Taman Ahimsa

Taman Ahimsa

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Seseh-Tanah Lot

If you’re looking for nightlife and shopping, Taman Ahimsa is probably not the villa for you, but if you want to retreat from the world, awaken your soul, practice yoga and meditation, eat healthy food and experience therapeutic massages, this transformative place will inspire you more than you ever imagined possible. Even if you’re not really into the spiritual concept, and you don’t understand much about chakras, mandala thankas, crystals and healing circles, you will still appreciate the beautiful close-to-nature setting, the sight and sound of the sea, the romantic architecture and the peaceful ambiance.

Although the villa promotes the holistic concept, you don’t have to be on a spiritual retreat to come here; but who knows, you might just be inspired to experience something new. The gardens and interiors are fun to explore too, in every room we found a traditional Balinese instrument, an extraordinary crystal or an antique, or a funky lamp or table. Floors and doors are made from old teak, ironwood and two-toned tamarind wood, which has been recycled from boats and old buildings. Please note the villa has a no smoking policy.

Taman Ahimsa is managed by Fivelements, a company that specialises in holistic healing retreats, centred at Puri Ahimsa, 20km away. For a truly amazing experience arrange for the villa’s driver to take you to Fivelements Puri Ahimsa for a holistic treatment performed by an authentic Balinese healer.

Umah Daun

Umah Daun

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Umalas-Kerobokan

Seriously spacious, perfectly configured and delightfully uncluttered, Umah Daun was an absolute pleasure to stay in.  The gentle curves of the building mimic the contours of the rice terraces, and the ponds that wrap around the ground floor, coupled with the glass doors that fold right back, made us feel like we were part of the scene rather than just looking at it.

Villas of this size can be a little austere and overwhelming, but there is enough colour in the décor and verdant landscape at Umah Daun to make it feel warm and intimate.  Our favourite design feature was the beautifully carved antique door shutters coloured in shades of teal and turquoise, which make stunning features on the white walls, as well as lovely bed heads in the childrens’ rooms.  Bedrooms are large and very comfortable and there are plenty of daybeds and sofas piled high with plump cushions that provide comfortable vantage points for soaking up the views and the peaceful ambiance.  It is such a lovely space, and the staff took such good care of us, that we didn’t really feel the need to go anywhere, but it was good to know that both the beach and Seminyak were easy to reach should we fancy a sunset walk or a meal out.

Villa Zelie

Villa Zelie

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

We are no strangers to beautiful villas, but Villa Zelie is definitely one of our favourites, and we were happy to forget the real world as we immersed ourselves in this enchanted cocoon of sumptuous comfort and superlative service.

In these days of modern minimalism we relished the chance to bask in pure, unabashed old-world glory. Every glance and every turn was greeted with a slice of Indonesian history; from the delicate floral motifs hand-carved on wood, to tribal shell-encrusted neck pieces fastening back drapes, nightstands adorned with feather headdresses and corners filled with stone statues. And it wasn’t just the quality of the antiques, but also their thoughtful placement and display, which made it abundantly clear that the owner has impeccable taste and style.

The use of natural woods and stone accentuated by richly hued textiles in the bedrooms creates warmth and cosiness – despite the generous size of the property, and our bedroom gladak felt like something straight out of a fairy tale. Ensuite bathrooms were wonderfully atmospheric with vanities carved into stone and petrified wood, and pretty courtyard gardens. Fabulous lighting throughout the property added an enchanting allure to evenings, when all was blissfully quiet but for the faint hum of cicadas and the distant sound of the waves,

The pool was absolutely stunning, long enough for swimming lengths, and perfectly situated in the middle of the property to soak up 360-degree panoramas of the ornate buildings framed by elegant travellers palms and a deep blue sky.

Zelie is more than just a villa; it’s an experience – and one that we never wanted to end!

Villa Arika

Villa Arika

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

For those who love the ocean (like us), there are few experiences that can match staying right on the beach – especially in a spacious and luxurious tropical villa – so Villa Arika definitely ticked all our boxes. The views are quintessential Bali; everything we expected and more – especially from the master bedroom, which has a lovely private deck. With the huge lawns, the rugged coastline in both directions, and the ocean stretching to the horizon, there is a fabulous feeling of space and openness. Landscaping is thoughtful, with rounded garden beds that mimic the curves of the shore and are filled with low shrubs that complement, rather than distract from the ocean views.

