The Experience
Plentifully provided by the ocean and the sky, water plays an essential role in the spiritual lives of the Balinese Hindus and in the rice cultivation of the island. It’s also the source of Villa Atacaya’s architectural inspiration. From the water gardens on the villa’s upper tier to the natural spring that wells up beside the courtyard, water is the predominant element. And from the infinity pool to the rice-field irrigation canal, which meanders past the river-rock soaking tub off the master bathroom before cascading into the scenic river at the property’s outmost boundary, water flows supreme.
The majority of Bali’s villas are dependent upon bore water from private wells, and when Atacaya was under construction, the water-borers discovered a natural spring, deep under the ground. The spring is now a significant feature of this holiday home, bubbling from a fountain into a sacred pond alongside a water temple, and providing an enchanting view from the alfresco dining area and two of the villa’s five bedrooms.
White-walled structures, ironwood shingle roofs, indigenous stone, and gold, silver and copper-coloured slate finishes reflect the purity of the jungle setting and the beauty of the surroundings: the bamboo groves, the coconut palms and the towering mature trees. Guests will be lulled by the perpetual rush of the river and the sound of birdsong, and charmed by the sight of huge butterflies as well as fleeting glimpses of iridescent blue and turquoise kingfishers. Beside the river, a yoga platform and a balé bengong ‘dreaming’ pavilion (also the perfect spot for a massage), will take care of guests’ spiritual needs.
Meanwhile, to satisfy more corporeal cravings, ‘your wish is my command’ butlers are on hand to keep gourmet delights and iced drinks flowing as dependably as the river. A suggestion menu is available and a car and driver is available for up to eight hours a day at an additional cost. Groceries and beverages are charged at cost price plus 20% handling fee which is subject to service charge and government tax. Villa Atacaya can be rented in conjunction with the next-door, four-bedroom Villa Iskandar, jointly known as ‘Nyanyi Riverside Villas’, making this the perfect destination choice for large groups.

Highlights
Ahhhh the serenity. Villa Atacaya is such a peaceful oasis with only the river, the birds, the insects and the frogs providing the soundtrack. The hanging garden, alfresco bathtub, water features and chic interiors all deserve a mention, while the Indonesian nasi campur that we ordered for dinner was one of the best we’ve ever had – the chef is a master indeed.
Surprises
Mind your footing (especially when wet) on the polished concrete floors! The TV room set up is a little strange: a 54-inch TV in a very narrow air-con room doesn’t really make for decent viewing. However, if fan-cooled air is enough for you, open the doors and use the lounge space (complete with surround sound), and you’ll be loving it. Bring your sunglasses as the predominantly white design can get a bit glary.
PROs
- Riverside jungle bliss
- Beautiful watergardens
- Birdlife heaven
- Rural Bali charm
- Chef is a design genius
CONs
- Not the place for toddlers
- TV room design confusion
- Slippery polished concrete floors
- Anti-glare sunglasses required

Location
There is nothing immediately surrounding Villa Atacaya and its neighbour, Villa Iskandar, except a small Balinese village with a couple of local shops selling canned drinks, snacks and cigarettes, and a whole lot of greenery and agriculture. A stay at Villa Atacaya offers a beautiful opportunity to explore the lamented ‘lost’ Bali on foot (or with the inclusive car and driver). Three kilometres down the road in the direction of the setting sun is Nyanyi Beach, a black-sand beauty with a couple of other local shops selling more of the same.

