Villa Canggu North

Villa Canggu North

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

Our inspection revealed that Villa Canggu North would be a great choice for a small family or four friends who want to escape from the hustle and bustle of Seminyak.  The pool and its deck is an extension of the large living and dining room, which can be alternatively be closed off for air-conditioned comfort.  The beach is not a great swimming beach – this is a coast surfing Mecca – so do take care.  It is fascinating, however, watching the local community at work. The boat sculpture in the living space is a work of art, not a toy, so if you have young children you will need to keep little fingers in check!

Villa Cemara

Villa Cemara

Indonesia » Bali » East Coast » Sanur

Wow…from private pool to shallow sea in five paces?  We’ve been lucky enough to stay in quite a few beachfront villas, but none have been as close as Villa Cemara!  We were amazed when we first walked through its unassuming entrance and into the enormous living pavilion; the view was so attention-grabbing that we hardly noticed the cold towel and freshly squeezed orange juice that were pressed into our hands in welcome.  When we eventually dragged our eyes away from the vista, Pande showed us around the place.  We loved that the bedroom suites were all named after tropical flowers found in the garden.  And the Australian owner’s taste was evident in the exquisite Indonesian furnishings, artefacts and art; gosh, is that really an original Arie Smit painting?  Surely that can’t be a real Hoffker?  And I felt an acquisitive flash for that fabulously gilded door framing a mythical garuda. The first question was where to relax. The pond bale? The living pavilion daybed? The poolside sun-lounger?  The pool was just too inviting, and after a refreshing dip, we slipped through the gate onto the golden sand for a leisurely sunset walk, returning to find a tasty dinner waiting for us.  (We found the staff to be very friendly and obliging, and appreciated that they knew when to disappear.  Two of them share cooking duties, and there’s an extensive suggestion menu of Balinese, Indonesian and western dishes … plus one of the cooks is dab hand at Mexican cuisine.)  This is a fantastic fair-share villa for couples or a group of friends; it’s very family-friendly too.  Though the master pavilion is gorgeous, we don’t think anyone would be upset not to get it; in fact we chose to stay in the guest bedrooms instead, preferring their scale and light.  The villa is great for those who want to relax and recharge their batteries, but the more energetic can go jogging or cycling along the promenade, or head to the water-sports centre for a spot of kite-surfing or sailing.  We thoroughly enjoyed our it-can’t-possibly-be-a-once-in-a-lifetime Cemara experience, and were not at all surprised to learn from the villa manager that well over 90% of guests return.  That’s now sure to include us too.

Villa Chada

Villa Chada

Thailand » Phuket » Kamala

We have stayed in luxury accommodation plenty of times before, but we have to say that Villa Chada is amongst our absolute favourites. The landscaped gardens are fantastic, the lawns are neat, the lotus ponds swarm with colourful fish as gargoyles stare fiercely, and frangipani and bougainvillea trees give colour and scent. It really is a tropical garden oasis.

We spent most of our time in the infinity pool, it’s big enough to exercise and overlooks the ocean, and is surrounded by tall tropical trees. If we weren’t in the pool, we could be found lounging on the sunbeds, soaking up the rays. Early evenings were spent on the daybed gazing out at the ocean and not doing a lot apart from listening to nature’s sounds that one misses in hectic city life. We saw colourful longtail fishing boats pass by, and one day, to our delight, a monitor lizard hurrying for cover on the cliffs below.

We did have a small tussle over who would stay in the master suite as it has the best views and a great wraparound terrace, but it really didn’t matter as all the suites have fantastic views and with three bathtubs to choose from to bubble up, we were more than happy.

The villa staff is friendly and discreet. The food was amazing, Thai cuisine with suggestions from our very own private chef. They even ran out to the local store to buy us some wine on request. Apart from the TV, there isn’t much in the way of entertainment so bring a book or two and enjoy well-earned tranquility. There’s plenty to do outside the villa, we spent one afternoon at the luxury Andara Resort, enjoying the fine dining experience and watching children take part in cookery classes.

Dea Villas - Villa Radha

Dea Villas - Villa Radha

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

There have been a few changes since we stayed at Villa Radha two and a half years ago, with the addition of two new villas to the enclave, a children’s playground, a gym and a spa. Staying at Villa Radha now means you have the choice of two spas on your doorstep. We decided, however, that we preferred the bygone era ambiance of the totally private wooden spa building within Villa Radha’s magical garden. Like the villa itself, the spa is another antique building so it is more in keeping with the overall character and charm. We noticed that with a total of five villas on the estate there is a now a little bit of hustle and bustle (and dare we say modernity) outside of Radha’s garden walls, but tucked away in our own private paradise – the gardens have grown and are even more beautiful than we remembered – we were able to completely relax and enjoy the wonderful service of the staff, and the great food. If you’re into sleek contemporary design the ethnic, rustic style of Villa Radha may not to be to your taste, but it is nevertheless immaculate and very comfortable, with all the trappings of the 21st century. There is no sitting room as such, but we enjoyed relaxing on the veranda, and were also very comfortable watching TV and movies in the air conditioned bedroom. As for the garden, well this is a landscaping triumph: forget any ideas of a modern Zen-like space, this garden will bewitch you with its tropical abundance of giant taro leaves, spiky pandanus, fan, parlour and travellers palms, bird’s nest ferns, heliconia, flowering frangipani, and rare fruit trees. It will make you wonder how it can be so full (almost to the point of being overgrown) and yet so meticulously maintained. At first we thought it was a little bit expensive for a one-bedroom villa, but when you consider the uniqueness of the property, the space, the facilities, the butler service, the pool, spa and gorgeous garden, you’ll probably agree that it’s extremely good value for money.

