The Experience
The melodious sound of crashing waves echoes throughout every part of this spacious six-bedroomed family retreat. Auraliya’s design is reflective of relaxed tropical living; high roofs and louvered windows allow the air to circulate freely whilst the sociable, open-sided living and dining pavilions maximise the sea breeze and complement the spectacular ocean views. A statue of Ganesh, the Hindu elephant god, welcomes guests across the threshold and from each of the villa’s bedrooms, you can lie in bed and gaze over the pool, garden or sea.
The villa is designed for maximum relaxation. At the heart of Auraliya lies an inviting sky blue swimming pool whose fibre-optic colour-changing lights are magical come dusk as they reflect the stars emerging in the sky. Sunbeds languish on the expansive, sun-drenched lawn whilst soft cushions in the fan-cooled chill-out pavilion offer respite from the heat. Bose speakers fitted throughout the living areas can be connected to an iPod so you can listen to whatever music suits your mood. The sea-view bar on the fringe of the garden and the new alfresco lounge under the shade of coconut palms are perfectly placed for sipping sunset cocktails.
Auraliya is well set up for families; the shelves of the air-conditioned TV Room are stacked with movies, books and games, and each master suite is attached to a double or twin bedroom via a spacious shared bathroom. The villa also boasts direct access onto one of Galle’s most idyllic beaches featuring a lovely turquoise lagoon protected by an offshore reef that’s perfect for swimming. Turtles often pop their heads up from the surf and translucent crabs scuttle up and down the ribbon of soft white sand beach and hide in amongst the rocks. As well as having the run of the beach, there’s also a wide stretch of lawn behind the villa where kids can play football (goalposts can be erected), volleyball or cricket, and the staff will happily make up the numbers! The villa is also kitted out with body boards, fins, masks and snorkels.
The staff, led by the wonderful Sunny, are a highlight of the villa and anticipate your needs with smiles that are always bright and welcoming. The chef’s repertoire of home cooked meals is a lovely surprise (provisions on guest account) and all laundry is included in the villa rate. Experienced massage therapists and yoga teachers can visit you at the villa upon request and even a low country dance troupe can come and put on a private performance (charges apply).

This excellent family-friendly villa sits beside a stunning swimming beach.
We thought the staff were excellent; friendly, experienced and capable. The chef was particularly enthusiastic and his cooking was fabulous. He’ll even make snacks for kids such as jammy dodgers, an all-time favourite. He will also stock the kitchen with basic provisions prior to your arrival, and prepare your first two meals so that you can arrive relaxed and at ease. There’s a Nespresso coffee machine in the villa, but as you can’t buy the capsules in Sri Lanka, you’ll need to bring some with you. If we needed anything else, the staff shopped for us and they were able to arrange transport for us to visit attractions, restaurants and the fort at Galle.
Visiting in March 2013, three years after our original review, we were pleased to discover that the villa has the same lovely staff team and is as immaculately presented as before. Each master bedroom has its own mini fridge and the villa is also now equipped with a generator.

Highlights
The wide ocean frontage, glorious sea views and safe swimming beach just a few footsteps away make a wonderful setting for a holiday. The staff are a real plus, and the home-cooked food was delicious. Auraliya’s location close to many attractions including a turtle hatchery, spice gardens, bird-filled lagoon and tea factory enhances its attraction for families as there is a lot to keep kids amused; the large stretch of lawn in the villa itself was designed especially for sports and there are plenty of cricket bats and balls available for guests to use.
Surprises
Expect to hear a little traffic noise at times, especially from the kitchen and TV room, which are closest to the road. Nighttimes are peaceful, with only the waves to lull you to sleep.
PROs
- Idyllic stretch of swimming beach
- Lovely sunset lounge
- Huge flat lawn for playing sports
- Good home-cooked food
- Twinkling fibre optic lit pool
CONs

- Occasional main road traffic noise
- Beach recedes in the summer

Location
Auraliya is located beside the idyllic Palatugaha Beach, to the east of Talpe, home to a turquoise coral lagoon, its calm waters protected from waves by an offshore reef. Auraliya’s neighbours are mostly upmarket villas, so the area is quiet and peaceful, with fishermen often the only people to be seen treading the soft sandy beach. Right next door to Auraliya is IF Villa, another luxurious property that can be directly accessed via a gate in the wall making these two villas a good choice to rent together for larger groups. The nearest shops and restaurants are a few kilometres away in Habaraduwa, along with banks and ATM machines.

