The Experience
With its magnificent coastal setting, the Villa Angsoka experience is all about the ocean, which provides breathtaking views, a safe swimming area, and ample opportunities for snorkelling and fishing. As if the sea views weren’t enough, turning your back to the ocean presents a lush backdrop of coconut groves and banana plantations, with Mount Agung – the sacred realm of the Balinese gods – looming over the tree tops. The contemporary, tropical design of the villa incorporates three spacious double-storey pavilions sprawled across the seafront. Walls and floors of white stone and creamy terrazzo create a sense of cool freshness, blended with the warmth of wood shingle roofs and lime-washed recycled teak staircases, window and door frames. Immaculate lawns, a sparkling emerald sea, pale green batik furnishings and decorative turquoise wood carvings add colour and softness. Staff in bright uniforms are friendly, courteous, professional, and adept at anticipating every whim. Complimentary breakfasts are generous affairs, best enjoyed from the open-sided seafront bale (pavilion), while Indonesian and Western meals can be ordered from a fixed price lunch/dinner menu and prepared in the staff kitchen. There is also a well-equipped guest kitchen for those who wish to self cater, including a fridge stocked with juices, wines and beers (on guest account). The town of Candidasa is a mere three kilometres away with plenty of restaurants and souvenir shops to choose from. The villa is a good choice for groups and families (there is no railing on the seaside wall, so may not be ideal for toddlers), with a large comfortable space incorporating two separate dining areas, six well appointed bedrooms, generous infinity pool, gym, massage room and plenty of lounge areas furnished with daybeds, sofas and planters’ chairs, including a timber sun deck. There is no natural beach here, but a wide stretch of sand creates a man-made beach above the sea wall, from which steps lead directly into the ocean. Manager Nyoman is a keen surfer and happy to take guests to nearby breaks. He can also organise fishing, and beach trips, and visits to nearby dive and snorkelling sites. Boogie boards, snorkelling and fishing equipment are all complimentary. Angsoka is part of the Siri Mendira Beach Villas estate, with two adjacent four-bedroom villas (Villa Cempaka and Villa Bakung), making the property suitable for weddings and groups.

Highlights
We felt utterly spoilt by the spaciousness, the views, the big tropical breakfasts, and the supreme comfort – especially the huge beds with the softest of linens and deliciously decadent oversize pillows. Attentive staff took good care of us without ever cramping our style.
Surprises
Although there is a sandy area in front of the villa, there is no natural beach, but we were happy to sprawl on the grass beside the pool. The coral in front of the villa was damaged and not so colourful, but there were plenty of tropical fish, and a short boat ride leads to good snorkelling sites.
PROs
- Panoramic ocean views
- Seriously spacious
- Peace and tranquility
- Contemporary luxury
- Lush forest views
CONs
- Limited toiletries in bathrooms
- No generator
- No beach
- Sea wall slippery when wet

Location
Villa Angsoka is set in the tranquil fishing village of Sengkidu, three kilometres from Candidasa, on Bali’s east coast. A lane shaded with banana plantations and coconut groves leads through the village, past temples, small shops selling soft drinks and snacks, and the occasional villa and small guesthouses with basic restaurant attached. A few hundred metres from the villa is the four-star Candi Beach Cottage Hotel, with a restaurant and bar, and beyond, near the main road is a sports field and banjar building where the Balinese village community meets. The sea in front of the villas, where you can see fish and patches of coral, is suitable for swimming and snorkelling.

