The Experience
Villa Iskandar is a place to forget all your woes and worries and just relax and recharge surrounded by the timeless charm of rural Bali. Your arrival at the villa will be announced by the resonating sound of a traditional Balinese gong. Close your eyes for one moment, open them again and you will find that you have been transported to a riverside paradise; a place of tall trees, bamboo groves, blue skies, the sight and sounds of running water, as well as huge butterflies and birds including Indonesia’s iridescent blue and turquoise kingfishers. The perfectly balanced Chinois-chic interiors of Iskandar blend light and space with a highly lavish and beautifully ornate combination of textured objets d’art, porcelain vases, scenic paintings, wall hangings, lacquered chests, and darkly wooded furniture set against Palimanan stone, white-painted walls and a latticed screen. This Chinese theme complements the clean lines of the villa’s contemporary architecture to lend a touch of old-world charm, which hints of harmony, mystery and intrigue.
All four bedrooms offer something special to the visitor and are a journey of high-level comfort and design. Antique Chinese furnishings meet super-comfortable beds, oriental rugs and hardwood floors alongside glorious Indian slate bathrooms and plenty of sliding doors, which open up to invite the outdoors inside. The rooms overlook or are focus around the recycled timber pool deck with plenty of sun loungers and a free-form infinity swimming pool that seems to disappear off into the river below.
Iskandar is perfect for groups of friends or families and is fully staffed by a highly trained team including private butlers, a chef and ample security. These polite young people anticipate guests’ every need and make their stay a most memorable one. A suggestion menu is available (provisions at cost plus 20%++ handling fee) and a car and driver is available for up to eight hours a day at an additional cost. Villa Iskandar can be rented in conjunction with five-bedroom Villa Atacaya next-door, the two jointly known as ‘Nyanyi Riverside Villas’, making an ideal destination choice for larger groups.

Highlights
The peace and quiet here is truly inspirational – perfect for holiday makers who really need to get away from it all. The staff are highly trained and know how to respond to any guest request with aplomb.
Surprises
While you may expect that the entire valley is yours and yours alone, there is another villa directly opposite. It is, however, hidden behind so much foliage that only parts of it are visible. The river travels a long way before passing by the villa and consequently can attract a bit of plastic waste which washes up on its banks. In dry season (April to November) the staff clean it regularly but in the wet season it’s a thankless task so just be prepared for a few discarded plastic bags.

Location
There is nothing immediately surrounding Villa Iskandar and its neighbour, Villa Atacaya, except a small Balinese village with a couple of local shops selling canned drinks, snacks and cigarettes, and a whole lot of greenery and agriculture. A stay at Villa Iskandar offers a beautiful opportunity to explore the lamented ‘lost’ Bali on foot (or with the inclusive car and driver). Three kilometres down the road in the direction of the setting sun is Nyanyi Beach, a black-sand beauty with a couple of other local shops selling more of the same.

About Seseh-Tanah Lot
A few kilometres north-west of Canggu, a towering banyan, sacred in many cultures, heralds the turning towards Seseh, a traditional beachside village approached via an avenue of coconut palms.
Seseh and its tiny neighbouring villages of Sogsogan and Cemagi still retain the customs and culture of old Bali. Here, you will see farmers in conical hats riding rusty old upright bicycles, as well as frequent, colourful processions leading to Seseh’s large beachside temple. You might just see a barong (a high-spirited, benevolent beast representing the power of good; danced by two men inside an ornate costume) dancing on the street. The good news, for folks who want to immerse themselves in the customs and culture of old Bali, is that the villagers encourage and welcome congenial visitors.
Although you can now find a few private rental villas in these three villages, they have seamlessly integrated without detracting from the simplicity and charm of the location. This is an ideal destination for those who want to get lost in the beauty of the countryside, and for those who want to engage with the local people and gain privileged insights into the Balinese Hindu lifestyle.
A little further up the coast is Tanah Lot, famous for its dramatic and venerated sea temple, which is perched on a craggy wave-lashed rock at the edge of the glistening black shoreline. It is probably the most photographed sight in Bali, especially in the late afternoon when its splendid profile is silhouetted against the setting sun. One of the top things to do in the Seseh-Tanah Lot area is to tee off at the 18-hole, 72-par, championship-standard Nirwana Bali Golf Club, frequently voted as the number one golf course in Asia. This, however, still remains a remote area with few facilities other than the souvenir stalls and simple eateries within the temple grounds, and three international restaurants within Pan Pacific Nirwana Bali Resort.
About Bali
Bali is Indonesia’s most popular tourist location and is considered one of Asia's premier tropical island destinations. Steeped in history and renowned for its artistic way of life, Bali is a peaceful contrast to some of the more frantic destinations Asia has to offer.
The inner peace and creative talents of the Balinese has attracted artists the world over fascinated by local dancers, silversmiths, wood carvers, potters and painters that seem to pervade throughout the island. The abundant verdant fields and surrounding sea have long supplied Bali with an easy surplus of food leaving time for life’s more artistic past times. The island welcomes thousands of visitors each year to a relaxing lifestyle, stunning beaches, world class surf, vibrant villages, and spectacular scenery all with an exquisite tropical climate. Located approximately two hours’ flying time from Singapore the island is serviced by an international airport at Denpasar with direct flights to and from many major cities in Asia, Europe and Australia and many more via Jakarta, Indonesia’s capital.
The island offers an impressive range of leisure and lifestyle amenities including world-class golf courses, wonderful seascapes for surfing, diving and snorkelling as well as luxurious spas, chic boutiques, tropical forests, towering volcanoes and international cuisine.
Rooms
The triple-tiered villa is entered via the living room on the top level, which is open on two sides with a balcony overlooking the swimming pool and river; this room is furnished with a sofa and equipped with a 48-inch satellite-channel TV/DVD player. A small pantry rests to one side, with a two-burner hob, and on the far side of this is a pond with a water feature and a pergola sheltering a table for four. With folding doors that can be opened to the pool deck or closed for air-conditioned comfort, the dining room is situated on the middle level and furnished with a table for ten offset by some antique Chinese sideboards. Adjacent is a fully-equipped, self-contained kitchen complete with an oven and five-burner hob. Outside, the recycled timber deck, furnished with sun loungers and an alfresco dining table for ten, wraps around two sides of a free-form swimming pool. Frangipani trees and palms provide shade and a firebowl creates a romantic ambiance at night.
All four bedrooms at Iskandar are furnished with king-size beds and equipped with air-conditioning, ceiling fans, satellite-channel TVs and DVD players. All are adorned with classic Chinese paintings. Each has a dressing area, or dressing room, and an ensuite bathroom with a walk-in rain shower; two have soaking tubs. The Master Bedroom, on the upper floor, has a balcony on two sides furnished with a table and a double lounger, offering gorgeous views over the river. Tucked away in a private corner of the balcony, under a pergola, is a river-rock soaking tub.
On the middle level, Bedroom One has an ensuite bathroom distinguished by a walk-in shower from which guests can step onto a balcony with a built-in seat. Bedroom Two is characterised by a rectangular bay window furnished with a desk, and a sumptuous ensuite bathroom fashioned in Indian slate and fitted with a soaking tub for two. Glass doors at the front of the bedroom open onto a balcony. Accessed by a spiral staircase, the Studio Bedroom is a private hideaway on the lowest level. Glass doors open onto a deck furnished with a double sunbed, table and chairs, with a serene, magical view of the river.
