The Experience
The style and thought that’s gone into Villa Bukit Naga (meaning dragon on the hill) is apparent as soon as you arrive. An imposing entrance of carved teak and Taro stone, flanked by lichen-covered elephant fountains sets the scene. Fling open the doors to be greeted by a life-size Burmese statue and a team of 14 beautifully-trained staff led by the charming Parta. Beyond, the swimming pool spills into the gorge far below where the Sang Sang and Tengkung rivers merge. The sweet smell of frangipani, bougainvillea and orchids fill the air, colourful butterflies fly amongst the lush vegetation and junglescape. Cast iron lanterns light up terraces whilst Chinese lamps spread a warm glow inside.
From the intricate doors hand-carved by the craftsmen of Sukawati to the Palimanan stone trim, from the Javanese marbled bathrooms to the Merbau wood ceilings and floors, Nyoman Miyoga, the architect of Villa Bukit Naga, has created a wonderful retreat of true Balinese style and workmanship. Add to this the owners’ chic Asian-influenced taste in interiors – a small Vishnu statue here, an antique birdcage there, an imposing brass reclining Buddha, or Mao propaganda posters on the study walls – and you get a delightful blend of style and comfort. 18th century Chinese cabinets sit effortlessly alongside a 42-inch LCD TV complete with hundreds of DVDs; an iPod player and cappuccino coffee maker comfortably mix with primitive stone sculptures nestling in begonias and fan palms; cavernous bedrooms complete with romantically draped four-posters come fully air-conditioned.
Whether you want to stay in and be pampered by the delightful staff or stray to a local spa in Ubud, to shop in nearby Sukawati, to ride elephants in Taro or snorkel in Candidasa, Villa Bukit Naga has something for everyone. The villa comes with two complimentry cars for guests to use for local trips (additional minimal costs for journeys further afield). The chef and her team deliver exquisite food on a hotel menu basis (but very reasonably priced) but will accommodate your personal tastes if need be. Villa Bukit Naga is particularly popular with families, but small groups looking for a truly authentic and memorable Balinese experience will find the villa perfect too.

Tucked away overlooking a quiet river valley, the architect has created a real gem.

Highlights
Choosing one highlight is quite difficult as there are so many. The architect has done a fabulous job in blending the villa’s three buildings into a gorgeous setting on the edge of a river gorge. As a result all the rooms enjoy wonderful views over the valley and the river below. Perhaps the ultimate success is the infinity pool which is carved into the valley side. It would also be unfair not to mention the staff. As we said, choosing one highlight is not easy.
Surprises
The main surprise is trying to find the place – we were pleased to have a driver! Once there, you will be very aware that you are in a remote countryside location. Do expect the odd frog to croak, cockerel to rise early and gecko to find a way into your room. Do also note the villa is isolated but does have two cars for local journeys. The nearest ‘action’ is in Ubud,12 km away, which, via the winding but very picturesque country roads takes a good 25 minutes.
PROs
- Stunning views over the gorge
- Superb staff and service
- 3 distinct buildings for added privacy
- Lovely pool and adjacent plunge pool
- Close to Ubud
CONs
- Gym old fashioned
- Not easy to find
- Remote

Location
Perched on the side of a gorge above the River Sang Sang there is little around the villa itself. Over the far side of the valley but a good 15 minute drive away sits a small Balinese temple. Walk out the gates of the villa and there is nothing except a smattering of local houses. The tiny village of Selat is a few minutes walk away.

