Canggu villas in Bali, Indonesia

Canggu is fast evolving into Bali's hippest area, its beaches renowned for spectacular sunsets and heady surf. Jalan Pantai Batu Balong is lined with cool bars, cosy coffee shops, and varied dining options offering everything from French pastries to tapas, burgers and vegetarian fare. A holiday in Canggu invariably spells spending a lot of time at Echo Beach where a good choice of restaurants and cafes such as The Beach House await, with daily barbecues and live music on Sundays. Known for its nightlife, other vibrant music venues in the vicinity include Old Man’s and Deus Ex Machina. Local boutiques and spas keep you busy, competing with neighbouring Seminyak just a few kilometres further east.

Here, amongst the rice fields which extend all the way down to the beach, you will not only find some of the most luxurious private residences on the island, but also several eclectic restaurants, cafes, bakeries, boutiques and beach bars. Well known in surfing circles, Canggu boasts reef swells larger than the ones found further south in Kuta and Seminyak. Swimming isn’t advisable however as the rips can be dangerous, but there are plenty of other things to do in Canggu from horseback riding to cooking classes. A visit to Finns Recreation Club is a must for families (several elite havens in the area include guest access) and further north lies the sea temple of Pura Tanah Lot, a great day trip for the entire group.

Villa Canggu South

Villa Canggu South

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

Villa Canggu South is great for families or groups of friends who want to escape from the hustle and bustle of Seminyak.  The pool is lovely and the pretty garden features mature trees and an immaculate 15 x 6 metre lawn, which is great for parties and even a family game of cricket.  It’s also a big bonus that it’s such short walk from the beach, albeit not a great swimming beach – this is a coast surfing Mecca – so do take care.  It is also fascinating to see the local community at work.

The villa interiors are filled with mesmerising modern artwork – paintings, murals and installations – by renowned local artists; whether you are an art connoisseur or a layman, there are enough art pieces here to keep you fascinated for hours.  And there are plenty of spaces to relax. We really enjoyed spending time in the bright and breezy upper-floor lounge.  Oh, and we were particularly impressed by the staff.

Dea Villas - Villa Amy

Dea Villas - Villa Amy

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

What the owners have done with the space at Villa Amy is incredible; so much has been fitted into the villa without overcrowding it. We don’t think we have ever before encountered such a large master bedroom, complete with huge hardwood beams stretching all the way to the lofty ceiling, polished floors, antiques, sitting areas and sliding glass doors leading out to a fish pond which appears to cascade into the swimming pool below. We felt a bit spoiled to be honest. An even greater feeling of space is conveyed by the clever use of wooden louvre shutters in the garden walls: lying beside the pool looking at views of the green swaying rice while cooling breezes drift through the shutters was pure bliss. Speaking of the pool, its low position means that when swimming or sun bathing you can’t help but look up and be mightily impressed by the architecture of the master bedroom. A beautiful place to simply chill!

Dea Villas - Villa Radha

Dea Villas - Villa Radha

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

There have been a few changes since we stayed at Villa Radha two and a half years ago, with the addition of two new villas to the enclave, a children’s playground, a gym and a spa. Staying at Villa Radha now means you have the choice of two spas on your doorstep. We decided, however, that we preferred the bygone era ambiance of the totally private wooden spa building within Villa Radha’s magical garden. Like the villa itself, the spa is another antique building so it is more in keeping with the overall character and charm. We noticed that with a total of five villas on the estate there is a now a little bit of hustle and bustle (and dare we say modernity) outside of Radha’s garden walls, but tucked away in our own private paradise – the gardens have grown and are even more beautiful than we remembered – we were able to completely relax and enjoy the wonderful service of the staff, and the great food. If you’re into sleek contemporary design the ethnic, rustic style of Villa Radha may not to be to your taste, but it is nevertheless immaculate and very comfortable, with all the trappings of the 21st century. There is no sitting room as such, but we enjoyed relaxing on the veranda, and were also very comfortable watching TV and movies in the air conditioned bedroom. As for the garden, well this is a landscaping triumph: forget any ideas of a modern Zen-like space, this garden will bewitch you with its tropical abundance of giant taro leaves, spiky pandanus, fan, parlour and travellers palms, bird’s nest ferns, heliconia, flowering frangipani, and rare fruit trees. It will make you wonder how it can be so full (almost to the point of being overgrown) and yet so meticulously maintained. At first we thought it was a little bit expensive for a one-bedroom villa, but when you consider the uniqueness of the property, the space, the facilities, the butler service, the pool, spa and gorgeous garden, you’ll probably agree that it’s extremely good value for money.

