Villa The Sanctuary

Villa The Sanctuary

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

If you imagine Bali purely as a sun, surf and sand-between-the-toes holiday destination, then The Sanctuary will give you a whole new perspective on this Island of the Gods. The Sanctuary is jungle, river, tall trees with buttressed roots: what marketing and advertising people describe as charming, heartfelt, grand, traditional, rural, and the very essence of old Bali. It really is a stunner of a villa, a real stunner. It’s so stunning we have to say it more than once.

The size of the place is beyond belief. Three hectares of river and jungle land with eight queen- and king-size beds and a bunkhouse for 20 youngsters, The Sanctuary is something that would suit very large extended families with hordes of kids. It only follows that weddings here would be stupendous with all that immaculate lawn space and the abundance of natural surroundings.

Our group of four could hardly take it all in, so after a quick look round we pretty swiftly decamped to the swimming pool terrace and billiard room where we spent the afternoon eating, drinking, pooling (wet and dry), and marvelling at the wildlife. We had one of the standard bedrooms (and by standard I mean pretty big and posh) and our friends lucked into the self-contained villa, which had its own pool and a massive bedroom with views right down onto the river gorge – a very wise choice, and one we were too slow to make. Still, with the distance between us, we were able to sing in the shower at the tops of our voices without the worry of judgement.

Villa Sesapi

Villa Sesapi

Indonesia » Bali » Tabanan

Upon arrival at Villa Sesapi, we were each offered a very welcome ice cold beer and ushered up to the open-sided living area where we could see the ocean and get a good sense of our surroundings. The journey out here is quite a long one (90 minutes from the airport) and it’s off the beaten tourist track, so the villa’s complimentary airport transfer is a definite advantage. As the sun lowered into the sea, freshly roasted peanuts and sautéed corn fritters with sweet chilli dipping sauce were brought to our table. These ‘on the house’ cocktail snacks became a much-anticipated nightly routine. In the early morning we set out to walk the black sand beach that has the consistency of fine powder, and watched the brightly painted fishing canoes come in from their overnight adventures. As it was still lobster season, the villa manager was able to track down two generous lobsters from a fisherman in front of the villa. The staff boiled and chilled the lobster meat, and prepared a delicious Thai-style salad for dinner that night. Villa Sesapi is more of a relaxing than action-packed holiday base, yet it’s easy enough to fill your time. By the second day our routine morphed into a nice rhythm, with a morning jog along the beach followed by a hard-earned breakfast of bacon and eggs while catching up on the news in front of the TV; then swimming in the pool and reading or napping on one of the day beds, a walk to the Alila for lunch and a spa treatment, and back to the villa in time for our sunset cocktail ritual. The layout here works well for families travelling with grandparents and young children who will enjoy the ground floor rooms, leaving mom and dad with the master suite upstairs – or for families with teenagers, who will want to take over the upstairs bedroom-media room combination. Villa Sesapi is the perfect entry villa for families who want to experience a less visited Bali yet one that provides all the comforts of home.

The Shanti Residence

The Shanti Residence

Indonesia » Bali » Nusa Dua

We’d heard some pretty tasty things about The Shanti Residence, so we arrived with great expectations. And this is what we found: the beds were soft, the sky was blue, the sun warm and the hospitality generous. After a delicious night’s sleep in a regal bed, followed by a sumptuous breakfast, the pool and its sun loungers were about as far as we managed to get for the lion’s share of the day. The staff were professional and, more importantly, readily on hand to bring us cold drinks, lunch and complimentary afternoon tea as we lay there soaking up the sounds of birdlife and views of the distant horizon. That night the kitchen produced a particularly tasty meal for us, which left us fit to bursting. Yes, cloaked in privacy and surrounded by greenery, this stunning villa nigh on forces total relaxation from its guests. Overlooking the sea, far, far away from the crowds, with three pools, a home cinema, superb staff and a tantalising menu of foods and wines, The Shanti Residence requires no leaving. So, bring your favourite books, toys, sunscreen and lover, and get ready for the stay of stays.

Villa Tanju Bali

Villa Tanju Bali

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Seseh-Tanah Lot

Staying at Tanju is a wonderful experience. The journey from airport to villa took us past some delightfully scenic rice terraces and through typical Balinese villages, keeping the beach hidden until the last moment when the road opens up to reveal a stunning panorama. Honeymooners and romance seekers will feel the magic: floating petals in a sunken bath; walks on the beach or snuggling up on a daybed to watch the sunset, this is your private patch of paradise. With plenty of space and ample creature comforts to keep everyone happy, Tanju will equally captivate families. We found that life slipped easily into a blissful rhythm: a morning walk on the beach (with stunning views to Bali’s majestic Mount Agung volcano) before a breakfast of fresh tropical fruits or a cooked selection of our choice; pool time until a relaxed lunch, then a siesta before more pool time or, for the energetic, a game of tennis at the villa or golf at the world class Nirwana course fifteen minutes’ drive away. Then it was time for drinks to accompany the daily sunset spectacular, then showers and the ritual application of after sun as we waited for the call of the dinner gong. Fresh grilled fish and seafood, wonderful spicy Asian salads and soups, all simply, deliciously prepared and presented. Children drift upstairs to doze in front of a DVD while adults sit chatting to the sound of the waves before another night of peaceful sleep, happy in the knowledge that tomorrow heralds another perfect Bali day.

