Beach In Ten Villas

If being near the sea is a holiday ‘must have’, but walking into your bedroom with sand between your toes isn’t, these villas are less than 10 minutes drive from the beach - many within the soothing sound of the surf. (If you have to be right on the sand then try our Beachfront villas.)

Casa Brio

Casa Brio

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

Casa Brio was a delightful surprise — everything was so much bigger and better than we anticipated; the photos really don’t do it justice.

We were particularly impressed with manager Pak Yusa and his staff, who made sure we wanted for nothing during our stay from the moment they welcomed us with an ice-cold towel and fresh juice. A special shout out to Wayan the villa chef whose culinary skills ensured we never dined out (even though our old-time favourite, La Lucciola was only a five-minute stroll away). My taste buds still tingle at the thought of his delicately flavoured pomelo and chicken salad, and beautifully presented mahi mahi steaks.

This feels very much like a ‘grown up’ villa — we can easily imagine elegant dinner parties and special family celebrations, and think it’s a great villa for friends to share. Families with toddlers might be concerned about the open staircase and rooftop terrace (not to mention sticky fingers all over the handsome upholstered furniture). But the staff enjoy welcoming children, can supply a pool fence on request, and there’s a large shallow pool area for young ones to enjoy.

Villa Cendrawasih

Villa Cendrawasih

Indonesia » Bali » Greater Seminyak » Seminyak

This is a very classy contemporary-styled villa that truly represents luxurious modern Bali living, and fits perfectly into its fashionable neighbourhood. Villa Cendrawasih was only three months old at the time of our visit (August 2013) and we were very impressed by the high quality of its fixtures, fittings and furnishings. It’s a 900m walk from Jalan Petitenget’s shops and restaurants but only 400m from the beach. We liked the fact that the huge living and dining room could either be open to the pool and garden or closed off and air-conditioned, something that many villas don’t offer their guests: while visitors from colder lands might relish Bali’s balmy nights, those less enthused by an equatorial climate may not, so it’s nice to have the option.

We can recommend heading down to the beach (along the secret passageway) for sunset drinks – a Bali ritual for residents and visitors alike. Not only is it very relaxing but it’s also a great way to meet and have a chat with fellow holidaymakers.

Villa Chada

Villa Chada

Thailand » Phuket » Kamala

We have stayed in luxury accommodation plenty of times before, but we have to say that Villa Chada is amongst our absolute favourites. The landscaped gardens are fantastic, the lawns are neat, the lotus ponds swarm with colourful fish as gargoyles stare fiercely, and frangipani and bougainvillea trees give colour and scent. It really is a tropical garden oasis.

We spent most of our time in the infinity pool, it’s big enough to exercise and overlooks the ocean, and is surrounded by tall tropical trees. If we weren’t in the pool, we could be found lounging on the sunbeds, soaking up the rays. Early evenings were spent on the daybed gazing out at the ocean and not doing a lot apart from listening to nature’s sounds that one misses in hectic city life. We saw colourful longtail fishing boats pass by, and one day, to our delight, a monitor lizard hurrying for cover on the cliffs below.

We did have a small tussle over who would stay in the master suite as it has the best views and a great wraparound terrace, but it really didn’t matter as all the suites have fantastic views and with three bathtubs to choose from to bubble up, we were more than happy.

The villa staff is friendly and discreet. The food was amazing, Thai cuisine with suggestions from our very own private chef. They even ran out to the local store to buy us some wine on request. Apart from the TV, there isn’t much in the way of entertainment so bring a book or two and enjoy well-earned tranquility. There’s plenty to do outside the villa, we spent one afternoon at the luxury Andara Resort, enjoying the fine dining experience and watching children take part in cookery classes.

Dea Villas - Villa Amy

Dea Villas - Villa Amy

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

What the owners have done with the space at Villa Amy is incredible; so much has been fitted into the villa without overcrowding it. We don’t think we have ever before encountered such a large master bedroom, complete with huge hardwood beams stretching all the way to the lofty ceiling, polished floors, antiques, sitting areas and sliding glass doors leading out to a fish pond which appears to cascade into the swimming pool below. We felt a bit spoiled to be honest. An even greater feeling of space is conveyed by the clever use of wooden louvre shutters in the garden walls: lying beside the pool looking at views of the green swaying rice while cooling breezes drift through the shutters was pure bliss. Speaking of the pool, its low position means that when swimming or sun bathing you can’t help but look up and be mightily impressed by the architecture of the master bedroom. A beautiful place to simply chill!

Dea Villas - Villa Radha

Dea Villas - Villa Radha

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

There have been a few changes since we stayed at Villa Radha two and a half years ago, with the addition of two new villas to the enclave, a children’s playground, a gym and a spa. Staying at Villa Radha now means you have the choice of two spas on your doorstep. We decided, however, that we preferred the bygone era ambiance of the totally private wooden spa building within Villa Radha’s magical garden. Like the villa itself, the spa is another antique building so it is more in keeping with the overall character and charm. We noticed that with a total of five villas on the estate there is a now a little bit of hustle and bustle (and dare we say modernity) outside of Radha’s garden walls, but tucked away in our own private paradise – the gardens have grown and are even more beautiful than we remembered – we were able to completely relax and enjoy the wonderful service of the staff, and the great food. If you’re into sleek contemporary design the ethnic, rustic style of Villa Radha may not to be to your taste, but it is nevertheless immaculate and very comfortable, with all the trappings of the 21st century. There is no sitting room as such, but we enjoyed relaxing on the veranda, and were also very comfortable watching TV and movies in the air conditioned bedroom. As for the garden, well this is a landscaping triumph: forget any ideas of a modern Zen-like space, this garden will bewitch you with its tropical abundance of giant taro leaves, spiky pandanus, fan, parlour and travellers palms, bird’s nest ferns, heliconia, flowering frangipani, and rare fruit trees. It will make you wonder how it can be so full (almost to the point of being overgrown) and yet so meticulously maintained. At first we thought it was a little bit expensive for a one-bedroom villa, but when you consider the uniqueness of the property, the space, the facilities, the butler service, the pool, spa and gorgeous garden, you’ll probably agree that it’s extremely good value for money.

Dea Villas - Villa Sarasvati

Dea Villas - Villa Sarasvati

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Canggu

Two-and-a-bit years on from our original visit, Villa Sarasvati has matured and multiplied but lost none of its former beauty. Sarasvati is now part of an enclave of five villas (known as Dea Villas), so some of the neighbouring rice field land has been forfeited but there are still rice field views from the upper floor and all of the new buildings within the Dea Villa complex are now complete and available for holiday rentals, offering a whole host of renting options for large groups. The next-door Villa Radha (formerly known as the Gladak House) and its garden is now a separate entity (unless rented in conjunction with Sarasvati), but that’s okay because this is compensated by some new communal facilities, including a children’s playground, a gym and a dedicated spa. Overall, we concluded that Villa Sarasvati has been exceptionally well maintained and is still as eclectic as ever. With the addition of two more properties, the Dea Villas enclave is now busier and more commercial, so while the ambiance may have lost a little bit of its original laidback vibe, the team of staff has of course grown (they serve the whole enclave) and they have become even more slick and professional, yet we still found the service to be very personal.