Des Indes I

Des Indes I

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

Our 2017 re-inspection of Villa Des Indes I revealed an immaculate, eclectic home that has been lovingly furnished by its owners to celebrate the rich heritage of Indonesia through a fine collection of antiques, artefacts, curios, local artwork, colonial prints and classic sculptures. The villa is a true delight, enhanced by its central location but very quiet and private feel. Once inside you are truly in your own world and, given the very gracious staff, a wonderfully enjoyable one at that. The chef prepared an excellent and beautifully presented meal during our stay – the Dory dish and ikan lilit (fish satay) were delicious; so it’s easy to imagine a full-blown dinner party in this gorgeous setting, illuminated by scores of flickering candles. Des Indes I will delight families and groups who appreciate being surrounded by a sense of history alongside the villa’s many contemporary luxuries.

In our opinion, it is still one of the most unique East-meets-West, old-meets-new villas in Bali.

Emerald Beach Villa 4

Emerald Beach Villa 4

Thailand » Koh Samui » Bang Por-Nathon

As an independent couple with plenty of travel experience, we found Emerald Beach Villa offered everything we needed on a beachside break and represented good value when compared to similar accommodation in a hotel. It would work equally well for a family. An agreeable, practical space, clearly designed for outdoor living, we spent most of our time either by the pool, on the beach or in the fan-cooled dining pavilion with the sliding doors flung open to catch the sea breeze. The rear pavilion is something of an anomaly, especially the 'greenhouse' lounge which gets very warm during the day. The bedrooms however, are spacious, cool and comfortable, although with so much glass the morning sun tends to flood in so light sleepers may find early rises become the routine. The upstairs twin bedroom is great for older kids (say seven years and above), but families with toddlers may find the steep stairs and upper landing that lead to it a concern.

Renting a vehicle is highly recommended if you plan to eat out a lot, although the in-villa menu suggestions are varied if you opt to pay extra for an in-house chef. A jolly cleaner arrives every morning after breakfast and again in the evening, she's accompanied by the helpful villa manageress who deals with special requests and will even nip to the local shops to buy basic provisions. Essentially, it is the beautiful garden, quiet beach and stunning views that appeal most. The somewhat remote location makes the holiday home (villa may be a tad generous) feel your own as soon as you arrive and although the neighbours are very close by, walled grounds create a pleasant, personalised holiday environment. As a private alternative to Samui's more upmarket resort accommodation it is an attractive choice.

Hachiko Chalet

Hachiko Chalet

Japan » Niseko » Hirafu

We loved the location and abundance of natural light at Hachiko. The common areas situated on a single floor are ideal for gathering and unwinding, whether for breakfast or at the end of a day spent exploring the breathtaking Hokkaido outdoors.

The muted earth tones throughout the chalet have a lovely grounding effect, and the decor and design is sleek Scandinavian chic, a real joy to step into and wake up to.

The bedrooms being spread out over two levels meant that each member of our group had a comfortable ‘nest’ to retreat to whether to catch up on some sleep, read a book or get a massage in peace. The addition of a drying room for skis and boots, plus the laundry facilities, dishwasher, and car parking space are also great facilities.

Then, there’s the complimentary housekeeping and the driver-on call service which was great! We used this to go to the supermarket and for daily trips to and from the gondola with all our gear.

We loved wandering out into the charming streets of Hirafu village; there are bars, restaurants, boutiques and cafes to be discovered, though be careful in winter time - the roads can get slippery.

One evening, we indulged in a celebratory meal at home cooked by Niseko Gourmet, and it was superb. The chef prepared an omakase (degustation) meal featuring seasonal Hokkaido ingredients especially for us.

The Headland Villa 1

The Headland Villa 1

Thailand » Koh Samui » Taling Ngam

You'd be hard pressed to find a more romantic spot than The Headland Villas. The sunsets are unbelievable and the design definitely lends itself to love, with special touches like private bathroom terraces and sliding wooden shutters outside the bedrooms for added privacy. Even if you bring the kids or share with friends you can easily escape to your own space (upstairs in the TV room, for example while the kids are in the pool).

For those craving company and variety, being virtually inside the grounds of a luxury resort means the options for dining and entertainment are far more diverse than you would expect in such a secluded location. The cool, white decor and uncluttered interiors not only show off your sun tan, but also mean you don't worry too much about drifting between the pool, terrace and fridge in your beach gear. The staff keep a low profile and are 'on-call' rather than 'in-situ' for most of the time (although extra hands can be brought in, as needed, at extra cost), so you're left to do your thing in satisfied peace.

Being part of a small estate also gives you the option of hiring more than one of The Headland Villas for a family gathering or celebration. Once ensconced in your own villa, however, you neither see nor hear your neighbours unless you want to. It's quite rare, even on Samui, to find such modern comforts so close to unspoilt nature and traditional island life. The combination of the two makes for a memorable holiday indeed.

Since our initial visit three years ago, the Headland Villas have flourished and now blend even more naturally into their surroundings as the gardens have become more established. The properties have been well-maintained, with little evidence of wear-and-tear.