About Ubud
Ubud is Bali’s cultural hub, a royal village situated at the confluence of two rivers in the Balinese heartland. A haven for local and foreign artists since the 1930s, it is now a conglomeration of villages and the island’s centre for fine arts and cultural performances, attracting art collectors, connoisseurs, writers, mystics, and people who are actively involved in art, anthropology, music, dance, architecture, environmentalism and alternative healing.
Ubud is the seat of the Sukawati Royal Family. The palace is centrally located and open to the public, while in the surrounding villages you can watch the island’s most accomplished painters, stonemasons, woodcarvers, mask makers and silversmiths at work. Besides numerous shops, galleries, studios and a market, Ubud even has its own sacred monkey forest. Restaurants are plentiful, but nightlife is limited with the majority of places closing around midnight.
Ubud is the perfect area to use as a base when visiting Bali. The town claims most of the attributes that entice people to this exceptionally beautiful island – glistening rice terraces, traditional art and craft communities, ancient temples, palaces, and breathtaking river gorges. In fact, the Sayan Ridge is home to some of the best hotels and luxury residences in the world. Ubud’s central location makes it very easy to get to the mountains and all of the major tourist attractions. It also has a cooler, fresher and generally more pleasant climate than the southern coastal regions.
About Bali
Bali is Indonesia’s most popular tourist location and is considered one of Asia's premier tropical island destinations. Steeped in history and renowned for its artistic way of life, Bali is a peaceful contrast to some of the more frantic destinations Asia has to offer.
The inner peace and creative talents of the Balinese has attracted artists the world over fascinated by local dancers, silversmiths, wood carvers, potters and painters that seem to pervade throughout the island. The abundant verdant fields and surrounding sea have long supplied Bali with an easy surplus of food leaving time for life’s more artistic past times. As a result everything in Bali has a creative and religious element centred around the local Banjar (residents association) – little, adorned temples are everywhere, doors are covered in intricate carvings, huge kites ward off evil spirits and colourful roadside ceremonies bring traffic to a standstill.
Bali is a popular destination principally from Australia and Asia but also from all over Europe. The island welcomes thousands of visitors each year to a relaxing lifestyle, stunning beaches, world class surf, vibrant villages, and spectacular scenery all with an exquisite tropical climate. Located approximately two hours’ flying time from Singapore the island is serviced by an international airport at Denpasar with direct flights to and from many major cities in Asia, Europe and Australia and many more via Jakarta, Indonesia’s capital.
The island offers an impressive range of leisure and lifestyle amenities including world-class golf courses, wonderful seascapes for surfing, diving and snorkelling as well as luxurious spas, chic boutiques, tropical forests, towering volcanoes and international cuisine.
Rooms
Villa Bukit Naga is divided into three buildings: the main house, the visitors’ lodge and an annex suite – all looking over the river valley and centring on the main pool.
The imposing entrance leads into the hall of the main house, which opens to a dining and sitting area spilling out onto a huge pool terrace. Off the hall, is an entertainment room with computer, satellite TV and a huge DVD collection, a well-equipped kitchen with everything from an ice machine to a juice maker and two king bedrooms complete with marbled bathrooms, sun terraces, dressing areas and outside shower gardens. Upstairs is the grand master suite (which shares a bathroom with a study/guest bedroom with a four-poster bed ideal for children) whose highlight is the balcony overlooking the pool and valley.
The visitor's lodge consists of two king rooms (one situated up a wooden staircase), which share a lounge, a small gym and a beautiful secluded plunge pool. Each has a vast bathroom (shower room upstairs) and terraces with daybeds to enjoy the fabulous setting. The annex suite’s garden bathroom is a delight – the lush walled courtyard encloses a jacuzzi and ‘elephant’ shower. Inside are a further bath/shower, a king bedroom and a very private terrace.
To describe its rooms as generous would not really be doing Villa Bukit Naga justice – they are huge, with lofty ceilings and powerful fans and air conditioners. Rich in woods they overflow with interesting features, from the impactful art on the walls to some lovely furniture and collectibles from all over Asia. The attention to detail creates a very special experience.
Meals can be taken inside the main house or out on the terrace amongst the lush gardens. A poolside barbecue is a must. A path winding down the terraces through beautiful gardens bursting with a rich variety of plants leads to a gazebo or balé – the perfect place to enjoy the sunset over a cold beer or G&T after a strenuous game of pétanque.
