Canggu villas in Bali, Indonesia

Canggu is fast evolving into Bali's hippest area, its beaches renowned for spectacular sunsets and heady surf. Jalan Pantai Batu Balong is lined with cool bars, cosy coffee shops, and varied dining options offering everything from French pastries to tapas, burgers and vegetarian fare. A holiday in Canggu invariably spells spending a lot of time at Echo Beach where a good choice of restaurants and cafes such as The Beach House await, with daily barbecues and live music on Sundays. Known for its nightlife, other vibrant music venues in the vicinity include Old Man’s and Deus Ex Machina. Local boutiques and spas keep you busy, competing with neighbouring Seminyak just a few kilometres further east.

Here, amongst the rice fields which extend all the way down to the beach, you will not only find some of the most luxurious private residences on the island, but also several eclectic restaurants, cafes, bakeries, boutiques and beach bars. Well known in surfing circles, Canggu boasts reef swells larger than the ones found further south in Kuta and Seminyak. Swimming isn’t advisable however as the rips can be dangerous, but there are plenty of other things to do in Canggu from horseback riding to cooking classes. A visit to Finns Recreation Club is a must for families (several elite havens in the area include guest access) and further north lies the sea temple of Pura Tanah Lot, a great day trip for the entire group.

Astika Toyaning

Astika Toyaning

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

In spite of the ‘high-design’ tendencies that characterise the simplicity and style of Astika Toyaning, we didn’t feel that it’s a look-but-don’t-touch kind of place. To the contrary, it’s very much the kind of space that finds you taking a deep breath and feeling like you’ve landed in the lap of peace and relaxation.

The dining area, with its gorgeous wooden feasting table, just begs for long lunches followed by satiated snoozes followed by long dinners followed by satiated snoozes… you get the picture.  In fact, the use of wood throughout the villa adds beauty to the simplest of spaces and objects (who knew a bathroom basin could be such an object of lust and envy?) while the effective and dramatic use of red adds a certain modern glamour to the décor. Astika Toyaning’s 1600 square metres of space, give all guests plenty of breathing room, and when you add to this the proximity of water – the river, the pool, the water feature – you’ve got a villa tailor-made for the ultimate in relaxing holidays.

Villa Bangkuang

Villa Bangkuang

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

We were impressed by the vast green space that Villa Bangkuang put at our disposal. As we entered through the gates from the driveway, the walls evaporated, offering us an unobstructed view over the rice fields to the ocean several hundred metres away. This is definitely a place to relax, far away from the sounds of the modern world. There is nothing pretentious about Villa Bangkuang, it has elegance, charm, a warm ambience and a gentle energy. It was built as a family home, designed by its owners and furnished with love. Bali is acknowledged throughout the villa with a number of fascinating antique artefacts, and everything blends together beautifully from the rusticity of the rice barn, balé bengong and kitchen to the elegance of the living pavilion and the contemporary stylishness of the guest pavilion. Seseh and Sogsogan are very traditional villages with a close-knit society that warmly welcomes tourists into the fold. All the staff at Villa Bangkuang hail from these villages and are more than willing to place their sweet natures and charm at your service. Check with them to see if there are any special ceremonies taking place during your visit and you may be able to experience true Balinese culture first hand. It was Galungan when we visited (a bit like our Christmas): the streets were lined with giant decorated bamboo penjor poles and we were able to see the men-folk out on the street preparing lawar from freshly-killed pigs, a Balinese delicacy and a traditional male undertaking; much like any Western BBQ!

Villa Bengawan

Villa Bengawan

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

We liked Villa Bengawan straightaway. Its tranquillity and its relaxing open spaces edged by pretty lily ponds were very appealing. Each of the bedrooms is of a good and very similar size (great for groups) and all overlook the garden through floor-to-ceiling glass windows and doors. We particularly loved the semi-outdoor bathrooms where you can shower or bathe right beside your own lush walled garden sprouting giant ferns, aromatic frangipani and palms. Skylights above the washbasins are also very handy for flooding in the right amount of light for applying makeup!

The lily ponds fringing the living and dining areas were very photogenic, and we loved how the pink flowers arched open widely during the day but closed tightly up again each night. The squashy sofas in the lounge were particularly comfortable and the mood of the room seemed to vary according to what was playing on the iPod. Refreshingly, there are no TVs in any of the bedrooms. Instead, you can catch up on the news or watch a movie in the air-conditioned media room to the back of the lounge.

Tufts of feathery grass between the lawn and the swimming pool provide a pleasing screen of privacy for the sun beds on the timber decking. Although the staff were present in the kitchen and around the villa as they cleaned and cooked for us, they were very discreet and tended to pop up only when we needed something – a snack or a drink perhaps. Their English is fairly basic but they did understand what we needed and we didn’t have any problems. The cook is excellent and the villa menu (groceries on guest account) is substantial enough to keep you satisfied for days.

