Villa Kawan

Villa Kawan

Indonesia » Bali » Tabanan

Oh the serenity! We were lucky enough to be staying at Villa Kawan (formerly Villa Asmara No. 2) during one of the many rice harvests and got to see the farmers and sharecroppers threshing and bagging the rice. They were more than happy to pose for a few photos. We spent a contented couple of hours walking through the fields along the beach, happy-snapping rural life as we went. A car is essential, and a driver highly recommended. The villa owner has a good relationship with the chap who collects you from the airport (transfers are extra), and he will supply this service at a reasonable daily price. The money you save on the super-reasonable villa rates will more than make up for the expense. We made sure we were well-provisioned with food for our stay by doing our grocery shopping in Seminyak in advance, (and we recommend that you do the same), and we then cooked our own meals without any problems. However, the villa manager-cum-butler, Jana, is very willing to help you with the grocery shopping, but bear in mind she will have to travel a long way to find imported or gourmet items, so allow a good hour or more for this service. Although the villa is marketed as self-catering, Jana will happily prepare your breakfast and lunch. Additionally, she can cook your dinner (for an extra charge as it would be outside her 9am – 4pm working hours). Make sure you bring a lot of reading (or writing) material because you will definitely have the time and inclination to finish at least three books and a year subscription’s worth of magazines during a one-week stay. Another major recommendation is to head out for a ride on one of the villa’s two (very tasty-looking) mountain bikes to explore the local countryside. Remember to take a copy of the villa’s business card in case you get lost in this rural paradise and need help getting back in time for sundowners in the rooftop gazebo. Priceless.

Kembang Desa Estate

Kembang Desa Estate

Indonesia » Bali » Tabanan

If you’re into nightlife, shopping and eating out in fancy restaurants, then Kembang Desa Villas are not for you, but if you love the great outdoors, the sight and sound of the ocean, the mountains and rural local life, you will love them… we certainly do; they are among our favourite villas in Bali.

Returning to the villa after a long walk along the beach one evening, a delicious meal awaited us – nothing gourmet, just honest, well-prepared food. The cook produces meals from a tasty repertoire of Balinese / Indonesian / International dishes that hit the spot. We were also delighted by the villa’s collection of hundreds of digital movies – all without the evil scratch demon that can ruin the last five minutes of the most-engrossing films!

Make sure you wake up early in the morning when the air and sky are at their most calm and be rewarded with a mountain vista that will leave you speechless. We felt so privileged to stay in this magnificent location, not many visitors get to venture this far, so it really is a rare pleasure and an experience that will stay with us forever.

Kembang Desa Villas - Villa Moon (1BR)

Kembang Desa Villas - Villa Moon (1BR)

Indonesia » Bali » Tabanan

A simple one-bedroom villa up above the waves on a deserted beach in Bali? Villa Moon at Kembang Desa has got to be one of the most romantic villas we have ever seen. Did we say simple? Aesthetically it’s all about the views, but there are plenty of creature comforts here to keep you soft, warm, and happy. It’s an elegant place designed for one thing and one thing only: being together with your beloved. Make sure you make the most of your honeymoon stay: a return visit would still be easy but you might be renting the two-bedroom villa next door and saying farewell to those lie-ins!

Kembang Desa Villas - Villa Sunset (6BR)

Kembang Desa Villas - Villa Sunset (6BR)

Indonesia » Bali » Tabanan

Of the four dwellings at Kembang Desa Villas this is the granddaddy family villa of them all and will definitely please the needs of any group, big or small. The views facing the ocean and the land are (almost) indescribably sublime with the power of the ocean to the front and the fecund bounty of the green rice bowl behind. We went for a long walk down the beach in the late afternoon and checked out temples and rock pools and a most glorious sunset.

When we got back to the villa a delicious meal awaited – nothing gourmet, just honest, well-prepared food. Mandalay Hideaway

Mandalay Hideaway

Indonesia » Bali » Tabanan

How many times have you been bamboozled to the point of screaming blue murder with the mass of remote controls presented before you in a strange new place? No problems here. The thoughtful owners of this villa have written out instructions for each and every appliance (Apple TV, DVD, Blu-Ray, Indovision satellite channels, PlayStation and the sound system) in intricate detail, laminated them and given them a leather bound folder along with a library of every movie and DVD in the house to make new-media-stress a non-starter. What a joy! The staff (concierge, personal butlers, chef) are all professionally trained and as discrete as you instruct them to be. All we had to do was push the service button in the balé (and in every room) and there they were, smiling and ready to please. Think twice about having a treatment in the spa room, however; massages here are so good that you run the risk of calling the therapist back every single day for more, threatening to put a dent in your wallet. The beauty of the rice terraces, coconut palms, river and (on clear mornings and evenings) the mountains, were what got us the most though; they seemed so close you could almost reach out and touch them.

