Villa Infinity

Villa Infinity

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

The beauty of this villa is the size, (and of course the views). Everything about it is huge and it is totally geared up for large groups of people, weddings and parties, with an extensive sound system (complete with hidden speakers that extend through the garden) and a highly professional kitchen with five-star cuisine prepared by two chefs. The U-shaped sofa in the living pavilion can accommodate 22 people, while the dormitory can accommodate 12 kids or, alternatively, the same number of adult guests who need to bunk down for the night. Note: although this room is not really suitable for adults, guests at events and weddings can sleep here for an additional fee. There were just two of us staying at Infinity, so we felt a bit lost lazing by the large pool all by ourselves. Still, it is a beautiful sprawling expanse of lawn and beautiful architecture so we got over that concern pretty quickly and got into the sheer amount of space available to us by imagining the stellar events that must take place here. An early morning swim is a must, especially as the pool is the warmest we have encountered. Mornings at Infinity are also a time of spectacular beauty with birds singing and crickets chirping; you can see the volcanic backbone of Bali on the horizon and watch the farmers out in their fields tending their crops. Just stunning!

Villa Inti

Villa Inti

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

Green is said to be soothing for the soul, and in the verdant surrounds of Villa Inti almost every shade is represented; luminous rice paddies, spindly palms, lush leaves and foliage all conspiring to induce absolute calmness. Gurgling water fountains add to the serenity of this villa which feels wonderfully worn in without a hint of being worn out. The owners have great taste, obviously favouring comfort over ostentation and we happily soaked up the sense of intimacy and warmth, feeling right at home from the minute we walked in.

The atmosphere is one of pure tropical languor, easily indulged while sinking into a sea of cushions, sprawling on a sofa or lounging in a poolside deck chair. Service is relaxed – more of the ‘ask for’ rather than ’anticipated’ style – which suited us, but may not be ideal for those who like to be waited on hand and foot. When we managed to tear our eyes away from the scenery, we worked our way through the plethora of books, magazines, CDs and games, lamenting the fact that we didn’t have time for everything. We were happy to switch off, but the fast internet connection, good mobile reception and fax machine are handy for those who need to stay in touch with the outside world, which – despite the rural setting – isn’t actually that far away.

Ivory House

Ivory House

Sri Lanka » South Coast » Galle

The rural setting of Ivory House is undeniably idyllic.  Often when you stay on the coast you miss out on experiencing the island’s lush, rural hinterland.  Here you can enjoy the best of both worlds as beaches are accessible in 10-15 minutes (there are plenty of local sprays of sand for sunbathing).  Families will find this house suits them well; the gentle lawns and shallow ledge of the pool are both child-friendly.

The villa’s wraparound veranda makes the most of the rural environs, and although it is scantily furnished with only a round table for six, there are loungers in the garden and beside the pool.  Wide folding doors bridge the gap between indoors and out, and thanks to their location to the front of the house, the huge living room and the front master suite benefit most from the rural vistas.  The second master bedroom is tucked behind, but has its own side veranda, whilst the remaining two bedrooms – one of which is very small and would suit a single traveller, a child or perhaps even a nanny – open onto the living room.

The staff looked after us well and we were happy with the chef’s cooking – amongst other items, his sweet potato and coriander soup was delicious.  We’d also recommend the Sri Lankan breakfast.  Also try to visit the nearby Kahanda Kanda hotel for afternoon tea or a meal at least once during your stay.

Jagaditha

Jagaditha

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Seseh-Tanah Lot

Enticing, uncomplicated and restorative; this is exactly how a beach property should be. The aesthetics of Jagaditha’s build, especially the gorgeous landscaping, felt perfectly in tune with the surroundings without cluttering or detracting from the serenity that this location brings. I loved how each bedroom enjoyed different outlooks that were equally appealing; the lily pond lapping onto three of the ground floor bedrooms was enchanting. Children especially will find lots to interest them here as there were frogs, dragonflies and fish galore, plus a flat lawn for letting off steam. A second dining area with shade-giving parasols to one side of the garden comes highly recommended for daytime dining as it beautifully overlooks the swimming pool, garden and sea and feels refreshingly informal. All outside areas come with Bose amplified sound that you can connect to your own iPod. The gym comes only with a rowing machine and a Power Plate, but if you’re feeling enthusiastic Jagaditha’s guests can use the fitness centre in the nearby Canggu Club in addition to the tennis courts, creche, restaurants and swimming pools. There’s a big staff team at Jagaditha and they do a great job. Fusion cuisine is on the menu and the chef comes recommended; we really enjoyed all of our meals.

Jeda Villa - Bali 3BR

Jeda Villa - Bali 3BR

Indonesia » Bali » Pemuteran

We love the rural wilds of north-west Bali with its dry, almost Mediterranean climate and total lack of tourist hordes, so we are almost loathe to share news of this little gem of a villa for fear that it will become so popular that we will never get a chance to go back. Surrounded by thick lowland forest with towering mountains to the rear and ocean views to the front, Villa Bali at Jeda Villas is an oasis of lush lawns and gardens and glorious contemporary-Bali-style architecture that fair cries out “Love me. Enjoy me. Never leave me!”

Despite the remoteness of the area (or is that because of it?) there are many adventure activities to be had and experienced: snorkelling for the laid back, scuba diving for the more intense, mountain climbing, mountain biking, nature trekking, kayaking, bird watching and all round general rural exploration, which always turns up a few unexpected goodies such as stumbling across a Hindu village ceremony or witnessing fishermen bringing in their catch at dusk. Alternatively, like us, you can just do nothing and lie beside the pool and read books, drink beer and watch the gardeners cutting the grass.

The staff are all from the local village and haven’t wasted time in tourism school learning how to unfold starched white linen napkins in your lap - that’s not what this part of Bali is about. But even so, expect great tasting Western and Indonesian dishes, honest service, smiles and a glorious welcome.

As chilled out as we were, we were keen to seek a deeper state of atrophy through the art of massage, which turned out to be only a phone call away with the choice of a female therapist or a local healer man from the nearby village. Both massages come highly recommended but do not exceed one per day or else you will turn to jelly.
