A lot of care has gone into creating in Villa Yuyu (and its sisters in Rumi Villas) a well-designed, value-for-money family retreat. Although the garden is small, we were happy to have a decent-sized pool in place of lawn and, with the quick-dry Sunbrella-covered cushions on the sofa, we didn’t have to worry about wet swimsuits in the living area when stirring from the pool loungers to get out of the sun. The air conditioned master bedroom proved to be a welcome retreat – the bed was extremely comfortable and we were treated to a stunning sunset from our ring-side seats on the private terrace. The multi-tasking housekeeper worked well behind the scenes, and the villa manager Nyoman was charming and efficient. The owner, who likens his team to a family, makes a point of meeting his guests when he’s in Bali, and his ebullience helps explain the glowing testimonials and high number of families who choose to return. Villa Yuyu may not suit those looking for a swanky Seminyak pad and the level of pandering only a phalanx of full-time staff can provide, but it is perfect for parents who want their kids to be safe and cared for without running themselves ragged, and who want their own retreat while being only steps away from shops and restaurants – and all this for less than the price of a modestly-starred hotel. Holiday budgets go further too when the first 19-litre water bottle and all personal laundry is free. And, unusually, there’s no mark-up on the grocery shopping the housekeeper is happy to do for guests.

Sahana Villa I is great choice for families and friends wanting a taste of luxury without breaking the bank.

We loved the fact that there was so much going on within walking distance of our own private retreat: I mean, who wouldn’t appreciate a Champagne and oyster bar just metres from their front door?

We were impressed when the owners greeted us on arrival to let us know they were on hand should we need them; it showed they genuinely cared that we had an enjoyable and memorable stay.

Facing west, the villa receives plenty of afternoon sun and can get quite warm, especially in the open living and dining areas, but the air-conditioned bedrooms provided adequate respite.

We liked the fact that the pleasant housekeeping staff were able to prepare meals when we were too tired to go out, giving us more time to kick back and relax. And the complimentary continental breakfast each morning was a nice inclusion.

If, like us, you enjoy being close to the action but also being able to withdraw to a peaceful haven when the mood strikes, then Villa Sipo is the place for you. Quietly and securely situated within the Sentosa Villa estate, and yet only minutes away from Bali’s most fashionable playground, we definitely enjoyed the best of both worlds here. This is a sociable, easy-to-live-in villa. We found ourselves comfortably spread out, with the teenagers lazing on loungers by the main pool, dads reading the newspaper over a coffee at the breakfast bar or catching up on the news in the study/TV room, mum’s reading up on shopping options under the garden balé but all still very much together and enjoying the villa equally.

The well-equipped kitchen is incredibly enticing so, despite the talents of the villa chef (who sensibly suggested we order our meals a day-ahead and leave him to go out and buy the groceries with a cash float from us to cover the cost), you may find yourself tempted to go shopping at one of a handful of nearby deli’s (Bali deli, Grocer & Grind or The Bali Catering Co deli) and do it yourself (with someone else to wash the dishes of course) – at least for one or two nights during your stay.

The staff are ever smiling and ready to serve whilst also being discreetly unobtrusive which was also a big plus for us. We imagine that with everything Sipo has to offer, both within the villa and on its doorstep, it will get many repeat guests.

What a great find Villa Umah Maya was, quiet and romantic, yet right in the middle of buzzy Seminyak, Bali’s chicest ‘hood, with the shops, restaurants and beach all within either walking distance or a short taxi ride. So, you girls in the party can send your boys off surfing while you get busy flexing their wallets.

Fenny, the manager/housekeeper, certainly knows her way around a kitchen and has recently been swotting up on Greek cuisine so make sure you have at least a couple of lunches at home by the pool and prepare to be amazed. And if you need anything else, Fenny is more than happy to jump on her bike and find it for you.

Definitely try out the hammocks as you laze the day away in the pool. Half in the water, half out of the water, these are fun, fun, fun.

Villa Coco Groove boasts chic, minimalist tropical living in a spacious garden setting. We found the villa to be very peaceful considering it’s situation in a compact residential area, near to Seminyak’s restaurant and shopping districts. The grassed coconut grove and large swimming pool provided an attractive focal point for our days of relaxation and we agreed that the vast gardens (a rarity for villas in this sought-after area), make Coco Groove a great place for functions and parties, or for families with kids who need lots of space to let of steam. Really, this villa is suitable for all age groups and offers exceptional value for money.

The villa is a fabulous blend of old and new. We particularly liked the Sarawak theme in the lounge; the back wall is adorned with baby carriers, masks, parang knives, oars and blowpipes of ethnic groups from the Borneo region, such as the Dayak, Iban and Orang Ulu. You can read all about them in a number of the books found in a small, but eclectic library in the master bedroom. Whilst the TV lounge is functional, the small screen and limited seating engineers it more towards a reading room or study (there are no TVs in the bedrooms either).

We found the staff (total seven) professional, friendly and speak good English. They live out, however hours are flexible depending on your needs, and with three security guards there is always someone on hand. Babysitters and masseurs are available on request at additional charge. The chef excelled in all the meals he prepared for us. You can choose from an extensive suggestion menu and the staff will do the provisioning (a small charge is made to cover petrol). A well-thought-out information book informs you of the day-to-day operations of the villa and recommends day trips which can be arranged by the staff, whilst also giving great advice on local attractions.

Villa Jempiring must be in the running for having one of the coolest swimming pool designs on the island. Not only does it slope gradually down into the deep but the shallow bits are painted and textured the colour and feel of real sand! Surround that with big green tropical plants under a big blue tropical sky and you can be forgiven for getting lost in a world of tropical island castaways. Even the daybeds are semi-submerged upon ‘the shore’ and, best of all, the tide never goes out. The owners have used recycled hardwood throughout that draws heavily on the indigenous themes of Eastern Indonesian that adds even more to the eclectic and wild experience. We especially enjoyed the positioning of the three upstairs bedrooms, which are bathed in sunshine with massive wraparound decks making a perfect spot for sun lovers. And the guest bedroom in the garden would be a perfect spot to put the in-laws or the teenagers. You also can’t ask for a better location if the beach or party scene is your raison d’etre.

Considering its heart-of-the-action location in Bali’s sophisticated Seminyak, it’s extraordinary just how serene life is at Villa Kinaree. Thoughtful design combines classic and timeless Indonesian architecture with twenty-first century luxury and convenience to create a truly delightful villa and one we felt very much at home in. It’s very hard NOT to relax here with a gorgeous courtyard garden to enjoy, refreshing pool to dive into and a wide breezy balcony to stretch out on. Then there’s the very convivial pool table and bar area and the massive sofas to curl up on come evening time.

We loved the beautifully furnished bedrooms – especially the snug bedroom four set on its own above the living area - and the indulgent jacuzzi tub in the master bathroom. All rooms have plenty of private, comfortable sitting space, and the daybed outside the master bedroom made a lovely spot for a quiet read.

Although there’s a huge choice of places to eat and drink within easy reach of the villa, a chef is on hand to prepare a wide range of Indonesian and Western favourites for breakfast, lunch and dinner; just talk through your selection with him, or Theodora, Villa Kinaree’s friendly and very capable manager, and the rest will be taken care of.