About Seseh-Tanah Lot
A few kilometres north-west of Canggu, a towering banyan, sacred in many cultures, heralds the turning towards Seseh, a traditional beachside village approached via an avenue of coconut palms.
Seseh and its tiny neighbouring villages of Sogsogan and Cemagi still retain the customs and culture of old Bali. Here, you will see farmers in conical hats riding rusty old upright bicycles, as well as frequent, colourful processions leading to Seseh’s large beachside temple. You might just see a barong (a high-spirited, benevolent beast representing the power of good; danced by two men inside an ornate costume) dancing on the street. The good news, for folks who want to immerse themselves in the customs and culture of old Bali, is that the villagers encourage and welcome congenial visitors.
Although you can now find a few private rental villas in these three villages, they have seamlessly integrated without detracting from the simplicity and charm of the location. This is an ideal destination for those who want to get lost in the beauty of the countryside, and for those who want to engage with the local people and gain privileged insights into the Balinese Hindu lifestyle.
A little further up the coast is Tanah Lot, famous for its dramatic and venerated sea temple, which is perched on a craggy wave-lashed rock at the edge of the glistening black shoreline. It is probably the most photographed sight in Bali, especially in the late afternoon when its splendid profile is silhouetted against the setting sun. One of the top things to do in the Seseh-Tanah Lot area is to tee off at the 18-hole, 72-par, championship-standard Nirwana Bali Golf Club, frequently voted as the number one golf course in Asia. This, however, still remains a remote area with few facilities other than the souvenir stalls and simple eateries within the temple grounds, and three international restaurants within Pan Pacific Nirwana Bali Resort.
About Bali
Bali is Indonesia’s most popular tourist location and is considered one of Asia's premier tropical island destinations. Steeped in history and renowned for its artistic way of life, Bali is a peaceful contrast to some of the more frantic destinations Asia has to offer.
The inner peace and creative talents of the Balinese has attracted artists the world over fascinated by local dancers, silversmiths, wood carvers, potters and painters that seem to pervade throughout the island. The abundant verdant fields and surrounding sea have long supplied Bali with an easy surplus of food leaving time for life’s more artistic past times. As a result everything in Bali has a creative and religious element centred around the local Banjar (residents association) – little, adorned temples are everywhere, doors are covered in intricate carvings, huge kites ward off evil spirits and colourful roadside ceremonies bring traffic to a standstill.
Bali is a popular destination principally from Australia and Asia but also from all over Europe. The island welcomes thousands of visitors each year to a relaxing lifestyle, stunning beaches, world class surf, vibrant villages, and spectacular scenery all with an exquisite tropical climate. Located approximately two hours’ flying time from Singapore the island is serviced by an international airport at Denpasar with direct flights to and from many major cities in Asia, Europe and Australia and many more via Jakarta, Indonesia’s capital.
The island offers an impressive range of leisure and lifestyle amenities including world-class golf courses, wonderful seascapes for surfing, diving and snorkelling as well as luxurious spas, chic boutiques, tropical forests, towering volcanoes and international cuisine.
Rooms
Integrated into the banks of the Yeh river, Villa Atacaya is built on three levels and entered from the top tier via a water garden which lies below a vertical rock garden planted with orchids and tree ferns. Here, a splendid open-sided living and dining room is furnished with sofas and chairs around a coffee table plus a solid wood dining table for 12, and adorned with a huge painting and a statue of a reclining Buddha. Next to the dining area is a self-contained, small-yet-fully-equipped kitchen. Accommodation on the middle tier is arranged around a sunny courtyard and, to one side, the villa’s sacred pond. Facing the courtyard, a second open-sided lounge area is flanked at one end by a bar and by a small air-conditioned TV room (equipped with a 54-inch flat-screen TV, blu-ray disc player and multiple external speakers) at the other. The doors can be folded open to extend the TV room into the living space, enabling larger groups to enjoy movies. Furnishing the courtyard is a glass-topped dining table with 12 white metal chairs that are rendered almost invisible against the white paving and bright white walls of the bedroom pavilions. As night falls, a striking feature here is the ‘dancing flames’ of a gas-driven fire bowl filled with water. On the far side of the courtyard, the 15m infinity pool appears to overflow into the river; it is bordered by a sun deck, furnished with six sun beds and two umbrellas. All five bedrooms are equipped with air conditioning, ceiling fans, satellite channel TVs and DVD players, and furnished with king beds, all have views of the river or the sacred pond, and all have distinct colour themes and stylish ensuite bathrooms fitted with standing rain showers. Four of the bedrooms are accessed from the courtyard and one from the riverside. From the master, a pair of colourful carved Balinese doors leads to a private water garden where a river-rock bathtub for two rests open to the sky. A spiral staircase winds down to a riverside yoga deck sheltered by a rustic bamboo roof draped in tumbling thunbergia and birds-nest ferns. Also on this lowest level are a balé relaxation pavilion and the fifth bedroom, both with glorious views of the river.
