Kurumba House

Kurumba House

Sri Lanka » South Coast » Tangalle

What a great beachside bolthole; simple, unfussy and most importantly, very relaxed. Minimal clothing, stacks of books and an iPod are all you’re ever going to need to bring with you on a visit to Kurumba House, if that. Its idyllic seaside situation was quiet and peaceful. The good-natured staff team immediately enveloped us on arrival meaning that for most of our stay our feet were nowhere near the ground, though this was due in large part to the surplus of comfy seating and the fact that we could gaze out at the ocean even whilst lying in bed. Tekla cooked enthusiastically (provisions are on guest account) though if you fancy cooking for yourself then the staff will happily go out shopping on your behalf if you furnish them with a list. Tangalle is a very laid back beach resort with few places to go out and eat – there’s only one restaurant along Mawella Beach – but this matches the property’s nature perfectly. Kurumba has very few facilities (no swimming pool, TVs or music systems) however with a beach to explore, a sea to enjoy and a beautiful climate to soak up this is the type of place you visit to escape the distractions of everyday life.

L'Orchidee Residences - Villa Phala A3

L'Orchidee Residences - Villa Phala A3

Thailand » Phuket » Patong

From its gorgeous sea-view setting in Patong’s hills, we found Villa Phala to be the perfect place to enjoy opulent surrounds and some good old-fashioned pampering, yet not be completely withdrawn from the world. ‘Carefree’ best describes the experience here, with a mind-boggling range of facilities, services and attractions easily available and close at hand.

Every day was different. One day we retreated completely and lounged by the pool, ordering our meals from the estate’s à la carte menu and catching up on some reading while stretched out on the wooden deck chairs. The next day we wandered downhill into central Patong and plunged into its busy hawker-lined streets and shopping arcades, and when the heat and crowds got to be too much, we beat a hasty retreat to the villa.

We were very impressed with the level of care taken in both the villa’s design and upkeep. L’Orchidée clearly runs a tight ship, with a large team of staff and contractors providing service for 25 villas, keeping the villa and the entire estate neat, tidy, and looking brand new even though it was built in 2006. Service is efficient and professional; all of our requests were understood and taken care of.

In all, we found Villa Phala to be an ideal holiday home, offering ample opportunity for both exploration and utter relaxation for people of all ages. Kids especially will delight in having a choice to play in the villa’s private pool or hang out with other children in the shared pool and shallow children’s pool at the club house, just a few minutes’ walk away.

La Lagune

La Lagune

Thailand » Koh Samui » Laem Set

Sitting in the beachside sala at La Lagune, we were struck by the secluded feel of the place. Even though it's not that far to the main tourist beaches (Lamai is 10km away), you're totally removed from the commotion of Koh Samui and that's certainly one of the of the villa's main advantages. Day and night we enjoyed the benefits of total escape, helped by sensitive staff who remained unobtrusive unless we needed them. The only contact with outsiders was the occasional greeting from a passing fisherman, and having the sunset completely to ourselves was as much of a treat as the opulent surroundings we enjoyed it from (turning off the garden lights to star gaze at night is even better). The villa's open design and cool, tiled floors mean you can pad around barefoot in your beach wear, and with so many options for outdoor repose you're only ever fully indoors while sleeping (weather permitting of course - the villa's folding doors can all be closed during wind or rain). Staying in the master suite is a pleasantly private experience as the only view from the bed is across your private terrace to the sea. The owners are definitely active types and having so many options for recreation close at hand means that even kids will rarely feel the need to venture beyond the garden and beach. Having said that, it was fun to strike off and explore the coastal paths on the villa's two bicycles and drag a kayak out to deeper water so we could paddle to the nearby offshore islands. With delicious meals prepared to order by the chef, coming back to La Lagune at the end of the day was always a pleasure, sound in the knowledge that a blissful, private and chic retreat awaited our return.

Villa Aliya - Laksmana Villas

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

We have no doubt that this villa is a great place for families and for entertaining. One of the bedrooms is also dedicated to the enjoyment of children, furnished with beanbags and equipped with soft toys and games, a large, flatscreen TV,DVD player and a good selection of kids’ movies. The staff really proved their ability to look after us, accommodating all of our last minute requests with willingness, ease and big Balinese smiles. The location in Seminyak is absolutely superb, and the villa is gorgeous!

