Panacea Retreat - Avasara Residence

Panacea Retreat - Avasara Residence

Thailand » Koh Samui » Bophut

From the moment we arrived at Avasara Residence and were greeted by warm smiles, welcome drink, cool towel and garland of flowers, we began to unwind.  We particularly enjoyed our daily yoga session with an experienced teacher, who knew our individual strengths and limits right away – a great perk! Although we were already feeling pretty relaxed by now, our massages were the icing on the cake!

The kitchen team really know their stuff at Panacea Retreat.  The dishes we ordered from the a la carte menu were fresh, with an emphasis on quality ingredients and there was a good selection of meat, seafood, poultry, vegetarian and healthy options, as well as local favourites.  Meals other than breakfast are prepared in the estate’s professional kitchen, and special orders, eg barbecues, can be discussed with your villa host.  Breakfast is no simple affair, with the chef’s baking skills in evidence once again.  We recommend the freshly made yoghurt pots, with granola and fruit puree, and some avocado, smoked salmon, cold cuts or cheese to accompany your toast … or perhaps a full cooked breakfast if you have room?  Throughout the day, freshly brewed coffee and pots of tea were on offer, with the chef’s biscotti and cookies to keep us sustained until our next delicious meal.

The villa’s layout meant that we found it easy to both come together as a group, or retreat to the calmness of our bedrooms if we wanted some quiet time.  High-pressure rain showers were most enjoyable to freshen up before dinner, and guests in the master suite can also enjoy the luxury of a deep terrazzo bathtub.  We found the staff to be attentive, always there when we wanted a drink, yet unobtrusive, allowing us to enjoy the luxuries and surroundings of the villa undisturbed.

Panacea Retreat - Praana Residence

Panacea Retreat - Praana Residence

Thailand » Koh Samui » Bophut

From the moment we arrived at Panacea Retreat and were greeted by warm smiles, a welcome drink, cool towel and garland of flowers, we began to unwind. We particularly enjoyed our daily yoga session with an experienced teacher, who knew our individual strengths and limits right away – a great perk! Although we were feeling pretty relaxed by this time, we were still pleased to take advantage the in-villa massage. Add the private Muay Thai instructor and tennis coach into the mix, and it was hard not to feel a little indulgent.

As much as the lovely island of Samui has to offer, the extraordinary entertainment and leisure facilities at Praana Residence were too good to leave. After a morning of sport, an afternoon of relaxation by the pool and a fun evening of music, dance and karaoke in the club, we stretched out in the home cinema for a midnight movie and then retired to our luxurious bedroom suites. A perfect day!

The kitchen team really know their stuff too. There’s an emphasis on quality ingredients and a good selection of dishes, and we thoroughly enjoyed all the meals we ordered from the a la carte menu. Meals other than breakfast are prepared in the estate’s professional kitchen, and special orders such as barbecues can be discussed with your villa host. Breakfast (which is included in the rate) is no simple affair. Try the freshly made yoghurt pots, with granola and fresh fruit puree, and some avocado, smoked salmon, cold cuts or cheese to accompany your toast … or perhaps a full cooked breakfast if you have room?  Throughout the day, freshly brewed coffee and pots of tea were on offer, with the chef’s biscotti and cookies to keep us sustained until our next delicious meal.

The villa’s layout made it easy to socialise as a group or enjoy quiet ‘me’ time when it suited. We found the staff to be attentive yet unobtrusive, allowing us to enjoy the luxuries and surroundings of the villa undisturbed.

Suralai

Suralai

Thailand » Koh Samui » Bophut

Villa Suralai is an exquisite villa. The views are superb – each of the bedrooms has full-length glass doors and excellent terraces. The swimming pool is fantastic (despite some minor calcification) with comfy sun loungers and the gazebo is a great place to relax and escape the heat of the day. The finish and thought which have gone into the villa makes it one of the best on Koh Samui although it would be nice to see a bit more colour and homely warm in the décor. During our stay, the villa manager was charming, knowledgeable and helpful to the extreme, more than making up for the simple English of the other staff. The chef turned out some awesome Thai meals and we understand he can produce a reasonable selection of western dishes too – do mention how hot you like your food though, Thais do like their spices! (Note the management company have a team of chefs so they do rotate a bit, all the chefs we used were excellent.) Don’t bother with shopping and provisioning – let the chef do it, you will pay 30% for the handling cost plus a government tax but it keeps you out of the supermarket which has to be a good thing while on holiday. An excellent villa for a group or family (see surprises), a superb party or wedding pad or perfect for a corporate retreat.

Villa Kya

Villa Kya

Thailand » Koh Samui » Bophut

There’s a freshness and brightness about Villa Kya that’s quite exhilarating. Despite being situated so obviously high above the ocean waves, the villa almost has the feel of a luxury yacht.  We put it down to the gleaming white surfaces, the gently curved design that follows the contours of the hillside, the sail-like roof and, perhaps most of all, the stunningly positioned ‘Moon Terrace’, which rivals the most luxurious of top decks.

There is a tremendous choice of places to relax here.  Inside, our top marks went to the breakfast bar in the kitchen – what a great place to sip a coffee and start the day!  Outside, it was tougher to chose a winner:  On a lounger by the pool? On a bar stool in the pool? Enjoying a quiet read in the shade of the lazing lounge? Sipping a sundowner on the Moon Terrace?  They’re all up there, and they all have the most amazing views to boot.

Bedrooms are simply, stylishly and romantically furnished (especially the master) and beds are very comfortable.  There may not be acres of space in the guest rooms, but the views through the wide glass doors more than make up for that.  The villa only opened for business in August 2012 and everything is new and sparkling. The staff are cheerful and obliging and the owner/managers couldn’t be more helpful.  We highly recommend sampling the talented Khun Kiat’s pomelo salad and Thai chicken curry. Delicious!

Villa M

Villa M

Thailand » Koh Samui » Bophut

Built in 2009, Villa M is a lovely townhouse villa. Compared with many villas I have seen, it is full of charm and character but also loaded with modern conveniences. In addition it has the dual benefits of being right on the beach as well as being at the quiet end of Fisherman’s Village (not that there is a noisy end) with its popular street of restaurants and bars. The Freshly painted stark white walls, well maintained furniture and fixtures looked striking which with all the memorabilia gives a real pleasant colonial touch. It’s a house I would love to stay in but not own – keeping all the white clean must be a nightmare! That said the two staff (manager and cleaner/waitress) did an excellent job whilst we were there. Note the staff are on from 8am until 5pm unless needed longer and the villa manager is shared with another villa up the road. I would definitely recommend getting a chef (extra charge) for at least a couple of nights as the food we had was exquisitely done, both Western and Asian.