Villa Sesapi

Villa Sesapi

Indonesia » Bali » Tabanan

Upon arrival at Villa Sesapi, we were each offered a very welcome ice cold beer and ushered up to the open-sided living area where we could see the ocean and get a good sense of our surroundings. The journey out here is quite a long one (90 minutes from the airport) and it’s off the beaten tourist track, so the villa’s complimentary airport transfer is a definite advantage. As the sun lowered into the sea, freshly roasted peanuts and sautéed corn fritters with sweet chilli dipping sauce were brought to our table. These ‘on the house’ cocktail snacks became a much-anticipated nightly routine. In the early morning we set out to walk the black sand beach that has the consistency of fine powder, and watched the brightly painted fishing canoes come in from their overnight adventures. As it was still lobster season, the villa manager was able to track down two generous lobsters from a fisherman in front of the villa. The staff boiled and chilled the lobster meat, and prepared a delicious Thai-style salad for dinner that night. Villa Sesapi is more of a relaxing than action-packed holiday base, yet it’s easy enough to fill your time. By the second day our routine morphed into a nice rhythm, with a morning jog along the beach followed by a hard-earned breakfast of bacon and eggs while catching up on the news in front of the TV; then swimming in the pool and reading or napping on one of the day beds, a walk to the Alila for lunch and a spa treatment, and back to the villa in time for our sunset cocktail ritual. The layout here works well for families travelling with grandparents and young children who will enjoy the ground floor rooms, leaving mom and dad with the master suite upstairs – or for families with teenagers, who will want to take over the upstairs bedroom-media room combination. Villa Sesapi is the perfect entry villa for families who want to experience a less visited Bali yet one that provides all the comforts of home.

Villa Tangguntiti

Villa Tangguntiti

Indonesia » Bali » Tabanan

I think we’ve found the best villa in Bali – the real Bali! Villa Tangguntiti is so far removed from the concrete-carpeted glitz of the south – physically and spiritually – you could easily be in another century. The villa – an inadequate singular noun for this collection of antique buildings – is gorgeous. We loved our master bedroom, with four-poster bed positioned between the joglo columns facing a wall of windows swathed in white silk opening onto the terrace. And our bathroom (bigger than many villa bedrooms) was such an indulgence, with a granite bath reached by a pontoon across a fishpond! There’s plenty to do in the area – wholesome activities include walks, treks, cycle rides through the rice fields, river and deep-sea fishing as well as trips to the black-sand surfing beaches. Our trip coincided with a significant temple ceremony in the village, and we were so lucky to witness a wonderful procession right outside the villa with Abdi, the butler, on hand to explain what was happening. Hats off to the big-hearted staff; nothing was too much trouble, and they were completely unfazed by finding a non-meat-eater in their midst, seamlessly changing tack mid-course without batting an eyelid! Every meal was a gourmet experience… we have rarely eaten better in Bali. That’s thanks to Manuel, the accomplished French villa manager whose background in hospitality and high-end F&B shows in all the details. Though we were only one couple in a five-bedroom villa, the layout was such that we were able to enjoy the spaciousness without it feeling empty. It’s such a romantic place it may even appeal to a couple seeing away-from-it-all solitude. And yet with so much to do in the area, families with active kids can be kept as busy as they want, and the villa has its own open-topped land-cruiser for exploring. But it’s not the place for anyone seeking nightlife, shops and restaurants. This is one villa we would be thrilled to return to; but that means we first have to leave – and that might be difficult!

Villa Tao

Villa Tao

Indonesia » Bali » Tabanan

After the long and busy drive from Seminyak we were super-excited to arrive at Villa Tao. As we sipped our welcome drinks and gazed out at the ocean, the glistening black-sand beach and the waves of Balian surf break just a short stroll down the grassy hill, we felt we had landed in paradise. And we loved the rooftop garden with its 360-degree views of the mountains and the beach. Looking down on the cows roaming the pastures, fisherman catching their dinner and the waves rolling in, we got a very real sense of the simple lifestyle that has attracted so many visitors to Bali’s shores.

At sunset we went to check out some of the local bars and eateries at Balian beach on the other side of the river. A very laidback surfer/backpacker crowd was hanging out in the beachside bungalows. It was obvious that the word was out that this was the place to be if you want to escape the hectic Kuta scene.

The staff were pleasant, and Komang the chef is on hand to cook up a wide variety of home-style meals according to a priced a la carte menu.Just be sure to give the villa a heads-up for any special dietary requirements as there are no western style supermarkets close by.

The villa itself had heaps of space and the gladak houses were definite standout features, but we felt the downstairs concrete bedrooms lacked a bit of soul. The villa is quite new (we visited in November 2011) and there were a few things missing – mosquito nets and blinds on the bathroom windows – but overall it was very well equipped.
