Moon Cove - Taipan

Moon Cove - Taipan

Thailand » Phuket » Cape Panwa

Delighting in Taipan villa's incredibly picturesque location on one of the few remaining coastal areas of Phuket that retains a traditional charm, we sunk happily into a languid life here and were very reluctant to leave. Though life at the villa is relaxed, the bay is bustling, and we were perfectly content spending our day watching the comings and goings of the long-tail fishing boats and yachts, while wondering about the progress of the treasures hidden inside the dangling oysters at the pearl farm in the centre of the bay. Venturing down to the beach, we saw only a sprinkling of local families strolling the sands -- and no rental sunbeds or tourists in sight. Those who relish the chance to delve into the local culture of a place will really love staying here. This being a new villa, the owners are open to suggestions, however, so be sure to give advance notice of any requirements you may have for children's equipment, bedding or other facilities. Aside from the daily breakfast service, this is a self-catering villa but we do recommend hiring the on-call chef at least once – his seafood dishes are superb! Meals may be arranged with the villa manager. Though we were happy to lazily float in the villa's pool all day, it is worth venturing out for at least one afternoon to drive the scenic roads around the cape, with plenty of places to stop along the way to take in the views or enjoy a cool drink in a shady hut.

Nirwana Golf Villas - Ocean and Golf

Nirwana Golf Villas - Ocean and Golf

Indonesia » Bali » Canggu area » Seseh-Tanah Lot

Even though you’re almost on the fairway of one of Asia’s best golf courses, you don’t have to be a golfer to enjoy a stay at this villa. Private homes with beachfront locations are not in abundance on Bali’s south-west coast, which makes Ocean and Golf a particularly good find as well as being good value. There are few better spots to enjoy the famous Bali sunsets than from this villa’s breezy balcony.

Ocean and Golf incorporates the best of both worlds; a quiet and private residence which, for an additional daily fee per person, also has access to leisure facilities at the neighbouring 5-star resort – you can even order room service (although you do have your own cook who prepare meals from a suggestion menu charging only the cost of ingredients plus 20% service charge). However for guests who want to venture out to experience the shopping, restaurants and nightlife in town, this villa is a little remote (Seminyak, the popular entertainment hub, lies 23km south). We enjoyed walking around the sprawling grounds and whizzing from the villa to the hotel lobby in our golf buggy. The view of Tanah Lot temple from Cendana, one of the award-winning restaurants at the Pan Pacific Nirwana Bali resort, is magnificent – especially at sunset.

Ocean and Golf is an ideal base for a group of golfers or a golfer who wants to bring the family along. It is sensible for seniors – there are two downstairs bedrooms if steps are difficult to navigate. Whilst there is a twin bedroom for children upstairs and plenty of TV’s to go around. As long as they don’t wander onto the fairway, it is a very safe environment for kids, and the complimentary facilities at the Pan Pacific Nirwana Bali  resort will keep children busy for weeks.

Olanda Beach House

Olanda Beach House

Sri Lanka » South Coast » Talpe

If you love lounging as much as we do then you’ll find Olanda Beach House a great place to just put your feet up, sit back and enjoy the sea views. By day, languish by the pool or in the garden ambalama; at dusk, grab your place on the built-in sofa beside the sea to watch the sun set over the palm-tree fringed headland as the staff whip up a cocktail (best to byo). The beach seems to get a few more visitors by late afternoon so, for even more privacy, you could head to the crow’s nest lounge (above the swimming pool) to watch the fishermen and swimmers from above. The villa is very child-friendly in that the lawn spreads out very visibly to the front, whilst the shallow end of the pool is a great place for toddlers to splash about. For diversion, a pool table is available as well as a TV with DVD player but there’s no dedicated TV Room. There are only a few books and board games, and while there’s no actual stereo you can play your iPod courtesy of a cable link to the DVD player.

Meals can be served indoors or out; just talk to the staff about your preferences. There are no menus at the villa so you need to be imaginative, however bear in mind that fish and seafood are plentiful. Discuss your meal requirements with the chef daily and the staff will then go out to shop for fresh produce (at market prices) and drinks. It’s best to furnish them with cash on arrival and then keep topping it up as appropriate (they will provide receipts).

Patong Hill Villa (5BR)

Patong Hill Villa (5BR)

