We had a great stay in Seseh Beach Villa II and found everything to be nigh on perfect with all the modern comforts of home mixed with all the lazy pleasures of a tropical holiday. It was incredibly peaceful and quiet with lots of sunshine and swimming by day, while by night we enjoyed big-screen movie sessions, long leisurely dinners and the sounds of the waves lulling us to sleep in our super-soft beds.

After spending much of the day beside the pool, sunset proved to be the best time to head down to the beach for a wander along the sands and a paddle in the surf. There are no lifeguards here and the water can be a bit rough, so swimming is not recommended.

In the evenings, it was fun to gather around our own private bar for a pre-dinner drink. The chef here is a very talented man, and the Balinese and Indonesian specialties that came out of his kitchen were superb. Getting out of our incredibly comfortable bed in the morning was made easy in the knowledge that a hearty breakfast would soon be on the table.

Villa Simona Oasis

Villa Simona Oasis is a delightful villa in a lovely peaceful location. Clearly the original owner was as passionate about his villa as he was about his wife to whom the villa was a gift. The level of detail and finish throughout the property is excellent. Equally passionate is the villa manager, who is always keen to make sure his guests have a good stay. He speaks excellent English which makes up for the lack of English from one or two of the other staff.

The food we were served was nicely presented in the open-sided living/dining room – a great place from which to admire the villa grounds. The pool is a delight and the sunken garden in front is perfect for a party or barbecue. The bedrooms are very generous and the highlight for us was the huge ensuite garden bathrooms, particularly the master room, which is outstandingly romantic. A great villa for parties, groups, families and yoga retreats.

Sira Beach House

This is a great villa for families or groups of friends, with loads of space, private places to escape and plenty of entertainment for all ages. The pairing of the six bedrooms means that three families can easily escape from each other in their own separate areas. During our visit to the villa the staff surprised us by setting up a sunset table for two on the sand, within a circle of candles and flaming torches, to create a most romantic feast of local dishes. Only after the sun went down did we realise that the ‘circle’ was actually a heart shape! The chef has created a great menu and can turn his hand to anything but loves to indulge his guests with Lombok specialties. Due to the remoteness of the area, you’ll be asked to order your first meal and any special requests in advance of your arrival. The kitchen will operate on a menu or grocery system according to your preferences.

Fully self-contained, we didn’t leave the confines of the villa grounds except to swim in the ocean. The electronic beeper that we were given to summon the staff at anytime was a great idea (and necessary due to the size of the place). No one claims that this villa is 100% environmentally sustainable but great care has been taken in the design to be as eco-friendly as possible. We were very aware that, although were indulging in six-star luxury, we were having a low impact – the pool is chemical free, our long showers and baths were solar heated and the water we were using was being recycled to nurture the organic gardens.

Villa Hamsa

This stunning contemporary villa, with its sensational setting, is as far south as you can get in Bali. All that lies between Villa Hamsa and Australia is a lot of glittering ocean!

We absolutely loved the master bedroom pavilion, which has the best views from its enormous deck – our favourite hang-out where we lazed away many an hour, mesmerised by the waves gently rolling in some 80 metres below. (At certain times of the year, whales have been spotted from these cliffs; we noticed the occasional kayaker from Pandawa beach, and at night tracked spear fishermen by their lights flashing in the shallows). The ocean view from our insanely sized 2.4-metre bed was just as amazing – and thanks to floor-to-ceiling doors opening straight onto the pool; we could jump in the deep end just paces from our bed. (Sleepwalkers be warned: close those doors at night!)

In the evening the chef prepared a delicious dinner for us that was more than a match for Bali’s celebrity restaurants. Given the villa’s semi-remote setting – definitely no restaurants within running distance – in-villa food commands centre-stage, and this highly talented chef certainly made sure we happily stayed put rather than head out to the seafood restaurants of Jimbaran or Nusa Dua!

Though this is a four-bedroom villa that can accommodate up to 10, its layout is such that it would equally suit a couple seeking extra privacy and space; they would be very comfortable here without feeling they were rattling around, as the other three bedrooms are hidden out of sight below the pool and master pavilion – you hardly notice them.

Villa Soham

This is a stunning contemporary villa! And its cliff-top location is sensational – as far south as is possible in Bali; next landfall is Australia! We spent the day basking in the incredible ocean vista from the vast infinity pool and the cliff-edge entertainment balé, watching the waves roll in 80 metres below. We admired the fabulously equipped gym (shared with Villa Hamsa) – there are some serious weights in there – but decided that we were more in the mood for the sauna and steam room. We loved the villa’s clean modern lines softened by some choice ornamental pieces – I admit I coveted the canoe decorating a two-storey high wall; now, but where would I put it at home?

In the evening we enjoyed an amazing Japanese dinner prepared for us by the highly talented chef. The butlers set up a candle-lit table on the deck for us and we feasted on tuna tataki with mango salsa, spinach goma with sesame dressing, and seafood hotpot – all absolutely delicious! And after squeezing in a feather-light green tea crème brûlée, we happily retired to our insanely wide 2.4-metre bed – by far the largest I’ve ever slept in; you’ll need to use GPS to meet your partner in the middle!

With its multiple living areas and large private bedrooms, we think this is the perfect destination villa for high-living friends – there’s so much space to entertain. And there’s much to attract families with older children (though younger ones would have to be supervised carefully).

Sungai Tinggi Beach Villa

Sungai Tinggi Beach Villa lies right beside Pererenan surf beach, 10 kilometres north of the downtown Seminyak beach scene, so it‘s very private, very secluded and very much all yours. An organic boundary of trees and shrubs, instead of the usual high stone walls, makes a pleasant change, and there is plenty of space, greenery, and wide open vistas of the ocean.

Our stay at this villa was blissful. We enjoyed the comfortable informality, not only of the staff but also the layout of the villa and garden. The staff were keen to please; they indulged us with delicious home-cooked goodies, freshly squeezed tropical fruit juices and service that came from their hearts. The swimming pool is free-form and fun but also long (and deep) enough to do as many laps as you deem appropriate. We lazed in the garden balé and hung out poolside until just before sunset, when we headed upstairs to have a couple of beers and a game of pool in the open air lounge. The west coast of Bali is renowned for its magnificent sunsets, and this lounge has to be one of the best places to watch it happen.

Even if you’re not really into the spiritual concept, and you don’t understand much about chakras, mandala thankas, crystals and healing circles, you will still appreciate the beautiful close-to-nature setting, the sight and sound of the sea, the romantic architecture and the peaceful ambiance.
