Villa Mayana

Villa Mayana

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

Arriving at Villa Mayana with a small group of friends, we immediately felt both at home and spoilt in all the right ways. The design and layout is perfect for plenty of social hang-out time, while the open views of gardens, pool, rice fields and sky give a grand impression.

It was a treat to soak in the luxurious tubs in the downstairs ensuites, and while the upstairs bedroom lacks a tub, it does have its own furnished landing area overlooking the lounge, and is good spot for some private reading or surfing the net from your laptop (WiFi connection is not the strongest, so don’t expect to be doing much downloading). This upstairs bedroom would not be suitable for younger kids though, as neither the steps nor the landing area is safely railed.

Feeling so peacefully secluded and surrounded by nature, yet with such easy access to all that Bali has to offer thanks to a complimentary car and driver (guests do pay for petrol), we felt that Villa Mayana offers a well-rounded home away from home.

Villa Niloufar

Villa Niloufar

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Seseh-Tanah Lot

Upon arrival at Villa Niloufar, our opinion about the modern architecture was initially divided. But over the course of 24 hours it became two very positive ‘yays’. This villa is refreshingly different in that it has thrown out any pretence to traditional Bali style (thatched-roofs-and-coconut-wood) by following a rule of its own. Despite its clean lines, nature is embraced by the design. Niloufar is also way more eco-friendly than most villas profess to be, with passive cooling techniques such as cross ventilation and rooftop ponds, an advanced ioniser filter system for the swimming pool, and a water recycling system that allows waste water to be reused in the gardens.  We first reviewed Niloufar in 2009, and on a recent revisit we were impressed with how well the villa has been maintained.

The staff are friendly and diligent; they are there when you need something, but also understand the importance of privacy. The infinity lap pool sits above the river valley with beautiful views, while the sun loungers at the far end are in the form of one large daybed with individual uprights, making for a very communal lazing space. Once installed in the gazebo with the drink of your choice, you can sit back and enjoy the scene in front of you: the river, banked with mature trees, giant bamboo and jungle, and a rice terrace on the far side. This is also a great place for a massage. Judging from the sights and sounds, there is an abundance of wildlife around the villa; we counted many swifts and kingfishers, and even watched a large monitor lizard lazily swim across the river. A dip in the river is fun, there are a couple of small rapids and the water is super-refreshing (but don’t swallow it). There is also a small temple and a holy freshwater spring on the river’s edge. It’s a thrill to stay in a piece of modern architecture that feels as though its roots are in the dwellings of the ancients.

Nirwana Golf Villas - Ocean and Golf

Nirwana Golf Villas - Ocean and Golf

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Seseh-Tanah Lot

Even though you’re almost on the fairway of one of Asia’s best golf courses, you don’t have to be a golfer to enjoy a stay at this villa. Private homes with beachfront locations are not in abundance on Bali’s south-west coast, which makes Ocean and Golf a particularly good find as well as being good value. There are few better spots to enjoy the famous Bali sunsets than from this villa’s breezy balcony.

Ocean and Golf incorporates the best of both worlds; a quiet and private residence which, for an additional daily fee per person, also has access to leisure facilities at the neighbouring 5-star resort – you can even order room service (although you do have your own cook who prepare meals from a suggestion menu charging only the cost of ingredients plus 20% service charge). However for guests who want to venture out to experience the shopping, restaurants and nightlife in town, this villa is a little remote (Seminyak, the popular entertainment hub, lies 23km south). We enjoyed walking around the sprawling grounds and whizzing from the villa to the hotel lobby in our golf buggy. The view of Tanah Lot temple from Cendana, one of the award-winning restaurants at the Pan Pacific Nirwana Bali resort, is magnificent – especially at sunset.

Ocean and Golf is an ideal base for a group of golfers or a golfer who wants to bring the family along. It is sensible for seniors – there are two downstairs bedrooms if steps are difficult to navigate. Whilst there is a twin bedroom for children upstairs and plenty of TV’s to go around. As long as they don’t wander onto the fairway, it is a very safe environment for kids, and the complimentary facilities at the Pan Pacific Nirwana Bali  resort will keep children busy for weeks.

Nirwana Golf Villas - Villa Arjuna

Nirwana Golf Villas - Villa Arjuna

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Seseh-Tanah Lot

If you are going on a golf holiday – and let’s face it you can’t beat the double win combination of not only Bali, but one of the best courses in Asia – living on site is such a privilege. The great thing about Villa Arjuna is that when you hole out on 18 in the humid tropical heat it’s only a five-minute drive back to the villa where lunch, cold beers, and a cool swimming pool await you.

There are no swimming beaches or independent fine-dining restaurants in the immediate vicinity, but the Nirwana Bali Golf Resort is a five-star facility with plenty of contemporary dining options including a fine-dining restaurant of its own. A spa and health club, tennis courts and a kids’ club are just some of the other attractions for families. Best of all, the giant resort pool with 54m hydro-slide is perfect for keeping the kids amused all day long (extra charges apply for use of resort facilities – see rates page). Players therefore shouldn’t feel at all guilty about turning their better halves and quarters into golf widows and orphans…they just won’t care!

