Seminyak villas in Bali, Indonesia

North west of Bali’s international airport, coastal Seminyak is Bali’s established late-night party land, laying claim to the highest concentration of independent fine-dining restaurants and beach clubs on the island, including Ku Dé Ta, Potato Head, Cocoon, La Lucciola, Sarong, Métis and Sardine. Hip and happening Seminyak also boasts a plethora of chic cocktail bars, sumptuous spas, and fashionable boutiques.

A world-class playground for the rich, the famous and the bon vivants, the vibrant nightlife and luxurious accommodation in Seminyak draws a sophisticated crowd of ‘beautiful people’, especially Europeans. Seminyak Beach is the place where local and ex-pat communities gather every evening at sunset.

Seminyak is Bali’s have-it-all holiday destination for a relaxing beachside escape with easy access to the many tourist attractions around the island. Head south for Asia’s #1 water park, Waterbom, or hit the links at the scenic New Kuta Golf Club in the Bukit. North of Seminyak, enjoy the sporting facilities at Finns Recreation Club (for which some holiday villas in the area include guest membership), offering social and leisure amenities, including a state-of-the-art gym, a 25m swimming pool and a tennis and squash centre. For horse lovers, three riding stables are located at nearby Canggu – Kuda P, Tarukan, and Bali Equestrian Centre.

Villa Lilibel

Villa Lilibel

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

If you’re looking for a really central base in Seminyak, there are few villas better located than Villa Lilibel. Not only can you walk to the beach and a host of restaurants from here, but the villa is also well laid out, well staffed and brilliantly sized. Living areas are huge and very sociable, yet you can also find corners for peace and privacy if you so desire. The master bedroom was much larger than the other bedrooms and its bathroom easily the most decadent. We thought the other ensuites were perhaps a little dated and not so well lit.

And much as we might frown upon such unsocial holiday behaviour, this villa is a TV addict’s dream, with TVs in the main living room, media room (plus sets in all of the six bedrooms) - The three bedrooms off the villa’s entrance courtyard were the quietest and the ground floor rooms would be good for sleeping kids and elderly rellies. We liked the different dining options at the villa: the barbecue terrace is a very sociable venue for long balmy evenings spent dining, wining and chatting. The staff proudly told us that Villa Lilibel’s barbecued pork ribs are a bit of an institution. Unfortunately, we didn’t get the chance to try them on this visit!

There’s a reasonably priced menu at Lilibel and a choice of breakfast is included in the rate. The chances are that with so many great restaurants on your doorstep you’ll be eating out much of the time too. The staff were friendly and attentive; there was always someone around when we needed them and they were quick in preparing our meals and drinks. We were impressed with the kitchen too as it was so well-equipped. Keen cooks would be happy here, and all of the provisioning can be left to the staff.

Villa Lulito

Villa Lulito

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

Our stay at Villa Lulito was a delight on so many levels. From the moment we arrived and were greeted by the staff with cold towels and even colder drinks, and then saw just how lovely the villa is with all its many corners to relax, play and spread out, we knew we were in for a great holiday.

We spent a lot of time in and around the pool and were able to follow the arc of the sun all day long simply by moving from sun lounger to daybed. The pool toys also got a lot of use – especially the crocodile – as did the pool lounge and the palm-shaded garden table. During an afternoon tea break up on the first floor balcony, we enjoyed a nosy look out over the roofs and gardens of the other luxury villas in the neighbourhood.

The bedrooms were fantastic: mini sanctuaries where one could retire any time of the day, close the curtains, turn on the air-conditioning and have a beautiful guilt-free nap in a really comfortable bed.

A big shout out goes to the staff, who were a real delight and took care of us beyond expectations. We happily let them ply us with fresh drinks, fantastic gourmet meals (a special thank you to the chef), lots of useful advice about Bali and big friendly smiles all round.

Being in the heart of Seminyak gave us easy access to all the great restaurants and bars that we have been hearing about, and we were able simply to stroll up the street to indulge our passions for all things food and drink, including great coffees and brunches at Sea Circus and Petitenget Café. The burgers at WahWah, right outside the front door, make the best takeaway ever (pricy but so delicious), and as for our delectable dining experiences at Sarong, Teatro and Merah Putih . . . say no more. We especially loved sunset drinks at Ku de Ta. So close! And having the beach less than a five-minute walk away was a dream.

Sayang d'Amour

Sayang d'Amour

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

Sayang d’Amour is a veritable palace, and can’t fail to please. If you like opulence and grandeur, the colour purple, intricate detailing, Moorish arches, palatial bedrooms, indulgent bathing facilities, an astounding collection of objets d’art, a stellar kitchen, discreet staff, and plenty of activities and games for the kids, all just a short walk from the beach and Bali’s best restaurants, then perhaps you should stop your villa search and push “book Villa Sayang d’Amour” right now.

It took us ages to tour the villa simply because there is so much visual distraction (in the best possible way). Curiosity forced us to take the long and lingering roundabout route through the main house via the kitchen, living and dining room, and office/TV room, taking in all the detailing, the furnishings and décor (including hundreds of Moroccan-styled floor tiles) before we even reached the garden. Eighty percent of the materials, furnishings and artefacts have been imported from Morocco by the French owners to recreate a private fantasy surrounded by high walls, so while it may be true that the villa doesn’t have much of a connection with Bali, it’s fun to fantasise!