The Lavender House

The Lavender House

Sri Lanka » Hill Country » Pussellawa

We liked that The Lavender House blends authentic colonial hospitality with contemporary living as this resulted in just the right balance of comfort and personality. The location too, though isolated, complements the experience as views are of endless tea fields and mountains. As a couple, its privacy and seclusion felt romantic; however I imagine that the bungalow would be great, if not better for bigger groups. Families will appreciate the bungalow’s spaciousness; large lawn, big pool and generous grounds hosting a jogging track and clay tennis court provide plenty to entertain different members of the family; there are also many places both inside and out where pockets of privacy can be found – each suite’s own private garden is a delight. Aside from walking the tea trails and visiting a factory, there was little else to do in the immediate local area, making it was a good place to concentrate on thoroughly relaxing rather than feeling the pressure to explore – take some good books. Rooms are generously sized and although the master bedroom is a little larger than the others each room is tastefully decorated; we particularly loved the dreamy cushioned window seat in the twin room. The bathrooms were a real delight and we loved the generous selection of toiletries. Wine connoisseurs will appreciate the cellar’s selection of wine (including bubbly) and full bar; there’s more quantity and range than we have found elsewhere in the region. The staff were always professional and the chef’s cooking was excellent; we liked the fact that we could go into the kitchen and watch him prepare our meal or have an impromptu curry demonstration. Guests can use the kitchen too if they wish although given the quality of the food we feel this is unlikely. It was great being able to plug our iPod into the Bose sound system and listen to our own music even when down by the pool.

Layan Estate - Villa Omnia

Layan Estate - Villa Omnia

Thailand » Phuket » Bang Tao Beach » Bang Tao

Villa Omnia makes for a very pleasant family holiday home. It benefits from being on a mature estate so avoids much of the construction malaise from which other estates suffer. The villa itself is spacious and very light thanks to lots of glass doors and windows. It is very well set up for families – an outstanding pool with good shallow section, toys, playroom and plenty of outside space to let off steam.

As with many recent construction projects in Phuket, the build is not of the highest standard (patchy paint, light terrazzo cracks, plasterboard walls) but these issues are very minor and would not detract from a great holiday – and the complex has a management company to fix any problems. The privacy is excellent as are the outside options – a lovely sala at the end of the pool, pleasant outdoor dining and good sun-trap terraces with loungers. The kitchen is modern and well equipped – nice touches like iced glasses in the freezer – but comes with almost no provisions so a supermarket shop is essential. Bedrooms are large and comfortable and the bathrooms very practical although note that one queen and twin bedroom share a bathroom – good for a family as access to the twin is either from outside or through the queen room.

The Lotus Residence

The Lotus Residence

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

When holidaying at The Lotus Residence, you just won’t want to leave the premises. We didn’t. We didn’t need to!  Everything you could possibly need for relaxation and fun are right here; swimming pools, jacuzzi, plunge pool, a yoga/pilates studio, a choice of sitting, dining and chilling spots, a fascinating working rice field within the grounds, a gorgeous spa at the bottom of the garden, and space – lots of it.

The spa was our second port of call after a dip in the swimming pool, and we spent a delightful couple of hours there having a massage, a sauna and a rain-rinsed soak in the jacuzzi. There’s an icy plunge pool for the adventurous (or foolhardy, which, according to one of us, worked in perfect tandem with the sauna. The other one of us disagreed!

And while the kitchen might not grace the pages of Vogue Interiors (it’s built for staff use but contains every appliance and condiment you could need), we’re sure that if Gordon Ramsey turned up he’d clap his hands and say, “We can work with this. Let’s get cracking.” The meals produced here – the villa operates a priced menu, but special requests are catered for – is stupendous!

If you should feel the urge to escape from this jungle paradise, there’s a fabulous golf course as well as some remote beaches within a 20-minute drive. The sea can be a bit treacherous, however - only for strong swimmers.