We quickly adapted to the rhythms of nature – lounging by the pool, exploring rock pools on the beach exposed at low tide, languishing in the flamboyant sunsets. Evenings had their own gentle allure with the soft glow of candles and hurricane lanterns. Dinners at the wonderful marble dining table were particularly memorable, surrounded by magically lit lily ponds. Pererenan is delightfully sleepy and serene, and most of the time we were really happy just to chill at the villa and relax, but it was great to have a driver on hand  when we managed to tear ourselves away.

Villa Asli

Villa Asli

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

This is such a stunning villa! We’re suckers for character, so we really did love everything about Villa Asli. Not only do the gorgeous timber joglos exude such delicious charm in all their aging, creaking, antique-filled glory (and provide a rare [for Bali] sense of history), but the gentle natures of the staff also put us superbly at ease. Asli means ‘genuine’ and everything in this villa – from the exquisite collection of antiques to the staff themselves were certainly positive reflectors of this title.  Dressed in their traditional uniform, the staff were always a warm and efficient presence around the house. The chef was most definitely a highlight of the team as he whipped up an excellent range of dishes based upon an extensive menu and also according to our own suggestions. All the meals we had were thoroughly enjoyed, and since all food and drink was charged at cost price (and daily breakfast is included in the rate), we thought it was surprisingly good value and hardly worth eating out, despite the lure of nearby Seminyak.

We were spoiled by the high level of comfort and the spaciousness of our bedroom, but its terrace was our favourite place of all. We loved the bathrooms too – the Sumatran gladak had a particularly jungle-like bathtub setting, which was enhanced magically by long lanterns night. The lighting throughout the villa is definitely worth a mention as it set off the chocolatey timberwork a treat.

Astika Toyaning

Astika Toyaning

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

In spite of the ‘high-design’ tendencies that characterise the simplicity and style of Astika Toyaning, we didn’t feel that it’s a look-but-don’t-touch kind of place. To the contrary, it’s very much the kind of space that finds you taking a deep breath and feeling like you’ve landed in the lap of peace and relaxation.

The dining area, with its gorgeous wooden feasting table, just begs for long lunches followed by satiated snoozes followed by long dinners followed by satiated snoozes… you get the picture.  In fact, the use of wood throughout the villa adds beauty to the simplest of spaces and objects (who knew a bathroom basin could be such an object of lust and envy?) while the effective and dramatic use of red adds a certain modern glamour to the décor. Astika Toyaning’s 1600 square metres of space, give all guests plenty of breathing room, and when you add to this the proximity of water – the river, the pool, the water feature – you’ve got a villa tailor-made for the ultimate in relaxing holidays.

Villa Azzalea

Villa Azzalea

Indonesia » Bali » Jimbaran - Bukit » Jimbaran

The unique interior décor of Villa Azzalea definitely gives it lots of character: we felt as if we’d been transported onto the set of a sultry Moorish movie, or perhaps a Bollywood blockbuster. Despite this exoticism however, the villa still felt very homely and was just the right size for families and small groups looking to be close to Jimbaran Beach. Although it does have three bedrooms, Azzalea is also a romantic hideaway for couples with its evocative dusky colour scheme and tumbling tropical garden – azaleas (after which the villa is named) are exotic signifiers of passion after all. The master bedroom is a huge boudoir set in the main house and since the two twins are set back in a separate building it wouldn’t feel as if you were drowning in space if they weren’t used.

A small staff team looked after the house, and friendly Made made us a lovely tropical breakfast each morning. He struggled a little with his English but since we only made simple requests this wasn’t a problem. Sister-property Villa Balquisse is up the road and this ten-bedroom hotel is the headquarters of all villa management operations so staff will come down to meet you and can easily be called upon if you have any specific requests – they are very helpful. There’s also the Mediterranean Asam Garam restaurant here (a driver can come and pick you up from the villa or deliver dishes to you) and, for a full pampering, the Henna Spa. Both are decorated in Zohra Boukhari’s iconic Moorish–Oriental style. If you’d like your taste buds pampering too, you can arrange for a private chef for just US$20 a day.