About Candidasa
Boasting rich heritage value, the quiet seaside village of Candidasa lies close to many of Bali's most important historical landmarks and ancient palaces. This beautiful and under-developed area is set in the island’s eastern regency of Karangasem, far away from the crowds, with Mt. Agung, Bali’s most sacred and mystical volcano providing a dramatic backdrop to the scene.
Things to do in Candidasa include visits to charming restaurants and souvenir shops where you can pick up a trinket or two. You will also find a few basic mini-marts here to stock up on essentials. The 700-year-old walled village of Tenganan is nearby, where the residents practise a time-honoured lifestyle based around ritual and ceremony. The fortress-like village has become a living museum, and many of the houses also function as shops and workshops where expert craftsmen and women perform their centuries’ old skills.
The beach at Candidasa is sandy and golden, albeit narrow due to erosion. There is a beautiful beach known as Pasir Putih five kilometres to the east and snorkelling and diving off Candidasa is good with some excellent sites close to the shore, accessible by local boats. Padang Bai Harbour, the stepping off point for Lombok, is a further nine kilometres around the bay, and here you will find the Blue Lagoon, another superb snorkelling and dive site.
About Bali
Bali is Indonesia’s most popular tourist location and is considered one of Asia's premier tropical island destinations. Steeped in history and renowned for its artistic way of life, Bali is a peaceful contrast to some of the more frantic destinations Asia has to offer.
The inner peace and creative talents of the Balinese has attracted artists the world over fascinated by local dancers, silversmiths, wood carvers, potters and painters that seem to pervade throughout the island. The abundant verdant fields and surrounding sea have long supplied Bali with an easy surplus of food leaving time for life’s more artistic past times. As a result everything in Bali has a creative and religious element centred around the local Banjar (residents association) – little, adorned temples are everywhere, doors are covered in intricate carvings, huge kites ward off evil spirits and colourful roadside ceremonies bring traffic to a standstill.
Bali is a popular destination principally from Australia and Asia but also from all over Europe. The island welcomes thousands of visitors each year to a relaxing lifestyle, stunning beaches, world class surf, vibrant villages, and spectacular scenery all with an exquisite tropical climate. Located approximately two hours’ flying time from Singapore the island is serviced by an international airport at Denpasar with direct flights to and from many major cities in Asia, Europe and Australia and many more via Jakarta, Indonesia’s capital.
The island offers an impressive range of leisure and lifestyle amenities including world-class golf courses, wonderful seascapes for surfing, diving and snorkelling as well as luxurious spas, chic boutiques, tropical forests, towering volcanoes and international cuisine.
Rooms
The villa combines outdoor/indoor living spaces with wonderful views from every room. Water lilies line the entrance into the spacious open-sided, fan-cooled lounge pavilion with panoramic views over the pool and ocean. Here, a long wooden dining table seats 14, on either side of which are two generous built-in corner lounge suites with teal cushions and glass-topped coffee tables scattered with books and magazines. Alcoves are filled with curios, and additional sofas are arranged at the front. The guest kitchen opens onto the lounge, with black granite counters and timber cupboards stacked with everything you could possibly need to self cater. The softly lit TV lounge has a comfortable sofa, decent selection of books, and 42’-inch flat-screen Satellite TV, with CD, DVD player and iPod dock. The 20m infinity pool has 12 deck chairs shaded with umbrellas, and a large bale (pavilion) providing an additional 14-seat dining table. Six comfortable ensuite bedrooms are minimally adorned, with little to distract from the ocean views. Features common to master and guest bedrooms include air conditioning and ceiling fans, four-poster super king-size beds (200cm x 200cm), built in latticed timber wardrobes, varnished floor boards, glass sliding doors, creamy drapes and simple bedside tables and lamps. Contemporary bathrooms sport creamy, fresh colour schemes, and are equipped with rain shower, bathtub, extensive mirrors and modern fittings, including twin vanity units with rectangular counter-top sinks perched on black granite counters. The two large, equal-size master bedrooms occupy opposite wings on the second floor, with glass doors opening onto a spacious deck with built-in day beds. Each has a tall sloping ceiling of rattan and wood, and is furnished with wooden desk, chaise longue, soft luxurious mosquito net, and vibrant, turquoise-hued wood carvings. Walk-through wardrobes lead to spacious bathrooms with palm-grove views, sofa, indoor bathtub and open-air shower. The two smaller bedrooms upstairs in the main pavilion are perhaps most suitable for children or teenagers, with tables made from colourful wooden fishing boats and adornments of decorative animal-shaped money boxes. However, with king-size beds, outdoor daybeds and spectacular views, they are also appropriate for adults. Behind these bedrooms a small gym has a running machine, weights and Pilates ball, and a separate massage room has two professional massage beds. A masseuse is on call. Two downstairs bedrooms are set on either side of the main pavilion. Their bathrooms are fitted with built in cupboards, a courtyard bath tub and views of banana trees through the open panels, while private verandas are furnished with wooden planters’ chairs and have views over the lawn and sea.
