Sensible For Seniors Villas

Not great on stairs or need lifts, ramps and bathrooms for wheelchairs? Asia is not famous for catering for travellers with mobility issues. These villas at least try. If you do need more help though do contact us and we will do what we can.

Villa Bugis Seminyak - Villa Olive

Villa Bugis Seminyak - Villa Olive

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

Positioned only a few hundred metres from Jalan Raya Seminyak and Jalan Abimanyu (aka Dhyana Pura ‘party’ street), Villa Bugis Seminyak Gardens properties are well located for a wide choice of restaurants, nightlife, shops and Seminyak Beach. Yet because they are set well back from the main roads, the villas also offer the perfect retreat from the hustle and bustle. The immediate environment is peaceful and quiet with very little traffic noise, but it’s worth noting that ever-developing Seminyak is awash with construction projects so it’s worth checking for an update on your immediate surroundings before booking.

In each villa there’s a useful information file that details everything from staff telephone numbers to where to eat and what to do. We found the staff to be very helpful and discreet, arriving at the times they said they would and filling us in on the details that we needed to know. They took care of the housekeeping as well as preparing and serving daily breakfast, but left us to languish in complete privacy the rest of the time (the team was always on call if we needed anything). The villas are watched over by a security team, and the villa management office is conveniently situated only one kilometre away.

Villa Bugis Seminyak - Villa Rama

Villa Bugis Seminyak - Villa Rama

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

Villa Rama is an excellent choice for a couple, family or small group of friends who are looking for a well priced villa. This residence is a fantastic alternative to hotel accommodation in Seminyak, offering guests more space, privacy and better facilities. However if you have stayed in Balinese villas before you may find the level of service below expectations – the villa coordinator is a lovely chap, and very helpful, however staff are not around to prepare meals (except for breakfast) or serve drinks as in many Bali villas. A chef can be brought in on request, however this option is a little expensive at Rp 50,000 per head plus ingredients, and not really necessary with all the affordable restaurants within walking distance. The villa’s location, right in the heart of Seminyak, is a major plus for those who like to wander around the shops without having to organise a driver or taxi – similarly it’s a great location for those who want to let their hair down and stumble home in the early hours. We enjoyed mixing drinks in the tropical poolside kitchen and hanging out around the pool on the bar stools, sun loungers, and daybed in the balé. The large TV is great for watching movies and playing Wii, having unlimited WiFi internet access is also a plus.

Bulan Putih

Bulan Putih

Indonesia » Bali » Jimbaran - Bukit » The Bukit

Villa Bulan Putih is a great place to get hitched! The grounds are the perfect size and the ocean backdrop will live on in photos forever.

And those views! Since the villa faces north east, the ocean doesn’t turn inky black come night-time but instead takes in the twinkling lights and energy of southern Bali in a broad arc. On clear mornings, the mountains that form Bali’s backbone fill the horizon, while the crashing waves of nearby Bingin Beach can be heard 24/7. The views get even better from the first- and second-floor balconies; a quick glance from here in the early mornings will ascertain whether or not the waves are worth getting out of bed for.

Having seven bedrooms provides a lot of space for family and friends, and there’s even up to four extra beds and a TV room that can be converted to a bedroom for any overflow. Kids will love the size of the villa grounds, where they can run around to their hearts’ content. The staff are a real treat and never missed a beat.

Villa Bungadesa I (5BR + 1)

Villa Bungadesa I (5BR + 1)

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

This little enclave across the river from Batubelig beach is as peaceful and quiet as the day is long. All we could hear at night was the sound of the rolling surf through the open windows. And the early morning view  -  from the bed in the master suite  -  over the pink-capped waves of the Indian Ocean was inspiration... at its very best! The gardens at Bungadesa are huge  -  filled with soft lawns, flowering tropical plants, fruit trees (you’ve got to taste the homegrown passion fruit) and a wonderful mix of Indonesian architecture and indigenous statues. This place catches the sun and the cooling sea breezes in equal parts making for perfect sunbathing conditions beside the pool. And the villa staff are great  -  funny, sassy, chatty when needed and gone like the wind when we wanted to be alone. A sweet touch was a surprise gift for the ladies, while Nana’s home-cooking proved to be superb, especially her seafood curry.

Make sure you take the time to nip down the local lagoon-side restaurant on your way back from the beach. It’s charming and rustic and, as well as a great menu of holiday favourites, can rustle up a half-decent pizza in a flash... and the beer is always icy cold. Villa Capung

Villa Capung

Indonesia » Bali » Jimbaran - Bukit » The Bukit

Villa Capung is refreshingly unpretentious, the kind of place where you walk in, promptly collapse on the sofa and immediately feel right at home (if only home had views like this!). While the villa is not huge, the views of pristine hills and the expanse of Indian Ocean that spread before you create a seemingly endless sense of space, and the villa has been cleverly designed to maximise options for privacy. The master suite is gigantic, while the second bedroom has its own private deck as does the garden suite.

The owners spend quite a bit of time here, and have struck a perfect balance between elegance and comfort: this very popular villa feels well loved and lived in. Enjoying the views from the infinity pool was a definite highlight, especially in the soft late-afternoon light, which deepens the colours of the leafy foliage in the garden. However, Capung really comes into its own in the evening when dark amber lamps cast a seductive glow over the living room, accentuating the crimson furnishings.  Spotlights illuminate the palms and lotus pond, and the lights of Bali twinkle like a fairyland far below. There is a wonderful heady sensation of being so high up, and the villa seems remarkably good value considering these million dollar views.

The staff are efficient and kind, immediately on hand if we needed something, but entirely unobtrusive the rest of the time, and we loved that they can mix cocktails!

Coconut Grove

Coconut Grove

Sri Lanka » South Coast » Ahangama

Coconut Grove is a wonderful retreat which, despite its privacy and modern additions, including a swimming pool, offers a chance to experience life in an authentic Sri Lankan village. That said, we noticed on our recent visit that the area is seeing quite a lot of development in terms of small hotels and villas; the plus side of which being that the number of tourist-friendly restaurants is likely to increase.

The cottage is perfectly set up for families, especially as the two rooms to the front of the house have smaller double beds (or large singles), which would be perfect for children. However, it would be an equally good choice for a group of friends wishing to stay a little off the beaten track. The living areas – both inside the house and outside in the garden – offer plenty of cosy places to relax and private pockets for escape.

The wildlife is magical here, and right on your doorstep. Whilst sipping afternoon tea in the poolside pavilion we watched monkeys playing in the trees as birds twittered melodiously overhead. The large lawned garden is a fansasyland for roaming kids but supervision is necessary around the pool as it quickly gains depth.

The staff kept the house clean and tidy during our stay, and were on hand to assist us with anything we needed. The staff do not stay in the house at night although the gardener/watchman lives in a small building tucked independently to one side of the property. If the housekeeper is not needed to assist with making afternoon tea or dinner, you can dismiss her early and enjoy the run of the house all to yourselves.