Nirwana Golf Villas - Villa Senja

Nirwana Golf Villas - Villa Senja

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Seseh-Tanah Lot

Villa Senja is not a swanky hi-tech villa, but this is reflected in the price, which is especially good when you take into account the discounts that you are going to get on your golf rates. This is the original luxury Bali style; commonly found in villas and hotels that were built in the ‘90s.Things move fast in Bali, especially in the field of design, so the style looks a bit dated these days, and is sometimes referred to as ‘Bali for beginners’. Nevertheless, the architecture, thatched roofs, local stonework, interior design and furnishings remain both charming and very tropical. There are numerous benefits to being linked to the resort; apart from all the aforementioned facilities, there is an on-site generator (so you won’t get any of the power cuts, which are unfortunately rather common in Bali) and the water pressure in the showers is great (again, this is something that can sometimes be a bit hit and miss in Bali). The villa is a long way from the delicatessens of Seminyak (18km), so if you want meals created with gourmet ingredients you will need to let the staff know well in advance. Local specialties with fresh local ingredients are therefore the cook’s forte, and you can always enjoy fine dining at the resort.

Oazia Aqua

Oazia Aqua

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Umalas-Kerobokan

To find a two-bedroom villa with two living areas and such an abundance of space is rare indeed. To find one that also includes an onsite holistic spa, and a car and driver on call eight hours per day is a first for us.

During our short stay at Villa Oazia Aqua we spent an afternoon by the pool, followed by a massage in the spa; we sipped a sunset cocktail on the terrace, enjoyed a romantic alfresco dinner, an indulgent soak in the outdoor bathtub and a movie session on the wonderfully soft couches, and concluded that this was an oasis indeed. Everywhere we looked there was something to enjoy: antique statues and curios, beckoning sofas, towering trees, huge pots of bougainvillea, a lotus pond, rice terraces and billowing white curtains catching the breeze.

Oazia Orchid

Oazia Orchid

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Umalas-Kerobokan

Romance is the theme here, and Villa Oazia Orchid is totally geared up for couples looking for a romantic escape combined with some wonderful (and unusual) holistic spa treatments, either in the villa’s private garden or at the on-site Oazia Spa. We loved the eclectic shabby-chic design and furnishings, the Balinese stone carvings, pots of bougainvillea, the rice terrace view from the lofty gazebo, and the billowing white curtains catching the breeze. The swimming pool is bigger than usual for a one-bedroom villa and the walled garden is totally private. An oasis indeed!

The spa is a definite (if not defining) highlight – though bookings are essential as, although villa guests get preferential treatment (and a complimentary Balinese massage each), the spa is also open to the public. Another lovely treat is the complimentary bottle of wine that awaits each group of guests.

Oazia White

Oazia White

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Umalas-Kerobokan

One night at Villa Oazia White (such a beautifully simple moniker) just wasn’t long enough to really get to know her. That said, we still managed an afternoon on the sunbeds, some down-time in the balé, a movie session on the wonderfully soft couches, a convivial dinner party, a massage at the spa, an indulgent alfresco bath, some decent swim time, a leisurely breakfast and a full night of sleep … but it would have been nice to spread it out over a few long luxurious days.

Everywhere you look there is something to enjoy: antique statues, beckoning sofas, towering trees, flowering shrubs, fluttering butterflies and softly billowing drapes catching the breeze. And there aren’t many villas in Bali that have a river actually running through it. Perfect.

The onsite spa goes beyond the normal offerings of massage and nail treatments by delving into the holistic realms of the mystical with Shamanic Reiki, Cranio-Sacral Therapy, Aqua Flow Therapy, Balinese Shamanic Healing and much more. It has gained a reputation as one of the best in Bali.

We had a most memorable stay at Oazia Spa Villas: meals were prompt and delicious, the cushions were deep and the spa was heaven. All in all, a veritable ‘oasis’ if you will.

Villa Paloma

Villa Paloma

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

While the architectural design is attractive, it’s the décor and furnishings that really set Villa Paloma apart. The owners spend a lot of time here (when not rented) and it shows; not only does Paloma look fabulous, it is also a highly liveable and very comfortable space. The wonderful collection of antiques has been hand picked by the owners and reflects both a passion for the culture and artwork of Indonesia, and impeccable personal taste. Villa Paloma manages to be sumptuous without being over the top and feels more like a real home (albeit a supremely luxurious one) than a rental villa.

The true beauty is in the details, the intricate floral designs carved into the antique daybeds and cabinets, the framed tribal neck pieces, the decorative platters on the coffee tables, the frangipani scattered around the boulders by the pool. Thoughtful modern trimmings include crimson batik-edging on the pool towels, and thick soft bath towels stacked in attractive layers of red and white. Separate guest quarters make this villa good value, and ideal for groups or families who want a little privacy. The poolside lounge and casual all-weather dining setting framed by the picturesque garden and a big blue sky is perfect for alfresco meals.
