The Experience
An exquisite carved angel – presumably the influence behind the name of this tidy villa – watches over guests in the living and dining area, its white marble a sharp contrast to the purple soft furninshings and the bright graffiti paintings that adorn the walls. The staff look almost angelic in their batik uniforms too; their service reliable and discreet enough to really enhance your holiday experience.
This single-storey, compact, walled villa is simple in style. Three bedrooms, all ensuite and all king-bedded, face onto a 12 x 3m swimming pool, a shady balé (gazebo) wedged in between. Perhaps the highlight though is the open-sided dining, kitchen and living area which spills out onto the pool terrace giving an airy feel.
The villa’s location is divine, yet also with a hellish twist. Situated in Petitenget, on the outskirts of Seminyak, the villa is just a ten minute walk from the restaurants, shops and night spots of this exclusive corner of Bali. Pretty Petitenget Beach, renowned for its surf breaks, panoramic coastline and picture-postcard sunsets is a few minutes further. The twist? Villa Angel is positioned off the main road down a track so tight and narrow that cars will find it a challenge. This hell-to-access track does, however, ensure heavenly peace and quiet in this laid-back local neighbourhood.

With three bedrooms and a 12m pool, this Seminyak villa offers great value for money.
All three bedrooms are spacious and have excellent bathrooms – clean, modern and very functional, if a little minimalist. The staff were attentive, although a little timid and their English wasn’t always great, but their desire to please is without compare. As the villa is managed independently, rather than through a specialist management company, the training levels were perhaps not quite up to the usual professional standard. The more senior staff, including the villa manager, were much better but they also work at the owner’s other villa so are not always around. That said, they were easily tracked down when needed.
All in all we liked the villa for what it was and would recommend it for a small group or family, but maybe not for very young children as the pool would be a constant concern.

Highlights
The casual seating area alongside the pool is the perfect place to laze with a good book, listen to music, put your feet up or, in our case, work away using the excellent WiFi connection – all one step away from a cool refreshing dip in the pool. Alternatively take a nap on the daybeds in the balé or treat yourself to a massage (costs extra).
Surprises
The incredibly narrow ‘gang’ leading to the villa is not something that we’d want to attempt in a car – although our Indonesian driver didn’t seem to have any troubles at all! The butler and housekeeping staff will be more than happy to whip up some simple Indonesian food, but don’t go expecting any gourmet treats. Alternatively, a cook can be arranged for an additional cost.
PROs

- Minutes’ walk from Seminyak’s shops
- Close to the beach
- Pleasant open living areas
- Spacious bedrooms
CONs
- Very tight entrance for cars
- Staff’s English a tad weak
- Compact walled surround

Location
Angel’s Villa sits within a compact area of local houses and luxury villas jostling elbow to elbow amongst the temples. Tiny gangs (lanes), barely wide enough for a car, lead off the main roads threading through the area. Angel’s Villa sits at the end of one such narrow gangs which turns sharply several times, challenging even the most adept driver. The high surrounding wall protects the villa from being overlooked by most of its neighbours. At the end of the winding gang is a road leading into Seminyak’s main restaurant drag, Jalan Laksmana, a brisk ten minute walk away (less than 1km). The beaches of Seminyak are a kilometre further on.

Hip and happening Seminyak also boasts a plethora of chic cocktail bars, sumptuous spas, and fashionable boutiques.
A world-class playground for the rich, the famous and the bon vivants, the vibrant nightlife and luxurious accommodation in Seminyak draws a sophisticated crowd of ‘beautiful people’, especially Europeans. Seminyak Beach is the place where local and ex-pat communities gather every evening at sunset.
Seminyak is Bali’s have-it-all holiday destination for a relaxing beachside escape with easy access to the many tourist attractions around the island. Head south for Asia’s #1 water park, Waterbom, or hit the links at the scenic New Kuta Golf Club in the Bukit. North of Seminyak, enjoy the sporting facilities at Finns Recreation Club (for which some holiday villas in the area include guest membership), offering social and leisure amenities, including a state-of-the-art gym, a 25m swimming pool and a tennis and squash centre. For horse lovers, three riding stables are located at nearby Canggu – Kuda P, Tarukan, and Bali Equestrian Centre.
About Bali
Bali is Indonesia’s most popular tourist location and is considered one of Asia's premier tropical island destinations. Steeped in history and renowned for its artistic way of life, Bali is a peaceful contrast to some of the more frantic destinations Asia has to offer.
The inner peace and creative talents of the Balinese has attracted artists the world over fascinated by local dancers, silversmiths, wood carvers, potters and painters that seem to pervade throughout the island. The abundant verdant fields and surrounding sea have long supplied Bali with an easy surplus of food leaving time for life’s more artistic past times. As a result everything in Bali has a creative and religious element centred around the local Banjar (residents association) – little, adorned temples are everywhere, doors are covered in intricate carvings, huge kites ward off evil spirits and colourful roadside ceremonies bring traffic to a standstill.
Bali is a popular destination principally from Australia and Asia but also from all over Europe. The island welcomes thousands of visitors each year to a relaxing lifestyle, stunning beaches, world class surf, vibrant villages, and spectacular scenery all with an exquisite tropical climate. Located approximately two hours’ flying time from Singapore the island is serviced by an international airport at Denpasar with direct flights to and from many major cities in Asia, Europe and Australia and many more via Jakarta, Indonesia’s capital.
The island offers an impressive range of leisure and lifestyle amenities including world-class golf courses, wonderful seascapes for surfing, diving and snorkelling as well as luxurious spas, chic boutiques, tropical forests, towering volcanoes and international cuisine.
Rooms
The compact walled gardens at Angel’s Villa, lined with palms, bamboos and bougainvillea are dominated by a 12 x 3m pool. At one end of the garden double wooden doors mark the entrance to the villa while a high wall along one side of the pool, ensures almost complete privacy from neighbours. The villa’s main building flanks the other side of the pool. At the entrance end is an open-sided dining area, where a staggeringly solid wood table (seats 8+) is positioned for pleasant poolside views. Inside is a simple lounge with easy sofas comfortably upholstered in purple, a flat-screen TV and stereo. Whitewashed walls and marble tiles give this shady room a pleasant cool feel, overhead fans turn the air to give a refreshing breeze. Bright, even aggressive, graffiti art together with a selection of Indonesian artefacts give this simple contemporary room a touch of colour and flair. Off the lounge is a simple but well-equipped guest kitchen with a staff kitchen for food preparation hidden further around the corner.
Adjacent is the master bedroom and second bedroom. A third bedroom is housed in a separate pavilion at the far end of the pool. All three bedrooms are ensuite (two with shower and one with bathtub and shower), air conditioned and open onto the pool with large sliding patio doors. The classic black and white bathrooms each feature large rain showers (one open to the sky). Simply furnished, all the bedrooms are dominated by comfy king beds.
Wedged between two of the bedrooms, alongside the pool, is a casual shady open-fronted lounge with sofas lining the walls - the perfect place to relax, listen to music (bring iPod, docking station supplied) catch up on a good book or surf the web if so inclined. Cocooned between the main and bedroom pavilions in the far corner is a shady balé with pretty alang alang (thatched) roofing.
