Built in 2009, Villa M is a lovely townhouse villa. Compared with many villas I have seen, it is full of charm and character but also loaded with modern conveniences. In addition it has the dual benefits of being right on the beach as well as being at the quiet end of Fisherman’s Village (not that there is a noisy end) with its popular street of restaurants and bars. The Freshly painted stark white walls, well maintained furniture and fixtures looked striking which with all the memorabilia gives a real pleasant colonial touch. It’s a house I would love to stay in but not own – keeping all the white clean must be a nightmare! That said the two staff (manager and cleaner/waitress) did an excellent job whilst we were there. Note the staff are on from 8am until 5pm unless needed longer and the villa manager is shared with another villa up the road. I would definitely recommend getting a chef (extra charge) for at least a couple of nights as the food we had was exquisitely done, both Western and Asian.

Highlights

Location, location, location – the age old adage is definitely true here. Villa M benefits from stunning views over the bay, a pleasant beachside setting (although it is not the best beach in Koh Samui) and is a short walk from what is arguably Koh Samui’s more pleasant street of restaurants and boutiques. It makes a great compromise for families or groups of friends. I personally enjoyed sitting on the first floor balcony watching the boats plying their way, or on the balcony above the street, which is bustles with life every Friday for the Walking Street market. Portable iPod speakers mean you can take your music with you wherever you want to relax, inside or out.

Surprises

Thailand’s beaches are all public and the beach Villa M on is no exception – this means there is a certain amount of people walking along the beach (the local government recently added solar powered beach lamps right in front of Villa M, but the light doesn't infringe on the stay) which means a little less privacy and being a little more careful with valuables around the small pool and lawn. Do not get the impression it is crowded – it is certainly not, but one or two people will stroll past every now and then. Some people will be disappointed not to have TVs in the bedrooms but with two separate TV areas on separate floors I doubt this will trouble most.