And although there is a chef on hand to work magic in that gourmet kitchen, being positioned in Petitenget means that some of the best restaurants in (dare we say) Asia are literally within easy walking distance. Having the super stylish W Retreat and Potato Head Beachclub as neighbours gives you the (again walking distance) choice to hang out with the movers and shakers and catch the beachclub vibe – should the privacy of your palace prove too much.

At the time of our visit (June 2013) the villa was still very new and the staff not quite up to the slick standard that you might expect from a property of this calibre. But it is early days, and from what we saw we expect they will achieve service of the highest level before too long.

Villa Windu Sari

Villa Windu Sari

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

During our inspection of Villa Windu Sari we were treated to great service and cuisine by the staff. The villa is modern, functional, practical and most importantly comfortable. We felt very at home here. Our visit was with a group of friends and we found Windu Sari well laid out and generous enough for us to be able to enjoy each other’s company or retreat for some privacy and solitude when we wished. The villa would also work well for families.

4S Villas - Villa Sea

4S Villas - Villa Sea

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

Cosy, central and very, very private are the three adjectives we’d use to describe Villa Sea. For one couple, two couples or a family of four this represents great value for money considering the location. You literally cannot get any more central than this. It’s compact, sure, but it’s a perfectly formed sun trap that can’t fail to win you with its charm.

The kitchenette is good for preparing the occasional simple meal and the Casa Gourmet supermarket next door makes this option easy and attractive. After watching the sunset from the beach we had an evening in for a change and enjoyed a good pasta and a bottle of red by the pool. The beckoning restaurants will probably win most of the time, however, and you'll be spoiled for choice with the numbers of fine establishments within walking distance.

4S Villas - Villa Sun

4S Villas - Villa Sun

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

What a happy place Villa Sun is. With sun sculptures and sun-shaped chandeliers everywhere, we were in holiday mood from the moment we stepped inside. For a two-bedroom villa in deepest Seminyak, with a pool on one side and a small lawn on the other, we wanted for nothing. And not only is there a supermarket within 100m, but it’s one of the island’s best stocked, so we could get all our gourmet goodies without having to break a sweat. It’s a short stroll to the beach along a quiet set of lanes, which are virtually traffic free so no headaches there. Make sure you get down to the beach at cocktail hour for a sunset sky show that will leave you breathless. Then it’s just a short walk back to Seminyak’s famous restaurants and nightspots.

Adelle Villa Two

Adelle Villa Two

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

As soon as we walked through the doors of Adelle Villa Two we thought ‘this is cute’ and for the location ‘surprisingly spacious’. It’s a dark wooden building so the effect is cosy, comfy and homely rather than light, bright and breezy. The rooms and living areas are basic and rustic with dated appliances (don’t expect a Bose sound system and plasma screens) but they do the job in a simple and relaxed way. And the generous garden and pool make it a great place for kids to let loose and for all to enjoy the sunshine. Due to its central location you can hear the faint sound of traffic in the distance and ambient sounds from the neighbouring villas but overall it is a quiet and peaceful place to unwind.

The staff spoke very limited English but the friendly villa manager, who is only a phone call away, can answer any questions you may have.

Unfortunately there was a local power failure just after our arrival, so we were literally left in the dark and without a back-up generator. But instead of searching for candles and fending for ourselves we decided to check out the nearby restaurant scene where we were simply spoilt for choice.

If you are looking for modern high-end luxury then Adelle Villa Two isn’t for you, but if you want great value for money, easy and comfortable living in a central location, then it ticks all the boxes.

Villa Alice 2

Villa Alice 2

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

If you’re looking for a villa in Seminyak, chances are you’re hoping to find one that’s got a great central location within strolling distance of a choice of restaurants, shops and bars. Villa Alice 2’s situation just a two-minute walk to Jalan Laksmana (aka Eat Street) and ten-minutes from Seminyak’s popular swathe of beaches will not disappoint. Very handily, its two bedrooms are equally sized making it suitable for families, couples and friends alike looking for a private place to stay in the heart of Seminyak.

We liked that having the living and sleeping areas divided across the tropical garden meant that in the evening, anyone retiring early will hear little noise from the lounge. The fact that the garden is enclosed and that the swimming pool has a shallow paddler-friendly section makes the villa especially suitable for families looking for a central base. A pool safety fence can be erected on request and baby cots are available. Each bedroom came with its own TV and DVD player (bedroom 1 also has cable) so that individual guests can escape and movie watch as they like.

We found the staff to be friendly and very helpful, and they left us to our own devices for much of the time. Since their working hours are from 8am until 4pm every day, we liked having the house to ourselves in the evening too; this arrangement works well for privacy-seeking couples. An American breakfast is cooked daily, and if you wish to pick a dish or two from one of the extensive take away menus they will help you to order lunch and dinner. Between the BaliEpicure fine dining menu (which we recommend) and the Hallo Bali magazine of numerous restaurants and cuisines there’s loads to choose from. You can also arrange for a cook to come to the villa for a fee. Otherwise, just head out and enjoy the amazing restaurants on your doorstep.