About Talpe
Stretching a distance of less than ten kilometres between Unawatuna and Koggala, Talpe’s swathe of golden sand is fringed by the island’s most concentrated collection of upmarket beach villas that stand almost shoulder to shoulder facing the sea. With an idyllic position overlooking the Indian Ocean and close to the many facilities of Galle, Talpe is a small seaside village with little more than a handful of local provisions shops and local eateries to offer in terms of commerce, although tuk-tuks are aplenty and the friendly local people are well used to the sight of visitors enjoying its long stretch of sandy beach. Swimming in the sea is possible in some areas along the coastline here and is best at Dalawella whose tiny bay is protected by an offshore wall of rock that creates the inviting vision of a turquoise lagoon. Talpe’s rustic, laid-back charm invites people looking for a quiet out of the way sun spot whilst the sweeping bay of Unawatuna and all her facilities are never far away.
About South Coast
Stretching between Galle and Hambantota, the south coast is undoubtedly one of the most popular destinations in Sri Lanka. Characterised by historically significant fortified towns, numerous picture-perfect palm-fringed beaches, a sultry turquoise sea, swathes of iridescent green paddy fields fringed by lush green jungle, ancient Buddhist temples, expansive waterways, nature-filled rainforests and tea-carpeted hills it offers enough variety to be a destination in itself; fabulous for families, groups and couples alike.
Galle is one of the region’s most significant attractions for its sixteenth century Dutch fort filled with an evocatively rich collection of buildings, boutiques, museums and luxury digs that hug a peninsular to the south of town. Galle’s popular beaches are better-facilitated, more developed and safer for swimming than those in and around Tangalle, but the further you travel east the more expansive, deserted and nature-filled they become.
Surfing, snorkelling, diving, whale watching, sailing, fishing and kayaking can all be done along this magnificent stretch of coastline as well as cycling, walking and trying your hand at Sri Lankan cookery. Inland, the scene varies as the westerly wet zone’s lush jungle interior gives way to the arid dry zone plains a little beyond Tangalle. Taking off by bicycle is often the best way to explore the hills, plains, sanctuaries and jungle whilst a boat is a must to navigate the scenic lakes and rivers that wind in between.
Some of Sri Lanka’s most popular national parks – Uda Walawe for elephants and Yala for leopards and bears – as well as a trio of its most accessible rainforests – Sinharaja, Kottawa and Kanneliya - are easily visited on a day or overnight trip from anywhere along the south coast.
Rooms
The design of Auraliya – with nearly all the rooms facing a central pool area – offers plenty of privacy from the outside world. The build is symmetrical; twin corridors extending towards the sea with three bedrooms off each side and the vivid blue cruciform swimming pool lying between them. The dining and living pavilions directly face each other across the pool.
At the furthest end of each corridor are a pair of family suites, which share conduit bathrooms with generous circular terrazzo tubs, an inside and an outside shower and twin washbasins. Each suite has two bedrooms – a master with expansive sea views and huge king-size four-poster beds and a second bedroom either with a queen-size bed or a double and a single bed (able to sleep three). The final two suites (one twin and one double) are close to the dining pavilion and come with private ensuite bathrooms with terrazzo tubs, inside and outside showers and twin washbasins. All six bedrooms feature four-poster beds, cushioned dorma window seats, air conditioning and ceiling fans. Each suite is also fitted with a safe.
The living and dining pavilions are identical in structure with cool floors and high roofs; both are fan-cooled. The dining table seats 12 whilst the chill-out lounge offers direct views of the sea in cushioned comfort. Towards the rear of the property and close to the mesmerising entrance pond is an air conditioned TV Room with squashy sofas that offers the ideal scene for kicking back and watching a good movie, or catching up on the day’s news. Opposite the TV Room is the fully equipped kitchen with centre-island and extensive worktops available for guests to use, although we think this scenario is unlikely given the enthusiasm of the chef.
In the front garden is another pavilion, used as a bar and as a popular breakfast venue. Opposite, under the swaying palms, is a built-in lounge for soaking in sea and sunset views.