Thailand » Phuket » Patong

In our several journeys up and down Phuket’s busy west coast, we’ve whizzed past the entrance to the narrow, lush lane of Patong Hill Estate many times and always wondered what it looked like inside. The estate is a property pioneer of sorts, being what we understand is the first luxury villa estate in Phuket, built in the early 1990s at the dawn of the island’s tourism boom. This five-bedroom Patong Hill Villa and its sister four-bedroom villa next door were built more recently (2004) at the top of the estate about eight years ago. Though it lacks the flashiness of some of the newer Phuket villas, it’s a lovely, welcoming place with an easy charm that we felt at home in immediately. Patong Hill delivers the full Phuket Island experience: impressive sea views, a jungle setting with whirring cicadas and birdsong, subtle touches of luxury and loads of comfort. Patong Hill Villa is a great choice for those who like to spice up their holiday with some nights out on the town. Though the villa offers a tranquil setting, we think it’s also an ideal launching point for a more action-packed holiday with the bright lights of Patong so close by. Patong is teeming with restaurants to explore, too, though you’d be hard-pressed to find a Thai meal as good as those prepared by the villa cook. Dining in-villa also offers better value since, typically for any tourist-oriented place, there can be some hair-raising prices at some of the better-known eateries in Patong. The service here is friendly and casual, and there’s a lack of formality that can be a welcome thing if you just want things taken care of with little fuss. If you’re seeking turn-down service and a line of crisply-dressed staff greeting you with garlands on arrival you’ll need to go elsewhere.

Villa Pemutih

Villa Pemutih

Indonesia » Bali » Jimbaran - Bukit » The Bukit

It is easy to become a little blasé when it is your job to stay in paradise holiday homes and report back on the findings, but walking into the gardens of Villa Pemutih and seeing that breathtaking view was a rapturous moment, and we knew that the next 24 hours was going to be blissful.

And so it was straight to the pool and the sunloungers on the cliff’s edge with a cold drink, a good book and some sunscreen. A cleverly placed tree provides the shade, while the birds, the cicadas and the ocean provide the music. The sweet Balinese staff bought us cold drinks as the afternoon wore on, and we watched the sunset from the cliff side balé. In the evening, a delicious Balinese feast was cooked for us by the talented kitchen team. We then retired to the super-comfy studio room to blast ourselves senseless with a couple of movies on the villa’s explosive home theatre system.

When the tide is low, do make your way down the cliff to the exposed reef for a bit of beachcombing among the rock pools. The water is calm and none too deep making it a fun, and safe, option for a paddle in the sea. Kids will also love the size of the villa grounds, where they can run around to their hearts’ content, and they’ll enjoy watching the birds in the aviaries. There are numerous species of trees in the garden, including flamboyant, frangipani, coral tree, custard apple, orange flowering saraca trees, acacia, cactus, mango, teak and yellow coconut.

Pointe Sud

Pointe Sud

Sri Lanka » South Coast » Mirissa

Pointe Sud is wholly romantic. If I was lucky enough to have my husband ask me to choose anywhere in the world to build my dream home, I would also choose this fabulous spot! Superlative views and heart-warming history aside, the swimming pool here is definitely my favourite in Sri Lanka. It’s one that you feel an urge to swim (proper lengths) or wallow in day and night and has a lovely curved edge that you can comfortably lean on and look out to sea. Its to-the-side situation also gives a degree of privacy without separation from the rest of the house. The property is secure and the level of privacy here is unlike anywhere else around, and you get all of this without losing the amazing sea views or accessibility to the beach. A flight of 70 or so steps down from the pool terrace (this is not the best house for the less mobile) takes you to a lawn beside the beach that offers an attractive daytime alternative to the upper levels of the house; you can’t really swim in the sea here but there are a couple of paddling spots where you can have a soak. I loved that the house had numerous nooks for quiet time and loads of spots for dining (making it great for extended groups) with the option of daytime BBQs beside the beach. The bathrooms are modern though small, and the cosy colonial-style bedrooms purely for sleeping; admiring the views and lounging are best done from the front veranda. The staff of six were gentle, welcoming and really very discreet. Nothing was too much trouble and the lovely cook (who’s also an experienced nanny) will shop and prepare meals for you, presenting you with bills (for both food and drink) daily. At the moment it’s seafood and Sri Lankan cuisine only, so if you like curries this is a great place to enjoy them. We can’t fault the maintenance of the house, the presentation of the food and the staff’s responsiveness to our requests; they were excellent. However service is leisurely and suitably reflective of a practised home rather than the mechanical efficiency of a hotel.

Satin Doll

Satin Doll

Sri Lanka » South Coast » Talpe

Satin Doll is a very well balanced villa; spotless, comfortable bedrooms, plenty of living space and a lovely, private front garden with sea views. The villa’s manager Thushara was also extremely eager to please and dealt with any issues that arose, quickly and discreetly. The contemporary artwork scattered around the villa, including the potentially authentic ‘Rage – The Flower Thrower’ Banksy by the dining area (the owner has no clue who painted it!) – also caught our eye, as did the beautifully soft palm-motif Indian bedspreads and cushions that were handpicked by the owners.

The villa has its own chef, and for lunch we ate gazpacho soup and tuna nicoise salad (our request; something light) and for dinner the staff prepared a house speciality, fish biryani, with brinjol pickle and salad. The suggestion menu was enticing, and included crispy pork belly, Thai curry, seafood options, and whole roast chicken. All food and drinks are charged at cost price (plus a 20% mark up), or you could opt to pay LKR 2,500 (around $20) per adult per meal (half price for kids). Breakfast is included in the rate.
