Villa Paloma

Villa Paloma

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

While the architectural design is attractive, it’s the décor and furnishings that really set Villa Paloma apart. The owners spend a lot of time here (when not rented) and it shows; not only does Paloma look fabulous, it is also a highly liveable and very comfortable space. The wonderful collection of antiques has been hand picked by the owners and reflects both a passion for the culture and artwork of Indonesia, and impeccable personal taste. Villa Paloma manages to be sumptuous without being over the top and feels more like a real home (albeit a supremely luxurious one) than a rental villa.

The true beauty is in the details, the intricate floral designs carved into the antique daybeds and cabinets, the framed tribal neck pieces, the decorative platters on the coffee tables, the frangipani scattered around the boulders by the pool. Thoughtful modern trimmings include crimson batik-edging on the pool towels, and thick soft bath towels stacked in attractive layers of red and white. Separate guest quarters make this villa good value, and ideal for groups or families who want a little privacy. The poolside lounge and casual all-weather dining setting framed by the picturesque garden and a big blue sky is perfect for alfresco meals.

Villa Pemutih

Villa Pemutih

Indonesia » Bali » Jimbaran - Bukit » The Bukit

It is easy to become a little blasé when it is your job to stay in paradise holiday homes and report back on the findings, but walking into the gardens of Villa Pemutih and seeing that breathtaking view was a rapturous moment, and we knew that the next 24 hours was going to be blissful.

And so it was straight to the pool and the sunloungers on the cliff’s edge with a cold drink, a good book and some sunscreen. A cleverly placed tree provides the shade, while the birds, the cicadas and the ocean provide the music. The sweet Balinese staff bought us cold drinks as the afternoon wore on, and we watched the sunset from the cliff side balé. In the evening, a delicious Balinese feast was cooked for us by the talented kitchen team. We then retired to the super-comfy studio room to blast ourselves senseless with a couple of movies on the villa’s explosive home theatre system.

When the tide is low, do make your way down the cliff to the exposed reef for a bit of beachcombing among the rock pools. The water is calm and none too deep making it a fun, and safe, option for a paddle in the sea. Kids will also love the size of the villa grounds, where they can run around to their hearts’ content, and they’ll enjoy watching the birds in the aviaries. There are numerous species of trees in the garden, including flamboyant, frangipani, coral tree, custard apple, orange flowering saraca trees, acacia, cactus, mango, teak and yellow coconut.

Pure Villa

Pure Villa

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

We felt like royalty staying at Pure Villa. The staff were exceptional, not only in taking care of our every whim but also in creating moods to suit the moment. The sheer white elegance of the villa became a canvas for mood lighting at night; tall silver candle holders placed by the staff along the length of the veranda added a warm glow to the evening and lights in the pool turned the water fluorescent with a rainbow of colors. A Bose speaker system installed at every corner of the property meant yoga on the lawn (mats provided), walks around the estate, massages and swimming were all enjoyed with a soundtrack to suit, and the villa iPod was loaded with all the genres we could ask for. With little light pollution, the night sky was amazing, and from the master bedroom we could watch the stars and the sunrise from the comfort of our bed; hello luxury!

With the in-house chef having exceptional skills in the preparation of Indonesian and Western food, we didn’t look much further than the villa for our meals; and all at only the cost of the shopping plus a 20% service charge. When we did venture out to discover the local sights, having two cars and two drivers on hand (8 hours per day inclusive of cost, petrol extra), and who knew the area so well, made things very easy.

Villa Putih Semer

Villa Putih Semer

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Umalas-Kerobokan

What we loved about Villa Putih Semer were the gorgeously chic interiors, which are of the ilk that you would expect to find featured in a classy interior design magazine. The owners are passionate about food, wine, music and books, and have made this the concept of their home. The cook showcased her skills by preparing her specialty, seafood curry, which proved to be fantastic. This sophisticated villa is a rural oasis on the edge of town, where we were able to totally relax and unwind within a beautiful, natural setting with a sneaky rice field view fringed by a small river, jungle vegetation and a bamboo thicket. The villa is so peaceful, so quiet, and so private. The car and driver (included in villa rate) is a great bonus, but we found it very hard to leave the premises. There are also some simple spas in the neighbourhood but, again, for those not wanting to venture out, staff can easily arrange for massages and spa treatments administered by professional therapists (on guest account) – to be carried out on the villa’s own massage bed.

Villa Sally

Villa Sally

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

When we stayed at Villa Sally two years ago we were blown away by its rural location.  Well, the area is still rural, but it’s getting more built up now, so some of the rice fields have given way to new buildings.  On the upside, there is a bit more to do in the area with some new cafes and restaurants all within walking distance.  The service of the staff was always good, but now it’s even more professional.  We were happy to see that the villa has been well maintained and is still very elegant.  In fact, now that it’s not quite so new and shiny, it feels more comfortable and homely.  There is a warmth to this elegant place that is enhanced both by the actual flames of the two fire bowls at the end of the pool, and the visual effects created by the light and swirling waters that cascade down the two water walls in the living room to resemble flames licking the walls. (Watch for this in the downstairs bathrooms as well, very romantic and guaranteed to kindle desire!)

Villa The Sanctuary

Villa The Sanctuary

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

If you imagine Bali purely as a sun, surf and sand-between-the-toes holiday destination, then The Sanctuary will give you a whole new perspective on this Island of the Gods. The Sanctuary is jungle, river, tall trees with buttressed roots: what marketing and advertising people describe as charming, heartfelt, grand, traditional, rural, and the very essence of old Bali. It really is a stunner of a villa, a real stunner. It’s so stunning we have to say it more than once.

The size of the place is beyond belief. Three hectares of river and jungle land with eight queen- and king-size beds and a bunkhouse for 20 youngsters, The Sanctuary is something that would suit very large extended families with hordes of kids. It only follows that weddings here would be stupendous with all that immaculate lawn space and the abundance of natural surroundings.

Our group of four could hardly take it all in, so after a quick look round we pretty swiftly decamped to the swimming pool terrace and billiard room where we spent the afternoon eating, drinking, pooling (wet and dry), and marvelling at the wildlife. We had one of the standard bedrooms (and by standard I mean pretty big and posh) and our friends lucked into the self-contained villa, which had its own pool and a massive bedroom with views right down onto the river gorge – a very wise choice, and one we were too slow to make. Still, with the distance between us, we were able to sing in the shower at the tops of our voices without the worry of judgement.
