Villa Kinara

Considering its heart-of-the-action location in Bali’s sophisticated Seminyak, it’s extraordinary just how serene life is at Villa Kinara. It also beggars belief that this villa is brand new (completed in 2012). Thoughtful design combines classic and timeless Indonesian architecture with twenty-first century luxury and convenience to create a truly delightful villa and one we felt very much at home in. It’s very hard NOT to relax here with a gorgeous garden to enjoy, refreshing pool to dive into and wide breezy balconies and terraces to stretch out on. Then there’s the very convivial pool table and bar area and the massive sofas to curl up on come evening time.

Not only did we admire the size of the bedrooms, but we thought them beautifully furnished and the bathrooms immaculate (two of them have indulgent semi-outdoor tubs). All rooms have plenty of private, comfortable sitting space, and the daybeds outside the upstairs bedrooms are equally inviting.

Although there’s a huge choice of places to eat and drink within easy reach of the villa, a chef is on hand to prepare a wide range of Indonesian and Western favourites for breakfast, lunch and dinner; just talk through your selection with him, or Theodora, Villa Kinara’s friendly and very capable manager, and the rest will be taken care of.

Although it wasn’t a problem during our visit, we thought that the staff quarters might be a bit close to the main living areas and could result some unwanted noise.

Villa Kodok

As soon as we entered Villa Kodok we felt a real sense of seclusion, serenity and privacy. And we were so impressed with the staff’s from-the-heart service. This lovely team of Balinese people stayed well out of our way but were there in an instant if we needed them. A brass bell is provided to summon them at any time.

The villa was built as a home and has been furnished with love, yet it is also stylish, practical and immaculately maintained. We were delighted to note that there is so much emphasis on children here; it’s a true family-friendly villa with every consideration given to the care, entertainment and safety of guests’ children. Even the fishpond outside the living room has a protective grill over it to deter over-curious kids. The villa has a connection with the nearby Glo Day Spa, so guests get a discount and therapists will come to the villa.

Villa Aliya - Laksmana Villas

We have no doubt that this villa is a great place for families and for entertaining. One of the bedrooms is also dedicated to the enjoyment of children, furnished with beanbags and equipped with soft toys and games, a large, flatscreen TV,DVD player and a good selection of kids’ movies. The staff really proved their ability to look after us, accommodating all of our last minute requests with willingness, ease and big Balinese smiles. The location in Seminyak is absolutely superb, and the villa is gorgeous!

Villa Mimi

You can always tell when an owner has designed a villa for him or herself and not just to turn a profit. Villa Mimi has that clean, chic, trendy Seminyak sense of place that screams contemporary Bali style, yet also manages to feel like home. The villa’s charm and functionality make for a great long weekend getaway or a home base for the summer. This little gem works very well for Bali visitors who want to be in the thick of things, yet covet privacy and an interesting architectural aesthetic. Although the media room could use a larger, comfier couch, we liked the thoughtfully framed personal photos that give a glimpse of the owner’s passion for life, and the big book selection. I soon found a collection of short stories written by a long-time Bali expat about her quirky life on the island and sank into one of the bean bags by the pool as Nur the housekeeper delivered French press coffee in eclectic mismatched china. My favourite quote captured the essence of our stay at Villa Mimi, “Those in synchronicity with Bali are among the happiest people I have ever known.” As the afternoon lazed on, Nur checked in about ordering dinner. We sheepishly asked if she would be willing to make soto ayam, an Indonesian twist on chicken noodle soup (which wasn’t on the menu). Without hesitation, she hopped on her motorbike to grab the ingredients and within an hour, we had a healthy, steaming lemongrass broth simmering on the stove and bowls of rice noodles topped with sliced chicken breast, green onion, bean sprouts and wedges of lime. Ask and you shall receive!

Villa Phinisi

Phinisi is a great villa in a great spot! We loved the use of the recycled boat timber, which added a unique dimension to this modern villa. It was obvious that the owner had chosen each piece very carefully.

Given its central location, the villa really is a hidden oasis. The lagoon-style pool is one of the most inviting we have seen, and lounging on the sunbeds under the traditional Balinese umbrellas or getting pampered in the massage room was the ultimate in relaxation.

With the beach, shops, bars and restaurants right at our fingertips there was no shortage of entertainment options, but having meals prepared in the privacy of the villa when we wanted and getting together to watch a movie on the projector screen in the sunken living area took a lot of beating!

Rumi Villas - Villa Rumi (4BR)

Villa Rumi is quite a ‘find’. We were delighted by the sense of space, and couldn’t believe how quiet it was considering it was a hop-&-skip away from the noise and action on Jalan Laksmana. We loved the open living area, and appreciated the privacy of the master suite, with its garden terrace and outdoor tub for alfresco bathing. But our favourite daytime space by far was the balé by the pool…and having ice-cold drinks delivered to us by delightful staff throughout the day.

We were lucky to meet the owner during our stay and found his enthusiasm quite contagious. He has put so much heart into designing and building Villa Rumi, and really understands what so many families are looking for in a holiday villa.

Villa Rumi is perfect for parents who want their kids to be safe and cared for without running themselves ragged, and who want their own retreat while being only steps away from the ‘sweetshop’ for grownups that is Seminyak. It’s great to have the option of keeping kids close by in the bedroom next door, or carving out some precious privacy by assigning them a bedroom across the pool. We think that this room configuration — and the fact that all bedrooms are equally generous in size — will also be appreciated by two small families vacationing together, and by groups of friends.

Rumi Villas - Villa Jepun (3BR)

A lot of care has gone into creating in Villa Jepun (and its sisters in Rumi Villas) a well-designed, value-for-money family retreat. Although the garden is small, we were happy to have a (surprisingly) large pool in place of lawn and, with the quick-dry Sunbrella-covered cushions on the sofa, we didn’t have to worry about wet swimsuits in the living area when stirring from the pool loungers to get out of the sun. The dining area did get hot during the day, but the discomfort was nothing a floor-standing fan wouldn’t remedy. We loved the air-conditioned master bedroom. The bed was extremely comfortable, the bed-linen luxurious and the pillows heavenly (normally this reviewer’s first complaint!). The multi-tasking housekeeper Dewi was a delight (it was a treat witnessing her doing the daily offerings), and the villa manager Nyoman was charming and efficient. The owner, who likens his team to a family, makes a point of meeting his guests when he’s in Bali, and his ebullience helps explain the glowing testimonials and high number of families who choose to return. Villa Jepun may not suit those looking for a swanky Seminyak pad and the level of pandering only a phalanx of full-time staff can provide, but it is perfect for parents who want their kids to be safe and cared for without running themselves ragged, and who want their own retreat while being only steps away from shops and restaurants – and all this for less than the price of a modestly-starred hotel. Holiday budgets go further too when the first 19-litre water bottle and all personal laundry is free. And, unusually, there’s no mark-up on the grocery shopping the housekeeper is happy to do for guests.
