The Experience
If a house could have arms and welcome you, then Kikili Beach would have you in the warmest embrace from the moment you walked through the bright orange gate. Colourful, vibrant and bursting with life this chic one-bedroom beach house just south of famous Unawatuna Bay is the most sensational spot for a delightful couple’s escape. Set in a grassy garden shaded by palms, the house is unusually built from granite; rough hewn grey walls add interesting texture to the house and complement its zingy orange and vivid blue colour scheme along with the beautifully ageing clay tiles on the floor. That a lot of love and hard work has gone into making Kikili Beach a home is obvious, and the owners’ sparkling energy shines brightly throughout. Huge cushions, lampshades and tablecloths are adorned in a kaleidoscope of colours and a variety of bold designs that are both fun and tasteful; photos, pictures and paintings provide a cheerful mood; whilst a selection of hand-picked antiques, books, games and CDs boost its homely appeal. Kikili celebrates life through comfort, colour and conviviality, and manages to feel enchantingly like home – albeit a magical home in the tropics, only footsteps from the warm turquoise embrace of the sea. Although its situation close to an excellent swimming beach is heaven enough, numerous lavish lounging locations – a romantic swing seat, an ambiant ambalama or a deep veranda – coupled with a turquoise swimming pool shimmering in the garden, mean that you will never be short of somewhere to make the most of the spectacular views; sunsets at Kikili are sensational, especially when the palm-topped silhouette of Unawatuna Bay is enhanced by the changing colours in the sky. Add to this the expertise of housekeeper and chef Kumara, who creates excellent dishes (groceries on guest account) from the bright blue kitchen and whose gentle presence is as much a part of the experience as the house itself, and you have a truly unforgettable retreat.

Highlights
There are many. Kikili’s location close to Dalawella and Unawatuna beaches is excellent as you have great swimming on your doorstep and a good selection of restaurants and bars within easy reach. It is also in an ideal spot to explore the attractions of this southern coastal area. Housekeeper Kumara enhances the experience with his wonderful cooking – you really won’t want for anything here. Other highlights include the many lounging areas, the sea views, sunsets and privacy.
Surprises
Very few. There’s only a small hot water tank so the supply tends to run out quickly, but it’s likely that you’ll be enjoying cooler showers anyway to provide respite from the tropical heat. Mosquitoes are inevitable here; use plenty of repellent and cover up at dawn and dusk.
PROs
- Blissfully bubbly interior design
- Perfectly set up for honeymooners
- Fabulous food and amazing staff
- Lovely sea view lounging spots
- Restaurants and bars close by
CONs
- Walk 200m for sea swimming

Location
Located just a fifteen minute drive south from Galle in the picturesque fishing village of Dalawella, Kikili Beach directly overlooks the deep blue of the Indian Ocean. Fishermen can often be seen casting their lines from the beach or sitting atop stilts in the sea. Ships frequently ply the horizon. Although you can swim in the sea just outside the villa (from November to April) there’s a tranquil turquoise lagoon just a five minute walk away that is favoured by families with children. A good beach restaurant is also located here; think wood-fired pizzas, fresh seafood, sunset cocktails and a relaxed tropical ambiance. Nearby Unawatuna Bay is protected by a reef and offers some of the best year-round swimming on the island. Whilst there are a few grocery shops within walking distance from Kikili where you can get basic items, you’ll find supermarkets, money changing facilities, post offices and banks in historic Galle, which is just seven kilometres away and easily accessible by three-wheeler or car.

About Talpe
Stretching a distance of less than ten kilometres between Unawatuna and Koggala, Talpe’s swathe of golden sand is fringed by the island’s most concentrated collection of upmarket beach villas that stand almost shoulder to shoulder facing the sea. With an idyllic position overlooking the Indian Ocean and close to the many facilities of Galle, Talpe is a small seaside village with little more than a handful of local provisions shops and local eateries to offer in terms of commerce, although tuk-tuks are aplenty and the friendly local people are well used to the sight of visitors enjoying its long stretch of sandy beach. Swimming in the sea is possible in some areas along the coastline here and is best at Dalawella whose tiny bay is protected by an offshore wall of rock that creates the inviting vision of a turquoise lagoon. Talpe’s rustic, laid-back charm invites people looking for a quiet out of the way sun spot whilst the sweeping bay of Unawatuna and all her facilities are never far away.
About South Coast
Stretching between Galle and Hambantota, the south coast is undoubtedly one of the most popular destinations in Sri Lanka. Characterised by historically significant fortified towns, numerous picture-perfect palm-fringed beaches, a sultry turquoise sea, swathes of iridescent green paddy fields fringed by lush green jungle, ancient Buddhist temples, expansive waterways, nature-filled rainforests and tea-carpeted hills it offers enough variety to be a destination in itself; fabulous for families, groups and couples alike.
Galle is one of the region’s most significant attractions for its sixteenth century Dutch fort filled with an evocatively rich collection of buildings, boutiques, museums and luxury digs that hug a peninsular to the south of town. Galle’s popular beaches are better-facilitated, more developed and safer for swimming than those in and around Tangalle, but the further you travel east the more expansive, deserted and nature-filled they become.
Surfing, snorkelling, diving, whale watching, sailing, fishing and kayaking can all be done along this magnificent stretch of coastline as well as cycling, walking and trying your hand at Sri Lankan cookery. Inland, the scene varies as the westerly wet zone’s lush jungle interior gives way to the arid dry zone plains a little beyond Tangalle. Taking off by bicycle is often the best way to explore the hills, plains, sanctuaries and jungle whilst a boat is a must to navigate the scenic lakes and rivers that wind in between.
Some of Sri Lanka’s most popular national parks – Uda Walawe for elephants and Yala for leopards and bears – as well as a trio of its most accessible rainforests – Sinharaja, Kottawa and Kanneliya - are easily visited on a day or overnight trip from anywhere along the south coast.
Rooms
The entrance to Kikili takes you straight into the living room which is the heart of the house. This appealing room is furnished with a squashy coral- and white-striped sofa that gazes across the veranda and out towards the sea. Antique cabinets hold china, glassware and books whilst a CD player with selection of both chilled and upbeat tunes sets the tone. In common with the floors throughout the property, the living room floor is clay tiled, blanketed here and there with inviting, warm rugs. To the right of the living room is a bright blue circular kitchen that, although small, features everything you might need – even stocks of wine! The bedroom, to the left of the living room, overlooks the garden and has a four-poster king-size bed dressed in silky soft linen. At night a heavy velvet curtain is theatrically swept across in place of a door to the sitting room and you have the choice of air conditioning or a ceiling fan to keep cool. Shelves are filled with a wonderful selection of books that offer the potential for filling many hours of the day. The bathroom is ensuite with power shower and personal collection of toiletries. Directly in front of the sitting room are double doors onto a deep veranda. It has spectacular views of the sea and is a wonderful place to while away the hours as the ocean plays a constant melody in the background. To one end of the veranda is a pale blue concrete L-shaped sofa brimming with cushions. At the other end is a dining table for eight that also overlooks the garden and sea. In between are two floral-cushioned lounge chairs that recline peacefully in front of a small, tucked away bar. In the walled garden, and making the most of the sea views, is a coconut-thatched ambalama (pavilion) adorned with comfortable cushions. It’s a great spot for yoga and a mellow place to chill at any time of the day. There’s also a gorgeous ocean-view swing seat that sways as if you are actually out on the sea yourself, and a couple of sun loungers on the lawn offer yet more idyllic options for rest and relaxation.
