Villa Bukit Naga is one of the most delightful villas we have seen in Bali. The architect and owners have created a real gem in total sympathy with the surroundings. Tucked away overlooking a quiet river valley some 20-minutes’ drive from Ubud, the location is nothing short of spectacular. Spread over three buildings the rooms are all superb – we particularly liked the annex room with its cute garden bathroom and private little terrace. The plunge pool attched to the visitors lodge is also very special. Every room has been beautifully thought out with nice touches but it is not a delicate museum, so families with kids need not feel on edge. The staff are also outstanding, many having worked at the villa since it opened in 2002. We found Parta, the Villa Manager, a genuine delight who could not have been more helpful. Highly recommended as much for those looking for a dignified place for a pampered celebration, as for a yoga or health retreat or an extended family holiday in a fabulous location.

Highlights

Choosing one highlight is quite difficult as there are so many. The architect has done a fabulous job in blending the villa’s three buildings into a gorgeous setting on the edge of a river gorge. As a result all the rooms enjoy wonderful views over the valley and the river below. Perhaps the ultimate success is the infinity pool which is carved into the valley side. It would also be unfair not to mention the staff. As we said, choosing one highlight is not easy.

Surprises

The main surprise is trying to find the place – we were pleased to have a driver! Once there, you will be very aware that you are in a remote countryside location. Do expect the odd frog to croak, cockerel to rise early and gecko to find a way into your room. Do also note the villa is isolated but does have two cars for local journeys. The nearest ‘action’ is in Ubud,12 km away, which, via the winding but very picturesque country roads takes a good 25 minutes.

Villa Bukit Naga is a truly unique place to relax and soak in the surrounding culture. The staff were all so accommodating of our needs and very friendly. I would recommend a stay at Villa Bukit Naga to anyone, and will definitely be back.
