The Experience
Tassana Pra means to ‘gaze upon the Buddha’, but with so much else to admire at this beautiful Thai villa, unobstructed views of Samui's most famous temple are just part of the overall effect. Set on a forested hillside, the villa’s teak pavilions were transported overland from the ancient Thai capital of Ayutthaya and reconstructed over a period of two years. A traditional, open-plan design and meticulous attention to detail make staying at Tassana Pra a real heritage experience – an impressive achievement on an island generally known as a modern, western influenced holiday destination. The villa will appeal to families, groups or individuals in search of a more authentic Thai atmosphere, but with the convenience of ‘touristville’ close by.
The villa exudes traditional Thai ambiance: pillared interiors rise to vaulted timber ceilings with polished wooden floors and original door and window frames creating a feeling of tranquil nostalgia. Cabinets, desks and traditional celadon vases are carefully placed throughout, with exquisite arrangements of exotic flowers decorating tables and intricate Thai artwork adorning the walls. The wide, partially shaded balcony that fronts the main living area features a long, antique table and built-in daybeds that provide the perfect spot to sit and read, gather for refreshments or simply drift into the views. Immediately below, a second terrace connects to the free-form pool and extensive garden, ideal for lounging between dips during the day. Majestic four-poster beds and quaint wooden dressers and trunks continue the heritage theme through to the main bedrooms while spacious, well-fitted ensuite bathrooms with sunken tubs add contemporary indulgence. Two of the upstairs bedrooms also boast sheltered private terraces overlooking the mature garden, which slopes down to a terraced pond and gazebo providing yet more opportunities for peaceful retreat.
Even the staff add to the authenticity at Tassana Pra. A Thai couple live on site and manage the property, welcoming guests with informed gentility and taking care of the house with obvious pride. They also prepare sumptuous Thai and Western meals from a varied selection menu (breakfast is included, provisioning for other meals is on guests' account).

Authentic Thai architecture and stunning setting makes this one of Samui's most appealing properties
The master and upstairs guest bedrooms are also worthy of special mention. They are decorated with such delicate antique style you could be forgiven for thinking you'd been invited to a royal residence. The master suite’s dressing room definitely gives this part of the villa a stately ambiance, with the large wooden dresser and built-in panelled wardrobes fit for most princesses.
Whichever spot you choose, the views and surroundings at Tassana Pra inspire a sense of quiet contentment. The managers, Khun Aoy and Khun Wally, could easily be characters from a Victorian novel. Their calm dedication to duty, smiling faces and knowledge of all things relevant make them as much a feature of the house as its stunning architecture.

Highlights
The architectural style of the house offers a constant and delightful reminder that you are in Thailand. The free-form swimming pool overlooking Big Buddha bay is impossible to resist and the balcony opening out from the living room is the perfect place to sit and enjoy the superb views.
Surprises
The downstairs bedroom is very close to the main kitchen and its ensuite is the only bathroom without a tub. Because the the villa is located up a steep side road on a secluded hillside above Plai Lem, it’s quite tricky to reach – but then, once you arrive, there’s a fair chance you won’t want to leave again anyway. The road leading up to the villa has started to see a lot of construction in recent years, but with such a large area of land Tassana Pra can still guarantee privacy and space, and there’s no construction in the immediate surroundings. It is quite close to the airport, however, so plane noise can be an occasional issue, yet it’s interesting to watch the planes come in.
PROs
- Devoted and charming villa staff
- Stunning heritage home with superb views
- Comfortable and beautifully decorated interiors
- A true one of a kind villa.
CONs
- Some air traffic noise
- 4th bedroom is quite close to kitchen

Location
Tassana Pra sits on a hillside overlooking Big Buddha beach (1km) and its famous namesake, the Big Buddha temple (0.5km). A steep access road leads up to the back of the villa from Plai Leam, a small village with its own temple that's also home to a few local shops and restaurants. There's a vibrant local seafood and vegetable market on the coast just below the villa where the road meets the bay. The closest stretch of sand is Big Buddha beach, a popular residential area that also boasts a number of low key beach resorts and the main boat piers to outlying islands. Although not the island's finest beach, it's generally quiet and the main strip behind it, part of Bang Rak village, is lined with small shops, bars and restaurants, with everything you might need on a holiday from sunglasses to medical treatments.