Villa Bougainvillea

Villa Bougainvillea

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

Villa Bougainvillea truly is an escape from the world at large. From the discreet driveway to the lush river banks surrounding the villa, we had a sense of being hidden away in a very private home, and this feeling continued once we were settled in, with each bedroom being screened from the rest of the villa by the tropical gardens. Whilst we appreciated this sense of escape we also quickly realised that the villa’s spacious living pavilion overlooking the pool was a great social hub and enjoyed lazing on the daybeds or sitting for leisurely meals at the solid wood dining table, being looked after by the friendly villa staff. The pool was definitely the focal point of our stay: its setting, between the steep stairs to the living pavilion and the river below the pool’s own infinity edge, under a canopy of colourful local trees, gave a wonderful sense of drama. It was easy to spend hours literally soaking in the calm tranquillity of Bougainvillea.

Any feeling of isolation is, however, only a clever illusion as the villa is a mere two to three kilometres from the increasingly popular beaches of Berawa and Pererenan where there is also a growing number of restaurants. Bougainvillea is also one of eight private villas which make up the Pangi River Village complex so multi-villa rentals would make this an ideal location for larger groups (see location section for links to the other villas). The Staff were very efficient and helpful and happy to arrange anything from shopping for groceries to massages or tours. If you require a car and driver, however, this is charged extra and you need to plan ahead.

Villa Bunga Wangi

Villa Bunga Wangi

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

To quote Sadi, "A garden is a delight to the eye and a solace for the soul." Here at Bunga Wangi there is inspiration and beauty at every turn; the early morning sunlight glinting on the golden birds of paradise, the fallen frangipani scattered along the stone paths, the late afternoon shadows dancing across palm fronds. The garden is an endless source of wonder, and makes me yearn to do something creative - actually I take hundreds of close-up photos of flowers. We loved the meandering pathways, the constant trickle of running water, the pool fringed with tropical foliage and the intricate detail in everything, from the stone statues to the elaborate floral carvings in the furniture and doors.

We happily made allowances for the dated design, faded furnishings and occasional hints of must – this was part of the rustic charm and authenticated the Balinese experience. But this villa won’t be everyone’s cup of tea: there is nothing sleek or sophisticated here, no contemporary edges or gadgets (apart from iPod docks and satellite TV), this villa is like your favourite old jumper, perhaps a little tatty around the edges but warm, cosy and a perfect fit.

Villa Bungadesa I (5BR + 1)

Villa Bungadesa I (5BR + 1)

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

This little enclave across the river from Batubelig beach is as peaceful and quiet as the day is long. All we could hear at night was the sound of the rolling surf through the open windows. And the early morning view  -  from the bed in the master suite  -  over the pink-capped waves of the Indian Ocean was inspiration... at its very best! The gardens at Bungadesa are huge  -  filled with soft lawns, flowering tropical plants, fruit trees (you’ve got to taste the homegrown passion fruit) and a wonderful mix of Indonesian architecture and indigenous statues. This place catches the sun and the cooling sea breezes in equal parts making for perfect sunbathing conditions beside the pool. And the villa staff are great  -  funny, sassy, chatty when needed and gone like the wind when we wanted to be alone. A sweet touch was a surprise gift for the ladies, while Nana’s home-cooking proved to be superb, especially her seafood curry.

Make sure you take the time to nip down the local lagoon-side restaurant on your way back from the beach. It’s charming and rustic and, as well as a great menu of holiday favourites, can rustle up a half-decent pizza in a flash... and the beer is always icy cold. Villa Gabah

Villa Gabah

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

It's always nice to be one of the first guests at a brand new villa, particularly when you know you definitely won't be the last. Even though we could still smell the fresh paint and plaster on the walls, as soon as we slipped into the pool, Villa Gabah felt like a place we'd be happy to call a second home. Despite its impressive size, all the facilities are contained in a single building so we never felt far from anything we needed. The helpful staff were happy to bring cool drinks from the fridge upstairs while we were lounging by the pool, and staying in one of the poolside bedrooms meant we only needed to venture to the upper floor lounge for meals on the terrace or movies on the flat screen. Kids will love the pool and garden and can be easily supervised from the terrace. The stream that runs in front of the villa provides added fascination, not to mention a soothing natural soundtrack to your stay. If it wasn't for the surrounding views and wooden accessories, we felt we might forget this was Bali. But despite the villa's secluded location, if you hire the car and driver you're within easy reach of local cultural attractions and beaches. For those who don't feel like venturing out much, the option of a private chef (small daily fee plus provisioning) means you can make the most of what is a relaxed, self-contained and easy escape.

Villa Infinity

Villa Infinity

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

The beauty of this villa is the size, (and of course the views). Everything about it is huge and it is totally geared up for large groups of people, weddings and parties, with an extensive sound system (complete with hidden speakers that extend through the garden) and a highly professional kitchen with five-star cuisine prepared by two chefs. The U-shaped sofa in the living pavilion can accommodate 22 people, while the dormitory can accommodate 12 kids or, alternatively, the same number of adult guests who need to bunk down for the night. Note: although this room is not really suitable for adults, guests at events and weddings can sleep here for an additional fee. There were just two of us staying at Infinity, so we felt a bit lost lazing by the large pool all by ourselves. Still, it is a beautiful sprawling expanse of lawn and beautiful architecture so we got over that concern pretty quickly and got into the sheer amount of space available to us by imagining the stellar events that must take place here. An early morning swim is a must, especially as the pool is the warmest we have encountered. Mornings at Infinity are also a time of spectacular beauty with birds singing and crickets chirping; you can see the volcanic backbone of Bali on the horizon and watch the farmers out in their fields tending their crops. Just stunning!