Dea Villas - Villa Sarasvati

Dea Villas - Villa Sarasvati

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

Two-and-a-bit years on from our original visit, Villa Sarasvati has matured and multiplied but lost none of its former beauty. Sarasvati is now part of an enclave of five villas (known as Dea Villas), so some of the neighbouring rice field land has been forfeited but there are still rice field views from the upper floor and all of the new buildings within the Dea Villa complex are now complete and available for holiday rentals, offering a whole host of renting options for large groups. The next-door Villa Radha (formerly known as the Gladak House) and its garden is now a separate entity (unless rented in conjunction with Sarasvati), but that’s okay because this is compensated by some new communal facilities, including a children’s playground, a gym and a dedicated spa. Overall, we concluded that Villa Sarasvati has been exceptionally well maintained and is still as eclectic as ever. With the addition of two more properties, the Dea Villas enclave is now busier and more commercial, so while the ambiance may have lost a little bit of its original laidback vibe, the team of staff has of course grown (they serve the whole enclave) and they have become even more slick and professional, yet we still found the service to be very personal.

Dea Villas - Villa Sati

Dea Villas - Villa Sati

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

What we loved about Villa Sati (among many others things) was the privacy and the space. This is the sort of place where you can sneak away from your companions and hide in your own huge bedroom-come-sitting-room. All the rooms are the same so there’ll be no fights over who gets the best one. It was great to have use of all the communal facilities too, we both enjoyed an excellent massage in the spa, and managed a workout in the gym on the Powerplate machine.  For anyone planning an intimate Bali wedding, we thought the little amphitheatre in the garden next to the pool, would be a very cool setting for the nuptials.

Villa Frangipani

Villa Frangipani

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

The Balinese equivalent of an English ‘Rose Cottage', this simple villa is enveloped by trees and traditional Balinese plants and flowers making it a paradise for birds as well as for guests. The stream at the garden end adds a wonderful background accompaniment. This villa is all about relaxing and letting the world go by. The strong teak furniture, terrazzo floors (slippery when wet) and alang alang roofs give the whole place a wonderful warm sepia feel, albeit an ever so slightly musty one. We loved the place and could happily overlook the many imperfections of age (a holed floorboard or a loose plug) for the overall soothing effect Villa Frangipani had on us: it was clear a week would pass all too quickly here.

Perhaps the rooms were a little too sparsely furnished – some more bright art would go a long way to offsetting the very natural tones – and the lack of mod cons might bother some guests (the TVs and stereos in the villa are pretty ancient!). As with most villas in Bali, the mosquito nets were welcomed, although not as necessary as you might anticipate given all the wildlife in the gardens (expect frogs and even the odd monkey). A quick read of the guest book gives you a clear indication that guests (both kids and adults) have loved their stay at Villa Frangipani – the general themes: a warm friendly staff and a relaxing ambience: a great place for a family or two to recharge.  Upon our return it was nice to find that the Wi-Fi was now complimentary. Apart from that it is still the country idyll that it always was with the only alien sounds being from the occasional plane flying high overhead. What a pleasure to be back.

Villa Hana

Villa Hana

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

Although built on a smallish plot of land, this stylish and comfortable villa feels larger than it really is, due to its clever design. In fact, it’s possible to get lost as you make your way around its many rooms, courtyards and sitting areas. The living room is a great area for stretching out and relaxing, while still being able to keep an eye on the kids in the pool, although you may get distracted by those big baskets overflowing with magazines from all over the world. And if you do bring your kids, they are going to revel in having their own amazing bedroom/playroom with PlayStation and bunk beds, and their own terrace as an escape route. They are also going to get truly spoiled by the staff who will lavish them with attention. As for the food, it’s rare indeed to find a chef who knows how to cook the perfect over-easy egg, and this one is a gem who will continue to surprise and tempt you with tasty meals and afternoon snacks. The dining options are many, from formal to poolside – the barbeque courtyard beside the kitchen with its timber deck, pergola roof, stripy shadows and long picnic table was our favourite because, strangely enough, it reminded us of home.

The Iman Villa

The Iman Villa

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

Brand new at the time of our visit in March 2015, The Iman Villa was positively gleaming with its shiny new appliances and we had great fun with the electric blinds and discovering the joys of Apple TV.  The flat white buildings reminded us of Greece, but instead of overlooking the Aegean, we were afloat in a sea of verdant rice fields.  Low garden walls topped in pink bougainvillea make for an endless blue sky and views that go on forever. The gracefully terraced lawns mimic the adjacent rice fields and created the feeling of being very much a part of the natural environment, whether floating in the pool or lying on the bed of the master bedroom, looking through the spotless windows.

We found the staff highly professional, wonderfully friendly and always happy for a chat, while meals were so fabulous that we wanted to kidnap the chef!  With a background in fine dining restaurants and cruise ships, and a true love for the art of cooking, every meal exceeded our expectations.  We didn’t try the Brazilian barbecue, but have no doubt that is excellent, and we feel utterly compelled to recommend the quesadillas, grilled red snapper and the sublime chocolate volcano cake.

Finally, we loved the sense of getting away from it all, even though, in reality we weren’t really so far away at all.