About Bang Rak-Big Buddha
Easy access to the airport, plus ferry piers to neighbouring islands make Big Buddha beach a popular spot for people arriving and leaving Samui. Bang Rak village has its own appeal with hotels, bungalows, restaurants and bars catering to both short- and long-stay visitors. A three-kilometre stretch of road sees local village life blending with tourist amenities, which gives the area its own special character. The temple at Wat Phra Yai is home to the 12m-tall Big Buddha statue, Samui’s most famous landmark. At the base of the temple shops and restaurants cater to the needs of devotees and tourist alike. From there, the often deserted beach stretches west and is one of Koh Samui’s calmer stretches of coast, the long, wide bay blessed with tranquil waters all year round. The village itself runs behind the beach and has a friendly local feel with glimpses of the island's more traditional way of life. There's a busy fish, fruit and vegetable market and traditional Thai-style roadside restaurants mixed in with more up-market beachside dining options offering international cuisine. A number of minimarts offer a selection of beers, spirits and international wine as well as fresh bread, cakes, pastries, and snacks. Koh Samui’s quaint and colourful airport is just around the corner.
About Koh Samui
The third largest island in Thailand, Koh Samui is just 21km at its widest point and 25km at its longest. The hinterland consists of forested limestone hills and the shoreline is made up of countless coconut palm-fringed beaches and bays.
Traditionally a coconut plantation and fisherman's haven, in the last few years the island has grown into a major holiday destination with regular connections to Bangkok and direct flights from Hong Kong and Singapore. Despite rapid development, Samui is small enough to retain its charm and its modest size also makes it a convenient, laid back location even during busy seasons.
As well as fine beaches, Samui is known for recreation, relaxation and fine food. The blue waters of the Thai Gulf provide a wealth of possibility for water sports, while on land the island is well known for its professional and indulgent spas and health retreats. Fresh seafood is a specialty at most of Samui's restaurants, but you can also enjoy food from almost every corner of the globe thanks to the island's strong international influences.
Each beach on Samui has its own particular character and ambience. The east coast beaches of Chaweng and Lamai are busy, commercial areas with everything from beach vendors to fast food chains, while to the north, Bang Rak and Bo Phut have a more relaxed local village atmosphere. Beaches like Lipa Noi and Laem Set on the western and southern shores feel much more remote and untouched.
Koh Samui combines comfort and convenience with a sense of real escape and this has made it a popular choice for residential as well as tourist development. The island is an eclectic blend of nature and sophistication, one that draws repeat visitors every year to indulge in its tropical delights.
Rooms
As you enter through dramatic, double gates and continue down the red stone driveway through well-established, intricately landscaped gardens with a network of streams, ponds and waterfalls, you are very much aware of Tassana Pra’s spaciousness.
An ornate covered walkway crosses a lily pond, leading to a flight of steps which rise to enter the villa on the first floor. Large carved wood doors featuring Thai dancers announce your arrival into the living area, where floor-to-ceiling windows and doors open onto a partially covered balcony overlooking the garden and swimming pool, offering vistas of the ocean and islands beyond. As well as two large daybeds, ideal for afternoon siestas or massages, the balcony features a long wooden dining table which seats ten. Back inside, the living room is a comfortable haven, with traditional English-style sofas and chairs set amongst a collection of Thai artefacts; exposed beams and pillars supporting the vaulted wooden ceilings. A TV, DVD and iPod docking station ensure that indoor entertainment is on hand when required. In the adjacent dining area, a second dining table sits by a large cabinet, behind which a small steward’s kitchen is used to prepare breakfast.
Three air conditioned bedrooms can be found on this level. The master bedroom, with its king-size four-poster bed and a private balcony overlooking the grounds, has its own separate dressing room with built-in wardrobes and an antique dresser. The windows all have netting so can be opened without fear of mosquitoes. The second bedroom also features a king-size bed and private balcony and the third bedroom, with a queen bed and a single bed, is perfect for children, or a small family. All three of these bedrooms have ensuite bathrooms with deep bathtubs and separate shower areas with small inside gardens.
Downstairs, a fourth air conditioned bedroom (more modern in style) offers a king-size bed and an ensuite bathroom with glass-walled shower. The main kitchen is nearby, fully equipped and staffed. A door to the right leads out onto a terrace that connects to the free-form swimming pool. The pool is surrounded by tropical foliage which drops down the hillside revealing a spectacular view all the way to the Angthong National Marine Park.
