The Experience
A luxurious hideaway set amongst green hills, Selong Selo offers a chance to slow down and take a break from the hectic pace of life. The secluded estate is nestled amongst green forested hills, overlooking Selong Belanak Beach.
The arresting views are one of the most alluring attributes of these villas. Large floor-to-ceiling glass windows maximise on opportunities to gaze at nature’s beauty. It is almost unbelievable, for a place to be so picture-perfect. The colours of the water change hues as the day goes by, from sea green to turquoise blue. It is a sight that one only finds on the covers of travel magazines.
The two-bedroom villas feature contemporary fully equipped kitchens and modern interiors. A private infinity pool spells the ultimate luxurious experience. Each villa has its own pool, and a wooden deck with casual seating to enjoy the endless views.
The villas are maintained by daily housekeeping services and the estate offers shuttle service as well as in-house dining at Aura Lounge and Bar. A canopied spa beckons you to get a relaxing massage, though you can choose to get one in the comfort of your own villa.
Selong Selo’s two-bedroom villas are ideal for a family with two or three children or two couples with tiny tots.

Perfect luxury getaway for a family or two couples, with your own private pool
Waking up to the sound of crickets, we would make tea in the sleek kitchen and carry it outside, to sit on the deck and watch the countryside wake up. It was such a wonderfully relaxed way to start your day, in sharp contrast to alarm bells and hurried mornings back home.
The location allows you to get the best views in the area, because if you’re right on the beach, you won’t be able to appreciate how it sits prettily amongst green jungles. The shuttle would take us down to the beach everyday, for us to get our fill of surf, sand and sunsets.
Though we usually dined at Aura, the estate’s restaurant or ordered from the in-villa dining menu, my partner decided to cook us a meal on one occasion. The butler was kind enough to do market shopping for us and even offered to have a chef assist us in the food preparation within our villa (for an additional charge).
The villa is perfect for a couple with two children, like us, or even two couples. The rooms are spread out and we had our privacy despite being in the villa for most of the day.
All in all, an absolutely wonderful vacation, leaving us recharged and refreshed. A little slice of tranquility, which is not to be found often these days.

About Selong Belanak
Hidden from the crowds, at the southern end of Lombok, lies Selong Belanak Beach - the best surfing spot on the island for beginners. The white secluded beach has powdery sand which turns almost light grey with fainting sun rays. The beach extends into semi-rural villages with lush green paddy fields rising up into the Jabon Hills.
Tropical forests carpet the hills as they tower over the semi-circular bay, with breathtaking views of turquoise water that seems to change colour as the day goes by. A holiday in Selong Belanak is quiet and peaceful, a chance to slow down and witness local villagers go about their daily life. Located on the south-west coast, it offers spectacular sunsets viewed from various points, both on the beach and on top of the hills.
Things to do in Selong Belanak vary according to the amount of exertion you prefer. The surf is great for beginner surfers and a handful of surfing rental shops and schools can be found at the beach. For a more relaxed day, enjoy a picture-perfect picnic under a white canopied tent on a secluded beach or amongst the dense foliage. Fishing tours are also a great way to immerse yourself in the local culture. The bay transforms into a sheet of twinkling lights at night, because of all the lobster fishing boats parked in the water.
The sleepy town of Kuta is located 17 kilometres away, and offers an assortment of eclectic restaurants ranging from a greenhouse-style vegetarian cafe to a typical Aussie bistro and an Italian trattoria. It also has souvenir shops where you can pick up something to take back home. Selong Belanak is at a distance of 21 kilometres from the international airport.
About Lombok
Lombok, Bali’s beautiful next-door neighbour, rarely receives the attention she deserves. Although there are only 35km of sea between these two islands, the physical and cultural distinctions are considerable. Towering mountains, mighty waterfalls, pristine white-sand beaches, magnificent coral reefs, pearl encrusted shores, a unique Sasak culture and tranquillity are among Lombok’s many charms.
In general, Lombok entices the more adventurous travellers who have, perhaps, already explored Bali and are hungry to journey further afield. The island is also a haven for those in search of peace and quiet. A visit to Lombok is an opportunity to explore a natural paradise, trek the Rinjani National Park, enjoy some fantastic diving and snorkelling, surf some of the best waves in Indonesia, and encounter a traditional, rural way of life exposing a fascinating integration of Muslim and Hindu cultures. Visitors are welcomed at the splendid Sasak festivals and Hindu ceremonies, and the island produces some remarkable handicrafts. In the tiny villages artisans can be seen at work creating textiles, baskets and pots.
Predictions in the early ‘90s that Lombok was following fast on the heels of Bali in terms of tourism were never actually realised. Likewise it is a misconception to view Lombok as the Bali of 20 years ago, comparisons are inevitable but contrasts are marked and the two islands differ in almost every respect.
The beaches in Lombok are beautiful. The roller-coaster road hugs the dramatic coastline around cool coconut groves, sweeping bays and towering headlands. Although there are a few luxury hotels and villas in the area north of Senggigi, huge expanses of Lombok’s shores are totally undeveloped with just a few small villages dotted inland. Many of the beaches are festooned with candy-coloured jukung. These traditional canoe-shaped fishing vessels are crafted from a single hollowed out tree trunk, with bamboo outriggers and a distinctive prow decorated and shaped like a marlin’s head. Some of the island’s most spectacular coastal scenery can be found on the southern shores. Windswept sandy beaches and picturesque bays are separated by headlands and awesome rocky outcrops. The glorious crescent-shaped beaches of Lombok’s Kuta (often confused with Bali’s Kuta) and Tanjung Aan are famous for their surf breaks, and when the tide is out, the bays turn into shallow pools of turquoise water.
In October 2011, Lombok's long awaited Bandara International Airport opened near the township of Praya, about 40km south of Lombok's capital, Mataram, and approximately a two-hour drive from the north-west of the island, which is home to most of Lombok's luxury private villas. Although this new airport currently (Jan 2013) only offers international flights from Singapore (Silkair) and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (Air Asia), regular connecting flights from Bali's Denpasar Airport take only 25 minutes.
Rooms
The two-bedroom villas are designed such that the bedrooms flank the living areas on either side. Each guest has privacy, along with the opportunity to get together in the living room.
Each room has an ensuite bathroom, spacious enough to be a bedroom in itself. Some of them have self-standing bathtubs, with sliding doors in front, which open up to sea views.
One of the rooms has a king-size bed and the other has double beds which can be split into twins. The rooms have glass doors as well, which open up onto the timber deck.
A large living area connects both the bedrooms. It includes a comfortable living room with sofas and a flat-screen television. The centre of the room is taken up by a wooden dining table, seating at least six. In the other corner, a contemporary kitchen invites amateur and experienced cooks to try their hand at making a delicious meal. The kitchen is fully equipped and has a refrigerator.
The interiors are sophisticated yet warm, blending traditional elements with modern touches. Glass sliding doors cover one entire side of the villa, opening up onto the deck and framing the pool outside.
A private infinity pool is surrounded by casual seating on the wooden deck and looks out towards the blue sea and the skies above.
