and fixtures looked striking which with all the memorabilia gives a real pleasant colonial touch. It’s a house I would love to stay in but not own – keeping all the white clean must be a nightmare! That said the two staff (manager and cleaner/waitress) did an excellent job whilst we were there. Note the staff are on from 8am until 5pm unless needed longer and the villa manager is shared with another villa up the road. I would definitely recommend getting a chef (extra charge) for at least a couple of nights as the food we had was exquisitely done, both Western and Asian.