The Edge

The Edge

Indonesia » Bali » Jimbaran - Bukit » The Bukit

Oh, yeah baby, this is what we’re talking about. The edge is all that and more as far as we are concerned, and we were a very happy couple to be able to experience it: massive, versatile and staffed to the hilt. Guests can remain as horizontal as the horizon – lazing on sunbeds with to-die-for views by day and hunkering down in one of the eight leather lay-z-boy chairs in the home cinema with rolling surround-sound and a stack of your favourite blockbusters by night.

Facilities? We’ll give you facilities. Apart from the home cinema, there’s a cigar smoking area in the wine cellar, a huge dedicated spa, a flat-screen TV in every room and, just quietly, a bowling alley is in the planning. It doesn’t stop there though; the three and five-bedroom villas have two pools each in addition to the communal pool. Kids will be in heaven with their dedicated playroom, which has slides, murals, games, books and not one but two games systems with a TV for each – could this concept of ‘no sharing’ perhaps be the secret to successful parenting?

The Cliff at The Edge

The Cliff at The Edge

Indonesia » Bali » Jimbaran - Bukit » The Bukit

From the top-notch luxury, state-of-the-art facilities, impeccable service, privacy, and – of course – the view, everything about The Cliff (and indeed The edge) proved to be perfect. The dedicated 24-hour personal butlers have all undergone extensive training at Magnum, one of the foremost butler training schools in the world. Whether it was a drink or a sandwich, an extension cable or an adaptor, the butlers anticipated our every need, yet they were so discreet we hardly noticed they were there. Be sure to make at least one visit to the amazing spa: the floor is covered in three inches of water and the treatment beds seem to float between the sea and the sky behind the billowing white curtains that surround it.

The Mood at The Edge

The Mood at The Edge

Indonesia » Bali » Jimbaran - Bukit » The Bukit

One night in The Mood was definitely not enough, and we wished we could have stayed longer. Although we could see the benefits of the villa for a couple of couples or friends, or even a small family, we were in our element as a solo couple taking advantage of The Mood’s good-mood-creating ambiance. We woke to views of the ocean; we swam au naturel in the pool – the staff are super-discreet – we lunched on fine foods and wines; we were pampered in the spa; we soaked up the rays until the sun was low, and then headed down to the cliff-side communal restaurant for a sundowner and a gourmet meal under the stars. Ahhh… Needless to say, we were definitely in the mood.

The View at The edge

The View at The edge

Indonesia » Bali » Jimbaran - Bukit » The Bukit

Oh, how we loved this villa! There is something magical about lying on a sun lounger, on a cliff so high above the pounding waves that oxygen might become necessary, with a cold drink in your hand, a liberal coating of sunscreen on your skin and, best of all, nothing whatsoever on your agenda. This is the kind of view that inspires much of the world’s most beautiful poetry: so mesmerising that magazines may well remain unread.

When you do come down to earth, take the time to have a spa treatment in the jaw-dropping facility – the floor is covered in three inches of water and the treatment beds seem to float between the sea and the sky behind the billowing white curtains that surround it.

The service was impeccable and the food amazing, just what you might expect from highly trained professionals. Our Magnum-trained butlers were quick to spot an empty glass and could always sense a hungry tummy. Breakfasting on the shady terrace was a wonderful way to start the day: inspiring us to take on all the great things we’ve always wanted to do. Rather a shame, perhaps, that in the end we opted just to lie on the sun loungers gaze at the ocean and work on the suntan.

Villa Tukad Pangi

Villa Tukad Pangi

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

This villa is chic and contemporary in style, whilst also oozing Balinese charm in its design and landscaping – the best of both worlds. The owner has obviously brought in top architects, landscape and interior designers to help realise his dream. The riverside location is enchanting, perhaps a little out of the way for some but well worth the extra few minutes travel time.

Villa Tukad Pangi is very private and peaceful and perfect for a retreat – both romantic or for a small group. The villa is a great base for families with older children, but it’s not ideal for the very young as there are no railings separating the veranda from a drop to the riverside. It is not perfect for seniors either as the pools could be difficult to get in and out of, and there are several steps down to the lower level.

There are plenty of spots to relax, read a book or watch a movie, so groups would not get on top of each other when the villa is at full capacity. It’s a fabulous place for a cocktail or dinner party with the pools and garden lit up romantically at night. The kitchen is fit to cater for a banquet … and the chef will happily oblige. We enjoyed some excellent meals at Villa Tukad Pangi and the team of amiable staff were amongst the best we have experienced in Bali. A stay at Villa Tukad Pangi is akin to having a five-star retreat all to yourself, and comes highly recommended. It was nice to be greeted by the same familiar faces when we came back to the villa after three years. Nothing has changed in this sleepy rural riverside locale except perhaps the trees getting a little taller. Still such a beautiful retreat and one we were happy to return to. The rate now includes a car and driver for eight hours a day (excluding petrol), which makes the villa’s remote location less of an issue.
